The Bureau of Mines is making a survey of petroleum products manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils . California crude petroleum is known to differ in some characteristics from the crude oil produced in other parts of the United States , and the claim has been made that the present Federal specifications are unduly severe when applied to the products made from California crudes . The main purpose of the present survey is to determine whether these claims are justified . This report deals only with California gasolines . Other products , such as burning oil , fuel and lubricating oils , will be taken up later . The samples reported were furnished in most cases , by the four large refining companies located on the Pacific Coast , although a number of samples of motor gasoline were purchased in the open market . In Los Angeles , samples of motor gasoline were obtained from service stations representing as many different refineries as possible . Inasmuch as San Francisco is one of the cities covered by the regular semi -annual motor gasoline survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines , it was not considered essential that the set of samples obtained from this city be as comprehensive as would otherwise have been necessary . The gasoline consumed in the States of Washington and Oregon is furnished for the most part by California refineries , and no effort was made to procure samples from these States .

This is the third of a series of reports on a survey of petroleum prod- ucts manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils. California crudes differ in many characteristics from the petroleum produced in the other parts of the United States, and the claim has been made that some of the present Federal Specifications for petroleum products tend to discriminate against Cali- fomia products. The purposes of the present survey are to determine what par- ticular specification requirements Califomia petroleum products characteristical ly fail to meet, how widely the products deviate from these requirements, and if possible to show whether the fault lies with the specifications or the products, or along what lines investigation to determine this question should proceed. The first report of the series gave the physical and chemical properties of the samples of gasoline and mineral spirits. A second report**, gave the physical and chemical properties of samples of lubricating oils. The present report deals entirely with burning and fuel oils. The refin ing companies have continued their very cordial and helpful cooperation. Seven samples of kerosene, four samples of Diesel fuel and eight samples of fuel oil were obtained. The methods of analysis used are those adopted by the Interdepartmental Petroleum Specifications Committee, published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper No. 323. The specifications used for corparison are those officially adopted by the Federal Specifications Board for the use of the various Depart- ments and Independent Establishments of the Government, effective February 3, 1923, and published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper No. 323, Part 1. Specific gravity, degrees A.P.I., viscosity and other special tests al- though not required by the specifications have been given for comparison. All temperatures are recorded in degrees Fahrenheit. Tables have been prepared giving data on physical and chemical propertios of the individual samples. Before each table the classification and specifica- tions for the particular class of oil considered in the table are given. Follow- ing each table, brief notes show wherein samples deviate from specification re- quirements.

This report describes a high-speed streak camera technique for measuring the lateral shock pressure generated by a cylindrical explosive charge detonated from one end. Experimental data show that the magnitude of the lateral pressure is approximately 50 percent that of the pressure generated from the terminal end of the charge for three explosives studied.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden and gob loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. This requirement has become more imperative as greater overburdens are encountered and when mining in stiff coal-bearing strata. Current design procedures rely on theories of coal pillar behavior that take into consideration a common hypothesis. This hypothesis states that the elastic core is surrounded by an inelastic yield zone. The distribution of stress at low-to-moderate pillar loads has been effectively defined by this hypothesis. However, it suffers greatly when applied to large width-to-height (w/h >lo) coal pillars under considerable overburden (>500 m) . In these situations, the hypothesis says the elastic core can achieve unrealistic stress states giving the pillars extremely high calculated strength. A growing body of field studies has shown this is not the case. It has become clear that same other mechanism must be involved. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the importance of an interface slip mechanism between the coal- bed and the surrounding strata in controlling the extent and pattern of stresses and deformations in a coal pillar.

"Methane, frequently called fire damp or marsh gas, is very well known to coal miners but to thy average gold miner it means nothing, as it is not associated generally with the rock formations in which gold is found.We have recently been conducting a study of mine air in typical gold mines on the Pacific Coast, and out of five California mines in which the air was sampled, three showed methane. Each of these three mines, referred to below as mines A, B, and C, have had accumulations great enough to be ignited. An authentic report from another California, gold mine, which has not yet been sampled, states that recently the superintendent was seriously burned by the ignition of a pocket of gas. This mine is later mentioned as mine D.Mine A is an old mine which had been abandoned for several years and permitted to fill with water. It has been unwaterad recently, and is now being developed at greater depths. During the unwatering, gas bubbles formed on the water and upon being ignited burned freely. It is reported that two men were seriously burned from accidentally igniting the gas. Samples of the bubbles on analysis showed high percentages of methane. Since the mine has been unwatered, no trouble has been experienced through gas being ignited. However, out of a total of six air samples which we took recently in scattered working places, all showed small amounts of methane, the methane content being 0.06, 0.04, 0.05, 0.04, 0.04 and 0.07 per cent, respectively. When these samples were taken methane was not suspected, but its general presence in the mine air indicates that it is being given off constantly."

