ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30's. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

This is the fifth of a series of annual reports4/ of technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining, preparation, and uses of coal. The research of the Bureau is carefully coordinated with the requirements of the producing and consuming industries, with a view to conservation of resources of coal in mining and use, and conservation of the health and lives of workmen employed in these industries. Such coordination is facilitated by the wide range of specialization of the several groups on engaged in studies concerning coal. Here are reported correlated studies ranging from paleobotanic analysis of the formation of coal as it occurred some millions of years ago to the effect of mechanical methods of mining on present-day employment in mines. As this is a summary of the current work of the Bureau of Mines, so the Bureau likewise has provided a condensed review of the outstanding current work of others on research and technology of coal 5/.

The aced for reliable reserves of the essential element, manganese, has been a continuing concern of the Federal Government for more than three decades. Because of the increasing vulnerability of outside sources of supply efforts have been intensified to find a means for beneficiating United States domestic deposits. The deposits of most interest would of necessity be near, or have access to, suitable transportation to processing plants. The Georgia manganiferous iron deposits represent some 10 million tons4 of ore readily available to southern iron and steel industries, if a manganese recovery process capable of functioning in the presence of large quantities of iron can be developed. In addition, a successful method for beneficiating the Georgia ore could produce a significant quantity of high-grade iron concentrate. The Differential sulfatization process developed 47 the Bureau of Mines5 seemed to be well suited for this application, particularly because it results in low concentrations of iron in the leach liquors with relatively complete extractions of manganese. In this process, manganese in the presence of iron is preferentially reacted with sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures and subsequently extracted with water.

This report is the third in a series presenting equilibrium vapor-liquid data for helium-bearing natural gases. The first two reports contained phase data for the gases processed for helium at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo and Exell, Tex., helium plants. The present report offers similar information for a lower-helium-content (0.75 mole-percent) natural gas to be processed in the Department of the Interior's long-range helium-conservation program. A windowed-cell apparatus was used to obtain 218 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 73 experimental conditions ranging in temperature from -100° F to -275° F and in pressure from 100 to 500 psi. From the phase data, the condensation characteristics, helium solubility, and equilibrium-vaporization-coefficient data for helium, nitrogen, and methane were evaluated. The effect of using a. preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon the subsequent vapor-liquid compositions is reported. A brief comment regarding the composition effect of passing the gas through a gasoline-removal unit is also included.

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to ascertain the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage. Associat¬ed with these tests, occasional records were made of the characteristics of the air blast or concussion from the explosions. Although the importance of the air-blast problem was recognized, the equipment was not designed for airblast measurements, nor was the early research program concerned with the problem. After the ground-vibration tests had been completed, attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect. The program was modified, however, in certain aspects by the imminence of war and the final entry of the United States into the conflict. These modifications were made to supply information pertaining to military and civilian defense problems.Detailed discussion of these problems is beyond the scope of this report, which attempts to present preliminary results of factual and fundamental character. However, it may be noted that airblast data are urgently needed for intelligent design of both Government and non-Government buildings, which must withstand the air blast from bombs and afford maximum protection for the occupants. The safety of vital equipment above and below ground necessitates consideration of damage from air blast. Protection against use of dynamite by saboteurs, moreover, hinges largely on the effect of air blast. Identification of a planned ""accident"" involving dynamite often entails knowledge of the characteristics and power of the airblast.The peacetime problem of damage from air blast resulting from quarry and mining blasting activities is of course exaggerated by the wartime requirements of increased production accelerated operation, and enlarged development."

The only means of measuring the' danger is to fire the explosive into the gas mixture and note the effect, but the conditions of firing must be chosen carefully. This report is presented in the hope that it will assist in determining what method to use. The experiments have been designed to show the effect of the principal factors involved in the conditions of firing, and the results give information that seems to have some value.

The need for more and better basic thermodynamic data for the oxides of many of the rare metals is evident to anyone who attempts thermodynamic calculations involving these substances. In continuation of a Bureau of Mines program to meet this need, this paper reports new experimental values of the heats of formation at 298.15° K. of the hexagonal crystalline variety of germanium dioxide and germanium dioxide glass. The values were obtained by means of combustion calorimetry and sodium hydroxide-solution calorimetry. The calorimetric results also made possible the derivation of values for the heat and entropy of fusion of hexagonal germanium dioxide at its melting point. The newly measured data were combined with previously known entropy and high-temperature heat content values to obtain heats and free energies of formation of germanium dioxide (in the hexagonal crystalline, glassy, and liquid states) over the temperature range from 298.15° to 2,000° K.

This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining., quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and. the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted.

Point load testing is used to determine rock strength indexes in geotechnical practice. The point load test apparatus and procedure enables economical testing of core or lump rock samples in either a field or laboratory setting. In order to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, index-to-strength conversion factors are used. These factors have been proposed by various researchers and are dependent upon rock type. This study involved the extensive load frame and point load testing of coal measure rocks in six states. More than 10,000individual test results, from 908 distinct rock units, were used in the study. Rock lithologies were classified into general categories and conversion factors were determined for each category. This allows for intact rock strength data to be made available through point load testing for numerical geotechnical analysis and empirical rock mass classification systems such as the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR).

