These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

"One of the most successful commercial methods of extracting gold from ores involves solubilizing gold as a gold cyanide complex, followed by adsorption of the complex onto activated carbon. The gold cyanide is subsequently eluted from the carbon to produce a concentrated gold solution suitable for electrowinning to recover the precious metals. Stripped carbon is treated in a kiln under a flowing steam atmosphere to reactivate its surface, allowing it to be reused. The aim of this study was to investigate the gold elution using a mixture of sodium hydroxide and isopropyl alcohol in both batch and continuous tests, with the eluates being electrowon on carbon foam cathodes. The effects of various factors, including alcohol content and sodium cyanide addition were studied. The addition of alcohol considerably improved gold elution kinetics, while the presence of sodium cyanide did not have a significant impact on either elution efficiency or kinetics. In all cases, efficient electrolysis was shown to be an important factor in maintaining effective carbon circuit operation.INTRODUCTION Gold dissolved as Au(CN)2- complex during cyanidation is recovered either by cementation with zinc powder, also known as the Merrill-Crowe process, or by adsorption into activated carbon through Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) or Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) processes. Activated carbon loaded with gold is then eluted and gold is subsequently recovered by electrochemical methods. Conventional elution processes such as atmospheric and pressurized Zadra processes, involve stripping with a cyanide (0.1–0.2% NaCN) and sodium hydroxide solution (1–2% NaOH) at high temperature (90–140°C) over long elution times of 8 to 72 hours. In the Anglo American Research Laboratories (ARL) elution process, the acid-washed loaded carbon is pretreated with a strong sodium cyanide and sodium hydroxide solution (1–5% NaCN and 1–2% NaOH), followed by elution with water at 110–130°C. Solvent-assisted elution processes have also been reported, such methods use varying concentrations of alcohols (methanol, ethanol and isopropanol), ketones, or glycols to enhance atmospheric elutions at temperatures up to 95°C (Muir et al., 1985; Ubaldini et al., 2006; Espiell et al., 2008; Soleimani & Kaghazchi, 2008). The present work investigates the efficiency of isopropanol in the gold elution process, as well as the methodology of evaluating gold stripping processes in the lab setting"

"Les avantages de l'électricitéLe thème de la réunion 1982 de l'ICM District No. 2: "" Le défi des années 80 pour l'industrie minière de la Côte-Nord"" exprime trè s bien la réalité . En effet, la récession économique qui touche présentement tout le monde industrialisé, frappe de façon particulièrement sévère le marché du fer et de l'acier. Il est donc primordial pour les industries minières de la CôteNord de minimiser leurs coûts de production. Comme on sait, une bonne part des coûts de production est directement reliée à la consommation d'énergie.Si on retourne en arrière de quelques années, les prix des produits pétroliers étaient beaucoup moins élevé s que maintenant . Par exemple: A Philadelphie, en janvier 1930, le prix de l'huile no. 6 (bunker C) était de 1.22$ le baril. En 1940, le prix mondial du pétrole brut se situait aux environs de 1.80$ le baril et augmentait très lentement jusqu'en 1973. A la mi-octobre 1973, l'organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (O.P.E.P.) surprend le reste du monde en annonçant que le prix du brut grimpe à S.12$ le baril. .. on connaît la suite.On sait qu'au point de vue énergétique, le nord du Québec est l'une des régions les plus avantagées au monde. Malgré le fait que notre climat soit plutôt défavorable, nous sommes assurés d'une alimentation électrique à toute fin pratique éternelle, contrairement aux autres régions du globe. En effet, l' hydro-électricité ne représente que 2.S070 de toute l'électricité produite dans le monde.Une bonne partie de l'énergie consommée dans les industries minières de la Côte-Nord est utilisée pour produire la vapeur. Or, il y a plusieurs avantages à produire de la vapeur à partir de l'électricité:1. Le prix d'achat d'une chaudière électrique peut être moins de la moitié de celui d'une chaudière à carburant fo ssile.2. Le prix de l'électricité est plus bas que celu i des autres sources d'énergie disponibles dans notre région.3. Hydro-Québec offre un programme spéci al de subventions et un prix garanti de l'électricité, inférieur de 10070 à celui de tout autre combustible (1982).4. Souvent il est possible d'utiliser l'énergie hors pointe à un coût minime.S. L'espace requis pour un chaudière électrique est beaucoup moindre. Par exemple: une chaudière d'une capacité de 120000 Ibs/hre ne demande que SO pi? de plancher, c'est-à-dire un cercle de 8 pieds de diamètre comparativement à environ 600 à 700 pi2 pour une chaudière au ma zout.6. Aucun espace n'est requis pour l'entreposage du carburant.7. Aucun espace n'est requis pour la cheminée.8. Il n' y a que très peu de pièce s mécaniques, donc ces chaudières demandent très peu d 'entretien .9. Les chaudières électriques ne génèrent aucune pollution, donc on n'a pas besoin d'équipement coûteux de contrôle de la pollution.10. Ces chaudières sont extrêmement rapides. En effet, on peut passer de zéro à la production maximum en moins d'une heure si la chaudière est froide et en quelques secondes seulement si la chaudière est à sa température d'opération.11. L'efficacité de ces appareils est au moins de 9S% par rapport à 80-8S% pour les chaudières au ma zout. De plus, cette efficacité demeure la même quel que soit le niveau de production de la chaudière. Il faut faire attention ici: les manufacturiers proposent des rendements de 99% et plus, mais ceci ne tient compte que des pertes de chaleur à travers l'enveloppe, et de l'énergie nécessaire au fonctionnement de la pompe de circulation. Il faut ajouter à cela l'énergie perdue à cause de la vidange qui varie selon le type de chaudière et selon la qualité de l'eau d'alimentation.12. Ajoutons simplement que ces appareils sont très facile à opérer du fait qu'il n'y a aucun système complexe à manipuler.Cependant, il y a un inconvénient non négligeable à utiliser l'électricité comme source d'énergie: comme on ne peut pas emmagasiner l'énergie électrique, nous sommes à la merci du fournisseur."

