A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.

"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. Bauxite resources were primarily in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. Only five countries combined, Australia, Brazil, Guinea, India, and Jamaica, contained most of the total world reserves available for extraction under current economic conditions and accounted for nearly 80 % of world production of bauxite. World bauxite and alumina production declined and prices for smelter-grade alumina remained below the $200/mt level during 1993 because of growing aluminum inventories on international markets and declining worldwide demand. The United States imported bauxite primarily from Australia, Brazil, Guinea, and Jamaica. U.S. alumina plant capacity remained essentially unchanged throughout 1993, but apparent capacity utilization decreased by the close of 1993. Chromium Most of the world's known resources and reserves of chromite are located in India, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. India, Kazakhstan, and South Africa accounted for 73 % of world production of chromite. The two largest producers of chromite, Kazakhstan and South Africa, were in the process of major economic and political change during 1993. South Africa's production and exports of chromite continued to fall during 1993, because of weak international demand and a flood of cheap metal from the former U.S.S.R. and China into world markets. Despite a significant increase in production, South Africa's ferrochrome producers continued to operate below capacity in 1993. Prior o the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., Kazakhstan was a major internal supplier of chromite ore to the U.S.S.R. consumer, but subsequent decline in demand led to a downward trend of chromite production in Kazakhstan and increasing exports to Europe during 1992 and 1993. The United States consumed, about 10% of world chromite ore production in various forms of imported materials. The United States imported nearly one-half of its required chromium contained in chromite ore and chromium ferroalloys and metal from South Africa; the remainder was from the minor producers Turkey, Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe, and others.

Ear Mountain is an isolated mountain mass that rises abruptly from the coastal plain on the northwest shore of the Seward Peninsula. Geologically it resembles the more accessible Brooks Mountain and Cape Mountain areas to the southwest, being composed of a granitic core surrounded and partly capped by metamorphosed sediments. The occurrence of lode- and placer-tin deposits in this area has been known since the early 1900's, when the Seward Peninsula region was prospected extensively for both gold and tin. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the tin deposits in the Ear Mountain area during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons. The objectives were to delimit the areas in which tin minerals occur, as a guide to future prospecting, and to determine the amount of tin in the known prospects. Work by the Bureau of Mines included both placer and lode sampling.

Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane, WA, have collaborated with three Western longwall coal mines in an on going effort to develop technologies that will aid in providing safe and stable working areas. The goal of the research described here is to develop a stress monitoring system that will provide immediate information to mine managers for making daily safety decisions as areas of poor ground are mined through. Initial work has focused on answering preliminary questions regarding the reliability and use of stress change patterns. Research is concentrated on monitoring horizontal stress because horizontal stress is transmitted over long distances through stiff strata, thus allowing an extended length of entry to be monitored. This paper presents an explanation of the concept, key results from field tests at two mine sites, and a proposed process for implementing a monitoring system. System design layouts, instrument use, data collection and interpretation methods, and processes to present findings to mine staff are described. Additional validation and correlation with actual failure mechanisms are required before this approach can be recommended at ongoing operations. However, initial results indicate that this approach shows promise in mines prone to bumps and roof falls associated with large stress changes. In particular, analyses of measured changes in horizontal stresses appear useful.

To be authorized for use in coal mines, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed in schedule 1F,3/ on the basis of extensive practical and theoretical research by the Explosives Testing Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. An explosive or blasting device that passes these tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is constantly revised, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines periodically to publish the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. This circular covers all permissibles including additions, transfers, and changes made between December 31, 1945,4/ and December 31, 1951.

An evaluation is made of a lime-soda sinter process for extracting alumina from anorthosite. In this process, alumina is extracted by sintering anorthosite with soda ash and limestone, and then leaching the sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution. The sodium aluminate solution formed during leaching is separated from the residue and treated with lime in autoclaves to remove dissolved silica before alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The trihydrate is then calcined to a-alumina. Two options, dry grinding and wet grinding, are used in the sintering step. For plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day for the dry grinding and wet grinding options respectively, the estimated operating costs are $75.40 and $74.36 per ton of alumina when charging $2.50 per ton for anorthosite and $1.00 per ton for limestone. The fixed capital costs based on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index of 240.0 are $76 million and $70 million respectively. This process, when treating anorthosite, using either option, is not competitive under current economic conditions with the Bayer process treating bauxite to produce alumina.

