Reduce the noise levels to which operators of double-drum longwall shearers are exposed without compromising the operational effectiveness of the shearer. The Problem Noise produced by double-drum longwall shearers can be harmful to machine operators. Typical noise levels at the lead-drum operator position range from 100 to 105 dBA, and Federal noise regulations allow only one to two hours of exposure per shift at these levels. Noise radiated by the shearer cutting drum is the primary contributor to the overall noise level. However, test of a noise-controlled cutting drum developed by the Bureau of Mines reduced the operator noise level to 95 dBA, thereby increasing the allowable operating time to four hours per shift. Approach The key design aspect of the noise-controlled shearer drum is its reduced vibration-al response to coal-cutting forces. Laboratory studies have shown that these forces are concentrated in the low-frequency region (500 Hz and below). Ecuador had limited mineral output, al-though the Government attempted to stimulate metallic mineral exploration and also evaluated a gypsum and a phosphate deposit. A pilot plant to exploit gold deposits was established, and there was extensive gold exploration activity in southern Ecuador. Domestic output of iron and steel declined sharply. Among all minerals, petroleum output was the dominant factor with both exports and production increasing significantly over that of 1988. Crude oil exports contributed 63% of total export earnings and about 70% of the central Government's revenue.

A brief description is given of various Bureau of Mines research activities that have begun since July 1974 and are not being reported on by others at the Third West Virginia University (WVU) Conference on Coal Mine Electrotechnology. An essential feature of the various projects is that they are pragmatic. The projects are applied research and are carried out both by the Bureau in-house research group and by other research groups through contract research. Projects have been directed toward wired-type communications with a special effort to modify the wired systems so as to be more effectively used. The projects are in three groups: Pager phone systems, trolley line phone systems, and guided-wire wireless communications. Also, a brief sketch is given of research that is essential for further developments in mine communications. From the early results of these various projects, the Bureau has good reason to project that there will be improved performance of existing communication systems and that communications will be extended to other individuals working in areas that are excluded from present mine communication systems.

Develop improved blasting practices that can help to curb overbreak in highwalls at surface mines, thereby reducing the hazards of rock-falls to workers and equipment, The Problem The serious hazard in surface mining is the falling of rock from highwalls. Poor highwall stability is caused in part by geologic conditions, but often is aggravated by faulty blasting practices, where the explosive energy not only fractures the rock to be excavated, but also damages the rock that borders the excavation. This reduces the general stability of the hlghwall and increases the rockfall potential. The probability of injury to mine workers or damage to equipment associated with exposure to the highwall increases with the height of the highwall and the extent of its overbreakage. Most rockfalls occur in the first 15 days after a new highwall is exposed. This statistic is significant since most of the work below a highwall is done during this period. The area of greatest hazard is within 25 ft of the toe for rocks that fall vertically, and up to 90 ft from the toe for falling rocks that are deflected by the highwall during their descent, The workers most frequently involved in such accidents are dozer operators, ground laborers, and shovel operators or oilers.

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

The location of trapped miners from their seismic signals will be in- accurate if we assume the P-wave propagation velocity is a constant. P- wave velocities are anything but constant in regions about mines, so some calibration is necessary to obtain more accurate seismic locations. The reference event method compares the time arrivals of signals generated by the miners with those previously recorded from a reference or calibration event in the vicinity of the miners. This method locates the miners' position relative to the calibration source. Hence, the location of the miners is absolute if the reference event position is known absolutely, usually from surveys and mine maps. Advantages resulting from the system, besides greater accuracy, are locations independent of the velocity model assumed, the same solution from the full array and from any subset of four or more seismometers in the array (three if the miners' depth is known), fewer seismometers required, and no complex computers required for analysis. VELA Uniform experience shows that the accuracy of locations of teleseismic explosions and earthquakes is improved by an order of magnitude over locations computed from average travel time curves. Each calibration event is applicable only over a limited range. We recommend a field test of the method at a mine to measure its location accuracy, the range of effectiveness for each calibration event, the number of seismometers needed, and the number of reference events required per mine. From these experiments we could decide whether the reference event method was useful and, if so, what form a practical rescue system would take.

The order of identification and in same cases the magnitude of the elastic constants of an anisotropic material depends on the orientation of the cartesian coordinate axes with respect to a set of reference coordinate axes within the material; thus confusion will result unless standard orientations are used. In this paper the relationship between the cause (the internal fabric) and the effect (the elastic properties in this case) is discussed for single crystals and for polycrystalline and amorphous materials. While reference axes based on the cause are used in the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers) standard for piezoelectric crystals) it is shown that a reference coordinate system that would be suitable and practical for all anisotropic polycrystalline and amorphous materials must be based directly on a three-dimensional expression of the effect. The conventions offered are similar to the IRE standards for piezoelectric crystals) but use the elastic coordinates of the wave surface which can be quite readily established experimentally as the reference coordinates.