As electronic technology continues to evolve there is a growing need to develop processes which recover valuable material from antiquated technology. This need follows from the environmental challenges associated with the recovery of raw materials and fast growing generation of electronic waste. Although present in small quantities in electronic devices, the availability of raw materials such as rare earths and precious metals becomes critical for the production of high tech electronic devices and the development of green technologies (i.e. wind turbines, electric motors, and solar panels). Therefore, the proper recycling and processing of electronic waste presents an opportunity to stabilize the market of critical materials, providing a proper disposal and treatment of a hazardous waste stream. This paper describes the development and techno-economic assessment of a comprehensive process for the recovery of value and critical materials from electronic waste. This hydrometallurgical scheme aims to selectively recover several value streams (base metals, precious metals, and rare earths) present in electronic waste. The economic feasibility for the recovery of rare earths from electronic waste is mostly driven by the efficient recovery of precious metals, such as Au and Pd (ca. 80 % of the total recoverable value). Rare earth elements contained in magnets (speakers, vibrators, and hard disk storage) can be recovered as a mixture of rare earth oxides which can later be reduced to the production of new magnets.

In situ bulk density of coal is a variable applied to various aspects of coal resource evaluation, such as compositing ply analyses of coal attributes that are expressed on a weight per cent basis, and determining tonnages from volume estimates. Its value is a function of composition and porosity of the in situ material. When densities of ash-free coal, ash and water are fixed, in situ bulk density of a coaly mix can be expressed as a function of proportionate weight of ash in the mix. Correlations between in situ bulk densities and weight per cent ash contents of coaly mixes have been estimated for four general rank classes of coal (low medium volatile bituminous, high volatile bituminous, subbituminous, and lignitic).

In the this study, surface segregation of Mg and Ca with Mg addition range from 5 to 10wt% in Al-Mg alloys with Mg+Al2Ca master alloy and its effect on the oxidation resistance were investigated. The addition of Mg+Al2Ca master alloy as the Mg alloying element led to the surface enrichment of Mg and Ca during high temperature oxidation. As a result of the oxidation test by TGA, the oxidation resistance of all the examined alloys was significantly improved with increasing Al2Ca content. The weight change of Al2Ca added Al-5Mg and Al-7.5Mg alloys indicated the complete oxidation resistance during the whole oxidation test time, while a slight weight increase was shown in the case of Al-Mg alloys even with Al2Ca addition. The improvement of the oxidation resistance in Al2Ca added alloys may be attributed to the formation of the protective oxide layer mixed with CaO and MgO on the surface.