ALTHOUGH the quantity of material handled at metal and nonmetal mines in the United States in 1962 was 2.7 billion tons, the same as in 1961, a larger proportion was waste. At metal mines, crude ore production declined 1 million tons and waste output rose more than 18 million tons; at nonmetal mines crude ore production declined 6 million tons and waste output rose 36 million tons. Copper and iron ore producers increased their share of crude ore and material handled from about three-fourths to four-fifths of the national metals total, and sand and gravel and stone producers in-creased their share of the nonmetals total, also from three-fourths to four-fifths. Six States-Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, and Utah-each handled more than 100 million tons of ore and waste, and together they accounted for 43 percent of the U.S. total. When the large-volume construction materials (sand and gravel and stone) were excluded from the totals, four States-Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and Utah-supplied over half of the material handled.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the mining industry, has identified and demonstrated the effectiveness of several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include the following: identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face to maximize usage of the primary airflow, identifying optimum face airflow rates for maximizing dilution effects, and coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate to minimize outby airflow contamination. Application of these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

The effect of changes of atmospheric pressure on methane emissions from extensive worked-out areas of coal mines in several Midwestern States has lone caused concern to State and Federal mining departments, as well as to the operating companies involved. Common mining and ventilation methods employed in mines in these States have resulted in large sealed and unsealed worked-out areas in which considerable quantities of methane are emitted alone both intake-and return-air courses. The common practice is to watch barometric changes very closely and take special precautionary measurer during periods of low barometric pressure. Although the hazard is recognized, mining officials have different opinions concerning the effect of barometric pressure variations on the emission of mine gases. These opinions are based upon scattered personal observations, as no records exist of actual studies to establish such effects.

If resin-grouted roof bolts are not installed correctly, mine roof reinforcement can be affected, and roof falls can result. A bolt installation variable that is readily controlled by the mine operator is annulus thickness. The objective of this U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to study the effect of annulus thickness variations on the integrity of 3/4-in-diam resin-grouted bolts. Forged-head test bolts, 2 and 1 ft long, were installed in concrete blocks that had been drilled with 1-, 1-1/8-, 1-1/4-, 1-3/8-, and 1-1/2-in-diam bits. Standard pull tests were performed; then the concrete was broken away from the bolts so that grout mix quality could be inspected. It was found that the optimum annulus thickness is 1/8-in (l-in-diam drill hole), and as annulus thickness increases from the optimum, there is a corresponding decrease in grout mix quality, effective grout ratio, and axial stiffness.

The objective of this project was to perform a preliminary study to determine the desirability/practicality of burying the communication cables in underground mines in order to protect then from the effects of fires and explosions We conducted discussions with Government and industry specialists on the physics of mine fires and explosions, mine disaster fighting, rescue, and investigation activities, and on nine operations. In addition we examined published experimental work and selected detailed NSHA accident reports on fires and explosions in underground mines. We found the overall desirability /practicality of cable burial must be regarded at this time as highly questionable, because of its benefit limitations to special sceneries, its practical operational shortcomings, and the availability of alternative cable protection options.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation the Bureau of Mines is carrying on to determine the causes, behavior, a. control of mine fires, the detection of incipient heating underground in the mines and above ground in refuse banks has received consideration.Many of the anthracite fires have been active for years and have progressed considerable distances free their original source.Some of the fires are in inaccessible territory, and it is often impossible to determine with any degree of accuracy their exact location or even the veins of coal that are afire, especially when the fire is in the upper strata and when it is impossible to go underground because of flooded conditions or the presence of an irrespirable atmosphere.In such cases, the only means by which the trend of a fire may be ascertained (as a result of any fire-fighting methods that may have been employed) are the sampling, exanination, and interpretation of the gaseous products coming from the fire area. The most important information desired is to know whether the temperature in the heated area is increasing or decreasing and to determine whether a fire that has been sealed is cooling down to normal mine temperatures or is maintaining its heat or is increasing in intensity due to infiltration of outside air.Interpretation of the analyses of gaseous products from refuse banks on the surface also should be of value in combating such fires. Refuse bank fires, with the additional danger of starting an underground fire through ignition of the outcrop, are by no means unknown in the anthracite coal region, and the causes of such fires are not always apparent. In a few cases the causes have been strongly suggestive of spontaneous origin."

"INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. Except where otherwise stated, this report describes conditions only to the time of completion of the Bureau of Mines investigations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop an accurate, real-time, position monitoring and warning system for the vehicles used in surface mining. The product of this research will be technology to reduce accidents and injuries associated with the operation of surface mining haulage equipment. The position monitoring system should reduce accidents related to vehicle position and also increase the efficiency of haulage operations. This research was conducted in preparation for development of an accurate, real-time position monitoring and warning system, which notifies equipment operators when they deviate from a known safe course and are approaching a fixed hazard. A radar positioning system designed for marine applications was evaluated and a series of tests was run to determine the accuracy of the radar positioning system when used in a land vehicle. The radar position determination was compared to surveyed values. Both static and dynamic (moving vehicle) tests were conducted. The static test results were marginal and the dynamic test results were not accurate enough for the position monitoring and warning system. Although a promising technology, the system tested needs to be modified to meet the accuracy requirements of mobile mine equipment.

An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission.
