Laboratory bias is a universal problem in all branches of analytical science. It results from differences in methods, techniques, equipment, and calibrations between laboratories. Notwithstanding that it is a property that can be measured by the use of standards or by inter-laboratory testing, laboratory bias remains a material issue for the mining industry. There is extensive literature and clear guidelines on measurement from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and its worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies) and from the science of metrology. ISO guides cover the manufacture and use of standards. An accessible source of literature covering laboratory quality control comes from the public health sector, particularly pathology. There is little doubt in financial reporting rules about the meaning of materiality. Public reporting guidelines are clear that material matters need to be disclosed for investors. Unfortunately there is currently no clear guidance what to do about biased assay results in mineral industry public reporting guidelines. This paper reviews the requirements for the manufacture and use of reference materials, public reporting requirements in the mining industry, and presents proposals to improve management and reporting of laboratory biases. "For effective steel refining in the ladle (secondary steelmaking) the amount of steelmaking slag that is transferred from primary steelmaking must be limited, because the steelmaking slag contains iron oxide, manganese oxide, and phosphorus oxide. Adverse effects of slag carry-over include increased consumption of deoxidizers, phosphorus pick-up by the steel, and increased ladle refractory wear. Infrared imaging at longer wavelengths is an effective non-contact method to detect slag in the tapping stream. Various devices are used to shut off the tapping stream rapidly. These include slag darts, pneumatic slag stoppers, and slide gates for steelmaking converters, and eccentric bottom tapping for electric arc furnaces. IntroductionOxygen converters and electric arc furnaces are used for primary steelmaking. For both process types, the product (liquid crude steel) has a similar composition: largely liquid iron, with around 800–1000 parts per million (ppm, by mass) dissolved oxygen and low but significant concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The steel is tapped into a ladle, which serves as the refining vessel to adjust the final steel composition and temperature before casting.Some steelmaking slag is inevitably tapped with the liquid steel. The mass of steelmaking slag tapped with the steel is termed ‘slag carry-over’. Controlling and limiting slag carry-over from steelmaking is a primary requirement for clean steel production (Fandrich, Lüngen, and Wuppermann, 2008). Steel cleanliness refers to limiting the concentrations of dissolved impurities (such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulphur) and of nonmetallic inclusions (oxides, sulphides, and nitrides) in liquid steel and in the final solid steel product. Of these, the strongest effect of slag carry-over is on the content of dissolved phosphorus in the liquid steel"

In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

Coal mining in Ostrava-Karvina coalfield is being accompanied by rockbursts. 82 rockbursts occurred within the period between 1990 and 2002. Natural and technological factors from these rockbursts were collected and analysed. They confirmed that rockbursts are complex geomechanical events and that the relations between co-acting technological and natural factors are very complicated. Der Abbau in dem Ostrava-Karvina Steinkohlenrevier wurde von Anfang an durch Gebirgsschläge begleitet. 82 Gebirgsschläge in dem Zeitabshnitt von 1990 bis 2002 erfolgten. Die Angaben über natürliche und technische Faktoren der Gebirgsschläge wurden gesammelt und analysiert. Es wurde bestätigt, dass die Gebirgsschläge komplexe geomechanische Phänomene sind und dass die Beziehungen zwischen den zusammenwirkenden Faktoren sehr kompliziert sind. L´abattage d´houille dans le Bassin houiller d´Ostrava-Karvina est accompagnée par les coups de terrains. 82 coups de terrains s´étaient produit dans la période entre 1990-2002. Les données sur les facteurs naturels et techniques ont été ramassées et analysées. Les résultats ont corroboré que les coups de terrains sont des phénomènes géoméchaniques complexes. Les relations entre les facteurs techniques et naturels coopérants sont très compliqués.

The northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastal dune cordon, South Africa, extends from north of Durban into Mozambique. The Quaternary dune cordon, which can be up to 2 km wide, comprises a series of stacked, unconsolidated dunes that in places attain a height of over 100 m. Mining of the dunes produces much of the world’s supply of ilmenite, rutile and zircon. This paper documents the age of zircon grains separated from dune units, identifies likely source rocks and presents an evolutionary history for the dune cordon. Between 30 and 60 detrital zircon grains from three distinct units from the northern KZN coastal dunes were analysed for U/Pb isotopic ages using the SHRIMP II at the Australian National University. The samples represent units from the base (ca. 250 ka; luminescence age1),middle (ca. 190 ka2) and upper (ca. 20 ka2) portions of the coastal dune cordon. Zircon grain ages identify three source populations: (1) a 1 000 to 1 200 Ma group correlated to the Natal Metamorphic Province, (2) a 500 to 650 Ma group representing a Pan-African belt, which may correlate to the Mozambique Belt and (3) a ca. 650 to 800 Ma group of unknown provenance. Surprisingly, the presently exposed basement, comprising the Kaapvaal Craton and Archaean volcano-sedimentary sequences, has not supplied a significant amount of zircon grains (< 5%).This suggests that unroofing of basement rocks in the region has only occurred during the last 20ka. In addition, the absence of zircon grains younger than 500 Ma indicates that the bulk of zirconis not reworked from the Karoo Supergroup cover succession, but may be sourced by reworking of the Natal Group sandstones.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) degree Thermophilic bioleaching, conducted at temperatures in excess of 65°C, provides considerable benefit over mesophilic bioleaching, particularly through extending the extent of leaching of base metal minerals such as chalcopyrite. Thermophilic bioleaching is facilitated through a group of micro-organisms known as the Archae, well adapted to extreme environment. In order to maximize the space time utilization of the stirred tank reactor in the thermophilic bioleaching process, it is desirable to maximize the loading of the finely divided mineral phase present while not adversely affecting the microbial performance. In this paper, the effect of the loading of the solid particulate phase on the bioleaching performance of Sulfolobus metallicus was studied in a stirred tank reactor. Emphasis was placed on the effect of the concentration of the finely divided solid phase (35 ? 75 µm). A model system comprised of 3% (w/v) pyrite in the presence of varying quantities of quartzite in the range 0 to 24% (w/v) was used to obtain the different solids concentrations. The bioleaching experiments revealed similar bioleaching performance in the presence of 3 to 18% (w/v) total solids. Above 18% (w/v) total solids (15% quartzite loading), bioleaching was impaired progressively with increasing solids concentration. At the highest solids loading studied of 27% (w/v), bioleaching was still observed. In terms of mass transfer, oxygen transfer potential was not significantly influenced in the bioleaching process over the range of solids investigated.

Abstract For the feasibility study of an underground waste disposal the characterization of the coupled behaviour of the host rock is required: Because of the very low permeability of these formations few experimental data are generally available. In this framework the uses of the sensitivity studies could orient the experimental efforts by highlighting the key parameters of the formation. This paper gives a first approach of the sensitivity studies performed with probabilistic methods in the geomechanical field. A one dimensional model which characterizes the thermohydromechanical response of an argillaceous rock to the excavation of a waste canister site and its setting up, is considered. Zusammenfassun Die Machbarkeitsstudie eines tiefliegenden Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle beinhaltet die Untersuchung des gekoppelten Verhaltens des im Lagerbereich anstehenden Gesteins. Aufgrund der sehr geringen Wasserdurchlässigkeit dieser Formationen liegen häufig nur wenige experimentelle Angaben vor. Die Verwendung von Sensibilitätsstudien kann in diesem Zusammenhang als Hilfsmittel zur Entscheidungsfindung dienen. Dabei sollen die maßgeblichen Eigenschaften der Formation festgestellt werden, anhand derer der Umfang der experimentellen Erkundung festgelegt werden kann. Dieser Artikel stellt einen ersten Ansatz zur Durchführung von Sensibilitätsstudien mittels einer mechanisch-probablistischen Kopplung im Bereich der Geomechanik sowie die Vorteile gegenüber Parameterstudien vor. Zur Abbildung des thermohydromechanischen Stoffverhaltens von tonigem Fels während der Schachterstellung und der Einlagerung der Abfälle wird ein eindimensionales Model verwendet. Résumé L&apos;étude de faisabilité d&apos;un centre de stockage de déchets radioactifs en profondeur passe par la caractérisation du comportement couplé de la roche hôte. Du fait de la très faible perméabilité de ces formations, souvent peu de données expérimentales sont disponibles. Dans ce cadre l&apos;utilisation d&apos;études de sensibilité permettrait d&apos;orienter les efforts expérimentaux en faisant ressortir les caractéristiques primordiales de la formation. Cet article présente une première approche de la réalisation d&apos;études de sensibilités à l&apos;aide de couplages mécano-fiabilistes dans le domaine de la géomécanique. Un model unidimensionnel caractérisant la réponse thermohydromécanique d&apos;une roche argileuse au creusement d&apos;un puit de stockage et à la mise en place de conteneurs de déchets est considéré.

