Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

The following are abstracts from papers presented at the 4th Symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries and· were produced through research funding under the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. Full articles appear in the proceedings published in July 1996 in Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. (Volume 11, Number 7). The two addresses included in the proceedings point to the progress, prospects, problems, and perspectives on control of respirable dust and dust-related disease in the mineral industries. The symposium papers deal with respirable dust issues that are longstanding such as characterization, health effects, control of airborne coal dust, new and emerging issues such as iron toxicity, diesel particulates, and sampling. The papers were grouped into the following topics: continuous dust monitoring, encompassing the development of a fixed-site monitor that will provide continuous information on instantaneous and time-weighted respirable dust concentrations; mechanisms involved in the generation of dusts in mine environments, important for dust control at the source; characterization and control of diesel emissions (particularly diesel particulates) in mine atmospheres; mining systems effects and models; dust control in mine working faces and in milling environments; characterization of the physical, chemical mineralogical, and biological properties of the dust and their relevance to health effects and sampling; dust-lung interactions, encompassing results from several biomedical studies dealing with acute and chronic inhalation of airborne dusts and associated lung responses; the role of iron in causing lung injury; and therapeutic strategies for ·the control of pulmonary disease. All papers submitted to the organizers were peer-reviewed. In the proceedings, we have not differentiated among the platform and poster papers; rather, they have been grouped into the above topical areas. Taken together, these papers reveal significant progress in the control of dust generation, characterization of dust, understanding of dust-lung interaction, and mining and milling practices to reduce dust exposure - all essential for reducing dust-related occupational hazards at the workplace.

Researchers working for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Center are developing ways to protect the health of miners. Part of that effort is improving the air quality in metal/nonmetal mines by developing proper ventilation techniques. The air quality of large opening nonmetal mines can be greatly improved by using engineering controls of contaminant prevention and proper ventilation techniques. Contaminant prevention includes methods to reduce contaminants from entering the mine air. Ventilation can be improved with appropriate fan selection and fan operation used in conjunction with air coursing using manmade and insitu rock stoppings.

A survey of roof and pillar conditions in underground limestone mines in the United States has revealed that bench mining of the floor between pillars can cause instability in the pillars at the perimeter of the benched area. Increased loading of these pillars was observed at several mines. Large inclined geological structures that are exposed in pillar ribs were observed to contribute to pillar instability. The paper describes a study that was carried out using numerical models to assess the effects of bench mining on pillar load and stability. It was found that the benched pillars shed load onto the surrounding pillars owing to their reduced stiffness. The pillars at the perimeter of the benching area will start shedding load as soon as benching increases the height of one side of the pillar. A case study is described which shows the effects of bench mining on limestone mine pillars.

The Bureau of Mines derived equations expressing the theoretical relationship between density of oil-shale rock and its organic content. Effects on theoretical shale density produced by variations in mineral composition and organic matter properties were evaluated. The theoretical relationship was extended to relate oil-shale density to oil yield in both oil weight and volume units by considering the fraction of organic matter converted to oil and the specific gravity of the oil produced. Corollary equations relating organic content by volume to organic content by weight and to oil yield were developed. The general relationships apply to an oil-shale deposit uniform in character. Application of the theoretical relationships to Green River Formation oil shales was demonstrated.

