The average global recovery rates for processing scheelite ores by physical methods are normally in the range 50 to 70%, and it is problematic to attain a minimum grade of 60% WO3 in the concentrates without penalizing further this yield. Direct hydrometallurgical processing of low-grade concentrates or medium- to high-grade ores may become an interesting global economic alternative as it allows increasing the recovery rate, avoiding major penalizations due to the grade of the concentrate and increasing the added value of the final product. Leaching of scheelite by sodium carbonate presents several advantages such as its selectivity regarding the dissolution of troubling metals like iron and aluminium, allowing for a simple and flexible process diagram. However, it has the disadvantage that it is performed at high temperature and pressure with a high consumption of reagents. The feasibility of leaching is appraised by the extraction yield and selectivity, but also by the operating cost. Considering these aspects, a relevant objective of the research was to transform alkaline pressure leaching into a feasible processing alternative directly applicable to both medium- and high-grade ores and simultaneously to low- and high-grade concentrates produced by physical methods. The research used ore samples and low-grade concentrates from a typical skarn orebody as well as high-grade concentrates from a chalcopyrite-scheelite orebody. Different operating conditions were tested. Temperature, pressure and reagent concentration showed to be fundamental, but not exclusive, in determining the leaching behaviour. The operating conditions are milder than the ones generally proposed in the literature or currently in use in industry, but with higher carbonate consumptions. The research was oriented towards potential industrial implementation allowing for the application of optimization methods and straight scale-up to pilot-plan design and project.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

The Lenox Avenue Reconstruction Project involved the excavation and replacement of 750 m (2,500 ft) of deteriorated subway invert concrete, 5 to 7 m (15 to20 ft) below water table in very permeable ground. The Replacement work was done over an 8 month period, while maintaining track service through this subway section. The project was dewatered with a single 125 l/s (2,000 gpm) wellpoint system,750 m (2,500 ft) in length, which was installed from inside the active tunnel structure and configured to coexist in the subway tunnel with operating trains as well as the construction activities. A thin diaphragm jet grout wall was utilized on one end of the site to cut off the flow of water across a difficult geological interface that was situated immediately below the tunnel invert. The thin diaphragm jet grout wall permitted the large 116th Street Station area to be dewatered completely with well points from outside of the excavation.

During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 2005 at a record $758 million (21 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 2005 include salts (halite, potash, and magnesium salts), Portland cement, sand and gravel, carbonates (lime, limestone, and dolomite), phosphate, crushed stone, clays, lightweight aggregate (expanded shale and perlite), gypsum, silica, sulfur and sulfuric acid, and building stone. Commodities produced in smaller amounts include diatomite, pumice, gemstones, ornamental stone, fluorspar, and mineral and fossil specimens. Utah is in a period of rapid growth in industrial rock and mineral production; however, some commodities have grown faster than others. The robust western economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, Portland cement raw materials, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants

Although mining is currently one of the smallest academic units on the Colorado School of Mines(CSM) campus, it is alive and well, with nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students. For many years, Mines has had undergraduate and graduate programs in hard-rock mining. The school has recently transferred its physical mineral processing activities to the Mining Department. The program has also expanded to include tunneling, underground construction and industrial minerals. There are current discussions about increased research activities on cement and other construction materials. The Mining Department also teaches its share of what is called the “distributed core” courses with curricular requirements common to related programs, as well as mining safety and health, in conjunction with our continuing education department.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.

The 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT3) has been completed. This article summarizes aspects of liner design and ad-dresses the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented. The Mill Creek Phase 3 tunnel (MCT-3) is expected to be completed this year. It is one of the largest tunneling projects undertaken by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to date. The tunnel horizon is situated within the Devonian Chagrin Shale rock formation at an average depth of 85 m (280 ft). The tunnel was excavated using a two-pass method. A full face, fully shielded, Robbins 7.2-m- (23.8-ft-) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate approximately 4,500 m (15,000 ft) of tunnel and facilitate installation of initial supports (first pass). The final lining (second pass) consists of 305-mm- (12-in.-) thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete and integral low flow channel. Seven shafts were constructed on the project. The excavation of the tunnel commenced at Shaft 14 and proceeded down grade to Shaft 9, the terminus shaft. Because of the presence of overbreak in the tunnel crown, measures were required to support the form and counteract the effects of buoyancy during concrete placement.

For the first half of the 21st century, the United States will rely on the same mix of fuels it has for the past 50 years. Petroleum for the United States will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in stress on the gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging “piggy-back” trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Introduction What drives the price of gold? Supply and demand, of course. But in ways far different from the forces that drive the prices of other major metals, such as steel, aluminum, and copper. Gold, in fact, is one of the few commodities where both buyers and sellers are happy when the price goes up. Current production, production costs, and variations in production have little influence on its price. Gold inventories are so tremendous that current production has small impact on the amounts available to the market at any time. Worldwide gold inventory and production The world's inventories seem to be between 78 and 98 kt (2.5 and 3 billion oz). Since biblical times, the gold miners of the world have produced about 98 kt (3 billion oz), mostly in this century. Only small amounts have been thrown away and most of it - more than 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) - remain in bullion, coins, or jewelry. About 40% is held by central banks and other governmental authorities, 30% by private individuals as bullion or coins, and about 30% as jewelry. Except for some of the jewelry and the few industrial applications, this inventory is constantly available in marketable form at a price. By comparison, gold production is indeed small. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that the world produced 1.5 kt (50 million oz) of gold in 1986. Consequently, production increased world inventories by only 2%. Variations in production have a negligible or very short-term effect on the supply and, consequently, on the markets for gold. Although South Africa mines about 40% to 50% of the world's annual production, continuing labor strife there does not seem to have ruffled gold prices. Determining gold's price Gold prices, however, do determine cutoff grades in the mines and, thus, do influence production. Nonetheless, changes in production have little impact on the inventory supply. Consequently, it has small influence on the price of gold on the market. With a fairly stable supply, price changes are driven by changes in its demand. Unlike other metals, very little of the demand for gold comes from industry. Dental, electronic, and other industrial uses for gold consume less than 46.6 t/a (1.5 million oz per year). It would be safe to assume that such uses are less than 124 t/a (4 million oz per year) for the entire world. Variations in the 124 t (4 million oz), compared to a supply of 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) of supply can have only a negligible effect. Production net of industrial uses adds perhaps 1% annually to world inventories. This could, in time, affect markets. The increase, however, is mostly absorbed by population growth - more people wanting to own gold - and by gold being put in more attractive forms, such as coins. Fire in a coal mine can be disastrous on many levels. In most cases, when a fire is detected, mining operations cease and all personnel are evacuated. Underground coal-mine fires are difficult to extinguish, can burn for a long time, and often result in an extended period of lost production. In a worst-case scenario, the mine is permanently sealed and abandoned, resulting in lost jobs, lost natural resources, and possible devastation of the local economy. In some cases, seals placed within the mine to isolate the fire could eliminate the need for sealing the entire mine and the subsequent extended delay in returning the mine to full operation. Previous attempts to place remote seals to extinguish mine fires in active mines have been largely unsuccessful. The West Elk mine experienced an underground fire in early 2000. The fire could not be accessed and extinguished from the active mine workings. A method of constructing seals remotely by drilling boreholes into the affected area was needed to help isolate and extinguish the fire. This paper describes the process by which remote seals were constructed that successfully isolated the fire and provided a means of extinguishing the fire by flooding the area with water. The period of lost production in the West Elk mine was considerably shorter than is typical in similar situations.
