The conventional gallery test used by the Bureau of Mines Explosives Testing Station and corresponding establishments in other countries to establish the permissibility of explosives serves principally to differentiate the relatively safe explosive from the positively unsafe one. It has been recognized for many years that a more definitive test is needed to measure the relative incendivity to firedamp of explosives and explosive devices. A new method - the oxygen-value test - for measuring this incendivlty quantitatively has been devised and is being tested at Bruceton, Pa. To date, this testing bas been limited mainly to straight nitroglycerin dynamites. It is planned to study application of the method to permissible explosives in the near future. These results will be reported later. In the present report, permissible explosives will not be considered specifically.

1. In the United States, the industrial application of centrifugal force for separating phase constituents has been confined almost entirely to aqueous systems at room temperature. This paper presents results for experimental tests on the use of centrifugal force for separating the liquid and solid phases in molten nonferrous alloys. 2. The development and use of a small centrifuge for treating molten metals is described. The centrifugal apparatus was, in essence, a 3-inch diameter spinner pot, which revolved, within -a gas -fired furnace, at speeds up to 3,000 r.p.m.

"Introduction.Oil-field operations have often been carried on under great stress and haste, in which the prime purpose has been to put the wells down rapidly as possible, without regard to a few of the various factors affecting cost. In such fields as Burkurnett, Texas, where the well locations are town lots and other small tracts, the operator was concerned primarily with in drilling. In such cases a few thousand dollars more or less in the cost of a well not considered. We are reaching a time, however, when our reserves a,more definitely outlined and properties are being along more economic lines. Operators are becoming more concerned with the actual cost of this work, and are gradually learning that fuel consumption can be reduced in drilling and producing without delaying the speed of drilling, and in the case of production, it will greatly reduce the unit cost per barrel of production.Types of Field Boilers.In the oil fields there are in general two types of boilers; those which are used for drilling wells and are of a more or less portable character, and those established later in a more permanent form and serve for the purpose,of generating steam for producing the oil. As a rule, the latter type of boilers are larger than those of the drilling type. Usually, little care is given to the installation of drilling boilers; particularly in attempting to set them up in such a way as to avoid waste in of fuel. Because of the temporary nature of these installations there may be some justification for not giving them more,attention in this resend, but it is believed that a few precautions could be taken that would amply repay the cost and trouble taken. In connection with the boiler plants that are afterwards established, when a few producing wells have been,brought in with a life of two to ten years and probably longer, much care to the boiler-plant construction and to the installation of recording instruments which will assist in operating the plant at minimum cost."

"INTRODUCTION The augmented demands for natural gas in many parts of the United States as a result of war have increased the need for information regarding the producing characteristics of natural-gas and gas-condensate-type wells capable of delivering large volumes of gas, as such information is important to the formulation of conservative and efficient operative and recovery practices.,For many years, the capacity of natural-gas wells to produce gas has received studied consideration by Bureau of Mines' engineers, and three reports 3/ on gaging gas-well capacities have been published. In Report of Investigations 2929, Pierce and Rawlins point out that for accurate gaging, the actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well and the relationship between such pressures and the rates of flow of gas through the sand must be determined. "The ""rate-of-preduotion curve"" described in the revised Treasury Manual* was devised by the author in May, 1920, and since that time has been use by the oil and gas valuation section of the Treasury Department in determining the rate of production of wells for purposes of taxation. This curve is most useful for estimating the future production of a well, or group of wells, of known daily settled production, where future-production curves and tables based on yearly production records are available. It also provides a means for determining the past year's production of a well of known daily settled production, or conversely, the estimated production on any day for a well of known yearly production.The rate-of-production curve is auxiliary to the production decline curve and is derived from it in estimating the future production of a tract, a production decline curve formed from the records of the tract itself should be used. If such records are not available, and there is no information which leads to the belief that the average production decline of the wells in this tract differs from the average for the pool or district, an average curve for the pool or district may be used.The accompanying chart illustrates a typical rate-of-production curve, with the yearly production decline curve from which it is derived. The production decline curve shown is for an average well in the Augusta district, Butler County, Kansas, and has been constructed from the tables given on page 128 of the revised Treasury Manual.The ordinate (vertical scale on the chart) of any point on a yearly production decline curve represents the production of the well during the year previous to the date shown by the abscissa (horizontal scale). For example, the chart shows that an average well, which produced 100,000 barrels of oil in 1915. produced 92,000 barrels in the year previous to January 19, 1916, produced 53,300 barrels in the year previous to June 1, 1916; produced 49,000 barrels in the year previous to July 1, 1916, 27,000 barrels in 1916, and 10,000 barrels in 1917."

