Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis has been widely adopted in the geochemical and environmental field as a cost-saving alternative to standard analyses. This paper outlines the efficacy of a method for indirectly quantifying organic copper content in solvent extraction circuits via stripping of the chelated metal with concentrated sulfuric acid in a single contact and subsequent pXRF aqueous analysis. pXRF analysis is common within the mining industry but presents unique challenges with liquid analysis, the most prevalent of which are briefly discussed. This method was developed specifically for mining operations with regional constraints and limited resources. Providing an in-field alternative to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, this entirely mobile XRF analysis method produces consistent and accurate results within minutes and at a fraction of the cost.

"In atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the sample is heated to a high temperature and thereby decomposed into atoms and ions that absorb or emit visible or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation at energies characteristic of the elements involved. The flame test is a very simple form of this technique. The yellowing of a flame by the addition of salt, for example, occurs because the sodium in salt emits strongly in the yellow portion of the visible spectrum. These methods are especially useful for low concentrations of metallic elements in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.Interference on Iep-OES has not always been considered a serious problem, especially in the beginning, when compared with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. This was due to the euphoria created by the new technique. It meant that criticism was subdued. The Iep was vastly superior to the Atomic Absorption technique, that the interferences suffered by the Atomic Absorption technique dwarfed the little interferences suffered by the rep-OES technique. This is how rep-OES has had a reputation as an interference free technique."

Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

During the exploration phase of mine development, drilling location is in the hands of the geologist, and drilling is spread over the entire domain of the property or deposit boundary. During the mine planning and production phases, however, the mining engineer also needs to use the information obtained from the drilling program. Thus it is important that he/she have some input into the selection of the drillhole locations. Usually, when exploitation will center on one portion of the property for the immediate future, the mine engineer will want to have more of the drilling performed in this area. In the early stages, the purpose of the drilling was to make a decision concerning whether or not to develop a mine. Once the decision is made to proceed with this development, the mine engineer needs to know, with as much confidence as possible, the estimate of the ore grade at each location where mining will occur. This paper addresses the problem of drillhole location for the needs of the mining engineer. The goal is to compare a variety of approaches to drillhole location with a new approach developed by the author. This approach is based on the theory of geostatistics, with the estimation variance used as the quantitative measure of the confidence attained. The goal of the algorithm is to select those locations that minimize the estimation variance subject to constraints on the number of drillholes and the total cost of the drilling program. The kriging equations are used as another set of constraints. The resulting nonlinear optimization model is expressed in terms of binary (0 - 1) decision variables leading to a solution by the branch-and-bound procedure. The algorithm has been applied at a number of operating properties, and practical results and suggestions for implementation are provided.

"Cut-off grade is a decision-making criterion often used for determining the quantities of material (ore and waste) to be mined, ore processed, and saleable product. It therefore directly affects the cash flows from a mining operation and the net present value (NPV) of a mining project. A series of different cut-off grades that are applied over the life of mine (LOM) of an operation defines a cut-off grade policy. Due to the complexity of the calculation process, previous work on cut-off grade calculation has mostly focused on deterministic approaches. However, deterministic approaches fail to capture the uncertainty inherent in input parameters such as commodity price and grade-tonnage distribution. This paper presents a stochastic cut-off grade optimization model that extends Lane’s deterministic theory for calculating optimal cut-off grades over the LOM. The model, code-named ‘NPVMining’, uses realistic grade-tonnage realizations and commodity price distribution to account for uncertainty. NPVMining was applied to a gold mine case study and produced an NPV ranging between 7% and 186% higher than NPVs from deterministic approaches, thus demonstrating improved project value from using stochastic optimization approaches. A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. "The purpose of this study was to demonstrate unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology in opencast highwall mapping using the experience at Isibonelo Colliery in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. In opencast mines, geological mapping has evolved over time and there have been challenges in extracting valuable information from exposed highwalls due to restricted access for safety reasons. A UAS was used at Isibonelo Colliery to conduct highwall mapping, using drone-based digital photogrammetry techniques. A demonstration survey was undertaken during February 2018. The highwall flyover demonstration was planned for two areas (North and South pits) where field control points were placed by the mine survey department. A contractor used a DJI Phantom 4 (Pro) for the highwall mapping. Raw data was processed within 48 hours and a 3D model of the mapped pit area was produced. Further data extraction included obtaining updated weathering and lithological contact elevations and thicknesses for use in short-term planning. The results showed a good correlation between the resource model and the UAS data model. The project was considered a success and highwall flyover mapping and is now standard practice at Isibonelo Colliery.IntroductionDetailed geological mapping is crucial to the understanding of the structure of any mineral deposit. Several mapping methods may be applied depending on the available exposure/outcrop and nature of the orebody; for example, coal deposits typically suboutcrop only, therefore an opencut highwall provides the best exposure for mapping the geology. Mapped information, when incorporated into a resource model (generated from exploration borehole data), improves the understanding of the orebody or coal seam. This research paper focused on the use of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology for pit highwall mapping to generate data for updating geological models and avail the latest information to mine planning to improve the short-term plans."