"In the present research, a deposited brown coal fly ash was used as raw material for geopolymer. The reactivity of the fly ash was altered using mechanical activation, which is one of the promising methods to improve bulk and surface reactivity. The mechanical activation experiments were carried out in a high energy density mill using 5 m/s circumferential speed, and various residence times (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 60 min). The effect of mechanical activation on particle size distribution was measured by a laser particle size analyzer and structural changes using FT-IR. Geopolymer samples were prepared from mechanically activated fly ash with an alkali solution. The progress of geopolymerisation was monitored using an Isothermal Conduction Calorimeter. The heat flow curve obtained indicated that reactions were more prominent and started much earlier in the mechanically activated samples. This observation is further supported by the compressive strength results which also improved in geopolymers using mechanically activated fly ash. Based on the obtained results, it can be inferred that mechanical activation is a possible way to enhance the reactivity of fly ash and consequently properties of resulting geopolymers.INTRODUCTIONCoal fired power plants generate fly ash and slag in huge amount worldwide, about 780 million tons/year (Heidrich et al. 2013). Due to the relatively low utilization rate, enormous quantities of these wastes are landfilled in ponds. The fly ash is the finest grained particle fraction of the solid ash, which is transported with flue gas, and removed by electrostatic or bag filters. The fly ash has pozzolanic activity, it does not react with water, but in the presence of calcium hydroxide solution hardens and solidifies, producing a reaction product practically insoluble in water (Opoczky, 2001). The most important property of the fly ash regarding geopolymerization is its reactivity, which depends on the chemical and phase composition, the dispersity (specific surface area, particle size distribution), and the morphology of the fly ash particles, and determined by the physical properties and chemical composition of the fly ash. Geopolymers concerning their chemical structure are polysialates, where the sialate (silicon-oxoaluminate) network is built up from the bonds of Si-oxide and Al-oxide by sharing oxygen atoms (Davidovits, 1988)."

"A new exploration procedure is proposed for volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Abitibi belt. ""Samples"" of acidic volcanic rocks (Si02 > 60%) were compiled from the literature. From the 574 samples collected, 322 were used in each of a number of experiments. Forward inclusion linear discriminant analysis performed on the untransformed geochemical data shows a general depletion in Na20 and CaO along with an enrichment in MgO for a ""proximal"" group of samples relative to a ""distal"" one. The percentage of misclassified samples reaches 20% to 30%, but test sets shows good stability.The exploration procedure was applied to the Normetal deposit, where the authors took 160 samples during the summer of 1977. It quickly leads to the definition of targets for more detailed exploration together with a good recognition of the old known deposit.IntroductionVolcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Abitibi belt (Quebec) are mainly found in rhyolites or acidic pyroclastics in the uppermost portion of a calc-alkaline volcanic series (Descarreaux, 1972). The deposits are thought to have formed syngenetically by the action of volcanic hydrothermal exhalations during the waning episode of a felsic volcanic cycle (De Rosen Spence, 1976). Alteration pipes of disseminated sulphides are commonly present. Metal deposition from hot springs, initiating convection cells in a submarine environment, may have been the dominant process in ore formation (De Rosen Spence, 1976)."

"In Cu-Mo deposits it is usual to find considerable amounts of pyrite (FeS2). When processing this kind of ore by flotation, pyrite is rejected using lime to increase the pH to alkaline conditions (pH ~10.5). In the case of using seawater without pre-processing, i.e., raw seawater, the lime consumption increases dramatically and the recovery of molybdenite drops due to the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide on its surface. In order to avoid these negative effects, alternative ways of depressing pyrite should be considered.The current work introduces the use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, bacteria commonly used in bioleaching, as an alternative to depress pyrite in seawater flotation. The paper presents the results of biodepression in three systems: fresh water, water with added sodium chloride at 35 g/L (which corresponds to the salt concentration in seawater ) and seawater. The results show that it is possible to bio-depress pyrite with A. ferrooxidans in natural seawater pH (7.8-8.2). A similar behaviour is observed when running the experiments in fresh water, and in water with sodium chloride added.INTRODUCTIONWater is a scarce but essential resource for human development. The main reason for this scarcity is that, although 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water, only 3% of the total is fresh water and an important part of this water is frozen, so that only 1% of fresh surface water can be used for human activities. In Chile, most of the mining activity is concentrated in the north of the country, located in the Atacama Desert, considered the world's driest desert. That is why some mining companies have chosen to use seawater in their processes. For example, Esperanza (Antofagasta Minerals), and Sierra Gorda (KGHM International) use raw seawater in their flotation processes."

