The Wellman-Lord SO2 Recovery Process is operating commercially at one location in this country and at two locations in Japan. Tail gases from a sulfuric acid plant, from an oil fired steam generator and from a sulfur recovery unit are the respective applications. 1) At the Olin Corporation's Paulsboro, New Jersey, stack gas from a spent acid regenerative sulfuric acid plant-45000 SCFM - is treated in the W-L unit to reduce sulfur dioxide concentrations from 4500 ppm to less than 500 ppm. 2) At the Japan Synthetic Rubber plant in Chiba Prefecture, stack gas from an oil-fired steam generating plant - 120,000 SUM - is reduced from 2100 ppm S02 to less than 200 ppm. 3) At the Toa Nenryo Kogyo refinery in Kanagawa Prefecture, tail gas from a sulfur recovery (Claus) unit - 41,000 SUM - with, an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 13000 ppm is reduced to less than 200 ppm. The three installations are operating successfully and are capable of reducing S02 emissions to levels significantly below the concentration guaranteed. With the one exception of a higher than guaranteed chemical make up requirement at Paulsboro, utility and chemical requirements will be less than design.

"In recent years the fact that mining tailings cause serious environmental problems resulted in increasing number of studies about their disposal, storage and usability in various areas. Therefore the new studies about using the tailings for some purposes such as using in shotcrete or producing concrete have been increasing recently. The study is focused on applicability of tailings for producing shotcrete. Under this scope it is considered that mining tailings can bring many advantages in case of that they are used instead of sand, silt or fine aggregate in shotcrete applications. Most important advantages can be listed as decreasing shotcrete cost, decreasing amount if mining tailings to be disposed and the contribution to be provided on sustainable production of sources. The main objective of this study is the investigation of using mine tailing instead of fine aggregate in shotcrete. In this study, 10 shotcrete designs in different proportions were formed, and properties of the mixtures were identified. Then, the experimental results were statistically analyzed, the effects of the amount of the tailing material used on shotcrete properties were presented, and empirical approaches that can be used for the estimation of these properties were developed. INTRODUCTION The disposal of high amount mine tailing on the surface is caused a lot of problems in terms of environmental impact. Unfortunately, it is known that classic disposal techniques such as tailing dam cannot provide a solution these problems. The tailing dams which are usually used in the disposal of mining tailings bring along many problems in terms of cost, environment, and human health. So mine tailings are used in different production such as shotcrete. This technique is becoming increasingly common during recent years. The usability of mine tailings in brick and concrete production instead of cement and fine aggregate has been studied by many studies [1-4]. This situation has been promising for the usability of tailings in shotcrete which is commonly used for ground support especially in tunnels. Shotcrete (sprayed concrete) is applied mainly for construction of tunnels, shafts, renovation works and strengthening of slopes. Main advantage of shotcrete is fast development of strength, which quickly ensures stability of strengthened structure [5]. Shotcrete can be defined as spraying the grout consisting of water, aggregate, cement and optional additive mixture on the desired surface with a compressed air. According to the definition of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), it is the spraying of sprayed grout or concrete on a surface at high speed with air pressure [6]. In recent years, the use of shotcrete for the support of underground excavations is decreased in the mining industry. The design of shotcrete support for underground excavations is a very imprecise process. Strength and pumpability properties of shotcrete are very significant for determining suitable shotcrete design. Flow characteristics of the shotcrete must be determined for pumpability and fluidity of the material."

Even with conservative mine planning, rib instability can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation. sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected that culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

Multiple seam mining is predominant throughout the central Pennsylvania Appalachian coal fields. Wide ranges in individual seam thickness, coal quality, and overburden characteristics are common throughout the region. On typical mining permits, ranging from 404 x 103 to 2023 x 103 m2 (100 to 500 acres), often as many as eight seams are concurrently mined, with each interburden requiring unique economic and environmental consideration in the mine plan. Specifically, this paper presents several planning tools and operational guidelines developed in response to current regulations for the special handling of potentially acid-forming materials as they are related to development and operation of multiple seam mines.

