Most coals are susceptible to spontaneous heating which in turn creates problem to mining, storage and transportation of coal. It is impossible in actual practice o eliminate spontaneous heating but spontaneous combustion can effecively be controlled through a clear understanding of its mechanism and the factors affecting it. There are altogether six stages in the process of spontaneous combustion. This includes the water adsorption stage and six oxidation stages: chemi-sorption (upto 70°C), decomposition of peroxygens (70°C-150°C), oxy-coal formation (150°C-230°C), combustion initiation (230°C) and active combustion (> 230°C). Heat is produced in all these stages. On the other hand heat is also dissipated so that some equilibrium temperature is reached. If this temperature exceeds a certain critical value (generally about 70°C), coal oxidation may advance to spontaneous combustion. The major factors influencing spontaneous combustion of coal are: coal rank, maceral composition,, water, mineral matter, joints and fissures, seam depth and thickness, mine Layout, method of ventilation, etc. Susceptibility is high for low rank coals and generally decreases with increase in rank. Of the macerals, the exinites are generally most susceptible, the inertinites least and the vitrinites somewhere in between. Water plays a major role on the spontaneous heating of coal, assisting in someways and inhibiting in other. Unrecovered coal in the gob (generally in thick seams) is a major source of fire hazards and this is specially important in shallow mine. Proper design of mine ventilation system can substantially reduce the risk of mine fire. Panel layout and load transfer can affect the development of induced cracks which in turn influence spontaneous heating. Finally, the difference between the spontaneous heating of coal in a seam and that in storage or transportation is mainly due to the change in moistured content, air circulation through the coal and coal fragmentation. These aspects have been analyzed in this paper with a view o reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion.

"NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE, is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines, which has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. MFIRE is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence such as changes in ventilation parameters, external influences such as changes in temperature, and internal influences such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released over the years. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated FORTRAN programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic link library (DLL). However, the MFIRE 3.0 release made no attempt to change or improve the fire modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of fire source models of the t-squared fire and heat release rate curve data file, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke rollback phenomena. All the improvements discussed in this paper will be termed as MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future INTRODUCTION The MFIRE program, originally developed in the 1970s by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (now the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)) and Michigan Technological University, has been a mainstay in modeling of the mutual influences between a fire and the mine ventilation system during an underground mine fire. Several update versions have been released over the years, including MFIRE 1.27, 1.29, 1.30, 2.0/2.01, 2.10, and 2.20. The MFIRE program logically comprises four parts: (1) a conventional network calculation, where it performs the basic network balancing without considering heat or mass transfer; (2) a temperature calculation to establish the reference temperature distribution before a non-steady state (transient-state) simulation; (3) a transient-state simulation that follows changes in ventilation step-by-step to produce a continuous description of the temperature distribution, smoke, and contaminant spread through the ventilation system during a fire event; and (4) a quasi-equilibrium simulation to predict the state of the ventilation system after a relatively long period of time (defaulted as 5 hours in MFIRE) as the fire reaches a quasi-steady state. In summary, MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions including the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these (Chang et al., 1990)."

Bayer-process alumina hydrate becomes in turn the source of a host of special products in addition to the calcines that feed aluminum reduction cells. Though relatively smaller in tonnage, specialty aluminas serve important industrial markets in an exciting and growing variety. Production methods and applications are discussed for: (1) trihydrate as flame retardant in organic materials; (2) high-surface-area transition aluminas as desiccants and scavengers, catalysts and substrates; (3) calcines for industrial ceramics, refractories, and abrasives; and (4) tabular alumina for refractories, bed supports and other uses.

A surprisingly large mining-induced seismic event occurred in the LKAB Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden) on 18 May, 2020 at 03:11 (local time). The estimated moment magnitude was 4.2. The event caused extensive damage in a large section of the mine. The production in the area is not yet resumed, even by the beginning of 2022 (~20 months after the event). The Kiirunavaara Mine has one of the world’s largest underground seismic systems with approximately 253 geophones. The in-mine records of the event showed a very complex character with a several sub-events. The event was also well recorded by seismic stations out to over 9,000 km distance. Data from the underground and regional seismic systems were analysed to define and compare basic source parameters such as hypocenter location, seismic moment, as well as the seismic moment tensor. The data from the in-mine seismic system was used to study the development of the seismic process and to define elementary seismic sub-sources together with the official hypocenter location.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) panel cave mine is one of three active caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg Underground Mining Complex. The DMLZ mine is located at a depth of approximately 1,500-1800 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel cave mining operations. This depth results in both high in-situ and induced stress that acts on the hard and massive rock mass, triggering rockburst conditions. As a result of the bursting conditions, ground support and maintaining the support capacity are an essential part of operating the DMLZ mine in an efficient and safe manner.