[The meaning of the term "bauxite' has always been somewhat vague and indefinite, and the term has been used in various applications to denote sometimes a rock, sometimes a mineral, but more frequently an ore. It seems logical to think of bauxite as an ore, however, because a very large part (probably at least 85 per cent) of the entire world's production of bauxite is at present being used as a source of aluminum and aluminum chemicals. In the United States there are two districts that, produce bauxite - the Arkansas district and the Alabama-Georgia-Tennessee-Mississippi district. The deposits in Mississippi have been discovered recently and are riot as yet productive but it seems reasonable to consider them as apart of the-district hat includes the deposits of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. The, two districts are often referred to as the Arkansas field and the Appalachian field. Of these two the Arkansas field has been by far the largest producer, and at present over 90 per cent of the bauxite production of they United States comes from the Arkansas field. The bauxite industry in the Appalachian field had its beginning in 1889, and since that time the total production of the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee has been, nearly a million tons. The production of bauxite in this field has languished in the last five, or six, years, and In 1927 its production was only about 14,000 tons, according to Harder4. The recent decrease in production is due mainly to the fact that many .of the known deposits of commercial-grade ore have become exhausted. There are, however, considerable quantities of low-grade bauxite in the Appalachian field, but these have not been available because there has been no satisfactory way of concentrating low-grade bauxite. The quantity, of low-grade material in the Appalachian field is probably, fully as large as the tonnage of commercial ore which the field has already produced.]

This chapter focuses on smoke as it relates to escape from underground mine fires. Among the topics discussed are the measurement of visibility in smoke; smoke-related hazards such as the production of CO, hydrochloric acid (HCI), or other byproducts of combustion; and miners' personal experiences while escaping through smoke. Smoke Measurement and Visibility In general, smoke consists of hundreds of thousands of very small particles. These particles have some "size," usually expressed in terms of their diameters, and they have some concentrations, usually expressed either in the number of these particles per unit volume or the total mass of the particles per unit volume. Humans cannot see individual smoke particles because they are too small. Similarly, "umber concentrations" and "mass concentrations" of smoke particles do not have much meaning to people unless they are trained technically. Still, individuals know that they can see smoke, independent of all the technical jargon used to describe it. Also, they know that when the smoke level gets too high, it is no longer visible. In fact, nothing is visible because the smoke absorbs all of the light in its surroundings. The eye is only sensitive to light in the wavelength region from about 400 nm to about 700 nm. The maximum sensitivity of the human eye is to light that has a wavelength of about 555 nm. It is important to know how the eye responds to light because if its response is known, it is possible to use a light detector that has almost the same response as the eye. Such a detector can then be used to quantify the visible characteristics of smoke because it responds in the same manner as the human eye. Smoke is visible because it either scatters or attenuates (diminishes) light. In some instances, smoke is visible because the smoke particles reflect light which is then detected by the eye. The eye actually "sees" an intensity of light that has been reflected from a cloud of smoke particles. Imagine shining a flashlight into a cloud of smoke. Someone off to the side can actually "see" the beam of light as it traverses the smoke cloud. This is called scattering. Smoke is also visible be¬cause it attenuates light. Imagine having someone shine a flashlight into your eyes. As smoke begins to build up along the beam of the flashlight, the light begins to dim. The smoke is visible because it is now reducing the intensity of light that falls upon the eye. As the smoke level increases, it is said to obscure our visibility. When the beam is no longer visible, the smoke obscuration is said to be 100%. In other words, none of the light energy from the flashlight makes its way through the cloud of smoke. Another way of saying that the obscuration is 100% is to say that the transmission of light through the cloud is zero.

Provide ear protection which allows normal, unaltered hearing at low noise levels, yet protects the wearer from excessive noise. The Approach: A commercial earmuff with integral speakers has been adapted with a special amplifier so that low sound levels are not affected, but higher noise levels automatically reduced. How It Works: The discriminating earmuff developed by the Bureau of Mines has two modes of operation. In the first mode, where input sound levels are less than or equal to 83 decibels, the wearer will perceive noise at its actual level. For inputs in excess of 83 decibels, the second mode of operation begins and the sound perceived by the wearer is progressively attenuated, or reduced, as the input level is increased. A recognizable difference still exists between two adjacent sound levels enabling the wearer to differentiate between them.

The perturbation of alternating electromagnetic fields by three-dimensional structures is considered. The general model is that of a semi-infinite conducting half -space which consists of regions of different conductivities. A numerical method is used to obtain the solution for the equations and boundary conditions. The effects on the fields at the surface of the half-space due to the conductivity discontinuities are shown by three-dimensional amplitude and phase plots.

