Heat content studies were conducted on burned shale, spent shale, and three grades of raw oil shale from the Green River Formation. Corrections were made for product enthalpies. The results were compared with previous work, indicating good agreement below retorting temperatures, but some differences at retorting temperatures. A general equation was developed relating heat content to oil-shale grade and temperature.

In this Bureau of Mines report, a previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow in ventilated duct fires is applied to mine-related ventilation systems that utilize an exhaust fan to supply the forced airflows. The coupling between a fire and the ventilation airflow in a single-entry duct is analyzed to relate the air velocity in the absence of a fire to air velocity during a fire. By combining the derived coupling equations with the results of the previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow, it is possible to calculate critical flow velocities required to prevent reverse stratified flow in the event of a duct fire. The sample calculations shown agree with the few experimental results available from small-scale tunnel fires.

How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

"INTRODUCTION Industry, including coal mining, has come to realize that to prevent accidents the human element must be given more consideration than was customary in the past. In formulating safety rules and regulations and in the enactment of laws governing mining, too often enforcement is emphasized rather than the means of gaining willing compliance.' The purpose of this paper is to call attention to the human side of accident prevention, and the approach to this important and much-discussed subject will deviate somewhat from the usual discussions.The human being is a complex mechanism, both physically and mentally. It is difficult to establish a common denominator for the actions of humans, except in general. In establishing mining laws, rules, regulations, and standards, the ultimate objective should be to gain the best possible response of workmen, so that optimum results in accident prevention may be obtained. The complexity of human beings is apparent when the many ways 1n which they differ are considered. Some of these differences are manifested in emotional and phlegmatic types, degrees of intellect or native intelligence; and in hopes, desires, aspirations, and philosophies of life. How much simpler ac¬cident prevention would be if the response to laws, rules, regulations, or standards were equivalent to the definite movements of puppets responding to pulls on strings. Each time, the strings are pulled in exactly the same way, the puppets will respond in exactly the same manner. Human beings, although having many similar characteristics, do not respond uniformly to identical ""string-pulling""; therefore, much study is necessary before the desired re¬sponses can be obtained. To achieve the ultimate in accident prevention, it must be ""worked at"" constantly. Regardless of the adequacy of safety laws, rules, regulations, or standards, good accident records will not ""roll in"" if dude consideration is not given to the personal traits of those most likely to be involved in accidents."

Regular monitoring for methane gas is required near working faces in gassy underground mines where the potential for methane ignitions is greatest. However, high concentrations of methane can also accumulate outby the face where methane levels are monitored less frequently. Wearing a personal methane monitor equipped with an alarm could protect persons working in these outby areas from injury or death due to methane ignitions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted studies to evaluate methanometers that could be used as person-wearable monitors. For the present study, seven different person-wearable monitors that are not currently approved for underground use were evaluated. This paper describes test procedures used to evaluate performance of methane monitors that could be used underground for continuous personal monitoring of methane. The information in this report provides data that allows the reader to make side-by side comparisons of these instruments.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tin, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal.

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: • Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These “lith-graphs” are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. • Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. • Weekly “Quality” meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.

To provide technology for achieving more efficient water filtration systems for the mineral industry, the Bureau of Mines performed demon-stration filtration tests at three iron ore mines and one steel mill. A comparison of equivalently sized magnesium oxide (MgO) and sand filters showed that MgO had a higher capacity and could operate at higher fil-tration rates than sand. In demonstration tests when alum (AlK(S04)2) was the coagulant, suspended solids breakthrough occurred even though the pressure across the filter (head loss) was 7 psig or less. Under these circumstances, the MgO demonstrated 20 to 100 pct greater filtra-tion capacity, defined in terms of the volume of water filtered before breakthrough. When an organic floccu1ant was used at one location, head loss was the run-limiting factor; the filters essentially plugged with-out any solids breakthrough.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that occupational exposures to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica* be controlled by complying with the provisions presented in this document. These recommendations are designed to protect the health and provide for the safety of workers exposed to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica for up to 10 hr/day during a 40-hr workweek over a working lifetime. The information presented in this document demonstrates that underground and surface coal miners are at risk of developing simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), silicosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Adherence to the recommendations in this document should prevent or greatly reduce the risk of adverse health effects in workers exposed to respirable coal mine dust and respirable crystalline silica. NIOSH recommends that preventive efforts be focused primarily on reducing worker exposures. Effective health and hazard surveillance and medical screening are also useful components of a comprehensive prevention effort.

Approach Grout roof bolts with a storable mixture of ultra-fast setting inorganic cement and water. How It Works A loose mixture of dry cement powder, and pinhead-size water droplets encased in waxy globules, are pack-aged in sausage shaped cartridges for storage and use. After the cartridge is inserted Into a drilled hole, the roof bolt is thrust In and rotated to mix the cement and water. The cement hardens in seconds, providing usuable anchoring strengths in minutes. Prior to filling of the sausage shaped cartridges, the microcapsules of water are Intimately mixed with the dry cement. The currently used grouting consists of a mixture of one part water (minimum) with three parts alpha-type gypsum cement and a minor amount of accelerator.