Ore grindability data based on various techniques to measure comminution characteristics are used to evaluate the crushing and grinding efficiency in mineral processing operations. The importance of achieving improved comminution efficiency, in terms of energy consumption, has been emphasized by recent increases in the cost of electricity. From a theoretical standpoint, the objective of a grinding operation might be expressed as maximizing the production rate at a given grind size while minimizing the energy consumption per ton of material ground. To achieve this objective in an industrial operation presents a challenge especially in view of changes in the raw material which are normally encountered. Various procedures1-5 used to determine energy-size parameters and grindability measurements have been reported. The proposed relationships between particle size and energy consumed have much in common between many of the techniques for measuring grindability. Probably the most widely used parameter to measure ore grindability in recent years is the Bond work index6, Wi, which is defined as the kw-hr per ton required to break from infinite size to a product size of 80 percent passing 100 microns. If the breakage characteristics of a material remain constant over all size ranges, then the calculated work index would be expected to remain-constant since it expresses the resistance of material to breakage. However for most naturally occurring raw materials differences exist in the breakage characteristics depending on particle size, which can result in variations in the work index depending on grind size. Consequently work index values are generally obtained for some specified grind size which typifies the comminution operation being designed or evaluated.

As a factory-like method, sublevel caving consists of development activities, stockpiling and production activities that are carried out on different levels independently. Therefore, considering the operation from the development phase to the plant will lead to more reliable production scheduling. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming framework for the long-term production scheduling of sublevel caving that maximizes the net present value while satisfying development activities, mining, and processing capacities, continuous mining, the allowable number of active mining units, grade blending, and vertical and horizontal sequencing. The model is coded in Jupyter Notebook and is solved using the CPLEX solver.

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.

Pyrometasomatic zones are a type of replacement deposit, normally in a carbonate rock unit, which consists of a zoned, coarse-grained, generally iron-rich mixture of calcium and magnesium silicates. These zones or rock masses are also called ?skarn,? and ?tactite?. They are formed as a result of the interaction of a shallow intrusion of magma with a carbonate or calcareous host rock and are considered to be of hydrothermal origin. Three environments of pyrometasomatic deposits are depicted in Figure 1. Of course, the interaction takes place at high temperatures. Pyrometasomatic zones are categorized as calcic or magnesian, depending on whether the intrusive interacts with a limestone or a dolomite. Common pyrometasomatic zone minerals are garnet, epidote, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, actinolite, hedenbergite and diopside. Pyrometasomatic zones are of considerable economic importance because they contain ore deposits of tungsten, molybdenum, copper, lead, zinc and iron. According to Rose and Burt (1979), the chronological sequence in the formation of a ?typical? pyrometasomatic deposit is as follows: 1. Optimization of a three-dimensional (3D) underground stope layout is complex given the number of variables and constraints to consider, such as the stope size. Determination of the appropriate stope size in stope layout optimization problems is a complex process that must consider several factors including placement of infrastructure and development, production scheduling, and equipment selection. An inappropriate stope layout can result in unrealistic expectations for a production schedule, consequently negatively affecting the derived economic value. Therefore, this paper used a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to evaluate the effect of stope size on the stope layout economic value (SLEV) for a synthetic Platreef mineral deposit planned for extraction using sublevel open-stoping. The results showed that generally as the stope size increases, the SLEV decreases. This aligns with practical mining because larger stope sizes have a higher chance of incurring more dilution which reduces economic value, while smaller stope sizes enable more flexible extraction where unprofitable blocks can be left unmined as waste, thus increasing the derived SLEV.

Park City Municipal Corporation (PCMC), long before being recognized as an Olympic venue was known as one of the great American silver mining towns. During a century of active mining, the Park City mining district produced millions of ounces of silver in addition to a substantial amount of mine tailing waste. Since 1985 the City has been remediating these impacts with state and federal oversight. One particular challenging CERCLIS site, that was previously a historic mine tailings pond is known as Prospector Square Development (CERCLIS Listing Silver Creek Tailings UTD98051404). This site has been very challenging due to the metals that impact the shallow ground water that eventually drain into the Silver Creek Watershed. To address the water quality impairment the City and Missouri University of Science and Technology teamed up to investigate the feasibility of constructing a horizontal-flow wetland to treat this pollutant source. This effort began with the building of a pilot cell in June of 2004 and lead to the construction of a full scale horizontal-flow wetland in the fall of 2008. The design of the pilot and full scale biocell was based upon lab-scale research conducted by the Missouri University of Science and Technology. In October of 2008, the Prospector Drain effluent was introduced to the system and to date analytical results reveal that the biocell is treating the Prospector Drain outfall below the Silver Creek Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) endpoint goals for zinc .39 mg/L and cadmium .00075 mg/L. The water chemistry of the influent, that originates from the historic silver mine tailings pond, is impaired with zinc and cadmium and has low iron with a pH of roughly 6.5. The construction of this unit encountered many challenges related to constituent relations, regulatory scrutiny, constructability and start-up. Nonetheless, since implementation this unit is considered a success for improving water quality within the Silver Creek Watershed.

