This report describes the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS) developed by the Bureau of Mines to analyze the records of industrial hygiene samples collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in metal and nonmetal mines. MIDAS is the first system capable of sorting, editing, analyzing, and reporting these data. It is also the first system designed to be used by a number of Government agencies. At present the system contains 225,000 personal and area samples for 61 contaminants in 45 industries. The records date from 1974 to early 1980, and MSHA plans to provide yearly updates to the system. This report presents preliminary analyses of dust exposures and discusses the potential uses and limitations of these data. Analysis of the dust data for 1978 and 1979 showed that bagging had the highest percentage of dust overexposure. Morn than 40 pct of the 1,536 respirable quartz dust, total nuisance dust, and total silica dust samples exceeded the MSHA exposure limit. Other dusty occupations are ranked according to their percentage of overexposure.

"INTRODUCTION.Luring the year 1923 a complete survey was made of the condition of research in the reduction (milling) and concentration of ores and nonmetallic minerals - that is, up to the stage where the ores or concentrates were ready for hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatment. This survey was carried on under the general supervision of L. A. Lyon, assistant director and chief metallurgist of the Bureau of mines, in cooperation with the milling committee of the American Institute of mining and metallurgical Engineers, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California. Other institutions, including the National Research council, were of assistance and outlined recommendations during the study.While this report is on ""ore dressing"", it contains short sections on coal and clay. The mechanical handling that these minerals undergo is ""dressing"", so that ore dressing is inclusive of metallic and nonmetallic minerals. ""milling"", in its broadest sense, includes with ore dressing certain other metallurgical treatment which the report is not designed to cover.The survey revealed that considerable experimentation is being carried on great cost to the mining industry, but that the research is in general poorly coordinated while companies and firms are adequately taking care of routine tests and the mechanical features involved in their own operations, no comprehensive study of the fundamental principles of ore reduction is now in progress or contemplated. Many industries, besides mining, are interested in the preparation of materials for final treatment, rendering this investigation of value also to them. This class of fundamental research is neglected by industry unless there is some agency which can bring together at least a majority of this interested in a cooperative effort. It can not be effectively handled by a single company; and, moreover, no company can be expected to bear the whole burden of an investigation to benefit the entire industry or a number of industries hence there is need for concerted study within reasonable limits. Furthermore, co-operation eliminates duplication, which is largely a waste of effort and capital."

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

A program was conducted to determine whether sufficient quantities of the flame retardant, ammonium phosphate, could be incorporated in a water-based foam solution to prevent or delay reignition (burnback) without. significant degradation of foam properties. Up to 20% of mono and diammonium phosphate was added .to d high expansion foam solution. This mixture was applied as a high expansion foam to burning wood and coal samples. The effect of this mixture on burnback was laboratory tested by placing the wood or coal sample in front of a radiant panel. It was found that diammonium phosphate levels of 20% by weight prevented reignition without degrading foam properties. A field test was then conducted using a 20%, diammonium phosphate mixture and a control with no phosphate on a wood crib fire. The experimental foam did extinguish the crib fire faster than the control as evidenced by the smoke from the crib. However neither crib reignited.

This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines concerns different methods of face haulage used with various types of continuous-mining machines, mobile-loading machines, and track-mounted equipment under varying roof and bottom conditions and in coalbeds of varying thicknesses. This report is the ninth in a series on mechanical mining in bituminous coal mines. Reference to the reports previously published is made in appendix III, p. 106. Use of modern mining equipment in bituminous coal mines has resulted in increased productivity at the face. This especially is true where continuous-mining machines are used, and the supervision is good. Previous methods and equipment for moving coal from the face became inadequate and had to be improved to restore balance to the mining systems. Sometimes new equipment was needed to improve the face haulage, and in some instances, a new combination of existing equipment was used. Detailed studies of face haulage methods were made at 13 mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois to compare their effectiveness and to describe fully the conditions under which each method was used.

