INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use. Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining.

This paper presents a computer program package for predicting surface movement and deformation caused by under-ground coal extractions. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.

In the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, groundwater control was of immediate concern. Water in?ow from the adjacent Hudson River through the compromised slurry wall ‘bathtub’ surrounding the site, ruptured water and sewer mains, and saturation from fire hoses all contributed to an already critical situation, further hampering the recovery and rehabilitation effort. An extensive pumping and deep well installation program was initiated, focused on reducing the hydrostatic loading to the severely damaged perimeter slurry wall.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

In open-pit mining, blasting pattern design is performed to achieve a desired degree of fragmentation for loading, hauling, and crushing operations. Inappropriate fragmentation of rock will result in numerous problems such as incurring extra costs for secondary blasting, production interruption, etc. Wetness of the blast holes is one of the most important factors, which can cause the inappropriate rock fragmentation. Lowering ambient temperature in the vicinity of the explosion, the presence of water in the hole adversely affects the quality of the explosive while dissipating part of the explosion energy, ending up with inappropriate fragmentation problems. In the present research, in order to study blast-induced fragmentation conditions in Baba-Ali Iron Ore Mine, three scenarios were considered: explosion of ammonium nitrate with fuel oil (ANFO) in dry hole, explosion of ANFO in wet hole, and explosion of the emulsion in wet hole. For this purpose LS-DYNA, a numerical simulation code was used. Results of the present research showed that, compared to the explosion of ANFO in wet hole, the explosion of the emulsion produced more uniform distribution of fragment size, while the explosion of ANFO in dry hole resulted in fewer large fragments.

INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. On June 14, 2023 Jay Dee Contractors’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) “Phoenix” holed through and completed mining the second drive of the I-75 Segment 3 Storage and Drainage Tunnel. Completion of the tunnel came only after overcoming several challenges, including a groundwater intrusion event which deposited thousands of cubic yards of wet ground material into the tunnel. This paper will discuss the events which delayed completion of the tunnel by over nine months, the risk management and construction approaches assumed by the Design-Build team during bid, several challenges faced by Design-Build teams when building stormwater resilience tunnels using traditional Department of Transportation standards, and recommendations for improving risk allocation and proposal documents for future similar Design-Build tunnel projects.

"Urban tunneling projects are usually extensively monitored. Most of the instruments used rely on benchmarks providing a sustainable datum throughout the life of the project. The monitoring program also is based on a predicted model of deformation induced by specific construction methods. Events can interfere with those assumptions and eventually alter the stability of these datum. In addition, the anticipated ground conditions and hence the theoretical deformation model often differ from reality. Satellite Radar Interferometry provides useful information to overcome the weakness of the hypothesis made before construction. It is also a powerful tool to ensure the continuity of the monitoring program throughout the life of the project, accurately describing the true effect of the project on the surrounding environment. This paper emphasizes the benefits and limitations of this technique for urban tunneling applications, illustrated by examples of major tunneling projects around the world. MONITORING URBAN TUNNEL PROJECTS Why Monitoring? Retrofitting existing tunnels or constructing new tunnels – including access and retrieval shafts, portals and cross passages – implies an alteration of the neighboring soil structure. Excavating, dewatering, grouting, loading tie backs, etc. artificially modifies the natural equilibrium of the pore-water pressure, of the water table level and of soil stability. In many cases, the effects are immediate: ground loss, deformation of utilities, settlements of buildings, and distortion of infrastructure are a few examples resulting from construction activity.Instrumentation and Monitoring Scope To control and mitigate the risks of damage associated with the above effects, tunnel projects usually include an instrumentation and monitoring program. Depending on the level of geotechnical, structural and environmental risk, the magnitude of this program varies. Projects with a low exposure to risk may restrain the program to conventional methods such as limited topographical surveys and intermittent manual readings of geotechnical instruments. On the other hand, iconic projects with high risk or with controversial history may implement complex and extensive instrumentation plans, involving highly technical solutions such as Automated Motorized Total Stations (AMTS – see opposite Picture 1), Multi-Point Borehole Extensometers (MPBX), In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a wide series of fully automated geotechnical, structural and environmental sensors. In this case, all the devices are usually connected to field data loggers collecting raw data around the clock at frequencies ranging from days to seconds, depending on the sensors."

Although most gold production from primary resources is achieved by cyanidation, many research activities have focused on alternative processes using noncyanide lixiviants. Such research has been prompted by environmental concerns and problems associated with the processing of refractory gold ores. Numerous research projects have been conducted to search for a noncyanide hydrometallurgical process for gold extraction. In this paper, a technical review of gold recovery from noncyanide solutions is presented, and new results are reported. Gold recovery techniques that are considered include activated carbon adsorption, cementation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and reduction-precipitation.