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. "The U.S. stone industry is in a transition from surface quarries to single and multiple level underground stone mines. The factors driving this transition include surface quarries; ? reaching their economic stripping ratio, ? encroaching on the mineral reserve boundary where the remaining reserves are below the active pit, ? dust, noise, and blast vibration concerns as suburban neighborhoods and development move into formerly rural areas. Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive, mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer in an underground stone mine is the stability of the roof or back, development and benched pillar stability, stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels, and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based upon the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite, or other discontinuities from which the production shot can easily ""peel"" away leaving a stable back stratum. Room width and the decision of whether to bolt the roof, the bolt length, bolt type, bolt diameter, and spacing of the support is controlled by the thickness, fracture spacing, jointing, and material properties of the back strata. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth as to avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the; ? vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple level interaction of overlying level(s), ? mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken while benching, ? presence of faults, folds, or joints passing through the pillar, and ? stone lithology recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, and bentonite beds create zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture sensitive strata, weak stone bands, or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. The ground control issues for underground stone mines are most clearly presented through a series of case histories. The case histories presented in this paper are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for underground stone mine ground control for roof, pillar, and floor design and stability analysis."

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 with establishing effluent limitations which must be achieved by point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. Section 301 (b) of the Act requires the achievement by not later than July 1, 1977, of effluent limitations for point sources, other than publicly owned treatment works, which are based on the application of the best practicable control technology currently available as defined by the Administrator pursuant to Section 304(b) of the Act. Section 301(b) also requires the achievement by not later than July 1, 1983, of effluent limitations for point sources, other than publicly owned treatment works which are based on the application of the best available technology economically achievable which will result in reasonable further progress toward the national goal of eliminating the discharge of all pollutants, as determined in accordance with regulations issued by the Administrator pursuant to Section 304(b) to the Act. Section 306 of the Act requires the achievement by new sources of a Federal standard of performance providing for the control of the discharge of pollutants which reflects the greatest degree of effluent reduction which the Administrator determines to be achievable through the application of the best available demonstrated control technology, processes, operating methods, or other alternatives, including, where practicable, a standard permitting no discharge of pollutants.

INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.

"Longwall shearers are widely employed in underground coal mines. The reliability of such machine has significant importance for successful mining operations. This paper aims at studying reliability of a longwall shearer using failure data recorded for a year. Data was pre-processed, sorted and selected for analysis. Selected data is then examined using statistical models. Distribution fitting of time-between-failure (TBF) and time-to-repair (TTR) are accomplished using three different models. Goodness-of-fit criteria is used to ascertain the best fitting model. Reliability in terms of mean-time-between-failure (MTBF), and mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) are calculated using the model which best represents the failure data. Heavy and expensive equipment’s are employed in development and operation of these projects. In order to ensure timely completion of set milestones, it is mandatory that equipment’s perform their required task productively. Delays are not unusual owing to breakdown of these equipment’s. Breakdown or failure experienced by any of the equipment pose heavy financial burden. Moreover, frequent times, companies have to employ and dedicate additional resources to make up for such delays. Delays in project is not only detrimental to company’s image in market, but it also interrupts customer commitments. Mines having history of not fulfilling their promise usually get lower commodity price. Penalties are also imposed on the companies defaulting its obligations. Especially, in today’s world where competition among the companies are growing, success means keeping up the commitments in a timely manner. Heavy machinery and equipment are instrumental in success of any project. These machinery and equipment’s have to reliable in a sense that they can perform the set task in given time period. Reliability of these equipment plays a pivotal role in success of any project. The reliability analysis of mining equipment has long history. Many researchers have applied different statistical models for analyzing the reliability of mining machines (Samanta, Sarkar [1]. Kumar and Klefsjö [2] demonstrated the use of the power law process model for reliability assessments of repairable mining machines. The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.