"The purpose of executing a project in a stagewise fashion is to evaluate all potential options in a cost-effective manner and develop an understanding of the project drivers, thereby minimizing overall project risk to the client. Among the more valuable tools for this exercise are production and financial models that can be used to quantify the sensitivity of the project to the critical parameters.The mine and concentrator used in this case study are located on the Kalahari Copper Belt, which extends from Zambia through northern Botswana into Namibia. This area of Africa has seen very little industrial development and the project will create much-needed employment and development in the region.The success of this project thus far can be attributed to the close cooperation between the geological, mining, and metallurgical disciplines. Regular updates of projected capital and operating cost estimates coupled with project outputs guided the teams in optimizing their various discipline models, ultimately delivering a compelling argument for the execution of the project. Key to the success was the development of a geometallurgical model for the prediction of concentrate tonnage, grade, and recovery for the life of the mine from the mining plan.This paper summarizes the metallurgical findings and the outcome of the various project stages. The development of the model is discussed, as are the challenges faced in developing a suitable metallurgical process route. IntroductionThe Kalahari Copper BeltThe Kalahari Copperbelt, which extends from Zambia across northwest Botswana into Namibia, is considered to be a broad time equivalent of the Central African Copperbelt, with a similar style of mineralization. However, at shallower depths (<25 m), chrysocolla and malachite exist in significant proportions in certain geological areas. As illustrated in Figure 1, the project is located in the Ghanzi-Chobe Fold Belt which forms part of the Kalahari Copper Belt. The Ghanzi Group, which overlies the lowest stratigraphic unit (the Kwebe Formation), consists of three formations, namely the Ngwako Pan, the D’Kar, and the Mamuno Formation (Hall, 2012)."

This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

Owing to the high ore grades in the African Copperbelt and variable acid consumption, agitated leaching is common practice and is used more widely in Africa than in other regions. Two common challenges for agitated leach–solvent extraction circuits are higher presence of colloidal silica in the pregnant leach solution and elevated levels of total suspended solids. Both can negatively affect the physical and metallurgical performance of the solvent-extraction circuit, and lead to higher processing costs or reduced copper production. Operating in organic continuity is preferred to address such challenges, but is not always possible: additional treatment options may be advantageous. For this reason, Solvay recently introduced ACORGA® CR60LT, a new chemical additive to address these concerns. Continuous addition to the pregnant leach solution improves physical performance without negatively affecting Cu transfer or cathode quality. Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

Mine planning is a complex function and also a vital one. The quality of the planning has a profound effect on the efficiency and the economics of every mining operation. It is therefore important that the function should not be reliant upon only a few techniques but should have command of an orchestra of them. Then the most appropriate can be selected for each application or, if it is advantageous, a group can be employed in concert. This paper introduces peripheral algebra as a set of techniques which should be included in the mine planning orchestra. Its objective is primarily to stimulate more development not only of these techniques but also others of a similar kind which will increase the effectiveness of mine planning.