Coal is found in the northeast comer of Georgia, in Dade, Chattooga, Walker, and Floyd Counties. Five seams, which underlie all of Lookout, Sand, and Pigeon Mountains, have produced most of the coal mined in the state. Representative analyses of Georgia coals show that they are typically low sulfur (less than one to one percent), low-to-medium volatile, bituminous deposits. Although there is no active mining in the state, reclamation continues on several permitted areas. In 1983 the State of Georgia relinquished primacy to the Office of Surface Mining. Since that time permits have been issued and mining completed. All the sites are presently in the process of bond release.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques to help identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk-analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and could provide the kind of information needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety to mitigate roof fall injuries.

Mining, traditionally a low-tech industry, is now utilizing surprisingly complex programmable electronic (PE) systems. The functional safety of PE-based mining systems is an international issue and concern. From 1995 to 2001, there were 11 PE-related mining incidents reported in the U.S. and 71 PE-related mining incidents reported in Australia. These incidents are due, in part, to unprecedented levels of system complexity. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is addressing this issue of system complexity by conducting research to develop a quantitative complexity assessment methodology based on Normal Accident Theory (NAT). The methodology models the behavioral interactive complexity at the level of system requirements. A graph-theoretical approach is used for creating quantitative metrics from Software Cost Reduction (SCR) dependency graphs. This complexity assessment methodology will help realize simpler, safer systems that will be easier to validate and verify. The methodology will benefit mining and other industries as well.

Network analysis of mine ventilation systems is not new, having been traced back to 1854. A Committee Report (1970) has also reported the extensive work done in this respect in the United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, United States, and other countries. Wang, et al (1970) developed a computer program which is an improvement over the earlier one developed by Wang et al (1967). The program has been recently modified and extended to include methane emission features by Owili-Eger (1973). This computer program incorporates all the novel features of the earlier programs. These include the capabilities of mesh selection, free splitting, internal or external fans, natural ventilation pressure and fixed quantity branches. The program is written in Fortran IV and, in effect, is an experimental mine in which many ideas can be tried out. The computer produces, besides the input data and certain computational data, the quantities and head losses in the branches, the head losses to be adjusted in the fixed quantity branches and the fan operating point. The last named program, hereafter to be referred to as the PSU/MVS, is presented in Appendix I. The application of this program is demonstrated in this manual through a series of selected examples. Application of the methane generator program is not included here as a detailed report on the subject is available elsewhere (Ramani et al, 1975).

Recently, a collection of programs that will simulate a ventila¬tion system with extensive analyses and report-generating capabilities and error diagnostics has been developed (Didyk, 1974). It has pro¬visions to handle air injections, methane or gas emissions, and leakage. Additionally, it will solve problems where fixed and/or maximum air quantities are specified for some airways. Finally, the simulator has been structured to be extremely modular so that additions and revisions to the model can be easily made. The general aspects of the information flow and logical structure of the mine ventilation simulator are shown in Figure 14. The output from the methane emission model is input into the ventilation simulator for calculation of the concentrations in all branches of the network. The methane model and the ventilation simulator provide powerful tools for the analysis and planning of mine ventilation systems. INPUT DATA REQUIREMENTS In all of the mathematical models, several coefficients that de¬fine the characteristics of the ventilation system are used. For the ventilation simulator, these include the frictional characteristics of the ventilation regulatory devices. Considerable work has been done on the experimental determination of these coefficients for smooth pipes and well-defined mediums, but only limited data are available for actual mining conditions. "Solution of most engineering problems requires, in addition to vast ·numerical calculations, substantial use of practical judgement and expertise. With advances in applied mathematics and computer technology, the numerical aspects of problem solution have reached a considerable level of maturity; However; it is only .recently that approaches like the expert systems methodology have been developed to ·incorporate the Judgemental aspects as well. For rapid development and prototying of expert systems, expert system building tools or ""shells"" have become widely available. For the expert system developer, identification of the key characteristics of the problem domain and selection of the right expert system tool are of crucial importance. In this paper, the important attributes required in an expert system shell for use in the development or a mine ventilation planning expert system are discussed. These attributes are general in that most engineering problems in mining would have these requirements. Also, the results of an exercise undertaken to evaluate commercially available shells for application to mining engineering problems are presented.INRODUCTIONExpert systems (ES) are interactive computer programs which use high quality specialized knowledge in some narrow problem domain to solve complex problems in that domain. These complex problems lack structured and/or standard ways of solution and involve substantial use of subjective and experience based knowledge. One of the first expert systems was MYCIN, developed in 1974, in which subjective and heuristic knowledge of expert physicians was used to diagnose infectious diseases and provide antimicrobial therapy (Buchanan arid Shortliffe, 1984). Since MYCIN, expert systems applications have appeared in other areas such as mineral prospecting (Gaschnig, 1982), configuration of computers (McDermott, 1982) and structural engineering (Bennett and Englemore, 1979)."