"Electrodeposition processes are widely used in the metallurgical industry to produce, extract and refine metals from various feed materials. However, raw materials used to provide non-ferrous metals often contain high amounts of iron. In the presence of iron, while metals are plated at the cathode, electrowinning processes produce corrosive and highly oxidative ferric ions at the anode that are harmful for the process sustainability. In fact, these ferric ions cause dramatic current efficiency loss, induce high maintenance expenditures to limit the corrosion of devices and it results in the formation of impure and dendritic deposits on the cathode. Consequently, the management of iron in electrodeposition process became a major issue in non-ferrous metals production. Actually, numerous methods have been developed to limit the ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte or, at least, to limit its harmful effect. Many methods aim to limit the iron(III) concentration in the electrolyte, generally by coupling electrowinning to extraction process such as solvent extraction (SX) (Bender & Emmerich, 2015), ion exchange (IX) (Gula, Dreisinger, & Horwitz, 1996) or cementation (Kust, 1979) processes to remove ferric ions. Other routes consist of (i) using the ferric ions oxidant properties to leach raw materials, either directly in the electrolytic cell (Fanta & Tributsch, 1975) or through a secondary circuit (Cain, 1950), or (ii) reducing ferric ions through periodic reversal of direct current to enhance the formation of Fe2+ (Loutfy & Bharucha, 1980). On the other side of the spectrum, papers discuss methods to valorize the iron from by-products of the non-ferrous metal industry, that generates vast quantities of iron containing wastes (A. Agrawal, Sahu, & Pandey, 2004). Many studies on iron electroplating and electrolytic iron production from ores have been carried out (Cain, 1950; Mostad, Rolseth, & Thonstad, 2008), but very few have been conducted on waste or by-products. Therefore, we propose to build on the previous literature review to develop a process for the production of electrolytic iron from by-products.INTRODUCTIONNon-ferrous metals and their alloys are used in a large variety of applications. Aluminum and titanium are used for their strength, light weight and corrosion resistant properties in structural applications. Copper has been used in various applications requiring high thermal and electrical conductivity, as kitchen products and electrical wires. Nickel and zinc are commonly used as plating materials; nickel offers a wide range of working temperature and zinc is used for steel plating. Gold, silver, and platinum group metals are used in electrical/electronic applications, jewelry and chemistry as catalysts."

A new technology is available to the Ni mining and remediation community to “phytomine” Ni from mineralized or contaminated soils using rare plants which hyperaccumulate Ni to over 1% of shoot dry matter. Research has identified useful plant species, and even bred improved cultivars of Alyssum murale and Alyssum corsicum for commercial phytomining in temperate regions. All agronomic practices (fertilization, soil amendments, planting and harvest methods) needed for economic phytomining were identified to attain high yields and high Ni concentration in the biomass. In tropical regions, other species are available such as Phyllanthus which accumulate over 1% Ni in dry shoots. These species are perennial so they regrow after annual cutting to harvest biomass. Expiration of our patents on the technology opens the opportunity for other organizations which control Ni rich natural soils or contaminated soils requiring remediation to commercialize the technologies. Inexpensive methods to remediate/revitalize Ni contaminated phytotoxic soils using agronomic approaches have also been developed and demonstrated at Port Colborne, Ontario, but adoption is delayed until formal agreements with government are completed. These new simple remediation and profitable phytomining technologies can obtain Ni from soils which contain Ni well below levels considered economic for current mining technologies, and the plants biopurify the Ni so it is easy to recover Ni metal from plant ash by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical technologies. Although increasing pH decreases the solubility of Ni in all soils, raising pH increases Ni accumulation by Alyssum species. Hence usual chemical extraction methods for phytoavailable soil metals such as the DTPA- or NH4-OAc-extraction cannot predict Ni accumulation by Alyssum species.