"The Hog Creek mine, in lot 92 of the 17th district in Towns County, Georgia, was examined in 1890 by F. P. King, who reported the existence there of a 4-foot vein of corundum. The mine is about 2 miles west of Hiawassee, on the southern side of Ramey Mountain. Ed Burch, of Hog Creek, holds the surface rights, and the mineral rights appear to be vested in the heirs of William R. McConnell, who formerly owned and prospected the property.Examination by the Bureau of Mines showed the workings to be caved, but it was thought advisable to open the mine and uncover the reported vein. The Bureau's work consisted, of trenching and cleaning out the pits and shaft.William R. McConnell, the former owner, prospected the property in about 1890. At some tine during that operation, the prospect was visited by Francis P. Kings a geologist with the Georgia Geological Survey.3/King reported that a 4-foot vein of corundum was exposed g feet below the surface in the main cut and was opened for 20 feet along the strike. He also reported that the so-called ""Georgia rubies"" were taken from this mine.The main mine is about 2,000 feet- north of Hoc Creek on a timbered southern slope of Ramey Mountain. It lies at an altitude of about 2,100 feet, approximately 100 feet above the high-water level of the Catuga reservoir, which floods Hog Creek to a quarter of a mile above its confluence with the Hiawassee River. The nearest water is a small branch about 1,000 feet to the west.Chlorite schist is the principal host rock. It has been intruded by irregular masses of a very herd periodtite rock possibly troctolite. The schist near the surface is extremely weathered, presenting white and red laminations parallel to the schistosity. At a depth of 40 feet in the cross-cut it appears as a fine-grained green-chlorite schist. The schist strikes about N. 350 E. and dips 800 to the southeast.No corundum vein was found, and if any existed it must have been mined out after King's visit. In the pit, about 15 feet west of the shaft, approximately 150 pounds of zoisite and an occasiona1 small crystal of corundum were found imbedded in schist about 18 feet below the surface, near hard, dense troctolite."

A simple , quick, and relatively accurate device is needed for determining the presence of very small concentrations of organic halide gases in various atmospheres . Such a device would enable safety engineers , health officials , and others to discover quickly the presence of these gases in a suspected atmosphere and thus be able to apply protective measures promptly. This detector should prove useful in detecting leakage of halide gases from refrigerating and air - conditioning systems and in determining the presence of halide solvents in the atmosphere of dry - cleaning and degreasing establishments where organic halide solvents are used . Virtually all poison war gases are halide compounds . Because of the high toxicity of these gases , even in very low concentrations , a detector having the proper sensitivity should be useful in civilian defense for determining when atmospheres are relatively free of poison gases .

Electronegativities of the rare-earth elements were calculated from heats of formation. The values obtained from different compounds varied widely. The postulates of Pauling's electronegativity theory were interpreted for bonds that are primarily ionic; the study showed that many compounds obey rules of the form expected. Revised electronegativity values are given for the more electropositive elements, including the rare-earth metals (which are near magnesium in electronegativity). Estimates of un-known heats of formation are made from electronegativities and are compared with other estimates. INTRODUCTION Calculation of the electronegativities of the rare-earth elements is interesting to show how these metals stand relative to the other metals and to each other, and also possibly to systematize the thermochemical data on them.

A new prototype bag nozzle system has been designed under a Bureau of Mines contract to reduce dust generated during the bagging operation on fluidized air baggers. A field analysis of the new system has shown that the bag operator's dust exposure was reduced 83 pet. The amount of blowback was reduced 89 pet, which corresponds to a significant product savings. The new prototype system has been operating for a substantial period of time with no major problems.