"Underground continuous mining machines pose a difficult safety challenge since their operators generally work in close proximity to these machines in very restricted spaces. Intelligent software for use with magnetic proximity detection systems has been shown to accurately locate workers around mining machinery in real time. Calibrating these systems requires the manipulation of a lot of data to determine the calibration constants. Researchers have developed software to analyze, convert, and visualize data acquired during this calibration process to more accurately model magnetic fields and their interaction with the environment. This paper details the background, development, and operation of the resulting application software focusing on the utility of the graphical user interface to visualize the magnetic field calibration data. The refined data developed by this process can then be utilized by the proximity detection system to more accurately identify the location of miners working in an underground mining environment. INTRODUCTION Roughly half of the electricity consumed in the United States is produced with coal, and roughly one-third of all US coal production comes from underground mines [1]. Over the last century underground mining health and safety has seen a continuous and dramatic improvement. However, machine-related injuries and fatalities continue to be a major safety concern [2]. Every year, hundreds of miners are severely injured while operating underground mining equipment, and 39 miners have been killed in striking/pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines (CMMs) since 1984. CMMs, such as the one shown in Figure 1, are large mobile machines that are used to mechanically cut coal in an underground mine. These machines weigh approximately 40 to 50 tons, have hydraulically articulated appendages, and are capable of moving at speeds up to six feet per second [3]. Modern CMMs are remote-controlled, yet the operator and other miners are often in close proximity to the machine. Recent research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reveals that the locations workers take relative to the CMM are usually influenced by visibility requirements and safety concerns [4]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) estimates that at least 28 fatalities involving CMMs since October of 1984 may have been prevented with proximity detection technology [5]. MSHA further estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [6]."

Although fracture intersections and "domes" seem at a number of places to be the basic structural combination for the occurrence of a mining district, of the porphyry-copper type particularly, this situation is, of course, not always to be expected. For instance, the group of mines comprising Superior, Ray, Miami, Globe, Christmas appeared from the beginning of these structural studies as typical exceptions, and there are others. One had to expect additional parameters to allow for any mineral concentration to occur. One of these apparent parameters is here considered. From the result of stratigraphic studies related to ancient formations in Southeast Arizona, the Martin limestone (Devonian in age) was retained as having a possible relationship with the structure-economic studies in progress, as evidenced for instance by the mineralized O'Carroll bed located at the base of the Martin. This limestone formation has been rather extensively investigated in the past and there are many known sample localities. For this work, the isopach map was drawn by computer to insure more objectivity and, in addition to the available data points, a number of dummy points with a zero value were added around the assumed form-

An evaluation of the use of air cooling power as an index of the thermal environment is discussed. A body temperature prediction -. model based on body temperature tests, a concept linked to a maximum safe body temperature and the predicted fourth hour body temperature which depends on the rate of heat accumulation (heat storage) within the body has been developed and tested. This has led to the conceptual development of a personal response heat stress meter calibrated to the physiology of the personnel within the workplace. The proposed heat stress meter will be able to measure workplace environmental parameters such as air temperature, humidity and air velocity and the user can either select or manually enter other heat stress parameters such as work rate, clothing type and subject's personal response to heat. With a built-in computer program, the meter will calculate the ACP of the workplace, the fourth hour body core temperature expected and the maximum safe working time allowed for a pre- defined limiting body temperature. A brief description of the work required for developing the meter is included. The potential benefits of such instrument to the mining industry are also evaluated.

Four samples of galena, each prepared differently, dry ground chalcopvrite and real gar have shown various quantities of liberated sulfur corresponding up to nine equivalent monolavers on their surfaces as determined by the solvent extraction/UV analysis of sulfur using ethanol. The pretreatment of a dry ground galena sample with acidified ammonium chloride or neutral, saturated sodium chloride solutions rendered the mineral readily floatable. The collectorless floatabilities of galena pretreated with the former solution and of drv ground chalcopvrite have been evaluated in reference to the natural floatability of sulfur using the critical surface tension of floatability approach with aqueous methanol solutions. It is shown that the amount of sulfur- on these samples can be correlated with their flotation rate, which was found to he first order within the critical surface tension range. The larger the concentration of surface sulfur, the faster the sulfide mineral floats, thus, the greater its flotation rate constant.

