The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. Anglo American Platinum's Khomanani 2 shaft changed over from down-dip mining to breast mining in 2004. The changeover was made to ensure that production targets were met, as it was said that predevelopment for down-dip mining was not fast enough to sustain the required ore reserves; nevertheless, production performance did not increase as expected. In this study a trade-off was performed between down-dip mining and breast mining on the Merensky Reef at Khomanani 2 in order to find the most suitable method for mining the Merensky Reef. Data was gathered by means of a literature survey, underground observations, and interviews with personnel as well as data from various departments on the mine. The two mining methods were studied and then evaluated in terms of the following criteria: safety, mining rate, cost and other factors which were identified as the main drivers of the mine. A scaling system was used to rate the performance of the two mining methods. Analysis of the results shows that down-dip mining and breast mining have the same safety performance ratings. Breast mining has a better mining rate performance than down-dip mining. Breast mining was found to be costly in comparison with down-dip mining, which has a good cost performance rating. The overall ratings of the two mining methods are very similar, with down-dip mining achieving a rating of 76 and breast mining 75.5 out of an optimum 102. Khomanani 2 currently practices breast mining, and with such a slight difference in performance rating between the two methods, it will not be worth changing over to down-dip mining as production is likely to be adversely affected during the changeover. Down-dip mining does, however, have potential for improvement in its performance rating. Further studies focusing on the improvement of the mining rate performance for down-dip mining are needed to see if this potential can be realized. If significant improvement can be made in the performance rating for down-dip mining, a changeover to down-dip mining can be reconsidered.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

The computer assisted generation of geological models to represent the geometry of, and grade distribution within, orebodies is a rapidly growing area of the geological profession. Such models are increasingly used as a necessary starting point in determining the mineability of mineral deposits in terms of practical mine design and economic considerations. The transition from traditional techniques such as field or underground mapping and the manual calculation of grade and tonnage estimates, as well as related activities such as the interpolation of cross-sections, the use of stereographic projections, core logging and hand contouring, to computerized applications, is by no means complete. In fact, many geological professionals deliberately avoid the use of computer simulations based on the perception that the resulting models are simplistic and that their construction is not founded on sound geological principles. The purpose of this paper is to assess current thinking on this topic by considering; (a) an overview of advances in the drafting of geological maps, (b) the theoretical basis for multi-dimensional geological modelling, (c) the case for combining traditional and modern techniques, and (d) the benefits to the mining value chain.

Rock engineering plays a crucial role in contributing to sustainable development in South African mining. A framework for this has been created through legislation and structures to encourage the mining industry to have a long and prosperous future. However, rock engineering input is an essential element to achieving success. The most accessible deposits have been mined in South Africa and although large reserves still remain, many of these are difficult to access and will require excellent rock engineering knowledge and skill in the future. This is borne out by the fact that more than 50 % of fatal accidents are related to rock engineering issues. Many of these may be addressed with rock engineering solutions which are not beyond current rock engineering technology. A reduction in fatalities and injuries contributes to a sustainable mining industry.

Fluctuating SO2 gas streams represent a difficult task for designers of SO2 removal systems (with respect to designing the plant), but in spite of the designers great efforts to solve the problems, the operation of such plants requires much care and attention. A fluctuating gas flow usually results from metallurgical smelting processes. Both gas composition and gas flow rate may vary. The first part of this paper outlines some existing technical solutions and presents the Pros and Cons of the different solutions. These solutions outline are: - Sulphuric acid plants operated with a preheater permanent in operation - Sulphuric acid plants with concentration increase of SO2 gas either using regenerative SO2 removal or cryogenic partial condensation of the SO2 - Sulphuric acid plants with additional burning of sulfur to increase SO2 content - Single-stage sulphuric acid plants followed by a tail gas system (which is) designed for periods of low SO2 input In the second part, this paper describes some existing technical solutions for removal of SO2 at low concentrations (i. e. less than 0.1 - 2 %-by volume), which could be used as tail gas treatment system for acid plants. While selecting an appropriate solution, special attention should be given to operating costs, which usually to a large extend depends on the type of absorption agent and the costs for disposal of the sulfur compound produced.

