"A set of fracture profile photomicrographs is presented for fractures generated under mixed mode loading of the Pittsburgh coal. The fractal dimension is used· to characterize the irregularity of these profiles and a tentative relationship is presented between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness. Surface roughness appears to depend solely on the stress intensity and no other dependence was observed with fracture loading mode, loading rate· or specimen orientation. Observations of crack bifurcations.in fracture profiles can indicate crack growth direction whereas direct surface observations generally cannot in materials such as rock and coal.1 INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine fragments of material as a result of some loading event occurs in many industrial processes. In crushing and grinding, the efficient production of fine fragments is the desired end result; .however, in coal cutting, the production of fine fragments may lead to high levels of respirable dust in the immediate atmosphere with the danger of human lung diseases. Two of the most important sources of fragments in the 1 to 10 micron size range during a cutting process are 1) severe crushing in a zone near the loading tool and 2) subsequent shearing along major crack surfaces that form the larger fragments during material reduction. These and other sources of fine fragments generation are discussed by Roepke (1984) and Zipf and Bieniawski (1986). The physical character of the nearly created major crack surfaces is believed to have a strong influence on the amount of fine fragment generation that occurs during subsequent shearing movement. When the major large fragments initially form, they are ""locked"" in place by the irregular character of the new fracture surface. Only after some relative motion has occurred between fragments are they actually liberated, and the net result is the formation of additional fine fragments. The fine fragmentation is not necessarily limited to the shearing of high points from the macrocrack surf ace since material remaining in the wake of the crack tip is damaged to a substantial depth below the actual crack surface."

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effects of potassium trithiocarbonate (KTTC), a degradation product of potassium ethylxanthate (KEX), on flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Small amounts of KTTC were identified in fresh and aged solutions of KEX using thin-layer chromotography. Hallimond tube flotation tests on pure minerals showed that KTTC acts as a weak collector for chalcopyrite. Both KEX and KTTC tend to depress molybdenite, but the depression effect is easily overcome by addition of a small quantity of fuel oil. The results of the Hallimond tube tests were confirmed in batch flotation tests using a porphyry copper ore.

More than 500 fires are now burning in abandoned coal waste banks and coal deposits in the United States. Once established, such fires can burn for decades, and extinguishing them by conventional methods such as surface sealing to exclude air, excavation to remove fuel, or flushing to cool the fire zone is usually difficult and always expensive. Burnout Control, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines for the control of abandoned coal fires, involves the accelerated combustion of coal in place with total management of the heat and fumes produced. A burning waste bank or mine is placed under negative pressure relative to the atmosphere, and heat and combustion products are drawn from the combustion zone through an exhaust ventilation system. Heat produced appears as sensible heat in the exhaust, at temperatures as high as 1,000° C (1,832° F), and could be recovered for the production of steam, hot water, process heat, or electricity. The Bureau's first field demonstration of Burnout Control was at Calamity Hollow in Allegheny County, PA (near Pittsburgh). Calamity Hollow was the site of an underground mine in the. 1900's and was surface mined in the 1940's. In the winter of 1961~62, a fire of undetermined origin was discovered in the exposed coal. In 1963, the Bureau constructed a trench barrier around the fire and a surface seal over the affected area. The fire was isolated but, not completely extinguished. In 1979, when the Bureau began work on the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project to demonstrate controlled burnout, the fire was still smoldering on the hot side of the trench barrier. The project, which was begun in December 1979 and ended in July 1982, consisted of the design, construction, operation, and subsequent dismantling of a Burnout Control ventilation system. This report, although considered part 2, is actually the last of a five-part series that describes the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project. It was written last because it involved the analysis of a substantial body of data describing in detail the results of a continuous 4-month burnout operation. The first report, part 1, describes the design and construction of the field installation. Part 3 describes the instrumentation used to control and monitor the progress of the burnout operation. Parts 4 and 5 deal with the closeout phase of the field demonstration. Part 4 describes the procedure used to quench the fire, and part 5 describes the final excavation and backfilling of the heated zones. The reports in this series document the Calamity Hollow controlled burnout demonstration, which showed that (1) controlled in situ combustion is a feasible method for controlling underground fires in abandoned mines, (2) the resultant thermal exhaust output is suffIcient for energy utilization, and (3) water injection-fume exhaustion is a potentially effective method for cooling large underground fire zones. Further investigations of both Burnout Control and the water injection-fume exhaustion quenching procedure are planned.

The principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji in 1982 were unrefined gold, silver, and tellurium. The combined value of these commodities was about $16 million,2 representing over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products were the other minerals produced in Fiji. Despite the small part played by minerals in Fiji's economy, exploration on land and in the coastal areas was carried out by several international mining companies representing Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and U.S. interests. At the end of 1982, 30 prospecting licenses covering 2,300 square kilometers were issued. Most licenses were for copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Total expenditure on mineral exploration was $3.5 million.

