The optimal use of these resources for the benefit of all South Africa?s peoples is a goal shared by industry, government and all South Africans. The challenge is to grow the industry in accordance with demand growth and thus to manage a long-term stable growth pattern for PGM usage world-wide. Amplats and the South African producers are well able to meet this challenge [ ] South Africa plays a critical role in the provision of Platinum Group Metals for world markets. In fact no other country has the productive capacity nor the geological reserves to supply the world?s platinum needs. The world required some 5 million ounces of Platinum in 1997 and South Africa supplied a full 74% thereof. The second major supplier, Russia provided a further 18% of world demand, primarily as a by-product of nickel production. Amplats satisfied about 37% of total world demand followed by Impala 20% and Lonhro at 12%.

Experimental studies for quantification of force and brittleness indices relevant to rock cutting performance are presented. A simple interpretation method is developed, which quantifies the force-penetration response obtained from indentation tests. Basic parameters of the quantification are force increment and decrementrates, force increment and decrement periods, and number of increment and decrement data points. Blocks of eleven different rock samples were collected from different operating mines in Turkey and subjected to indentation tests to calculate the indices. The samples included harzburgite, serpentinite, trona, limestone, claystone, two different sandstone samples, siltstone and three different chromite ore samples. The concept was validated by a set of full-scale linear cutting tests using a conical cutter for measuring the cutting performance in relieved and unrelieved conditions, i.e. cutter forces, specific energy, size distribution of rock cuttings. The rock cuttings were sieved to determine coarseness index, indicates coarse chip generation characteristics, and size distribution. The force index is moderately correlated with the cutting performance and mechanical properties of the rocks, and poorly correlated with the coarseness index and size distribution of cuttings. A general and moderate trend is observed between the brittleness index and the coarseness index, cutting performance for unrelieved cutting conditions and mechanical properties of the rocks. However, additional data is required to fill the data gaps and to potentially establish relationship between the brittleness index and all other parameters.

"Large quantities of slag are produced every year and dumped on slag heaps around the world, posing a potential environmental threat due to contained heavy metals content. Slags are waste minerals produced during furnace smelting of minerals. The contained values of base metals may be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions polluting ground and underground water. Copper losses into slag are a continuous problem in pyrometallurgical smelting operations. Due to shortage of ore concentrate, various mining operations have initiated the recovery of copper from dumped slag. The typical process uses crushing, milling and flotation. These operations create excessive liner wear rates during crushing and milling because the bond work index of copper slag is 22 kWh/t and this is considered a very hard slag. The process also has reduced flotation recoveries and requires high flotation reagent consumption. The present work shows that digestion of the milled copper slag slurry with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 250oC forms a solid cake and leaching of the solid cake with water is a possible option. However, the consumption of sulphuric acid can have a considerable cost on the recovery process. This can be limited by producing a leach residue containing gypsum and silicate materials as amorphous silica which are suitable for use as an additive for Portland cement. Laboratory results show that 90% copper recoveries can be achieved. The leaching is conducted to prevent silica gel formation and iron co-extraction. Leaching is optimum if silica gel-free solutions and good filterable residue are obtained. INTRODUCTION Slag is a waste by-product of smelting and converting operations in metallurgical plants. Both smelting and converting operations are aimed at iron separation from base metal sulphides in non-ferrous metallurgy. The iron sulphide component of the ore or concentrate is oxidized to iron oxide at higher temperatures in the molten form, and then fluxed with silica and other oxide rock minerals to produce fayalite (2FeO•SiO2) slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Slags are generally deposited on dumps and considered to be unreactive materials. Smelter copper slag contains significant concentrations of several potentially toxic elements, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, barium, zinc and copper. These elements can be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions and cause pollution of soils, surface waters and groundwater (David, 1998)."

