The Mount Hope stockwork molybdenum exposit, Eureka County, Nevada, occurs in a small igneous cauldron complex 32 to 38 mybp in age. The deposit is characterized by alteration zones and mineralized shells symmetrically distributed around multiple intrusives. For samples from the 25 000 meters of 1981-82 drilling, an appraisal of error in in-house sample preparation and in commercial assaying has been made. After splitting, drill core is crushed and reduced in volume (8:1 at 10-mesh, 8:1 at 70-mesh, 6:1 at 200-mesh) to supply 25 grams of 200-mesh pulp for replicate analyses. A 0.5 g portion of the pulp is used for dissolution and atomic absorption analyses. Factors which initially generated unacceptable data variances have been minimized by planning, repeat analyses, introduction of standards, and routine monitoring. Assuming that error between replicate assays defines a Gaussian distribution with its average ideally equal to zero, precision (from preparation including core splitting and analysis of 8400 pairs of molybdenum samples) is on the order of + 25%. The error distribution is not biased. Accuracy is approximately 4% lower than absolute as determined by replicate assays of commercially prepared samples.

The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations. The engineering geology of the Rio Tinto Borax Boron Mine creates challenges in providing practical slope design recommendations to mine planning engineers. Low strength sedimentary units interbedded with very low strength lakebed clays surround the orebody. Faulting has offset and juxtaposed these units into variably adverse orientations, while groundwater is compartmentalized both vertically and horizontally within fault blocks. A collective program of geologic data collection, geomechanical strength testing, geologic modeling, slope depressurization, confirmation of underground stope locations, and documentation of slope behavior provides vital information for design investigations and sensitivities. Analysis results lead to risk assessments and operational procedures that add value to the business by optimizing slope configurations and minimizing risk.

Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.

The Kaldo furnace is a type of top-blown, rotary reactor that is widely used for the production of precious metals. During the production of doré, a gas jet of compressed air is injected through a water-cooled lance to impinge upon the molten bath surface in the presence of molten metal and a slag phase. A common problem during operation is the difficulty in controlling the distance that the injection lance can penetrate through the reactor mouth without being splashed by the molten phases. Splashing may produce accretions on the lance surface as well as plugging of the nozzle at the lance tip. An additional problem may occur when the gas jet impinges upon the furnace wall and causes rapid wearing of the refractory linings. Because the conditions prevailing in the Kaldo furnace offers poor visibility to the human eye, its operation mostly relies on the empirical knowledge of plant operators and process engineers. A systematic study in a scale model of the Kaldo furnace under controlled laboratory conditions may be valuable to estimate the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance, and thus help improve the operation of an industrial reactor. From a fundamental perspective, the observation of the basic features of the flow patterns in the scale model may help elucidate the relevant phenomena governing the hydrodynamics in this type of system.

"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors with span >200m between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with minimal footprint. The Cable Bridge Conveyor is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long span between support points. It combines typical belt conveyor and the improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The Cable Bridge Conveyor’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows the versatility in application. INTRODUCTION Belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground based or elevated conveyors (1). The ground based conveyor has the lowest structural cost, where the conveyor is laying on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straight forward. Compared to the ground based conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has smaller footprint, and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss type structures, with typical span of 15m to 25m between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of triangular truss supported conveyor is around 30m to 40m, while the weight is about 10% less than conventional box truss with shorter span (2). Long span elevated structure based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100m~400m and beyond. The very wide distance between support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. The versatility from long span conveyors makes bulk material transportation over previously impossible terrains now a feasible option."

Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. The physiochemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity, and interlamellar surfaces having unusual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion, sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and/or magnesium (Mg), has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristics. Natural occurrences of Na mont¬morillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known worldwide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing, and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses exceeds that of any other mineral.

Antimony has been used extensively in industry and in everyday life since the 19th century, and antimony sulfides have been known since around 4,000 B.C. Antimony’s most significant applications are as a flame retardant in the manufacture of electronics and textiles, as a catalyst for plastic fabrication, and as paint pigment and fining agent in glassware, opacifier in ceramics and an alloying element in ammunition and battery manufacturing plants. It is also used in vehicle brakes and tires. Brake pads contain stibnite (Sb), the sulfide compound of antimony. In particular, stibnite is used in automobiles as a lubricant, vibration reducer and friction stability improver. Anthropogenic activities are the primary source of antimony in the atmosphere [1,2]. Annual global consumption of antimony has increased to more than 1.4 × 105 t, and China is the most significant producer [2].

"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

Backpropagation, learning vector quantization, counterpropagation, functional link, probabilistic, and. self -organizing map are among the most popular neural network classification paradigms. Each paradigm finds a unique set of weights that will map the input pixels into their respective output classes. The usefulness of each network depends on its overall accuracy, ease of use, speed and scaling. The fastest and most accurate networks in this study were the functional link and counterpropagation. These networks, however, do not scale well to large input vectors or large training sets. A better choice is the LVQ network which achieves high accuracy, is fast, requires a minimum number of input parameters and presents fewer scaling problems.

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

In this study, FLAC3D modeling was conducted for ground-structure stability assessment for a pilot tunnel passing under a large shaft excavated in the vicinity of existing structures at Karangahape Station for the City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand. The analysis involved generation of the geometries and construction sequences in Rhinoceros®, modeling the existing ground condition, calibration of the simulated in situ conditions with the observed behavior of the ground, and excavation of the shaft and the pilot tunnel. A comprehensive interpretation of the results was then performed accompanied by comparison of the predicted behavior with the observed response of the ground during construction.

The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.