The Bureau of Mines developed two methods for determining iron II and iron III in 2- to 5-mg samples of coal using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometry. One method used solid coal samples; the other method used aqueous solutions. The method using solid samples was more simple, technically, but required the use of X-ray fluorescent analysis, or another independent method, for determining total iron in the samples, and the results were subject to some uncertainty. The method using aqueous solutions appeared capable of greater certainty and did not require additional methods of total iron analysis but was more involved procedurally. The coals analyzed were found to contain much more iron II than iron III.

An independent contractor is defined by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as ?any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.? Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines. Companies In 2007, a total of 2,999 contracting companies reported employment at coal mines to MSHA, or 35.7% of all independent contracting companies.

This report presents information obtained by examination and investigation of manganese deposits in northeastern Oregon during May and June 1954 and April 1957. Maps, assays, and other examination data are presented on 10 manganese deposits -9 in Baker County and 1 in Grant County. Included among these deposits are all those that have undergone substantial exploration or have a record of production. Seven of the Baker County deposits occur as characteristically small, irregular pods and lenses in argillite. The remaining Baker County prospects are [marily] narrow, vein-type occurrences in schist. The Grant County occurrence in greenstone and serpentine. All the deposits are composed of various manganese oxides, intermixed with abundant quartz and chert.

Roof screening for ground control originated with metal miners in the western United States. At first chain-link fence was used, but because it was so difficult to handle, the miners started installing a more rigid welded wire screen used in the concrete industry. Eventually coal mines in the west began to use screen, and now more and more coal operations, especially longwall mines, are installing roof screen on a regular basis. Screen use has recently increased in the Illinois basin and is now making its way to underground coal mines in the eastern U.S.

The mean and the standard deviation were used to describe general sulfur and ash populations as well as specific populations of these variables from one coal seam. Both the mean and the standard deviation were incorporated in the exploration process to determine the number of drill cores necessary for seam evaluation and to guide the sequential drilling plan. Probability regions were computed to establish a basis for predicting probable ranges of average sulfur and ash concentrations that may be expected upon continued or future drilling. A computerized plot program was utilized to interpolate sulfur and ash concentrations between grid points. The plot program, which is essentially a moving average technique, permits a rapid evaluation of sulfur, sulfur forms, and ash spatial distributions as a drilling program progresses sequentially. This information, in the form of contour plots, can be made available to both the mining engineer and the fuel technologist in advance of mining to outline reserves, to improve selective mining, and to anticipate preparation facilities.

"A coordinated, integrated research effort aimed at studying the scientific, engineering and medical aspects of the respirable dust problem is underway in the areas of dust generation, dust dispersion and dilution, dust characterization, interaction of dust and lungs, and relationship of seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. (FIGURE 24) The Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated.Research projects in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust have effected several improved methods for the preparation and characterization of the dusts needed by these projects. Superior procedures for generating ""standard"" dust samples have been developed and are in regular use in the laboratory. Questions raised during the course of some projects regarding ""stale"" versus ""fresh"" dust have led to the development of sampling techniques where the dust is directly collected in a surfactant. MSHA and CANMET have requested and received information on Center generated software. An equipment manufacturer, TSI, Inc., requesting input on modifying the inlet of an aerosol sampler has been assisted as a result of research that was conducted at the University of Minnesota.The objectives, scope and progress of all the research projects in the Center, in the form of abstracts and reports, have been detailed in Volume 1 of this series. Research papers written by the principle investigators and resulting from the findings of projects (FIGURE 25) and which are funded by U.S. Bureau of Mines grant number G1135142 have been published in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. Volume 2 relates the cooperation and interaction of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust in research on the problem of respirable dust in the mineral industries."

"Physical conditions, such as thickness and character of the coal seam, dip or pitch of the seam, depth of cover, character of roof and overlying strata, mine water, etc., affect the productivity in bituminous-coal mining. Thickness of the coal seam being mined is probably the most important single item that determines whether the output per man per day shall be low or high; however, in strip mining the depth of cover or overburden to be moved is of equal importance.Bituminous coal is mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness - less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet; however, a large majority of the mines are producing .coal from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. The average thickness of the coal seams mined in the United States has not changed materially in the past 25 years. The average seam thickness for all bituminous-coal mines was 63 inches in 1920 4/ and 65 inches in 19)45. As thick seams have been exhausted in the older fields, other thick seams, have been opened in the newer fields.Productivity increased from 4 net tons per man per day in 1920 to 5.78 in 1945. This 45 percent increase in productivity resulted from increased mechanization. The percentage of underground production represented by coal cut by machines increased from 61 in 1920 to 91 in 1945 Mechanical loading increased from less than 1 percent of underground production in 1920 to 56 percent in 1945, and strip mining increased from less than 2 percent to 19 percent of the total production during the same period."