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

"SynopsisRock mass classification systems constitute an integral part of empirical underground excavation design. One system that is commonly used to classify rock mass is the Rock Mass Rating, or RMR, system. The RMR system has evolved over time to better reflect the perceived influence of various rock mass factors on excavation stability. While the introduced modifications have enhanced the applicability of this classification system, there are still areas that cause potential ambiguity. The RMR system cannot deal with input data ambiguities, uncertainties, and vagueness. To deal with the uncertainty, a Fuzzy Rock Mass Rating (FRMR) has been developed. This study aims to describe the main concept of the fuzzy approach, which is implemented in the FRMR to classify rock mass. The FRMR considers the uncertainty associated with the input data (uncertain variables) used in rock mass classification. The Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) area 3 iron ore deposits in the south of Iran were chosen as the case study for investigating the applicability of FRMR. The results of this study show that the FRMR software tool can easily be used for rock mass classification, even if uncertain input parameters have been used. FRMR consists of three parts, each of which is suitable for certain conditions.IntroductionNowadays, rock engineering classification systems, which constitute the backbone of the empirical design approach, are widely employed in both civil engineering and mining engineering. Rock mass classifications have recently been quite popular and are being used mostly for the preliminary design and planning purposes of projects. According to Bieniawski (1989), a rock mass classification scheme is intended to classify the rock masses, provide a basis for estimating deformation and strength properties, supply quantitative data for support estimation, and present a platform for communication between the exploration, design, and construction groups."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

Comminution and flotation circuits are frequently perturbed by disturbances, such as feed particle size variations, ore hardness and varying mineral liberation, which can have a significant impact on the recoveries and grades. Although advanced control strategies can neutralize many of these disturbances, few such systems have been implemented at present. One reason is that it is only recently that the requisite sensor systems have been developed and used to control froth flotation systems. Another is owed to the complexity of these non-linear interactive systems. In this paper, a plant-wide control strategy is considered, wherein both unit operations have a single overall control objective. The automated design of the controller is based on an advanced evolutionary algorithm viz., Symbiotic, Memetic Neuro-Evolution (SMNE), for developing neural network controllers in a reinforcement learning framework. A rigorous phenomenological comminution and flotation model was used to develop suitable neurocontrollers, which used all possible sensor inputs and available manipulated variables. The neurocontroller managed to identify optimal or near-optimal operating conditions consistently and showed robust performance in the presence of significant disturbances. The results suggest that evolutionary reinforcement learning offers a very competitive approach towards the development of integrated non-linear controllers for mineral processing plants. The University of New South Wales (UNSW Australia) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 15 years. AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment) was developed by iCinema as a collaborative venture between UNSW?s Faculties of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts. This is the world?s first 360°-surround, virtual reality (VR) stereo projection theatre system. The School of Mining Engineering at UNSW Australia has developed 18 different virtual reality modules aimed at mine safety training and mining engineering education. These modules are being regularly used in both the mining industry and the university. The School of Mining Engineering is continuously involved in the development of different modules. Research is also currently being conducted on the implementation of other technologies into this environment. Artificial intelligence (AI) and fuzzy logic are tools that the authors would like to consider implementing in future module development. This paper will review current research in both these areas and consider options for applying these technologies.

The analysis of structure using joint set statistics is well known. Other data such as the position of discontinuities and the contacts between rock mass units cannot be easily incorporated in simple statistical analysis based on orientation alone. Algorithms to model the structure of rock slopes using measurements of the orientation and position of discontinuities are being developed by CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These algorithms provide a capability to model the structure of a rock slope and estimate the likelihood of the formation of hazardous blocks in existing or proposed rock slopes and identification of the location and size of these blocks. The algorithms provide the basis of structural modelling to identify potential failure mechanisms in rock slopes.