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Westmoreland County for coking tests was based, in part, on estimates of the coal reserves by Dowd,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousands of tons, as follows: [ ]

Degasification and methane control in underground coal mining is an important area augmenting conventional ventilation in order to prevent possible fires and explosions due to excessive methane emissions. Coal bed reservoir engineering has been applied for many years to coalbed methane production. In recent years, modeling the flow and draining methane, not only from coal bed itself but also from the overlying strata, have been recognized as important areas of expertise for supplementing underground ventilation. This paper demonstrates the applications of coal bed reservoir engineering and modeling techniques for optimizing and controlling methane emissions in longwall and continuous miner sections. Practical applications and some considerations are presented for reservoir modeling, borehole performances, and face emission predictions for various coal bed and borehole configurations. A section on field reservoir studies and well bore log analyses for methane control are also presented as a complementary way of controlling methane and optimizing ventilation.

DOMEST1C production of carbon black in 1963, remained at about the same level as in 1962. Carbon black produced by the furnace process increased 2 percent to 1,880 million pounds in 1963 and accounted for 91 percent of the total output. Channel black production continued to decline and was 14 percent less than a year ago. Shipments during 1963 totaled 2,098 million pounds, a 1 percent increase for the year. An increase of 88 million pounds in domestic sales was partially offset by a decrease of 72 million pounds in carbon black exports. Total value of carbon black production in 1963 was $148 million. The average value per pound was 7.18 cents or 0.12 cent per pound more than in 1962.

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

"Tho the term “magnesite” is generally applied to the iron-bearing carbonate of magnesium, such as is found in Austria and Hungary, by some Austrian magnesite is referred to as bruennerite. The mineral bruennerite has become of commercial importance only in Austria. The important deposits are found in Styria, lower Austria and northern Hungary. It is of interest to know that the world's largest deposit of spathic iron ores or iron carbonate (FeCO3), occurs at Eisenerz, Styria, while the world's largest deposit of spathic bruennerite is found at Veitsch in the same province.The Styrian and lower Austrian deposits are located much nearer the Adriatic sea than are the deposits of northern Hungary; and it is from the former that most of the exported magnesite has come. They are located south-west of Vienna, and extend west from Semmering thru the Murz Valley to Tyrol. The chief deposits reckoning from east to west are those of Semmering, Veitsch, Breitenau, Trieben, Radenthein, and Dienten.The largest and most important deposit is that at Veitsch located near Mitterdorf, on the South Austrian railroad in the Murz Valley, Styria. Here the magnesite, which occurs in the form of a lens is quarried on the slope of a hill in a series of terraces about 50 feet apart. The entire work extends thru a vertical distance of 500 feet. The huge magnesite lens is nearly 4 of a mile long and over 1,000 feet in width, and probably extends to a considerable depth.The formation containing the magnesite extends eastward beyond Vienna into Northern Hungary where magnesite is quarried beyond Jolsva and Nyustya in the Gomor district. In spite of the remote location of these deposits as compared with those in Styria, magnesite was shipped from them before the war a distance of 360 miles to the port of Fiume for overseas shipments to other parts of Europe and to America.The average analysis showing the composition of the Austria-Hungary mineral is as follows:The magnesite occurs as lenticular masses in a belt of Carboniferous rocks consisting mainly of metamorphosed Shales, sandstones, conglomerates,,and limestone, It is grayish in color when fresh, and contains sufficient ferrous carbonate to blacken it when calcined. It turns brown owing to the oxide ion of the ferrous carbonate when exposed to the air. The quantity of carbonate of iron is ariable and different analyses show that it ranges up to 13 or 14%For the most part, only the sintered article has been imported into The United States. This material has achieved an enviable reputation for its uniformity both as to chemical and physical characteristics. The homogeneity of the sintered Austrian magnesite is doubtless due in part to the averaging effect of the different operations, such as crushing, dressing, sintering, And mixing, n effect which is not obtainable in mere hand samples.There is comparatively little variability in the sintered magnesite as marketed, and five analyses of this sintered magnesite as quoted by Cornu* are gas follows:"

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

An improved method for preparing gravimetric standard gas mixtures of helium-4 in nitrogen has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A single-pan 12-kg analytical balance that has a sensitivity of 3 mg is used to prepare the mixture. The balance will accommodate a cylinder having a volume of approximately 4 L that weighs approximately 5 kg. The method has been improved to a precision of ±O.04 pct by performing four successive dilutions, by improved handling of gases in the manifold, and by using an improved analytical method to select high-purity gases.