In connection with its continuing studies of the characteristics of alloys and alloying elements, the Bureau of Mines investigated the crystal structure of fused boron. This report describes how the structure of fused boron was found to be rhombohedral by the powder method for crystal-structure determinations by X-ray diffraction. The determinations of the crystal structure of boron reported in the literature were made on crystals prepared by various methods such as electrolysis, thermal decomposition of a boride, or by hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide. Table 1 summarizes the data found in the literature on the crystal structure of boron. The information shows the following: (1) Three structures have been reported for boron, (2) boron prepared by different processes--or even by varied conditions of a process--produces crystals of different structure, and (3) no information is given on the crystal structure of fused boron.

"INTRODUCTION During September 1944, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of investigation and limited exploratory drilling at the Last Chance mine, near the village of Arthur in Grant County, Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program.The Bureau's attention was directed, to the Last Chance mine when the operators discovered high percentages of zinc in an exploratory churn drill hole a short distance southeast of the mine. The ore was found in the Trenton Limestone, which underlies the ore horizon then being mined. To determine whether this discovery was important, and to demonstrate the possible extension of the ore the Bureau of Mines drilled five additional holes in the vicinity of the discovery.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines carbonized 21 coal samples from Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties, Pa., at 900° C, using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of the coke. These samples represented high-volatile A Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport and medium-volatile Upper Freeport and Lower Kittanning coals. About 20 percent of all coals presently carbonized in commercial coke ovens in the United States are mined in Greene and Washington Counties, principally from the Pittsburgh seam. Sulfur content of the Pittsburgh coals in these counties is moderately high (1.0 to 3.2 percent) but, because of extremely large reserves, accessibility to eastern United States markets and excellent blending characteristics to yield strong coke, these counties will continue to be an important source of metallurgical coals in the future. Most coals from the other seams contained more than 2 percent sulfur, which would limit their use as metallurgical coals.

Since 1910, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has investigated practical ways of dealing with the consequences of major fires and explosions in underground mines. The results of this research have had a significant positive impact on the mining community by enhancing mine workers’ chances of surviving an underground mine disaster. Today, the Bureau continues to conduct research in mine disaster mitigation. Much of this work has direct application to search and rescue situations, such as: emergency evacuation through smoke-filled or otherwise unbreathable atmospheres, locating and rescuing survivors from rubble piles, and fire fighting in confined spaces. Three USBM research areas are discussed: (1) Life Support -- This effort is directed toward research into and development of closed-circuit breathing apparatus for use in hazardous environments which are likely to be encountered in the aftermath of a mine disaster. (2) Trapped Miner Location -- A mine disaster may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal escape routes are cut-off. This research activity resulted in the development of transportable seismic technology that can be used to locate trapped miners. (3) Mine Fire Diagnostics -- This research involves developing practical techniques for remotely monitoring how the atmosphere inside a mine changes during a fire, in order to estimate the spread and severity of an underground fire. This information is critical in deciding how best to fight a mine fire, or whether it is safe to mount a rescue and recovery mission.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. Laboratory batch and small-scale continuous flotation tests were con-ducted by the Bureau of Mines on a mica waste tailing from Kings Mountain, N.C., to determine the feasibility of producing high-quality mica, feldspar, and glass sand. Mica was recovered by two methods; one was by flotation in an alkaline circuit, which produced a mica concentrate assaying 92.0 percent mica with a recovery of 87.l percent, and the other by flotation in an acid circuit, which produced a mica concentrate assaying 91.0 percent mica with a recovery of 79.4 percent. Continuous flotation processing yielded a feldspar concentrate assaying 1.10 percent Na20 and 13.50 percent K20, with recoveries of 66.4 and 80.6 percent, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality quartz glass sand analyzing 98.6 percent Si02 and 0.02 percent Fe203.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to observe the effect of cetane improvers upon nitrogen oxides concentration in diesel exhaust gas. Amyl nitrite and amyl nitrate were used as additives to the fuel used in a four-cycle, single cylinder type test engine. It was concluded that nitrogen oxide concentrations were not enhanced at fuel-air ratios above 0.03 pound of fuel per pound of air.

In the No. 3 Sunnyside mine of the Utah Fuel Co. a disastrous fire started on the afternoon of August 17 , 1920 , the effects of which are still present in the mine . On account of the extent of the fire , the expense involved in reopening the mine and the opportunities afforded for determining the effects of depleted air , a description of it is worthy of record . This paper is a summary of a more complete report , prepared by the writers , which will be published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines .
