During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. Environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) have become a defining feature in the marketplace to differentiate preferred investments. With the sustainability commitment and reporting landscape anticipated to evolve exponentially, it is now imperative to rapidly develop the approach taken by mineral companies to adequately identify and address ESG risks and opportunities in the reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR). MRMR cannot be effectively reported as technically and financially assured and realistically executable, if ESG is not integrated into the strategy, business model, input assumptions and process that defines and drives robust MRMR public reporting. Regulatory reporting codes across the globe are presently in various stages of being updated and modified to ensure ESG factors are appropriately covered as a key part of diligent and transparent disclosure. Security exchanges are making it clear that companies must not omit ESG risks from reports to investors. This paper discusses associated challenges for MRMR reporting and suggests avenues for improvement. Key themes include: the importance of procedure rather than prescription and checklists; how ESG criteria impact Modifying Factors and determination of Reasonable Prospects for Economic Extraction (RPEE); the need for financial models to account for material ESG commitments; the uniqueness of each mineral asset; the need for education, upskilling and accreditation of both ESG experts about MRMR reporting and equally Competent Persons in ESG matters; and the need for clear and balanced reports that meet the needs of end users. (RPEE is adopted here for simplicity and consistency, recognising that some reporting codes still include ‘Eventual’ in the term (ie RPEEE). Whilst RPEE and RPEEE are subtly different the intent is to point to the process of assessing ESG factors in determining reasonable prospects.) The principles of transparency, materiality and competence remain paramount when considering the impact of ESG matters on MRMR reporting, and this necessitates an inclusive, cohesive, and integrated approach to assessing ESG issues to ensure the necessary expertise and diligence is applied.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30 km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a seven kilometre section in the vicinity of the Macraes  township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20¦) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, 'lode schists' and quartz-vein stockworks. Mine geology and grade control activities are designed to ensure accurate definition of ore and waste as well as the accurate prediction of ore grade. Grade control involves an integrated process of blast hole sampling, geological mapping and geostatistical modelling. Geological mapping is carried out post blasting by means of excavating trenches across are zones defined by assay data. Conditional Simulation is used to model raw assay data to define ore-waste contacts and estimate ore block grade, although, geologically defined contacts have precedence. Low angle ore zones impart a wedge shaped geometry to many ore blocks. These ore blocks are bounded by contacts that can be selectively mined to, thereby reducing misallocation of ore and minimising grade dilution.

Samples weighing O· 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180°C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. An electrochemical study of the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solution shows that the dissolution rate is determined by the nature of the surface. A passive film (probably a basic cyanide) formed at -0·6 V vs a saturated calomel electrode inhibits both the anodic dissolution of gold and the cathodic reduction of oxygen. Thallium has an "activating" effect on these reaction mechanisms.INTRODUCTIONIn general the dissolution rate of a solid in a liquid is studied by weight loss measurements or analysis of the solution at known time intervals. However, if the solid is a metallic conductor, on which a redox reaction can occur at the metal-solution interface, it can be studied by electrochemical techniques. Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

The monosaccharides glucose, galactose and arabinose, and the polyols glycerol and mannitol (0.1 Ufo WIV) supported pure and mixed culture heterotrophic bacterial manganese leaching of solid pyrolusite (MnO2, 2% W/V) to yield 14-38 mg/litre manganous ion in 3 days from a simple mineral salts media at 30°C. Supplementation of pure bacterial isolates growing on glucose with soluble intracellular photosynthate from freshwater algae (0.07 g/l carbohydrate) and marine algae (0.11 g/l) led to an improvement in Mn++ yields of 24 and 100 per cent respectively. Extracellular products of the freshwater algae (0.3 g/l carbohydrate) boosted recoveries by 57 per cent.