Real gross national product3 (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% in the fourth quarter compared with a revised 4.3% rate in the third quarter, according to the most recent estimates released by the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). Expanding inventories, Government purchases of goods and services, residential fixed investment, and a narrowing of the trade deficit fueled the growth. Significantly reduced consumer demand led to the heavy inventory growth. Almost half of the buildup in inventories consisted of automobiles because consumers reduced purchases when Detroit ceased most incentive programs in late summer. Reduced consumer demand also affected imports, however, and the narrowing of the trade deficit resumed after widening in the third quarter. Nonresi- [ ] dential fixed investment also declined after a strong gain in the third quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.9%, the same as that of 1986. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, the real growth reached 3.8%, the highest growth since 19M, and exceeded the Reagan Administration's estimate of 3.4%. Rising merchandise exports accounted for about one-third of the growth in GNP for all of 1987 and are expected to continue to grow as domestic manufactures benefit from the lower value of the dollar vis-a-vis other major trading country currencies. Consumer demand became a less important factor of economic growth, but employment continued to grow (table 2), and civilian unemployment declined by 0.9 percentage points (December to December) as the industrial sector geared up to increase exports. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, remained low at 3.4%.

"INTRODUCTION The method of differential thermal analysis suggested by Le Chatelier (1)1 in 1887 has recently emerged as an outstanding means of studying the constitution of various substances, particularly clays, soils, and miscellaneous hydrous materials (2). The literature ably discusses the applications and results obtained but has paid too little attention to specific details of construction of the apparatus. Knowledge of the apparatus is of importance to the experienced research man as is extremely useful to the novice v ho ventures into this field of analysis. Further, it is generally acknowledged that the variations in design and conditions of operation are one of the essential causes for differences in characteristic temperatures as reported by various investigators. A step forward in the elimination of such differences is the publication of the details of construction and operation of a simple and inexpensive apparatus that has proved useful at the southern Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, where it was used in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."

In 1925 the Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., after several years of experimental work, installed a system for signalling from cages which has been operating efficiently and with low upkeep costs for the post 19 years. The system was adopted for a large western metal mine but was later abandoned be arse of the constantly shifting shaft alinement. Recently the system has been studied and probably will be put into service at two other large mines. One of the principal reasons wry the system has not boon adopted more widely has been the lack of adequate details both as to the desirability of having such a system and as to its construction and operation. Previous signaling, systems contained undesirable features, such as charged bare wires extending the full length of the shaft. Under the direction of O. N. Friendly, then general superintendent of the Judge Mining & Smelting Co., the present system, entailing the use of a samll current at low voltage, was gradually developed. Many of the refinements in the system wore contributed by Leonard Wilson, consulting electrical engineer, Salt Lake City, Utah.

"IntroductionThe behavior of dust clouds in mine atmospheres has been a subject of longstanding interest due to both health and safety reasons. Pioneering studies in Germany and SMRE focussed on ambient dust concentration, principally aimed at determining optimum velocities for effective dilution. A summary of studies related to this area is provided by Hall,(l) Efforts to understand dust deposition from the explosion hazard point of view led to experiments in return airways (2-4) followed by experiments in longwalls.(5) Concerted efforts, either experimental or theoretical, were not made until recently to relate ambient concentration with dust deposition in mines. In 1974 Hwang et a1 (6) developed a computer model to predict dust concentration which considered deposition-concentration relationships. Also, experimental studies involving concurrent dust deposition and ambient concentration were conducted in the U.S. by Courtney et al (7 ) in operating mines. Efforts to relate theory with experimental results have been made by Owen (8) and Hwang et al (6 ) for dust deposition. There has been limited work, however, to determine the application of the theories and assumptions from aerosol sciences for modeling dust flows in mine atmospheres. (9 ) This is the objective of the work currently underway in the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust since· 1983 under a project titled, ""Prediction of Ambient Dust Concentration in Mine Atmospheres."" The scope of the project activities include:1. Development of a mathematical model to predict dust deposition and concentration in mine atmospheres.2. Experimental studies on dust transport and deposition in mine airways.3. Comparison of the model results with the experimental data."

The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the operation of a 6-ton blast furnace on a charge of bauxite, limestone, iron ore, and cast-iron turnings and to point out the bearing which smelting such a charge has upon the production of alumina cement. One object of the experiment, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Aluminum Co. of America, was to determine whether tae so-called Pedersen process3 can be applied to the blast furnace. This process consists of smelting a charge of bauxite, iron ore, and. limestone, and results in to products. One is a slag containing about 50 per cent of A1203 and is intended for use in manufacturing aluminum, and the other is iron low in sulphur. Complete details of the test are published in other reports4. Blast-furnace slag is now recognized as a satisfactory and economical raw material for making Portland cement, Wm. A. Forbes5 has recently reported that in 1926 an important steel interest used well over 1 million tons of slag in producing about 24 million long, tons of cement. This is equivalent to about ½ ton of slag for each ton of cement. Alumina cement can be made direct in the blast furnace. Its physical character would have to be changed by grinding, but no change in its chemical composition would be necessary.