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. This information circular presents data for 1960 on individual coke plants in the United States. All oven-coke plants in existence, whether active or idle at the close of the year, are listed in this report. With two exceptions, only beehive plants on which reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines are included. Although the Bureau was unable to obtain reports from these two active plants in 1960, the number of ovens and annual coke capacity are estimates, based on previous reports filed with the Bureau of Mines. Accordingly, there were 73 oven-coke plants in existence at the end of 1960 of which 70 were active. Reports were received on 44 beehive plants of which only 13 were in operation at year end. Oven-coke plants are listed alphabetically by States in table 1 which shows the name and address of the company, location of plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and coal-chemical materials produced. The terms "furnace" and "merchant" plants used in this and all other reports of the Bureau of Mines designate the type of ownership. Furnace plants are those owned by iron and steel companies whose main business is production of coke for use in their own blast furnaces. Merchant plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce for sale on the open market metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials. The annual coke capacity shown for each plant in this table is based on the minimum coking time necessary to produce coke with qualities suitable for its intended use. Therefore, the annual capacity of a plant may change from year to year, depending on age and condition of ovens, the character and quality of coal carbonized, the grade of coke required, and other factors. For example, annual coke capacity of a coke plant primarily making foundry coke with longer coking cycles would be lower than one making blast-furnace coke. Also some ovens must be operated at slightly lower than normal flue temperature because of the condition of the refractories and maximum capacity would be somewhat lower than designed capacity. For this reason, the capacity reported to the Bureau of Mines may differ from the designed or rated capacity estimated by the coke-oven builders at the time of construction. For example, if the generally accepted standard coking rate of one inch per hour were used on all ovens to calculate total annual capacity, it would have been 80.4 million tons or 2 percent higher than the capacity reported to the Bureau. Because of the factors mentioned above, the annual coke capacity shown in this table is believed to be a reliable measure of the practical operating capacity of the industry.

Provide low-cost fire protection for big bulldozers. Approach A fire protection system, previously used on mobile logging equipment and adapted to surface coal augers, has now been adapted for use on large mining bulldozers. How It Works Heat sensors mounted in the engine compartment and hydraulic hose areas detect the fire, usually before the operator does. This causes the system to automatically discharge A-B-C class dry chemical extinguisher through a fixed piping system. The system can also be manually activated from either the opera-tor's cab or ground level. Location of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing The heat sensors of the sys-tem consist of bimetallic strip switches which operate at about 10000F temperature. Switch operation results in release of compressed gas from a small storage cylinder. The gas expands to blow the dry chemicals out of the nozzles, in a spray that lasts about 15 seconds. The compressed gas used is usually nitrogen, although carbon dioxide is also used.