Acid mist is the undesired result of copper electro-winning (EW) process, generating a contaminated and hazardous environment in the working areas, as well as promoting high corrosion conditions for structures and equipment in the EW tank-house due to the buoyancy of sulfuric acid in aerosol form. Likewise, organic entrainments that occasionally occur in this process contaminate the cathodes, as well as increasing the risk of fire. LateralVex® and LateralFlow® are technologies that effectively and efficiently solve these problems, without affecting the usual activities of the operators, thus presenting a significant distinction with respect to other technologies that seek to solve these problems. Minera Antucoya, an AMSA group company, which produces 80,000 tons of electrolytic Cu per year, decided to install both technologies for its EW tank-house, LateralVex® in commercial cells and LateralFlow® in scavenger cells to keep both the acid mist and the organic entrainments under control. This paper presents the effects of applying these technologies in Minera Antucoya’s electro-winning plant, the challenges addressed, the difficulties encountered, the problems and opportunities that their implementation involved, as well as the surprising results obtained at the time of measuring the acid mist— less than one hundred’s part of the Allowed Weighted Limit—in samples taken with the plant operating at maximum current capacity. Additionally, the paper includes some of the improvements identified during the period, more than 3 years, in which these technologies have been in operation in Minera Antucoya. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning is the most used electro-chemical process in the hydrometallurgical industry for the recovery of highly pure metallic copper as its final product, which is formed in previous stages in an aqueous medium that goes through a selective process using organic solvents to separate impurities and concentrate the metal in a sulfuric acid solution. In the last stage, this solution goes through a process in which high- density current at a low voltage is applied, so that the metal in the solution will deposit in solid state on a plate, usually a stainless-steel plate. This last process involves the generation of other sub-products due to the electro-chemical dissociation of the electrolyte’s components, or to the addition of chemical additives, or due to specific physical conditions or lack of controls during the operation.

"In October of 1980, Fording's 15 000-ton capacity clean coal silo was put into operation. The silo was unique in that it was designed to allow the mass flow of material, coupled with a sophisticated computer-controlled dynamic loadout/weighing system.On May 1, 1982, an explosion, attributed to a methane buildup, devastated the top of the silo. .As a contingent plan to minimize the effect of the production loss the conveyance to the silo top was reconstructed and the silo' was back in operation by mid-June 1982, although the silo top was left open to prevent further methane buildup. As dust emissions occurred during loading ofthe silo, an extensive study was undertaken to establish dust control for the silo, while at the same time providing methane detection and control.The study, conducted for Fording by the Cambrian Engineering Group of Calgary, involved an extensive search and investigation of existing coal silos. The study concluded that there IS no universally accepted method of controlling methane emissions in coal silos.The study also produced a unique conceptual design for handling methane, while at the same time, protecting the environment . Fording's Clean Coal SiloThe silo, located at Fording Coal's Fording River metallurgical coal operation, is utilized for the storage and load out of cleaned thermally-dried metallurgical coal.The silo was constructed in 1979 and 1980 to reduce unit train loadout times and to facilitate the handling of “special shipments"" of coal. The silo went into operation in October 1980, under manual control and utilized computerized, automated loading by February 198I.The silo is 21 m in diameter and 76 m high, with a nominal capacity of IS 000 live tonnes. The coal storage portion of the silo is 21 m in diameter and 48 m high, utilizing 2 steep-angled hopper outlets allowing mass flow of the stored coal during train loading. Each hopper has a control gate and a discharge chute, one chute for bulk loading, the other for trim loading of coal into the rail cars."

"In recent years, the major effort in detonator development has been concentrated on ""non-electric"" systems. Existing types all involve some form of explosive reaction to transfer ignition energy from outside the borehole to the pyrotechnic delay element contained within the detonator. These may be based on low-energy detonating cords having grained or plasticized explosive cores, shock tube energy transmission principals and explosive gas ignition systems. Each has properties of internal and external effects not present in electric conductors.The MAGNADET System introduces transformer coupling into electric blasting circuits. Safety features with respect to current leakage, stray currents of AC or DC source, electrostatic energy and radio-frequency radiation are comparable to ""non-electric"" systems, with advantages in simplicity, speed of hook-up and range of application.The transformer device used is a small ferrite ring or toroid which is an integral part of each specialized detonator. The detonator legwires form the secondary side of the transformer winding. The primary side is a single wire loop common to all units within the circuit. Power is supplied from a frequency-tuned portable exploder with unique circuit-sensing features.The MAGNADET System is expected to have particular application to shaft sinking, raising and tunnelling where the protective features as well as speed and efficiency are critical factors. Applications of the 'MAGNA' booster in quarries, open pits and longhole deck charges offer control over vibration problems and elimination of surface noise.IntroductionFor many years, electric detonators and electric blasting systems dominated surface and underground applications where controlled delay times were required. Control over the instant of detonation by blasting machines or power-line switches is the major safety feature.Electrical energy exists in many forms. It may originate from many sources. Electrical energy can be difficult to contain. It may enter or escape through a variety of conductive paths. It may fluctuate, concentrate or dissipate to pose a most elusive potential hazard."