Saturated hydrocarbons from 60 selected samples of a 2,300-foot Green River Formation oil-shale core (Piceance Creek Basin, Colo.) were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography techniques. Emphasis was placed upon the distribution of normal alkanes and 15 key-branched and cyclic alkanes. The latter compounds consisted of the C15, C16, C18, C19, and C20 chain isoprenoids, the 5-a and 5-ß C27, C28, and C29 steranes, three C30 pentacyclic triterpanes, and perhydro-ß-carotene. The results showed definite evidence of maturation of both the n-alkanes and the branched and cyclic alkanes; however, most if not all of the changes were limited to the indigenous soluble extract and were not the result of additional soluble extract generation from the insoluble kerogen. Source material and environmental variations were important factors in some of the observed differences in the branched plus cyclic alkane compositions.

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. Except for the mineral fuel commodities, the detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. In October 1977, responsibility for the collection of data on mineral fuels-coal, petroleum, natural gas, and natural gas liquids-was transferred to the newly created Department of Energy. Although chapters covering these commodities will no longer appear in Volume I of the Minerals Yearbook, quantity and value data have been included in most of these summary tables to maintain statistical consistency in State and national value of overall crude mineral output. This shift in responsibility has also resulted in changes to the composition of the "Nonmetals? and "Mineral Fuels" groups in table 1 and table 2. The commodities-asphalt and related bitumens (natural), carbon dioxide (natural), helium, and peat-have been removed from the ?Mineral Fuels" group, and are now included under the "Nonmetals" group. There has been no change in the components of the "Metals" group.

The miner's seismic source strength can be approximately estimated on the basis of a single force acting in an infinite medium. Because of the uncertain- ty involved in estimating the amount of conversion from mechanical energy to seismic energy, the source strength thus estimated may be in error by as much as a half-order of magnitude. Calculations of wave transmission must take into account geometrical spreading, dissipation of energy by internal friction, and energy partition due to reflection and refraction of waves impinging on inter- faces in the layered earth. Theoretically derived peak-to-peak particle velocities in microinches per second (PIPS) are given for two models ; viz: (i) 50-feet thick and (ii) 100- feet thick 4000 ft/sec layers with Q = 20, overlying a half-space of 10,000 ft/sec material with Q = 5O;for the cases .of a hammer blow and a timber impact, at the frequencies of 50 Hz and 100 Hz. Comparison of the theoretically derived peak-to-peak particle velocity with experimental data taken at the Copper Queen Mine indicates that the theoretical particle velocity may be overestimated. A discussion of the distortion of seismic wavefronts by mine tunnels indicates that it is unfavorable to use a seismic source impact on the floor of the tunnel, since deceptive delays in arrival time are liable to occur at the surface. A program of parallel theoretical and experimental work is required to clarify uncertainties still associated with the nature and strength of the miner's seismic source signal which cannot be resolved within the approximations of this work. Its major components include theoretical investigations of the (1) Wave diffraction and scattering of an impact source on a face of a cylindrical cavity. (2) Impact of an elastic object on an elastic medium.

Coal mines that undergo self-heatings, and specifically mines that sustain both floor heave and self-heatings, would benefit from the use of sealants to minimize air ingress to susceptible areas. The U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) evaluated three sealant systems for this purpose, bentonite-water mixtures, silicate gel, and guar gum gel. The guar gum-based gel was the only sealant that possessed the desired properties of elasticity, ease of preparation, adaptability to the mine, and a long life. In addition, since the gel consists mostly of water, it could quench or cool nearby heatings. Optimal formulations were determined in laboratory tests, and then tested in the USBM Safety Research Coal Mine. Two formulations resulted in stable gels that lasted for at least 12 months in the mine. Semi continuous preparation of gel using an eductor was evaluated and appears feasible. Although guar gum gel is expensive, selective use to prevent heatings in specific areas would be cost-effective, both interms of productivity and enhanced mine safety.

Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. A nearly dormant copper sulfide pilot-scale experimental leach containing 8.7 tons of are was injected with oxygen to determine its effect on the copper-leaching rate. Prior treatment of the uncrushed 0.25-percent-copper, mine-run stripping material consisted of 461 days of acid ferric sulfate leaching, which extracted 47 percent of the total copper. The permeability of the bed had decreased, and the percolation rate had decreased from an initial 20 gallons to 0.8 gallon per square foot per day. Copper extraction had nearly stopped. After injecting oxygen into the ore column and leaching for 30 days, the percolation rate was increased to 6 gallons per square foot per day. In an additional 298 days of leaching, an additional 40.7 percent of the copper was extracted. The improved leaching after the use of oxygen is attributed to stimulated bacterial action, better oxidation, and increased permeability.