In this research, a model quarry with an annual production capacity of 1 000 000 tonnes has been studied for both pit and hillside quarry cases with constant overall slope angle and variable bench slope angle, considering road grades of 8 per cent and 10 per cent. First, technical requirements have been determined and then the effect of production parameters, such as hole diameter, type of quarrying (pit or hillside) and road grade, on the cost has been investigated to determine bench height. Based on the results, it has been concluded that hole diameter has to be kept large in both pit and hillside quarrying to reduce drilling unit costs. In addition, in order to take advantage of gravity and reduce transportation cost, it has been suggested that bench height and road grade have to be kept high and low respectively in the case of hillside quarrying (downhill transportation) while, in the case of pit quarrying (uphill transportation), bench height and road grade have to be kept low and high respectively, in order to transport the blasted material to a lower height and distance, to save energy, thus decreasing the transport cost. This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

The use of electrolyte additives to smoothen cathode deposits during copper deposition is practised worldwide. These additives absorb on the cathode surface and take part in the electrochemical crystallization process. However, these additives also affect the quality of the cathodes when they are inadequately controlled. Electrolyte additives used by Palabora are glue, thiourea, Avitone and chloride. Their effects were determined on cathode quality, the size of the current density region that gives the desired compact morphology, and current efficiency. This was done in a small-scale cell. Small cells have different hydrodynamics from industrial-scale cells, which makes it difficult to simulate the operation of industrial cells in a laboratory. The approach used here was to use a rotating cylinder cathode to attain controlled hydrodynamics. The rotation speed was chosen to give a diffusion layer thickness that is similar to that of an industrial-scale cell. It was shown that even fairly small changes in the additive levels can significantly affect the cathode morphology, and the current density range over which this morphology can be obtained. Mining engineers frequently encounter complex design problems for which the critical components of the design are difficult to quantify or compare. Teams of people typically work on these designs and human perceptions and judgments play a strong role. To assist with this process, the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as a decisionmaking tool is described in this paper. Although the technique is used in many other disciplines, it is currently not widely used in mining engineering in South Africa. To use the AHP process, the problem should be treated as a hierarchy that defines the goal, the alternatives to reach it, and the criteria for evaluation of these alternatives. Pair wise comparisons are conducted on the criteria of the hierarchy to establish priorities. The value of the technique is that it is simple to test for consistency amongst the pair wise comparisons to ensure that the answer obtained is better than that provided by a random selection. To illustrate the technique, the use of a backfill support system in a platinum mining project was investigated. Ten design parameters, which will be impacted by the use of backfill, were identified and weighted according to their relative importance. The result of the AHP evaluation was that the use of a backfill support system should be preferred to a conventional support system at the mine.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

The Orange-Vaal River system is known to be the primary secondary source for alluvial diamond deposits in the northern Cape and along the west coast of Namaqualand. The higher order sources for diamonds contained within this system are still not defined entirely to satisfaction, but certainly include kimberlite pipes exposed in the catchment regions of these rivers. The focus of alluvial diamond mining along the Orange-Vaal system recently changed from the traditional areas in the upper catchment regions?the Barkly West, Christiana, Bloemhof, Wolmaranstad, Schweizer-Reineke region, and the lower regions near the mouth of the Orange River at Baken, Alexander Bay and Oranjemund, to the area between Douglas and Prieska?the so-called mid-Orange region (Figure 1).