"A new method for the hydrometalfurgical treatment of refractory gold arsenosulphide concentrates is presented. Themethod involves a combination of' finegrinding, intensive agitation, flotation, and cyanidation, and consists of leaching of -10u pyrite and arsenopyrite particles in alkaline solution under intensive agitation without the application of costly high-pressure and roasting techniques. Consistent extractions of gold, in excess of 96%, are achieved.IntroductionConventional methods of alkaline leaching of gold arsenosulphide concentrates in an autoclave» and under electrochemical oxidation( 2) require expensive equipment as well as high-cost energy and reagents. In other cases, processing of gold concentrates inelude: ultra-fme grinding, calcination at 200°C to 250°C with the addition of an oxidant (NH4NOJ followed by alkaline leaching of the resulting calcine with hydrogen peroxide, the latter being a complicated method yielding poor extractions of gold (89% to 90%). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical method is described for processing refractory gold arsenosulphide concentrates in which alkaline leaching is followed by cyanidation of the residue."

"Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Many excellent reviews have been published e.g. Dunn et al. (2013), summarising the options considered and where they have been applied commercially."

"An often over-looked component in the assessed value of a mining property is the value derived from the ability of the operator to limit financial losses during adverse economic times (i.e. low market price, high energy prices, etc.) by suspending operations. Overlooking the value of this type of operating flexibility when conducting mine investment analysis may negatively bias the risk profile for the investment by over estimating the investment's downside potential, thereby effectively undervaluing the investment. This paper illustrates the nature of the value of operating flexibility and discusses how it may be explicitly quantified within the context of conducting stochastic mine investment analysis. IntroductionMining properties are evaluated using an array of techniques ranging from simplistic non-discounted payback calculation s to sophisticated, discounted-stochastic simulation. Stochastic simulation analysis is perhaps the most robust mine investment analysis technique as it not only provides an estimate of the expected value of the property, but also quantifies the associated risks (for examples of stochastic mine investment analysis, see: Billingsley and Yaychuk, 1986; Gentry and O'Neil, 1984; Munro, 1977; or Harris, 1970).The quantification of risk is important as it provides the necessary yardstick required to allocate the corporation's resources efficiently. Resources are said to be allocated efficiently when the corporation's expected long-term financial reward is maximized while at the same time minimizing its risk (see Hertz, 1968; or Markowitz, 1952 for in depth discussions on efficiency as it relates to investment policy). The efficient allocation of resources should be the objective of any rational corporation. Therefore, rational corporations should employ stochastic evaluation techniques when screening their investments."

"The Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation established a lead-zinc mine and concentrating plant at Faro in Yukon Territory in 1969. Following some 12 years of continuous operation from a single pit adjacent to the concentrator, the company decided to expand operations into two additional areas on the Vangorda Plateau. The two new deposits, known as Grum and Vangorda, are located some 15 kilometres from the existing concentrator.Confirmation of mining feasibility was followed by determination of the most practical and economical method of transporting the raw ore from the new mine sites to the existing concentrator. This analysis was carried out in two phases. The first phase reviewed the feasibility of alternative transportation systems on an 'order-of-magnitude' cost basis. This work identified systems worthy of more detailed examination. The second phase examined the preferred alternatives in greater detail.Initially, operating principles and parameters were established and catalogued. Then, based on these criteria, complete systems were developed utilizing alternative modes of transportation . In the overview analysis, some transportation modes were judged impractical and discarded, 'order-o f-magnitude' costs were developed for other systems and the most costly were eliminated . In the detailed study, the favourable systems were examined in depth which required development of accurate capital and operating costs, consideration of environ- mental impacts and an assessment of intangibles associated with the operation of a new development."
