"SynopsisThe tetraethylammonium salt of the mono-anionic coordination compound mer-oxidotrichlorido(thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- K2O,O’)niobate(V) (NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)], has been prepared under aerobic conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. (NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)] crystallized in the monoclinic P21/c space group, with a = 11.483 (5), b = 12.563 (5), c = 17.110(5) Å, and ß = 100.838 (5)o. The complex structure exists in a 50.0% (NbA) : 50.0% (NbB) positional disorder ratio.IntroductionComplexes containing organometallic type ß- diketone ligands with O,O and O,N donor atoms are used widely in coordination chemistry and have applications in catalysis, radiopharmaceuticals, etc. (Schutte et al., 2011; Roodt, Visser and Brink, 2011; Brink et al., 2010; Otto et al., 1998). These ligand systems are very useful because of their highly coordinative nature, high solubility, and also due to their ability to be functionalized with various substituents on the carbonyl carbon atoms (Schutte et al., 2011).Only a small number of ß-diketonate ligands have successfully been coordinated to a Nb(V) metal centre, with only a select few being characterized by X-ray crystallography (Viljoen, 2009; Bullen, Mason and Pauling, 1965; Preuss, Lamding and Mueller-Becker, 1994; Funk, 1934; Davies, Leedlam and Jones, 1999; Allen, 2002. The synthesis and crystal structure determination at room temperature of mer-oxidotrichlorido (thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- k2O,O’)niobate(V) {(NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)]} was first reported by Daran et al. in 1979. Accordingly, for this current investigation, (NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)] was re-evaluated at 100 K to determine if the structural features might change with temperature."

"The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."

Several high-impact tailings dam failures around the world in recent years have placed a renewed focus on the stability of tailings dams and pointed to potential shortcomings in traditional drained design and safety evaluation procedures. A need to consider undrained shear strength in the design of tailings facilities has become apparent. However, there are specific requirements that need to be met before undrained shearing occurs. In South Africa, the last major failure was likely the Merriespruit disaster in 1994, which leads to the question of whether the conditions required for undrained shearing are readily applicable to South African tailings dams. This paper describes research at the University of Pretoria that has recently commenced to further investigate the conditions required for undrained failure to occur. The research includes laboratory and field testing to replicate these conditions in the laboratory and relate them to those found in an active tailings dam.

In metal mines, comminution is commonly used to liberate minerals for subsequent mineral concentration processes, such as flotation, magnetic separation and gravity separation. However, ores are aggregates of valuable minerals and their disseminated gangue minerals, and these minerals exhibit diverse comminution behaviours. In carbonate-bearing iron ores, hematite, siderite, and quartz are the predominant minerals, of which hematite is the objective recoverable mineral. In this regard, the present study aimed to identify the imperfections in siderite minerals by X-ray computed tomography (XCT), and thus quantitatively characterise their size and shape in terms of Feret diameter and aspect ratio, as well as other parameters. XCT images indicated the protogenetic ubiquity of pores <5 μm in diameter and cracks of 7-8 μm inside siderite particles. In the ground product of artificially mixed siderite and hematite, siderite particles were smaller than hematite particles. Siderite particles had a larger surface area and greater surface roughness than hematite particles of the same volume, which was attributable to the intrinsic holes and cracks in siderite particles. This study provides an insight into the relationship between the inherent imperfections of minerals and their comminution properties. The past decade has seen a renewed possibility of using machine learning algorithms to solve a large collection of problems in several fields. Data acquisition for mining operations has increased with the growth in sensor-based technologies, and therefore the amount of information available for mining applications has dramatically increased. Ore sorting equipment is available for separating ore from waste based on differences in physical properties detected by a real-time analyser. The separation efficiency depends on the contrast in these properties. In this study we investigate the application of machine learning models trained using data from the output of a dual-energy X-ray ore sorting apparatus at a gold mine. The particles were first hand-sorted into ore and gangue classes based on their mineralogical composition. Classification models were then used to help decide the balance between the number of true and false positives for ore in the concentrate, with a view to economic parameters, using their receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves. The results showed AUC (area under the ROC curve) scores of up to 0.85 for the classification models and a maximum reward condition Fpr/Tpr around 0.5/0.9 for a simplified economic model.

Coal mining in China is facing the transition from output to quality. Based on the total mining capacity and average production, the current situation of coal mining at mine, city, and province levels is analysed, and data in support for the layout of sustainable mining development and the optimization of output provided. The results show that 87% of China's coal is mined by underground methods, with an average production capacity of 0.93 Mt/a per mine. Open pit mining accounts for 13%, with an average mine production capacity of 5.73 Mt/a. The average mining capacity of coal mines in China is 1.05 Mt/a, with 1181 coal mines with an average capacity less than 0.3 Mt/a, accounting for 35% of the total coal mines but contributing only 4.51% to output. They are distributed in about 48 cities in six provinces, seriously restricting the transition to green coal mining. The coal industry should speed up the closure of small coal mines in key provinces and cities, eliminate outdated production capacity in the central region, increase the speed and proportion of coal resources moving westward, and promote high-quality development of coal mining.