This report is a general summary of pertinent data on the manufacture and use of synthetic ammonia products. It provides a condensed summary of the potentialities of a synthetic ammonia industry in North Dakota for Federal, State, and private organizations that may be interested in helping to develop an integrates synthetic ammonia and fertilizer industry. The report contains discussions of: (1) Materials used in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers, nitric acid, and urea; (2) National production, imports, exports, and consumption; (3) the ammonia industry, location, capacity of plants; (4) processes used in manufacturing synthetic ammonia, nitric acid, and urea; (5) other potential industries; and (6) analyses of manufaturing and plant cosh;. Additional information on industrial compounds from ammonia and plant nutrients removed by crops is given in Appendixes 1 and 2. Synthetic ammonia is one of the primary ingredients in fertilizers. Resources required in synthetic ammonia manufacture are available in North Dakota. Hydrogen is available from the petroleum and natural gas resources, particularly in the Williston Basin, and from the large lignite resources in the State. Hydrogen can be produced from lignite by a gasification process developed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

"INTRODUCTION The first paper of this series contained data concerning the behavior of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaS04.2H20) upon calcination and subsequent leaching with water at 100° C. It was found that upon heating polyhalite to temperatures between 298 and 500° C. the water of crystallization is driven off, leaving, an amorphous mixture of K2S04, MgS04, and CaS04. Two transition points were located; one at 298° C. which coincides with the vigorous evolution of steam; and one at 551° C. which results in the formation of a hard mass of crystals. The latter probably consist of a solid solution If the compounds langbeinite (K2504, 2MgS04), potassium dicalcium sulphate (K2304. 2CaS04), and anhydrite (CaS04). The heat of decomposition of polyhalite at 298° C. was measured and found to be 66,000 ± 5,000 calories per mol. The optimum temperature of calcination with regard to subsequent extrac¬tion with two parts of water (at "" 0° C.) is 430 to 450° C. for 65 to 100 mesh material, if one half hour at the calcination temperature is allowed. The maximum concentration of K2S04 obtainable in the extraction of calcined polyhalite is 11.4 grams per 100 grams of water. This concentration of K2304 is considerably above the equilibrium value (3.6 g. per 100 L. of H20 at 83° C.) with respect to the solid phases polyhalite, potassium calcium pentasulphate, ¬and anhydrite. The figure 11.4 K. of K2804 per 100 g. of H20 is also somewhat than the equilibrium value (9,65 g. per 100 g, H20) with respect to the solid phases potassium calcium pentasulphate and syngenite."

One model each of three different makes of portable displacement seismographs was calibrated on a shaking table capable of 5,000 pounds of force, Calibration tests were conducted in the frequency range of 5 to 200 c.p,s, and in the amplitude range of 0,002 to 0.05 inch peak-to-peak, The seismographs were tested under two mounting conditions: (1) The feet of the instrument were bolted to the shaking table, and (2) the feet were resting on emery cloth affixed to the table, The results of these tests show that, in the frequency range of 5 to 40 c.p,s, and for vibration levels less than 0.2 g, the magnification for all three instruments is constant with input level but varies slightly with frequency. For vibration levels greater than 0.4 g. and for frequencies greater than 40 c.p.s., the magnification of all three instruments shows large variations with frequency and amplitude of table motion.

A Bureau of Mines study is in progress to determine the effectiveness of passive water barriers in suppressing coal-dust explosions. A 2.9-ft3-capacity water-filled plastic tub was found effective in suppressing dust explosions propagating at speeds of 250 to over 1,000 ft/sec. Work directed at determining the limitations of water barriers showed that the passive water barrier technique is also feasible for the suppression of weak dust explosions propagating at speeds of 100 to 250 ft/sec. For relatively slow accelerating flames, dynamic wind forces appear to be the important quantity governing fragmentation of the plastic tub and subsequent water release and dispersion, whereas dynamic impulse appears to be the significant quantity for rapidly accelerating flames. The acoustic approximation (relation between static pressure and flame or wind speed) is shown to be valid in a long single mine entry. This relationship appears to be useful in predicting the regions within a long single entry where passive water barriers are effective in quenching a dust explosion.