The discovery of the adsorptive power of charcoal from solutions is generally accredited to Lowitz (1785), who observed that several dissolved organic substances were precipitated on charcoal. Graham was the first to demonstrate that inorganic substances were also adsorbed on charcoal. In 1830, he reported that iodine dissolved in KI solution was adsorbed on charcoal. "The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnelboring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses. Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

"Coagulants rich in ferric sulfate can be obtained from pyrite-containing coal tailings using a biohydrometallurgical process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between quantity of pyrite and rate of oxidation, with regard to the consequent production of ferric sulfate for potential use as a coagulant for water and wastewater treatment. Leaching experiments were carried out on the laboratory scale on four coal tailings with different concentrations of pyrite. Characterization of the coal tailings was conducted for the following parameters: total sulfur, pyritic sulfur, sulfate sulfur, organic sulfur, and elemental analysis of CHN (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen). The samples were also subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis to assess their mineral compositions. The leaching experiments were accomplished using a laboratory column constructed as a packed bed reactor with a sprinkling system in a closed circuit. After four weeks of leaching, the liquor was filtered and evaporated to an iron concentration of about 12 percent w/w, which is typical of the ferric sulfate coagulants commercialized in Brazil. IntroductionCoagulants used for the treatment of water and wastewater are predominantly inorganic salts of ferric iron and aluminum. Aluminum salts, including aluminum sulfate and aluminum chloride, and prehydrolyzed metal-ion reagents, such as polyaluminum sulfate (PAS) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC), are the coagulants most widely used for water treatment (Bratby, 1980; Tchobanoglous et al., 2003; Buzin et al., 2014).However, the presence of residual amounts of aluminum in drinking water has been controversially implicated in neurological diseases (Association of California Water Agencies, 2000; Becaria et al., 2006; Campbell, Hamai and Bondy, 2001; Rondeau et al., 2000; Walton, 2006). A possible alternative is to use iron-based coagulants, such as ferric chloride, ferric sulfate or polyferric sulfate, instead of the aluminum salts (Jiang, Graham and Harward, 1996; Jiang and Graham, 1998). Iron-based coagulants are commonly produced by the acid dissolution of iron scraps or iron ore (Tchobanoglous et al., 2003).Recent studies have shown that it is possible to produce ferric sulfate coagulants from the pyrite present in coal tailings through a biohydrometallurgical process (Colling et al., 2011). The main advantage of this process is that it does not require acid addition, which can be favorable in terms of production costs. Acidophilic bacteria, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, can increase the rate of pyrite oxidation and dissolution by several times (Kontopoulos, 1998; Brett and Jillian, 2003; Johnson and Hallberg 2003). They can be highly significant in the bioprocessing of coal tailings for the production of ferric coagulants, as their action favors the acidification of the medium and iron leach (Colling et al., 2011)"

The economic importance of salt domes has been recognized throughout the world primarily because of oil and gas accumulations on their flanks and, to a lesser degree, for the value of their salt and potash. Recently they have become of value as hosts for cavities used to store hydrocarbons. In the near future we believe that their main value will be as a source of geothermal energy. Although tremendous effort has been expended on the understanding of the geology and physical characteristics of the strata intruded by salt domes, relatively little energy has been exerted in the comprehension of the salt dome itself. Salt domes have long been recognized as a geological heat anomaly. With respect to other sedimentary rocks, salt is a good conductor of heat. Expressing values in 10-3 cgs units, sedimentary rocks vary from 1.0 to 8.0; metamorphic rocks from 5.2 to 8.4 and igneous rocks from 3.1 to 9.8. Rock salt in its pure form has a thermal conductivity of 17. (Gussow, 1970). Thus a salt dome (Fig. Ml) can be expected to act as a conduit bringing heat vertically from deep within the Earth's crust. This was, in part, substantiated when in 1958 a horizontal core hole was drilled from within the Avery Island Mine at the 500 foot level. The horizontal hole was started where the ambient temperature of the salt was 74° F. and drilled toward the center of the dome. At the end of this 2,000 foot hole the temperature was 90° F. thus depicting a horizontal temperature gradient of 7° F./1,000 feet. Because this core hole penetrated a shear zone connate water that appeared as a "cold spot" on the temperature gradient, the foregoing data can only be regarded as indicative.

Impacted waters, often complex, are created in mining which at some point in the mine life cycle will need to be attended. The simplest and most cost effective method of handling impacted water is to reuse it as makeup water for operations. At the end of mine life, operational reuse will not be an option and the impacted water will require treatment to achieve alternative reuse goals. Conventional mine impacted water treatment is successful in removing unwanted constituents but create brine and sludge that may require special handling or additional treatment, resulting in additional liabilities and costs. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has taken an approach to water treatment that focuses on transformation not concentration. The Water Treatment Test Facility located at Sierrita Mine has three test plants that are piloting the mine impacted water transformation process. Two plants have been designed for the removal of calcium and sulfate with products of gypsum and sulfur. The third plant removes metals from process water and transforms them into marketable metal sulfides. The transformation, rather than concentration, of mine impacted water solutes greatly reduce long term risks.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."