This paper presents a new approach capable of volume calculation of 3D reconstructed geological objects. The method is based on a well-known concept that states the volume of an object can be computed as the limit of the sum of the area of infinite number of sections, which cut the 3Dobject. Since shortage of input data about the geological objects usually exists, Mathematical Morphology and polynomial interpolation are employed to generate a set of intermediate sections between the set of initial sections. A Mathematical Morphology tool is applied to compute the area of the two of sets initial and generated 2D sections. Regularities together with Delaunay Triangulation are employed to perform 3D reconstruction. A formula is developed on purpose of volume calculation of the reconstructed objects. A set of ten theoretical, electrical resistivity cross-sections were generated and used to perform an experiment to show the capability of our approach to estimate the volume of complex 3D geological object in case of sparse 2D sections. The volume determined using the morphological approach presented in this paper show good correlation with the volume of the original input object. Advantages and disadvantages of our volume calculation approach are discussed in the conclusion of this paper. The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

By implementing a converter downstream of the reduction furnace it is possible to broaden the product range significantly. The converter can also successfully be used to strip furnace slag from chromium oxide. Some process alternatives and their economical, practical and environmental implications are studied using process models developed based on UHT?s long experience in stainless steelmaking, stainless steel process control and charge chrome refining. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion is often applied to a wider range of rocks than the isotropic rock masses to which it is strictly applicable. This paper evaluates the patterns of defects in rock masses using spherical projection contour plots of samples of randomly-generated orientations and datasets from mapping of New Zealand closely-jointed greywacke rock masses. Two indices from the contour plots - the area within the 1% contour (A1%) and maximum concentration (Cmax) are introduced for distinguishing uniform (isotropic), random or regular defect patterns. The indices provide a potential extension to current guidelines on the use of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The paper also outlines kinematic checks to assess the influence of defect clusters on rock mass strength. Das Hoek-Brown Bruchkriterium, das strikte nur fuer isotrope Gefuege gilt, findet oft einen viel weiteren Anwendungsbereich. Diese Arbeit bewertet diverse Dispersionsmuster der Defekte einer Gesteinsmasse. Wir vergleichen in sphaerischer Projektion (1) Beispiele zufaelliger Orientierung von Defekten und (2) Felddaten ueber neuseelaendisache engstaendig geklueftete Grauwacken. Die Projektionen werden durch die Indices A1% (Flaechenanteil des 1%-Bereichs) and Cmax (Hoechstkonzentration) gekennzeichnet, welche isotrope, zufaellige und regulaere Muster unterscheiden und die aktuellen Richtlinien zum Hoek-Brown Kriterium ergaenzen. Wir testen ferner Defektgruppen der Gesteine kinematisch auf ihren Einfluss auf Massenfestigkeit. Le critère de rupture de Hoek-Brown est souvent utilisé sur une variété de roches plus étendue que les masses rocheuses auxquelles il est strictement applicable. Ce travail évalue la distribution des défauts au sein d'une masse rocheuse en utilisant une projection sphérique des contours d'échantillons d'orientations générées aléatoirement et de données de cartographie provenant de greywackes à joints rapprochés de Nouvelle Zélande. Deux indices de cette projection - la zone des contours en dessous de 1 % (A1%) et celle de concentration maximum (Cmax) sont introduites pour distinguer les répartitions uniformes (isotropes), aléatoires ou régulières. Ces indices fournissent une extension potentielle aux règles d'utilisation du critère de rupture de Hoek-Brown. The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