Discussion: A. Hazell (Associate Member) and T. J. Kotze (Graduate Member): The authors must be congratulated on the development of a versatile computer programme for determining the stresses and displacements resulting from mining operations. As a design tool it will no doubt take its rightful place together with the analogue computer. Union Corporation made use of this digital computer programme whilst still in its development stage to determine the stress distributions which were causing the unexpected failure of the Marievale sub-incline shaft. Two features arising from this investigation may be of interest to members, namely: A. The solution to the problem of stabilizing a rectangular inclined shaft, which turned out to be contrary to accepted mining practice, and B. A comparison between the results obtained with the pure digital system and the analogue computer. A. The shaft is nine ft high and 20 ft wide, dipping at 9° to the horizontal and crossing the bedding planes. Fig. 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 is a section of the sub-incline shaft pillar area showing the relative positions of the shaft and reef as well as their respective dips. The deepest point in the shaft is 3 300 ft below surface and the requirement of a stress free ground surface may not be satisfied. It also means that the original gravitational stresses are low. A 900 ft wide pillar was left to protect the bottom section of the shaft, the top section being understoped years ago. Extraction of the pillar was started at the beginning of last year, mining operations being carried out in the accepted manner, starting beneath the shaft and mining outwards. The approach did, however, turn out to be the wrong one, because failure of the shaft was noticed soon afterwards. Even small movements were serious in this case due to the low clearance between the skips and the shaft supports. During October, 1968, failure between benchmarks 8 and 10 (see Fig. 1) became so excessive that hoisting speeds had to be reduced. Failure continued to occur and, by the end of March, 1969, failure had propagated up the shaft as far as benchmark 7, and down as far as benchmark 12. As this shaft had a tight hoisting schedule it was imperative that a quick solution be found to arrest the failure.

One of the biggest problems in open pit mining is slope stability. The avoidance of slope stability problems depends on a comprehensive assessment of environmental and operational factors such as geology, climate, and mining activities. In the light of these considerations, slope geometries should be determined in accordance with engineering principles. In this research, the slope stability of rock slopes in a mine opened in a gneiss geological unit has been studied. Production activities were ceased in 2019 due to the slope movements in the eastern part of the quarry. In order to safely continue the production, field works were primarily carried out. To assess slope stability, detailed discontinuity surveys were carried out on bench faces. Subsequently, kinematic and numerical analyses were employed to identify geometries that are expected to maintain stability under the prevailing geological structures and environmental constraints. Engineering geological studies such as scanline measurements in steps and investigation of potential failure mechanisms by kinematic analysis technique were carried out. Small module reactor and Q-slope rock mass classification systems were used to evaluate slope stability. Based on these classification systems potential unstable rock slopes were identified and thematic maps were created using geographic information systems. The most suitable slope geometries are suggested for these slopes. In addition, the improvement methods suggested by the rock mass classification systems were proposed for these slopes.

The potential benefits of implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) on mining infrastructure projects were explored through two case studies in the South African mining industry. The first part of the study involved measurement of the impact of LPS through earned value techniques on secondary project data. The second part sought to establish the lean construction success factors leading to improvements in construction performance. This was done by means of a research questionnaire distributed to the project owner’s teams, contracted parties, and the LPS facilitators. The results revealed a positive correlation between LPS application and planned percentage complete. However, the performance achieved during the LPS pilot was not sustained. The success factors and benefits considered most evident in the case study pilot differed among the three stakeholder groups. The findings are expected to guide construction stakeholders to better define performance measures and focus on factors required to make LPS implementation more effective in the South African mining sector.

Iron ore pellets experience degradation during handling due low energy impacts and stresses. These impacts lead to volume or surface breakage of the pellets, creating fine particles that accumulate along the process. Some of the particles are in contact with the air and are dragged as dust into the workplace or into the atmosphere. The aerodynamic size of the particles allows them to be potentially inhaled by the workers or to be carried to nearby communities. Dust emission becomes critical at specific locations, such as transfer chutes and stockpiles. This work models the dust generation that occurs in an iron ore pellet stockyard using a methodology that combines experiments to quantify the degradation of the pellets to mathematical modelling of the dust emission mechanisms in the stockyard. First, laboratory tests were used to characterise the amount of mass and the particle size distribution of the dust generated by degradation under controlled conditions. Second, the flow over a stockpile of an iron ore pellet company was simulated with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Third, semiempirical equations linked the data generated by simulations and laboratory tests to estimate the dust emission in the stockyard. Finally, results were validated with measured field data, obtained with a novel online measurement tool. Results suggest that the approach is able to predict dust emission with sufficient accuracy and can be used for further implementation in the management of operations and decision making in order to reduce the environmental impact of the process. Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE)–, Duplicate Sampling Analysis (DSA) and Segregation Free Analysis (SFA)–, are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody was calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to the power of 3. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for is shown to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry-preferred 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold-bearing ores the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the FSE greatly simplifies the characterization of gold ores, now requiring only the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications of the simplified equation for the heterogeneity test are that, provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.

(Wits) (Fellow) This paper concerns the development and application of a high-throughput, multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.