Sodium is a silver-colored metal that is so unstable that it reacts violently in the presence of water, and chlorine is a greenish-colored gas that is dangerous and lethal. Yet the combination of these two elements forms sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, which is a white-colored compound essential to life itself. Salt is perhaps the only mineral in the world that is used virtually by every human being in every country. Although its importance has diminished over time, salt has had a profound influence on history. Sources of salt have determined the location of cities, such as Salzburg, Austria, Salzgitter, Germany, Salt Lake City, UT, and Saltville, VA. Populations have migrated in search of salt, and wars have been fought to obtain or to protect it. Although there is no written record of when prehistoric man first discovered salt, he probably instantly appreciated its unique and distinctive taste and sought more of it. He noticed animals were attracted to salt springs and salt licks, where they satisfied their innate cravings. Man used this knowledge to hunt for food; where he found the salt, he would find the animals. Because prehistoric man was not aware of his physiologic need for salt, he automatically received his salt requirements from the meat of the animals he ate. A Mesopotamian tale tells of a wounded pig that ran into the ocean and drowned. After being recovered from the ocean, where it was saturated in the salt brine, the pork was found to taste better than unsalted meat. It was not until man graduated from a nomadic to an agricultural society when he introduced vegetables and cereals into his diet that he realized he needed additional supplements of salt. The Sumerians ate salted meat and used salt to preserve food about 3500 BC. In approximately 1000 BC, the Trojans learned to use salt for preserving fish. The maritime civilizations, such as that of the Phoenicians, engaged in an extensive salt trade throughout the Mediterranean. Many superstitions, customs, and traditions surround the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of civilization. Although some commodities have provided the basis of some ageless metaphors and cliches (i.e., heart of gold, strong as steel, etc.), none are more commonly used than those pertaining to salt. Being "the salt of the earth" referred to a person's worthiness, as referenced in Matthew 5:13 of the Bible. Someone "not worth his salt" reportedly was used in ancient Greece in bartering salt for slaves. When a laborer was worth his salt, he was paid a salary (sal is Latin for salt), a term still in use today that dates back to Roman times when part of a soldier's pay was salt rations. Fearing those around him, the Roman leader Pompey was known to add a grain of salt to his drinks as a supposed antidote to poison. Hence, "taking it with a grain of salt'' is to regard something with suspicion. The earliest known record of salt production was in China about 2000 BC when Emperor Yu decreed that salt had to be supplied to the court as a tribute. Because salt was a commodity that had universal demand, governments often intervened to control salt production and distribution to generate revenue for major national projects. State-run salt monopolies were common in history, such as in Rome about 506 BC. Revenue was also derived from taxes levied on salt sales. The word gabelle refers to the direct salt tax used in France. This tax was so despised that it was a major cause of the French Revolution. Although the tax was repealed in 1790, it was reinstated in 1805 to raise revenue for war. France continued to used the gabelle until 1945. Salt making was an important economic activity in many areas of the world. Archaeological evidence indicates that salt was quarried from hills near the Dead Sea before the Bronze Age. At Hallstatt in the eastern Alps of Austria, rock salt was mined as early as 1400 BC. Solar salt was being produced in the northern Yucatan peninsula by the Mayan civilization from about 50 BC to AD 300. Other than the prehistoric use of salt in the southwestern part of the United States by the Native Americans, the first production of salt by American colonists began in June 1614 on Smith's Island, VA, seven years after the founding of the Jamestown colony. The short-lived activity was in response to the high price of salt being charged by ship's captains who brought salt over as ballast from England. Although Nathaniel Loomis is credited with starting the first commercial inland salt production in the United States at Onondaga Lake in New York in 1790, salt had been made by individuals for private use years earlier. Indians had long known of the salt springs in the Kanawha Valley of Virginia (now known as West Virginia). In 1755, Mary Ingles, a white settler, was kidnapped by Indians and was forced to make salt from the saline springs. After her escape, she told other settlers how to make salt. At Saltville, VA, Arthur Campbell began making salt in 1782 by boiling brine obtained from salt springs. In 1799, William King sank a shaft about 3 m in diameter down about 61 m to the underlying Saltville salt deposits. The shaft flooded before he could extract any rock salt; however, King has the distinction of digging the shaft of the first salt mine in the United States. Fig. 1 shows the King site as it appears today in Saltville, VA. Production of brine from the shaft continued until 1892. Settlers moved into the Kanawha Valley in 1785, but it wasn't until 1806 that Elisha Brooks established the first commercial salt works in Kanawha.

Pastefill is being increasingly considered as a viable fill by underground mine operators. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) chose pastefill to fill their deep copper mine (>1200m deep) after considering various other types of fill in the feasibility studies. During the development of pastefill at Mount Isa (1996 - to date) the Mining research of MIM developed two cost effective, reliable and simple testing methods and used. With the help of these tests the behaviour of MIM pastefill was studied thoroughly and the most optimum mix design for pastefill was achieved. The MIM's pastefill plant, the largest in the world with a capacity of 450rph continuous pastefill production and unique in the process used, has been built (1998-1999) to produce pastefill to the specification developed through extensive testing program using the Flow Cone and Mini Slump cone Tests. As a consequence, it is now possible to select the optimum pastefill mix designs and predict their flow behaviour in bore holes or pipe lines using only these tests. MIM Blended Tailings Pastefill (BTPF) uses 3-3.55 Portland cement and the cost of pastefill is much lower than the total tailings pastefill, that could be produced from the same tailings.

Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.
