In Canada’s metal mines, ventilation, which requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating, accounts for a significant portion of the overall mine’s underground power consumption. Mine ventilation systems are usually designed near the end of the mine design process and often designed for the ‘worst-case-scenario’ with respect to ventilation demand. In Canada’s metal mines this is commonly dictated by either diesel equipment usage or heat management considerations. Once designed, mine ventilation systems tend to operate at this peak level throughout the operating life of the mine. This is despite there being significant periods when this quantity is not required this is done mainly due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. Consequently, such systems are inefficient and wasteful and this must be changed if mining operations are to remain competitive while meeting increasingly more stringent regulations of underground environmental conditions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. The tools used for this include several disparate types of software. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine using orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete event simulation to predict production and evaluate various operating scenarios. It seems that again ventilation design is not being integrated into this process. Although, several modelling packages exist for ventilation design, little work has been done on integrating ventilation modelling into the overall life cycle plan of the mine. This paper will present a discussion of the work where the authors are attempting to integrate discrete event simulation for mine planning with ventilation modelling to predict the ventilation requirements for the operating life of the mine.

The paper deals with the importance of design, and of codes of practice, in ensuring safe working conditions in mines. The design principles involved in the design process are dealt with, and the importance of a logical design process is emphasized. The links between the requirements for developing a code of practice, embodied in the existing guidelines for the preparation of such a code, and the design principles and process are considered in some detail. Finally, suggestions are included which may provide improvements to the code and hence, ultimately, lead to further improvement in safe working conditions.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.

Most processing plants use automatic samplers to extract ore aliquots along a producing shift. These aliquots are combined into a sample normally sent to lab analysis. The sampler used in the extraction of an aliquot from a continuous flow of ore, i.e. a belt conveyor is required to be both precise and accurate. Surprisingly, not all commercial automatic samplers exhibit these two mandatory properties. Consequently, it is recommended the development of a procedure able to check sample assays reproducibility obtained using a given sampling protocol. This paper uses the Gy’s sampling theory to evaluate coal quality control practices at a washing plant using an automatic sampler extracting coal increments from the ROM feeding belt conveyor. Gy’s theory provides the means to establish the precision limits for a given sampling protocol. Various ore properties are required to be determined in combination with sample mass and mass of the lot sampled. All this information leads to the definition of the precision limit. The precision limit obtained was checked via an experiment mimicking what happens in situations where both miner and consumer use the same and appropriate sampling practices. The experiment demonstrates that sampling theory precision limits were valid if unbiased samplers are used by both parties, i.e. miner and consumer. Keywords: sampling, quality control, coal

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, and loading and hauling constitutes one of the major cost items on the mine. Because high productivity in loading and hauling results in large financial benefits, the following projects to improve productivity were implemented at Sishen: - a computerized truck-allocation system, - an overhead power-supply system for the dieselelectric driven rear-dump trucks, - an in-pit crusher and a belt-conveyor system. This paper concentrates on the truck-allocation system, with special reference to the improved productivity of loading and hauling resulting from the implementation of this system.

Sedimentary and igneous rocks are the two primary sources of phosphate that are mined and beneficiated to fertilizer. During the beneficiation process, phosphate is lost into the tailings. We investigated phosphate concentrations in tailings dumps at Minjingu mine, Tanzania using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to quantify the chemical compositions. The phosphate content in the tailings varied from 12.91% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) in Tailings 2 to 19.61% in Tailings Dump 1. The naturally occurring phosphate concentration in rocks ranges from 3% to 35%, and phosphate tailings from various locations with P2O5 concentrations as low as 6.46-12.65% have been beneficiated to commercial fertilizer. Our investigation revealed that phosphate concentrations in Minjingu tailings may be sufficient to be recovered for commercial applications. Suitable recovery methods are discussed, and we recommend that beneficiation should be performed to minimize the loss of phosphate into tailings. Further research is needed to identify the optimal beneficiation methodology.