The SMR geomechanics classification system (adaptation of RMR for slopes) is reviewed with data from 87 actual slopes in Valencia. In a research project, SMR has been applied by a GIS system, as a method to forecast stability problems in future road construction. As a result of this work a methodology for GIS application has been developed. On revient sur la classification geomechanique SMR ( une adaptation du RMR pour talus et pentes) avec les dates de 87 talus existant autour de Valencia. Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche SMR a été appliquée, avec un système GIS, comme méthode de prévision de stabilité problèmes dans la construction de futures routes. Une méthodologie pour l’application du GIS a été développe. Das Geomechanische Einteilungssystem SMR (eine Anpassung des RMR an Böschungen) wird an Hand der Daten von 87 Böschungen im Gebiet von Valencia überdacht. In einem Forschungsprojekt wurde das SMR in einem Geographischen Informationssystem (GIS) als Methode zur Vorhersage von Stabilitätsproblemen bei zukünftigen Straßenbauprojekten eingesetzt. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung einer Methodologie für die GIS-Anwendung

The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. This paper deals with various factors affecting the strength of chromite briquettes which plays a vital role in the smelting of charge chrome / ferro chrome production. Appropriate briquetting parameters like molasses and lime binder level, molasses quality, particle size distribution and segment condition etc. are essential to guarantee quality briquettes in the successful use of briquette and chromite ore fines. In developing a technology for briquetting of chromite ores, it is important not only to study the grain size characteristics of the chrome ore fines but also to make an informed choice of the type and quality of the binder and the condition for producing a physically and chemically competent green and cured briquette. This paper also describes the effect of strength of briquettes on various parameters of charge chrome production as the use of quality briquettes in the production of high carbon ferrochrome alloys has a number of operational, metallurgical and economic advantages. It is also a requirement for submerged arc furnace operation that the charge be adequately porous to allow gaseous products of the reduction reaction to escape from the furnace charge burden without hindrance. Otherwise, furnace material would erupt causing electrodes and furnace other equipments damage and risking the safety of the work force. The briquette, because it replaces lumpy charge but has an advantage of smaller size, allows for an uniform and porous charge so that the ascending gaseous products can escape freely. Finally this paper deals with furnace operational results with varying proportion of briquettes having same strength.

The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

This paper summarizes the results from a project aimed at adapting scroll centrifuges for application to the dewatering of flotation concentrates. The main impetus for the project was to reduce the high cost and footprint size of the technology currently used to dewater fine coal. The technical challenge was to enhance solids capture by incorporating a laser-cut screen into the design of the basket. The project has shown that a pilot-scale scroll centrifuge can be used to dewater froth concentrate. A number of different basket designs were tested, the best results being achieved with a basket comprising a laser-cut screen of aperture 70 µm. The best result on a sample of untreated flotation concentrate, which was taken from the open trough flotation cells at a coal preparation plant (CPP) in NSW was a solids recovery of 82 wt% at a product moisture of 24.3wt%. By comparison the best product achieved with a conventional wedge wire basket was a similar moisture content but solids recovery was only 64 wt%. This could only be achieved after the feed had been artificially thickened. Conditioning of the centrifuge feed with polymer flocculants led to an increase in recovery up to 88 wt% with a moisture content of ca 25 wt%. It is thought that optimizing additive selection and conditioning parameters, as well as screen aperture and open area, could improve performance still further. The results were obtained using centrifuging conditions (centrifugal force, feed solids, feed rate) in the pilot-scale machine which should be possible to translate into conventional designs of commercial scale machines, without downgrading solids throughputs. However only with full-scale trials will it be possible to establish this assertion with certainty.

Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.
