Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

Pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems provide alternative methods for the safe and efficient mining of the thin high-grade coal seams found in the Southern Appalachians. Pneumatic systems eliminate most of the health and safety hazards associated with the operation of conventional mining and haulage equipment in small low-coal mines by removing powered mobile equipment from the mine. Ventilation is also improved by the coincidental removal of gas and respirable dust from the mine by the operation of the pneumatic loading and conveying system. Other significant advantages of pneumatic coal recovery systems are relative simplicity, operating flexibility, low capital cost, quiet operations, environmental benefits, and ease of automation. The design considerations and field evaluations of experimental prototype pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems, installed and operated in small thin-seam mines, are presented in this report. In addition, fundamental design criteria and recommendations for the installation and operation of a variety of pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems are proposed, which offer alternative coal recovery systems that alleviate the serious health and safety concerns of current small mine operations.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

"Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. From 2015 to 2021, five massive pillar collapses occurred at four underground stone mines in the eastern United States. These events resulted in powerful airblasts that damaged mine infrastructure and mobile equipment, seriously injured miners, and disrupted underground travelways. Each of these pillar collapses propagated through the overlying strata, causing a subsidence basin on the surface. Pillar collapses are particularly hazardous for miners because they can occur with little warning and can affect miners that are far from the pillar collapse area. The following case studies show that certain factors may increase the likelihood of a pillar collapse. INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." Kuroko deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide and sulphate deposit associated with Miocene submarine volcanics and has been considered to be a prototype of meta- morphosed Palaeozoic and Precambrian equivalents. Since the discovery of Uchinotai deposit of the Kosaka mine in 1959, Dowa and other mining companies have conducted intensive exploration work in the Hokuroku district of northeastern Japan. Dowa has been placing its first priority on the exploration of Kuroko deposits and made a series of remarkable successes in finding the Kuroko deposits, i.e. Uchinotai, 1959; Matsumine, 1963; Uwamiki, 1966; Fukazawa, 1969 and Ezuri, 1975. It is emphasized that our successes have resulted from the proper application of exploration technologies accumulated through our experiences. Firstly we defined the Kuroko horizon and favourable felsic volcanism based on the detailed structural and volczno-stratigraphic study of the Hokuroku district, and then delineated the promising areas by means of the quantitative evaluation of geophysical, geochemical and mineralogical parameters such as the magnetic susceptibility and contents of alkaline and alkaline earth metals in the foot wall dacites and clay mineral assemblages of both hanging and foot wall pyroclastics and dacites. Practical application of these techniques is essential to our routine Kuroko exploration.

The Cyprus Thompson Creek Mine is located at 2,286m (7500 feet) elevation in the Central Idaho mountains, 61.16 kilometers (38 miles) southwest of Challis, Idaho off State Highway 75. The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit lies near the eastern border of the late Cretaceous Idaho Batholith within a complexly deformed sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a composite biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite stock considered to be genetically related to the Idaho Batholith intrusive event. The ore is being mined by open pit methods and delivered to the concentrator stockpile with an overland conveyor belt system. The concentrator is designed as a 22,680 metric tons (25,000 ton) per day plant at an average head grade of 0.1% Molybdenum.

"INTRODUCTION During the last decades, many underground facilities for the storage of hydrocarbons have been excavated worldwide and the technology is fully mature. Similarly to other underground structures, the initial basic design has to be adapted along with the work progress, in order to cope with the actual site conditions and in particular the geology, hydrogeology and associated rockmass quality. In addition, Client’s or underground Contractor’s constraints (such as resources availability, schedule or cost impact) may vary from design to construction and require last minute adjustments. Engineers are required to introduce flexibility and anticipation of unexpected situations (similar to the above-mentioned) while conceiving large underground facilities. Although most of the cases require only minor adaptations, crucial parts of the facility have sometimes to be considerably modified and reviewed. This article will present four cases evidencing how the design of one of these essential structures - the concrete plug – has been adjusted during site implementation without impairing the initial performances. Hydrodynamic containment The product containment of the unlined caverns discussed here is ensured by the principle of hydrodynamic containment. A permanent water flow is naturally or artificially maintained with an orientation toward the storage cavern and then, neither product-tight membrane nor lining are required. The hydraulic gradient (and the associated water flow lines), being directed from the surrounding mass toward the cavern, prevent from outward migration of the product. If the hydraulic gradient is not sufficient or if the water table is evidencing instability, water can be artificially injected into the rockmass through purpose-built boreholes, drilled from dedicated galleries. This water injection system, called the water curtain, is generally located several tens of meters above the level of the cavern. This principle is illustrated here after."

"Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

INTRODUCTION The components of the radiological hazard in uranium mines are: 1. exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation With usual ventilation rates, the dosimetry relative to the first component only requires to know each miner&apos;s exposure to a potential energy of short-lived radon daughters, (EXP[a]). Presently in France, (EXP [a]) is determined monthly from radon concentration measurements. This is an indirect method based on ambient monitoring. After technical improvements achieved during the last years it is now possible to measure (EXP [a] directly with an individual portable monitor developed by the CEA. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare monitoring results obtained by these methods. DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL MONTHLY EXPOSURES TO[ a] POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SHORT-LIVED RADON DAUGHTERS [(EXP a) amb, by ambient monitoring] In this case, it is necessary to know individual monthly exposures to radon, (EXP Rn). As mentioned by Pradel, J.,et al., 1976, (EXP Rn) is estimated for each worker from informations both on radon concentrations (CRn) measured as described by Pradel, J., 1962 and times (t) elapsed in the various workplaces. (EXP Rn) is obtained by summing up the elementary radon exposures CRn x t relative to all the workplaces where the miner was successively engaged during the month. (EXP Rn) values are then corrected by an average equilibrium factor of 0.17 deduced from many measurements and taken as representative for all the French mines. Finally: [ ] (EXP [a])ind are obtained directly with an individual portable instrument described by Chapuis, A.M., et al., 1972. Samples of the air breathed by the miners are pumped continuously and radioactive aerosols containing the short-lived radon daughters are trapped on a filter. The principle of the measurement lies on track-etch detection of the a particles emitted by the deposited material. The technical aspects have been described by Duport, P., et al., 1980a, Mouden, A., et al., 1980 and Chapuis, A.M., 1980. As mentioned by Duport, P., et al., 1980, fiability is good. Indications on measurement reproducibility are given by Pradel, J., et al., 1977. PRESENTATION OF THE STUDY The underground miner population of a French mine was followed during a period of 8 months (October 1978 - May 1979). Monthly exposure values for each miner determined either by ambient or individual monitoring, (EXP [a])amb or (EXP[ a])ind, had been previously collected by Le Gac, J., 1980, who had also defined miner categories according to the characteristics of the work performed. Four groups are considered here, the "whole mine" and three categories as described in table 1. Data on the individual monthly exposures,(EXP [a])ind and (EXP [a])amb, were taken again to analyze the individual cumulative exposures instead of the "month by month" values. The influence of the mean habits of each individual on its surveillance results is thus taken into account. Each miner has a cumulative exposure as an individual of the "whole mine" and as an individual of each category in which he has worked. The results obtained by ambient or individual monitoring were analyzed (characteristics and adjustements of the distributions) and then compared (description of the discrepancies observed). Obviously, such a study is possible only if all the exposures are cumulated on a same duration. As miners have not worked during the same number of months in the course of the data collecting period, one must considerer the individual average monthly exposures, [(EXP a)]amb and[ (EXP a)]ind, instead of the individual cumulative exposures, which is typically the same thing. To be sure that the exposure values of a given group (A, B, C or D) are representative, only those miners really present for at least 3 months in this group were taken into account. Finally, each individual of the "whole mine" and of the various work categories has a pair of average monthly exposure values : [(EXP a)amb] determined by ambient monitoring and[ (EXP a)ind] deduced from the track-etch recording of the individual portable monitor. In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous-grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rock/ball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diameter x 0.305 m (1.0 ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video-presentaiton (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rock size distribution and flow rates.

Coal is a major source of energy in the world today and will, undoubtedly, continue to be so for the next few centuries. Naturally, a great number of studies has been made of its physical and chemical properties. Unfortunately, the work on technical properties which influence the mining of coal and the consequent yield of inflammable gases and respirable dust particles has not progressed at a comparable pace. Coal is a brittle material. Irrespective of the mechanism of breaking coal, some dust is always produced. In mining parlance dust is defined as solid particle, smaller than 100 microns (micron = 10-6 meter), in size Coal dust, when raised into a cloud, creates two well known hazards in mines, namely, the coal dust explosion and Coal Workers&apos; Pneumoconiosis (CMP). The latter is, perhaps, the greatest environmental hazard in U.S. coal mines today. In this context it is not only natural but also necessary to investigate the proneness of a coal seam to respirable dust production. It has been established that the amount of dust produced is a function of two groups of variables (1), (2), viz. (1) Material dependent variables, e.g., moisture content, compressive strength, hardness, etc. (ii) Breaking mechanism dependent variables, e.g., type of machine, depth of cut, etc.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980&apos;s would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of &apos;yellow cake&apos; - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. &apos;yellow cake&apos; production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 &apos;Yellow cake&apos;, so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. The detection of hazardous geological anomalies through remote sensing techniques is the subject of current research efforts sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this review, hazardous geological anomalies are discussed with respect to the "view" presented along with potential operational concepts for each technique. The design and development of a borehole radar is described with emphasis on the potential range and resolution capability of the system under realistic underground conditions. Results of field tests at two coal mines and at a hard rock future subway location are presented.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

As a result of feasibility studies made in 1975 a 3-0 seismic reflection survey was shot over part of the Veendam salt pillow during 1978-1979. The Zechstein salt pillow, located in the northeast of the Netherlands near the town of veendam, occurs at a depth of 1400 m and contains three carnallite rich horizons over an interval of 300 m below top salt. MgCl2 brines are produced from these layers as feedstock for a magnesia plant, which starts up in 1981. Prior to the acquisition of the seismic data four wells had been drilled. The thickness of the carnallitite layers encountered in these wells varied between 50 and 125 meters. In view of these variations it was necessary to obtain a reliable isopach of the different layers. The 3-0 seismic survey covered an area of ± 4x4 km with a sampling interval of 20 m in all directions. The data was recorded it an area array using a 120 channel instrument. Final presentation of the data was in the form of 3-0 migrated acoustic impedance cross sections. The quality and resolution of the seismic data allowed reliable structural and isopach mans to be made. It was shown that the carnallitite layers are continuous over the area surveyed, whilst local thickening is "fault" related. Having this information brine production locations could be choosen in the thicker parts, allowing maximisation of production potential whilst avoiding faults and fulfilling mining regulations. A subsequent benefit of this approach is the possibility of using the seismic data to predict ore grade. Using the available wells as calibration points the acoustic impedance response of the seismic at the well was matched to the ore grade found. From these points a synthetic section was made with varying ore grades. Pre¬liminary results are encouraging and the liability of this predictive tool will be evaluated in the light of future drilling.