The report states accident rates for gassy/dusty coal mines represented as an ergatic system "man – machine - environment" with further analysis by the method of conditional probabilities. A coal mine has been analyzed with allowance for the attending personnel, equipment and environment as a sequence of events and states. Probabilities of operational states have been determined and prediction of mine behavior has been made on the basis of investigation findings for equipment and the personnel states, and analysis of the environment (i.e. mine and mining conditions). Utilization of expert estimation methods has been considered for determining major operational parameters of gassy/dusty mines. The importance of standardized values of permissible occupational risks (permissible probability of accident, PA) is demonstrated. It is also stated that a procedure is essential to determine these values, involving regular check-ups of the integral safety criterion at all mines and further development of customized recommendations for individual mines on efficient improvement of accident situations. Methodology to determine the assessment criteria has been developed and scientifically substantiated for permissible accident rates in hazardous industries.

This paper highlights several management practices from the oil and gas industry to support the proposition that financial performance in the finite, non-renewable resource business relates more to upstream rather than downstream activities. Based on the analysis of nine oil and gas companies, this study supports a previous study involving fourteen mining companies that showed reserves growth is one of the main levers of value creation in mining. Interestingly, this study also finds that the oil and gas industry has been historically more profitable than mining. The reason, it is argued, is that oil and gas companies count on management practices that focus primarily on the upstream segments of the business, compared to the traditional downstream focus of mining. This paper delves into these ideas to conclude that what mining may need to improve its competitive advantage is a new organizational framework. Another conclusion is that the upstream management focus is vital not only for strategy formulation in the resource business, but also for policy formulation in economies based on the export of finite, non-renewable resources.

COALTECH 2020 initiated a research project to provide the coal mining industry with a modelling tool to determine the expected types of subsidence, risks and the investment required in post-closure funds to cater for subsidence associated with bord and pillar mines. A detailed literature review was conducted to determine the most important parameters in calculating the cost associated with surface subsidence. A subsidence prediction model was developed to determine the likelihood of different types of subsidence. The study made use of current knowledge of failure mechanisms and its aim is to assist the industry and government in arriving at the most suitable arrangements when authorities require financial instruments to assure compliance with environmental regulations.

Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

In surface mining operations, truck haulage is the largest item in the operating costs, constituting 50 to 60% of the total. In order to reduce this cost, it is necessary to allocate and dispatch the trucks efficiently. This paper describes shovel and truck operation models and optimization approaches for the allocation and dispatching of trucks under various operating conditions. Closed queuing network theory is employed for the allocation of trucks and linear programming for the purpose of truck dispatching to shovels. A case study was applied for the Orhaneli Open Pit Coal Mine in Turkey. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures (mine throughput, mean number of trucks, mean waiting time, etc.) for planning purposes when the truck fleet is composed of identical trucks. A computational study is presented to show how choosing the optimum number of trucks and optimum dispatching policy affect the cost of moving material in a truck-shovel system. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

Professor H.R. Philips was born in South Wales. After graduating with a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Bristol, he joined the National Coal Board's management training programme. Mr B. Moore was born in Coventry, England. He matriculated at Bablake School and then atended Birmingham University, obtaining a B.Sc. Mining Engineering degree in 1953. Professor J .S.J. (J annie) van Deventer matriculated at Swelendam High School. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, and obtained the degrees of Hons. B. Ing. in 1978 and Ph.D. (Ing.) in 1985. Professor M.D. Brayshaw received most of his education in England but obtained his Ph.D. (Eng.) at the University of Natal. The decisive action taken by mine managements in recent years has been the main factor in bringing about the present downward trend in mine fires. A better understanding of the fundamental factors that govern the ignition and spread of fires. obtained as a result of investigations into mine fires, has provided useful guidance to production personnel. Similar investigations into fire-fighting techniques have assisted the Rescue Training Service and mines to institute more effective fire-fighting techniques. Some of the more important findings of recent investigations in these areas are outlined.

With the decline in fine diamond production from the Argyle mine in Australia, there is a greater emphasis on efficiently treating the finer size fractions through a DMS circuit. Although it is generally well understood that smaller diameter cyclones are more appropriate for this application, practical results do not necessarily meet this expectation. In this paper the operational performance of particular sized cyclones throughout the group was compared. Based on the results there is evidence that under certain practical operating conditions, small cyclones are not necessarily best for fine size particle treatment, particularly given the production pressures faced by all mines. However, there seems to be considerable merit in using larger sized cyclones, which tend to exhibit less performance variability, irrespective of operation conditions.