Develop personal computer (PC) based software for analyzing and/or filtering time- and frequency-domain attributes of seismic and electromagnetic signals from geophysical surveys for the enhanced interpretation of rock masses and subsurface geologic structure. The Problem Both mining and petroleum geophysicists utilize seismic signals to characterize rock masses for delineating subsurface stratigraphy and structural conditions. However, a vast amount of information available in seismic project evaluation data often is unavailable for interpretation unless these data are enhanced. New processing technology increases the quality of these signals for analysis and interpretation. Comprehensive signal processing software is mostly written for petroleum exploration companies. Commercially available signal processing programs are often limited to a single application or are restricted for use with specific hardware, e.g., a digital oscilloscope or a mainframe computer. The programs may use computer codes that are proprietary, restrict user modification to expand capabilities, or may be hard to interface. They may have insufficient documentation for easy use and be support dependent.

"Introduction In the course of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines into the various causes of coal-mine explosions, the fact that several gas explosions had occurred during or very soon after a mine was being un-watered, attracted the attention of the Bureau's engineers. The apparent coincidence was so marked that there appears to be an extra hazard present, whenever water, which has been standing against the face of the coal for some time, is suddenly removed either by natural drainage or by mechanical means.Actual Occurrences Case 1. - A typical illustration of this hazard is shown in a gas explosion which occurred in a mine in Central Pennsylvania. Four main entries, 50 feet apart with an average grade of 6 per cent, had been driven with the dip of the coal, and from these mains 7 pairs of entries, at intervals of 800 feet, had been turned at such an angle that their grade was slightly rising. Prom these latter pairs of entries, rooms were turned practically at right angles.The main entries had been driven for 4,500 feet and at the face there was 400 feet of cover. As far as could be observed, the roof was of sandstone and the floor of clay.The coal bed being mined was the Lower Kittanning, which has a thickness of about 4 feet. New Continuous Personal Dust Monitors (CPDM) submitted to NIOSH for approval to sample coal mine dust must accurately measure respirable coal mine dust in mine environments. There are two steps in the process which may be done in any order. The manufacturer is required to submit the results of a comparative underground coal mine dust sampling study, where the candidate CPDM is compared to an approved coal mine dust sampling device (currently the Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampling Unit (CMDPSU)). This testing shall follow the guidelines outlined below and shall demonstrate through weighted regression analysis that the mean coefficient of variation with bias correction is equal to or less than 12.8%. The other step involves laboratory testing to determine the electronic and environmental stability. This testing must be conducted by a private, commercial, academic or other laboratory approved by NIOSH.

"Everyone admits that there are more accidents in metal mines than there should be but there is much difference of opinion as to the causes of accidents, whether avoidable or unavoidable, and the amount of responsibility attaching to the miner and the mine operator, respectively. However, it seems that one of the main reasons why there are so many accidents, is that there is so little general knowledge regarding their causes and costs. Some information regarding the costs and causes of metal-mine accidents is presented in this paper.The data contained were obtained from a study of the complete accident and medical reports of two large metal-mining companies, which carry their own insurance. Path maintain hospitals with competent medical attendants. One of these companies also maintains a very efficient safety bureau, consisting of a safety engineer, with two assistants who work in connection with the medical department, and with the safety committee made up from among the miners themselves.Daring the year of 1920, ""A"" Company employed approximately 900 men, and these men worked more than 270,000 shifts. There were 373 minor and major injuries, among these 900 men, hence assuming that each injured man was hurt cut once, 41 per cent of the men who worked in this mine received some kind of time-losing injury during the year. On account of these injuries the injured men lost 3731 shifts, and thus the time lost due to injuries amounted to approximately 1.4 per cent of the total number of shifts worked,"

This report describes three coal mine ventilation studies by the Bureau of Mines in which sulfur hexafluoride (SFG) was used as a tracer gas. One of these studies was conducted to determine air movement and leakage in a sealed area. Another was run to determine the ventilation efficiency of a bleeder system. Finally, a study was made of air leakage across permanent stoppings of parallel intake airways. These studies proved sulfur hexafluoride to be a useful addition to the equipment commonly used in coal mine ventilation analysis.