This Bureau of Mines review focuses on the extent to which technologically and economically feasible programs in substitution, improved processing practices, including recycling, and design can achieve conservation of cobalt, chromium, manganese, and platinum-group metals, and thus reduce U.S. vulnerability to interruptions of supply. In addition, supply-side options--domestic and foreign resources, ocean minerals, and stockpiles--are identified. The report consolidates four major studies on these strategic and critical minerals sponsored entirely or partially by the Bureau in the last few years. These studies have been updated with further information from the recent literature.

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Ten years ago there was no general , country-wide service for the systematic training of miners in matters relating to safety . A beginning only had been made at a few scattered points . Under the old conditions each man was left largely to look out for himself in meeting the hazards of his day's work, and the foreman , shift bosses , and superintendents chiefly relied upon improvision when major accidents occurred . So long as the mines were small and the workers highly intelligent and well trained in routine mining methods , and when too , the pressure for output had not yet speeded up industry to the extent it has since those days , there was something to be said for this lais- sez faire attitude . When , however , the rapid expansion of industry lead to the introduction of new and little trained labor and to units of production of greatly increased size , the natural dangers of mining were greatly intensified . An accident in a small mine affects only a few; the same accident in a large mine , unless proper precautions have been taken , may cost the lives of many . The public does not generally recognize that the greatly increased outputs of the mines , of coal mines in particular , have been in recent years , obtained from substantially the same number of miners as ten years ago but with a personnel not nearly so well trained in mining . It is inevitable under : such conditions that more care must be devoted to avoiding accidents and much more elaborate preparations made for meeting them . In the years immediately preceding the establishment of the Bureau of Mines this speeding up of industry , change in the character of mine labor , and increasing hazard had all begun to be felt . Immediately prior to the organization of the Bureau of Mines , public attention had been drawn to a series of disastrous coal-mine explosions , to the increasing frequency of these disasters , and to the terrible loss of human life . resulting therefrom. One of the first problems , therefore ; confronting the Bureau was clearly that of finding methods of reducing the number of such disasters and lessening the severity of those that continued to occur . Toward this object were immediately directed the energies not only of the Bureau of Mines but also those of State mine inspectors , mine operators and various other agencies , all of whom were urged to cooperate in this great humanitarian work. The results of this work naturally cannot be measured by figures only . Work for increasing the health , safety , comfort , and happiness of human beings may not be gaged with mathematical precision . But certain features of this work as revealed by the record from year to year are of much interest . ”

Reduce the dust levels to which jacksetters and helpers on auger mining sections are exposed by identifying viable, effective methods for control-ling respirable dust on these sections. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted laboratory tests and respirable dust surveys to identify the factors that distinguish clean auger mining operations from dusty ones. Study Results Results of the Bureau's study revealed that ventilation is the most important element of auger mining dust control. The four must important venitilation parameters are airflow, curtain configuration, curtain setback, and curtain installation.

The work discussed in this report was done by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for determining trace amounts of fluorine in coal. Samples of coal mixed with calcium oxide as a fixative agent for fluorine were ashed at 600° C and the residue was fused with sodium carbonate. The melt was dissolved in phosphoric and sulfuric acids and distilled to separate the fluorine) which was determined in the distillate by a SPADNS-zirconium spectrophotometric method. Fluorine determinations of 83 commercial coals ranged from 0,001 to 0.019 percent.

SUMMARY The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactc rely demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No. 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia. The remote sealing consists of: (1) A sonar initial probing system which can operate satisfactorily even in the presence of dense smoke. The system is capable of determining both the local passageway geometry, identifying the presence of cribs and other obstructions, and the position of the borehole in the mine passage. (2) A mine sealing material system which utilizes fly ash for making the complete seal or as a bulk filler in conjunction with a urethane, froth foam, seal topping system. The choice of using fly ash alone or fly ash with foam topping depends on a number of factors, such as quality of seal desired, time available per seal, depth of borehole, passageway geometry, and water holding require¬ment. The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.

The pendant drop interfacial tensiometer is being used to study interfacial phenomena that influence the production of crude oil. A description of the instrument showing the modification of the cell and cell holder is presented. The modified cell and cell holder allow formation of a precise and reproducible drop size, and the image of the drop is easily alined and focused. Interfacial tension measurements and observations of film formation can be conducted at various temperatures with the jacketed cell.