Introduction This paper is a descriptive analysis of injuries and fatalities at small surface bituminous coalmining companies in Pennsylvania. The purpose of analyzing a specific industry sector and location is to identify issues that might be missed in a wider analysis. Other studies of small mine safety (e.g., Peters and Fotta, 1994, Randolph and Boldt, 1997) have shown that the relationship between safety and mine size is not a simple one. Some injury types occur at higher rates at small mines, while others occur at lower rates. Consequently, an analysis limited to a specific type of mining can help identify hazards and issues specific to that sector. The results of this analysis will be useful for directing training, intervention, and research efforts towards the most prevalent causal factors and incident types. Procedures and Definitions Data sources The primary sources of data for this analysis were files provided by MSHA containing information collected under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50. These files, commonly referred to as “Part 50 data”, are provided though MSHA’s Program Evaluation and Information Resources directorate. Two primary types of injuries were selected from the Part 50data: Fatalities (MSHA “degree of injury” code 1) and lost-time injuries, otherwise known as nonfatal with days lost (MSHA “degree of injury” codes 2 through 5). Lost-time injuries involve either actual days away from work or days of restricted activity or both. Fatality and lost-time injury incidence rates were calculated using the standard MSHA formula: Number of injuries per 200,000 employee-hours. Additional information on company sizes and mine ownership was provided by the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Time span A five-year time span was selected for this study. More than a single year of safety experience is usually needed to capture a broad range of incident types. Many types of injuries, especially fatal injuries, can be extremely rare, and may be missed if too short a time span is selected. However, a time span that extends too far back may begin to suffer historical threats to validity. That is, incidents that occurred several years ago may be caused by hazards that have since been remedied or may be related to mining practices and conditions that no longer exist. A five-year span offers a practical compromise between these two concerns. Consequently, the MSHA Part 50 data files from 1993 through 1997 were used. The 1997 file was in “preliminary” form at the time of the study, so small variations from the final 1997 “close out” file can be expected. Based on past experience, we do not expect the close-out variations to have a significant impact on the findings.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. In recent years the demand for products of greater refractoriness has placed an ever-increasing emphasis on ceramic materials, including the metallic oxides. Magnesia (MgO) is one of the most important of these oxides, exhibiting, as it does, high electrical resistivity, high slag resistance, and a melting point of 2,800° C. However, magnesia has a tendency to hydrate in the presence of water and to volatilize above 1,500° C. in certain kiln atmospheres and has a comparatively low resistance to thermal shock. Because of these disadvantages, the previously listed advantages inherent in this material have been largely overlooked, and research on magnesia has lagged behind that on oxides such as alumina and zirconia. This bibliography has been prepared in an effort to present to Government and industry a comprehensive picture of the prospects for greater utilization of magnesia as a refractory material in future research. To provide as selective and accurate a collection as possible, the references included cover magnesia in a pure state, not as an additive or in combination with other materials. However, several references discuss the effect of minor impurities (less than 5 percent of the total) on the properties of magnesia, as these papers are considered to be of special importance. A few references to articles on forming techniques are also included, as they are valuable additions to the overall treatment of the subject. The processes used in obtaining and refining the raw materials are adequately covered in earlier publications and are excluded. A number of references are omitted as being of questionable value in enhancing the cumulative study of pure magnesia as an ultra-high-temperature refractory material.

The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. "It has long been recognized that the properties of polycrystalline substances are not the same as those of single crystals. These differences are especially marked in metels and metallic minerals, and are of greatest practical importance in metal working and ore treatment. The property changes encountered in passing from a metal single crystal to a poly-crystalline aggregate are the same as are produced by cold-working a metal or by the precipitation of a disperse phase. Hence, we may logically assume that the property changes are all due directly or indirectly to the formation of interfacial area or internal surface. Our problem, then, is to ascertain the physicochemical state of the metal atoms at such internal surface and show how this physicochemical condition accounts for the pronounced changes of mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties that accompany increased internal surface.GENERAL CONCEPT OF INTERNAL SURFACEIn 1678, Huyghens attempted to explain the double refraction of calcite by postulating that crystals were built from a regular arrangement of ellipsoidal particles. Over 100 years later, Abbé Hauy concluded from his studies of cleavage that crystals might be built from small units, but the units were of the same shape as the entire crystal. This idea, which was prevalent in mineralogical thought before the advent of X-ray spectrometry, was discarded when the great success of Bragg made it appear that the chemical atoms were in reality the elements of structure. In the further development of X-ray technique, however, C. G. Darwin, in England, and P. P. Ewald, in Germany, found it necessary to postulate crystal units con¬taining many atoms. The latter gave the name of mosaic crystals to those so constituted. The individual units are supposed to Possess the ideal atomic arrangements revealed by the X-ray but are not oriented with respect to one another."

Because of the importance of recovering more oil from known petroleum reserves, increased emphasis has been placed on the application of secondary-recovery methods. It is hoped that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases. Previously published reports3 4 5/ have described the results of water-flooding in Roane, Pleasants, and Wetzel Counties, W. Va. (fig. 1). This report describes the South Penn Oil Co. Yawkey waterflood property, Berea sand, Griffithsville oilfield, Duval District, Lincoln County, W. Va. (fig. 2).