"DEFINITIONDiatomaceous earth consists almost entirely of the silicious remains of minute flowerless aquatic plants known as diatoms. The name diatomaceous earth, therefore, is to be preferred to others such as trade names, inappropriate terms, or names correctly applied to some other product. The following names should, therefore, not be used for diatomaceous earth,-- kieselguhr, infusorial earth, diatomite, celite, moler, bergnehl, English rottenstone, tripoli, tripolite, fossil earth, desmid earth, white peat, tellurine, randanite, ceyssatite, or any trade name.FORMATIONDiatoms live in practically all kinds of water, fresh or salt, hot or cold, still or running and under different conditions of depth and pressure. These minute plants assimilate inorganic salts from their environment and produce skeletons of silica much as mollusks secrete lime and form their Shalls. When the diatoms die they settle to the bottom together with anything else which may be present, such as sand, clay or volcanic ash. The organic matter gradually disappears leaving the silicious skeletons of the diatoms which, with impurities, make up the deposits of diatomaceous earth. These deposits which are still being foamed at the present time and which were produced throughout very different epochs, were more prolifically formed in the Tertiary, so that the thickest beds so far discovered are of that Age."

Since mid-July, most domestic producers have been marketing 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot at 53-57 cents per pound. Dealers in the United States have recently quoted ingot at 52.3-52.8 cents. On October 2, London Metal Exchange will trade aluminum, selling contracts on a cash and a 3-month basis. New York dealers were quoting August ingot at 52.3 52.8 cents. The Bonneville Power Administration announced that, effective December 20. 1978, electric power rates charged primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest would be increased The increase (equivalent to about 4 cents per pound of aluminum produced) will raise the average rate to about 8.7 mills per kw-hr compared to 3.2 mills per kw-hr.

This paper is one of r series published by the Bureau of Mines dealing with the mineral resources of western South Dakota. The mining of pegmatite minerals is described mainly from the standpoint of the feldspar industry, as most of the other .pegmatite minerals produced are recovered as byproducts from the mining of feldspar. Feldspar is shipped from the Black Hills by three companies, all operating in the southern Hills. Because the pegmatites of the northern Hills, represented by tae Tinton area, have been described in other papers3/ of this series, the present paper is confined to the pegmatite dikes of the southern Black Hills. Emphasis is placed upon the current activity in pegmatite mining; little attention is given to the history of many famous mines in the district, and information concerning them may be obtained by consulting resorts cited in the bibliography. The field work was carried on from July 28 to October 15, 1938. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The geology of the Black Hills has been studied almost continuously during the last half century. A wealth of literature has attempted to explain the geology and mineralogy of the pegmatite dikes of this region. That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

Problems connected with the incidence, effects, determination, and control of dusts are still much before the public, although more information is available to the layman than when Bulletin 400, of which this publication is a revision,5 was issued in 1937. Bulletin 400 attempted to assemble information in convenient form on various phases of the dust problem, largely in the mining and allied industries. This revision includes data that have accumulated since 1937 and some that appeared previous thereto but were not available to the authors at that time. The literature on this subject is so voluminous that no attempt has been made to include all published material or all types of dust diseases, but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject.

INTRODUCTION At the Federal Bureau of Mines laboratory, Norris, Tenn., X-ray diffraction crystallography using tubes with copper targets revealed a need for a handy reference for the quadratic functions of copper radiation. For more than 10 years coke-oven technologists have been investigating the expanding properties of coal on a scale larger than that afforded by laboratory test tubes. Koppers 4/ was among the first to realize that coals can not be differentiated satisfactorily with respect to expansion in coke ovens by the simpler test-tube methods; in his first method 80 grains of fine coal were coked in a cylinder heated from the bottom, so that the zone of fusion (plastic layer) advanced from the bottom to the top. The scale of test was too small; it has been modified by other investigators, but without significant improvement in practical application of the results. Somewhat later Koppers and Jendne 5/ experimented with a small-scale coke even, one wall of which was movable, in which the layer-coking in a coke oven could be simulated closely. This oven was heated from both sides. Their results with this oven showed a peak in the time-pressure curves near the end of the coking, period when the two plastic layers, advancing from opposite walls, meet. They also found that although the smaller oven was heated from one side only and did not show the Pressure peak characteristic of two-sided heating, it still gave results entirely too high. Russell built an oven similar to the movable-wall oven of Koppers and Jenkner and compared results obtained in it on Beckley expanding coal with these obtained on the some coal in the Altieri 7/ small-scale apparatus. Both tests were conducted at the same constant pressure, but heating was from two sides in Russell's oven and from one side in the Altieri tester. Russell found that the two types of test gave comparable results under constant pressure conditions even though the heating procedures were quite different. He showed later, however, that a "borderline" coal 8/ that contracted in the Altieri tester at constant pressure developed a peak pressure of 4 pounds per square inch in the movable-wall oven heated from both sides at constant volume. He concluded from this that testing at constant volume gave results more accurately indicative of dangerous expansion tendencies than those at constant pressure. He also found that heating from both sides in this oven gave higher pressure than heating from one side only.

Many accidents rightly classifiable as electrically caused are not so classified for the reason that in numerous accidents the part that electricity played in causing the fatality is only suspected. For instance, a workman might receive a shock that would cause him to lose his balance and fall beneath a trip of cars; if no one saw the first part of the accident, the cause undoubtedly would be charged to "haulage." This paper covers a brief study of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents. The first usually result from direct contact with the electrical circuit or electrical apparatus; the second more often are the result of arcing or flashing due to handling defective apparatus or making repairs on "live" equipment or circuits. It is hoped that helpful suggestions may be offered for minimizing accidents of these two classes.

During the past few years, since flotation has become the paramount treatment method for most all kinds of ores, the Bureau has gathered the data on consumption of reagents used in the flotation treatment. The first report was issued in 1916. A brief review of such reports snows the progress made in the art of flotation, and each year brings forth the development of new reagent a or combinations of reagents that seem sure to survive, but research and progress spell their defeat, if not by entire elimination, at least subjects them to considerable modification.