Atomaer (Pty) Ltd is a technology-driven company with interests in Western Australian nickel. Atomaer (RSA) Pty Ltd is a process technology company operating in Southern Africa. It is a subsidiary of Atomaer Holdings Pty Limited (Atomaer), which has operating companies in Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe. In addition, Atomaer has substantial shareholdings in Braemore Resources Plc, a nickel company with interests in sulphide nickel projects in Western Australia and Southern Africa listed on the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange (AIM); Mintails Limited, a gold company with interests in gold operations in South Africa listed on the Australia Stock Exchange; and Brinkley Mining Plc, a uranium company with interests in Southern Africa listed on the AIM. Independence Platinum Limited (IPt) has been formed by Atomaer to undertake the commercial development and exploitation of Mintek&apos;s ConRoast technology with the strategic objective of providing independent smelting and refining facilities with lower capital and operating costs for the treatment and processing of platinum concentrates, including those with high chrome and/or nickel and/or low platinum group metal values, for the development of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa. The platinum mines of South Africa have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex for platinum production. However, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade, all of the platinum producers have begun to mine the UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. UG2 ore usually has lower platinum group metal contents and higher chrome values. The new junior resource companies have gained access primarily to UG2 reefs. Consequently, platinum mining is becoming more UG2-based and the resulting concentrates contain high levels of chromitite. UG2 concentrates are difficult to smelt in the current six-in-line submerged arc furnaces, and this leads to increased capital and operating costs for those smelting operations. The platinum mines of South Africa produce the majority of the world&apos;s platinum metal used in automotive catalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at a healthy rate into the future, the SA producers Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin, and Northam are planning to expand mining operations in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller new producers who are accessing other mineral resources are entering the buoyant market and will produce platinum concentrates for purchase or toll treatment. Hence, a shortage in both smelting and refining capacities is anticipated. Further smelting and refining facilities independent of the major platinum producers will be required in South Africa by 2010. Mintek&apos;s ConRoast technology is best suited to fill the need to treat a high proportion of UG2 concentrates in a cost-effective and technically efficient manner. Atomaer base metals technology has been developed for rapid leaching of nickel and other base metals from alloy. Significant reductions in capital and operating costs are expected from the combination of the two advances in process technology compared with that installed at the existing smelters and refineries that were established over 20 years ago. Independence Platinum will be listed on AIM and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2007, and developed as an independent, vertically-integrated platinum company using its independent smelting and base metals refining facilities as a strategic platform to promote the development and mining of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa through technical co-operation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, off-take, toll-refining, and marketing agreements.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

About 90 percent of the coal mined underground in the U.S.A. today is mined by the room-and-pillar system. The productivity of the system dropped from about 14,1t per man-day in 1969 to about 7,3 t per man-day in 1978. Since 1974, the U.S. Department of Energy (formerly the U.S. Bureau of Mines) has been engaged in research to improve the production and productivity of the room-and-pillar system. The effort involves the development of integrated, automated, and remote-controlled equipment and systems including remote-controlled continuous miners, automated miner-bolters, automated extraction systems, continuous haulage systems for use behind miners, and remote-controlled equipment for miners, bolters, and shuttle cars. These systems are discussed briefly, the discussion being related primarily to coal winning, although the concepts could be utilized in room-and-pillar systems in mines other than coal mines.

The South African mining industry has committed to achieving a state of zero harm for its workforce, with a strong emphasis on worker health and safety. Among the major safety concerns are falls of ground, a leading cause of injuries and fatalities. Ground-penetrating radar, a non-destructive geophysical method, is recognised for its ability to image structures, fractures, and geological features within the rock mass. However, ground penetrating radar data is often acquired in local coordinates, posing challenges for visualisation in mine computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. This study explores the pivotal role of light detection and ranging data in transforming ground penetrating radar data from local survey coordinates to absolute mine coordinates. A comprehensive georeferencing methodology is presented, providing the stepwise progression from the initial georeferencing of ground penetrating radar data to the ultimate integration of ground penetrating radar and light detection and ranging datasets, resulting in the creation of a ground penetrating radar-light detection and ranging three-dimensional model. The proposed approach not only facilitates the integration of but also offers a practical means of visualising the integrated datasets within commonly used computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. An essential aspect of this integration is the adoption of non-proprietary data formats, specifically American Standard Code for Information Interchange text files, ensuring broader accessibility and compatibility. The potential for integrating diverse datasets to construct insightful models of the underground mining environment is illustrated. Integration of different datasets has the potential to offer a holistic understanding of the mining environment, providing essential information to decision-makers.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. IntroductionThe sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning (EW) circuits require an indepth understanding of the fundamental parameters as well as the practical requirements to optimize cellhouse productivity and capital cost.