Previous fundamental research projects have indicated the value of continuous closure measurements in deep tabular excavations for improved support design, hazard assessment and for quantifying the effect of seismicity on stope closure. This paper describes further measurements in a VCR stope to validate some of the earlier findings. Calculation of the closure ratio showed that it is a good measure to identify different ground conditions and possible hazards. This work was supported by numerical modelling results, which showed that the closure ratio is very useful in discriminating the response of different geotechnical environments. Des projets précédents de recherche fondamentale ont démontré la valeur de mesures continues de fermeture dans le cas de profondes excavations tabulaires pour une conception améliorée du soutien, de l’évaluation du danger et pour quantifier l’effet de la séismicité sur l'affaissement du toit d’un chantier d’abattage. Le présent document décrit d’autres mesures dans un chantier d’abattage VCR afin de valider certaines des conclusions précédemment formulées. Le calcul du degré d'affaissement montre qu’il y va de soi d’identifier différentes conditions de sol ainsi que les dangers possibles. Les présents travaux ont été confirmés par des résultats de modélisation numérique, lesquels ont démontré que le taux d'affaissement est très utile quant à discerner la réponse dans des environnements géotechniques différents. Vorherige Forschungsprojekte haben den Wert von kontinuierlichen Setzungsmessungen im tiefen Sudafrikanischen Strebabbau angedeutet, vor allem fur Ausbaudesign und Risikobewertung, als auch fur die quantitative Bestimmungen der seismizitatsabhangigen Setzung. Dieses Referat beschreibt weitere Messungen in einer VCR Grube um fruhere Bestimmungen zu bewerten. Dass errechnete Konvergenzverhaltniss erweiste sich als eine gute Massnahme zur bestimmung von geotechnischen Zonen und moglichen Risiken. Numerische Analyse unterstutzte die vorliegende Arbeit und deutete darauf, dass das Konvergenzverhaltniss sehr brauchbar ist um Verhaltensunterschiede der geotechnischen Zonen zu erproben

Carbothermic process of Ferro Silicon production is primarily a slag-less process. However, slag formation is observed in the regular operation as experienced by almost all the Ferro Silicon Producers in different pro-portions. The problem of slagging in the furnaces may be due to: a)Variation in the input burden charge material quality b)Fluctuations in the Carbon balance and/or c)Fluctuations in the Electrode penetrations The problem will be more severe in nature with the increase of the size of the furnace. The operation performance of the furnace gets badly affected if the slag formed in the furnace is not removed from the bath in time and to the maximum extent possible. It is, therefore, very essential to know the characteristics of the slag formed in the Ferro Silicon Furnaces, besides eliminating the very cause of formation itself; and to find the routes of draining of the same from the furnace bath effectively. This paper envisages the effects of using the LIME STONE in the Ferro Silicon Burden in stabilizing the 48MVA Furnace for improved performance and better consistency. Quality fluctuations in the available Raw Materials are compared with that of the requirements for the Ferro Silicon production. The furnace operational data is compared for 12 months period each for the period corresponding to the before and after usage of lime stone in the burden and found encouraging results in the performance. Implications of use of Lime Stone in the burden on the quality of the output alloy are also studied.

In today’s uncertain world, it is important to make the right choices. The mining industry in South Africa finds itself in a difficult situation. Operating conditions are tough, the socio-political environment is complex, and financial performance is under pressure. The choices made by all the stakeholders in this industry in the short term will shape the future of the industry. This paper characterizes some of the big, difficult decisions faced by the mining industry in the South African context, and discusses how these decisions could be approached in a fact-based and robust way.

"SynopsisCost estimation for surface coal mines is a critical practice that affects both profitability and competitiveness. New mines require these costs to be estimated using available information before a project begins. The competitive advantage of a new mine depends on it being both efficient and cost-effective. Low-cost producing mines have a higher chance of survival in a low-price environment than do high-cost producers. The competitiveness and profitability of a coal mine is based on the costs of production and the supply position on the cost curve. There is no single method of cost estimation, and the available methods consider only one or a few variables, leaving out multiple variables that could significantly affect the estimation of mine costs. Mining companies are thus searching extensively for a method that will increase accuracy in the estimation and evaluation of mining projectsThis paper highlights the shortcomings of the available approaches and proposes a data envelopment analysis method to develop a frontier for effective surface coal mines, and the use of a parametric method for modelling the costs and productivity of new mines to ensure effective competitiveness. The models will extend the capability of estimation and the accuracy of estimates using the efficient decision-making units, by considering the optimal mine-specific and external variables affecting costs.IntroductionCoal contributes 25% of the world’s primary energy needs, after fuel oil, which contributes 35%. The world energy demand, estimated over the period 1990 to 2030, is expanding at a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.7% (Schernikau, 2010, p. 14). This emphasizes the need for enhancing the production of existing mines, as well as opening new mines in order to increase the supply of coal."

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied.