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes our recent investigations of the potential role of silicon-oxygen based free radical species in the biochemical mechanism of the lung injury caused by the inhalation of freshly fractured silica. The impetus for this study came from the following observations. Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of acute and chronic silicosis. Chronic silicosis is characterized by the development of sharply marked concentric fibrotic nodules in the lung. This occurs over a period of several decades with the development of progressive respiratory impairment. In contrast, acute silicosis is manifested by the filling of the alveoli with an amorphous lipoproteinaceous exudate within a short period after exposure, and rapid development of respiratory disability often leading to fatality. Most studies on the pathogenesis of silicosis have focused on the elucidation of cellular mechanisms of cell injury and the development of chronic silicosis. Because pulmonary responses to crystalline silica are distinctly different for · the acute and chronic silicosis, we hypothesized that the acute response is associated with some unique properties of ·freshly formed silica particle surfaces, due to the formation of some reactive chemical species caused by the rupturing or the silicon-oxygen bonds. In occupations involving drilling, tunneling and sandblasting operations acute silicosis can be correlated with this unique surface reactivity of silica. The formation or reactive species was demonstrated, using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy (Dalal et al., 1986; Fuibini et al., 1987; Hochstrasser and Antononi, 1972). Grinding of quartz crystals under ultra high vacuum (10-10 torr) leads to the formation of Si- and SiO• radicals and these radicals are quenched by exposure to air and other gases (Hochstrasser and Antonini, 1972). ESR signals have also been reported from micronized quartz samples that were evacuated at 413 K (Bolls et al., 1983). In order to find a more direct relationship of such radicals to acute silicosis, we made ESR measurements on quartz dusts freshly ground in ambient air and found- that indeed grinding under ambient environment leads to the formation of the Si• and SiO• type of radicals which decay on storing the dusts in air or in biological buffers (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988). The Si• and SiO radical formation on grinding has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, we recently found that •OH radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz (Dalai et al., 1988; Shi et al., 1988; Vallyathan et al., 1988). We have subsequently carried out detailed cytotoxicity and biological assays on freshly made as well as aged quartz dusts. As summarized below, the results provide new insight into the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis."

Sphalerite crystals occur sparingly in minor faults and pockets in a coarsely crystalline dolomite on the Brown-Tipton farm near Greenville in Greene County, Tenn. After several visits by U. S. Bureau of Mines engineers and U.S. Geological Survey geologists, a survey was r: the in the fall of 1944. Upon their recommendations, trenches on the Brown farm under Bureau of Mines supervision. In each case, the bed most favorable for zinc deposition was exposed. In the finished trench bottoms no zinc minerals are visible.

The mine and surface plant are situated in the west half of sec . 7 , T. 23 S. , R. 18 W. , about 3 miles by road southwest of the center of Lordsburg , near the old abandoned townsite of Valedon ( see fig . 1 ) . The main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Lordsburg , as does the paved eastwest U. S. Highway 70-80 . A spur line of the Southern Pacific ends near the mine . A good graded road connects the mine with Lordsburg . Eliminate accidental tramming of a cleanup tractor. Approach A switch was installed in the operator's seat cushion to pre-vent the cleanup tractor from tramming without an operator in the driver's seat. How It Works The operator must be seated, and the Forward/Reverse Switch (that controls tramming direction) must pass through the NEUTRAL position before the vehicle will tram. See Figure 1. A pressure-sensitive seat cushion switch, a solid-state relay, and a double-contact relay were added to the control circuitry of an S & S BMUAT -88 cleanup tractor to create this tramming interlock. The weight of the operator on the cushion closes the seat cushion switch (Figure 2, A). This activates the solid-state relay (B), which completes the initial circuitry. Moving the For- ward/Reverse Switch (C) to NEUTRAL energizes the coil in the double-contact relay (D) and closes both contacts. One contact completes a sustaining circuit which keeps the double-contact relay energized. The second contact transfers power to the remaining contacts within the Forward/ Reverse Switch. These circuits are shown in greater de- tail in Figure 2.

The Bureau of Mines developed a test for evaluating gas masks designed to protect against phosphine gas; phosphonium iodide is used as a source of phosphine. Gas masks approved by the Bureau for respiratory protection against phosphine include the GMC-SS-1, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; the LG-10 and LG-10G, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

The Sutherland copper prospect is situated in Floyd County, Va. The immediate area was prospected around 1850, and one of the adits possibly dates from that time. Little or no ore has been mined from the deposit. The deposit is a mineralized sulfide zone occurring in mica schist and consisting mostly of pyrrhotite with minor amount of copper. A magnetometer survey of the deposit by the American Metal Co. in 1939 showed an anomaly that was thought to indicate a zone: of secondary enrichment. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled 14 holes, totaling 913 feet, and opened an adit during February and March 1943. No appreciable copper values or indications of secondary enrichment were found.