Obviously all mining operations require much analytical work to be carried out. This starts with exploration, becomes more stringent with the evaluation of a mineralised area and finally becomes on-going when mining operations are under way. All these phases are carried out by geologists, metallurgists and mining engineers. They require analyses to carry out their functions but usually have no involvement in the analyses themselves. Analyses are carried out at commercial laboratories or in-house analytical laboratories. In the past in South Africa the tendency was for the larger mining houses to have their own centralised laboratories for exploration samples with each mine having it?s own laboratory to meet only that mine?s requirements. The centralised laboratory maintains QC functions at the subsidiary laboratories. In other mining areas of the world there has been a strong tendency for all geological analytical requirements, especially for exploration and mining, to be carried out at commercial analytical laboratories. In recent years there has been a tendency for mines in South Africa to move in the same direction. This paper discusses the factors that need to be taken into consideration when a new laboratory is being planned and automation is an option. The planning of the laboratory at the new Langer Heinrich Uranium mine in Namibia is discussed considering these factors. 2.0 REQUIREMENTS OF A MINING ANALYTICAL LABORATORY The purpose and requirements of a mining analytical laboratory are fairly obvious and can be summarised as follows :- 1. All mining operations must have access to analytical facilities, either in-house or commercial 2. The laboratory must be able to handle all the sample types submitted by the mining operation These can be mining, exploration and/or plant samples. They can comprise solids (rocks, bore-cores), slurries and/or liquids.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. The inter-relationship between these parties and the effect on the outcome of the project is often grossly underestimated. There are numerous success stories where the parties have worked as complementary teams aiming at the best outcome for the client company and achieving significant success. While there are a good number of occurrences where either the roles of the parties were unclear or perceived to be different from what others in the team believed or required them to be and the results were less than desired. This usually resulted in ongoing conflict, incorrect focus, working to different agendas and the result being a less than optimum result to Client Company. Mining, by its very nature of exploring where you cannot see, be it a shaft being sunk, tunnel being developed or other excavation that needs to be made, requires a very special working relationship between the parties. To understand this, and it applies equally well to mine and plant construction and other multiple function projects, one needs to start by describing the relationship of the parties. Often people believe that because they manage ongoing complex operations and large numbers of people that they can manage projects and as such the participants will ?fall into line.? At the outset it needs to be stressed that ?Project Management? is a specific type of management and needs to be understood as such. There are enough Colleges and Universities that teach project management, not only as a subject but also as a Master Degree. As you start up your project the relationship you establish between the client, project team (C.P.T) and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management team (EPCM) will largely determine how successful your project will be. It is essential that from the outset a spirit of co-operation, support and respect be nurtured, and that it be actively carried through the project life cycle. There are several methods to facilitate this including team building exercises right at the start. This time and money will be well spent and recouped many times over during the project life cycle.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

The stoping of platinum orebodies in the Bushveld has in the past been accomplished by using in-stope pillars to ensure stability of the workings. In the future, the use of continuous mining machines to mine the platinum orebodies is probable. It is not envisaged that such machines will cut in-stope pillars. This paper describes the alternative support systems that will replace the pillars and the stope geometries that will be required for this type of mining. The paper describes how the support resistance provided by in-stope pillars in current mining was determined and then evaluates support systems that can substitute for these pillars. Conceptual layouts based on existing breast mining layouts are presented. The layouts consist of panels of up to 100 m face length between rigid strike stabilizing pillars. A number of design charts are then proposed that allow for the design of appropriate support systems.

Reviewer: R. H. Eric This edition is organized in twenty-three chapters, and contains exactly 500 pages including three appendices and an index. The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

Statistics is essentially a study of variability, the use of some suitable mathematical model representative of such variability, and the application of this inferred pattern of behaviour to practical problems. Probability theory is the mathematical structure devised for providing models for chance happenings. Perhaps the simplest example of a chance happening is the result obtained in tossing a coin. Although the result of a single toss can never be predicted with certainty, there is no reason why in repeated tosses the expectancy of heads and tails should not be equal. In such a case the outcomes of the experiment are said to be equally likely, so that the probability of obtaining heads (or tails) is 1 in 2, that is, 0,5. This simple probability .model refers to a 'mathematical' or 'unbiased' coin. Whether such probabilities are meaningful for actual coins tossed in any particular way is a matter for experience to determine. Probability models have also provided the basis for representing observed variability in cases where the actual under- lying probabilities are only partly known or defy analysis. A typical example of the latter case is the variability observed in the values obtained from gold or other ore samples. The interacting natural forces which gave rise to this variability are obviously very complex and are unlikely ever to be unravelled completely. In spite of this, probability theory and the more recent geostatistical theories have provided us with models which can represent this variability on a reasonable basis. Applied statistics and geostatistics must therefore never be accepted as exact mathematical sciences. Furthermore, a basic and essential concept is that in the type of applications covered in these notes, no model must ever be accepted as necessarily the final and exact answer to the problem; thus, any model must prove and continue to prove its appropriateness in practice, preferably by follow-up comparisons.
