On the face of it this is an easily answered question. Modern technology and life as we know it today would be impossible without industrial minerals and the responsible utilisation of mineral resources is essential for the economic wellbeing of the nation. The quarrying industry supplies a high percentage of the industrial minerals used in New Zealand and our role therefore, is to ensure a constant supply of high quality roading and concrete aggregates so that society and the community as a whole can develop. We must do this in a manner which causes the least possible disruption to members of the community, which efficiently utilises all the valuable resources, which causes as little pollution as possible and last but by no means least, creates realistic profit for the operator. It is only by achieving a reasonable profit that we are able to continue in business and therefore play our part in the development of the country. Unfortunately, quarries have a poor image and are not generally popular, as on the whole, they are noisy, dirty and dusty and attract large trucks which create traffic problems. Judging by the amount of restrictive legislation with which we have to comply today, not even government or the local authorities want quarries which presents the industry with some serious problems, some of which will be outlined in this paper.

Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

Since the of Bergstrand's Geo-dimeter in 1946, and Wadley's Tellurometer in 1956, there have been numerous Electromagnetic Distance Measurement (EDM) instruments produced throughout the world by a variety of companies.This form of measurement has not merely replaced other methods of measurement, but has caused considerable change of emphasis in survey techniques. Major control surveys are now being accomplished using trilateration instead of triangulation. The surveying of open cuts or engineering work may be done in a fraction of the time and, in the majority of cases, to a greater degree of accuracy than with older methods.It is surprising that with this new tech-nology and development of EDM equipment which is compact, easy to use and no longer so expen-sive, no advance has been made in underground surveying. If we look at equipment being used by the majority of mining companies, we see that there have been very few changes since the Second World War. Very little research has been carried out to enable the surveyor to do his work more easily in conditions which, at the very least. are hazardous.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Methods of measuring the frictional properties of rock surfaces, both by direct sliding and in triaxial apparatus, are described. It was found that for some rocks the coefficient of friction remains reasonably constant as sliding is continued but for others it increases considerably.The effect of fluid pressure in the surface of sliding was found in all cases to be adequately represented by the effective stress criterion. Some observations on sliding on two conjugate planes showed that the motion on the two planes may be very different, depending on small differences in the constraints.The coefficients of friction of natural open joints in bore core were found to lie in the comparatively narrow range 0.32 to O.68 although surface coatings were very diverse.A set of diagrams on the equal area projection is given which enables a rapid determination to be made of those planes on which sliding is possible in a given three-dimensional stress field. The influence of the intermediate principal stress on this is of considerable importance.

In current mining practices it is desirable to bring about a substantial increase in both rate of face advance and productivity, thus compelling the mine engineer to consider better and more productive ways of mining. Transportation plays a vital role in achieving improved productivity. This paper focuses on horizontal transportation systems. Horizontal transportation is defined from the shaft station area to the end of the stope cross-cut. Traditionally, horizontal transportation is inefficient in comparison to vertical transportation efficiencies and accounts for a high proportion of South African mine accidents. Thus, the role of horizontal transportation has been investigated in detail, as it offers the greatest chance for improvement. The purpose of the paper is to provide a best practice guideline for the design of horizontal underground transport systems. It is intended that the document be used by mine designers and planners as an aide memoir during the design process and benefit may well be gained from retrofit and reorganisation activity. The paper looks at transport systems suitable for deep level gold mining in South Africa and evaluates such items as management, scheduling, and haulage systems. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

Laboratory scale simulation experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Au(CN)Z- on activated carbon in the presence of organic plant contaminants is dependent on the particle size of the carbon. This observation suggests that fine carbon in a CIP contactor can protect coarse CIP carbon from fouling in a dirty CIP plant. A preliminary test of this concept was made using fine lignite coal as the organic scavenger in the presence of the CIP carbon Calgon GRC22 in an alkaline cyanide solution containing Teric 401, sodium ethyl xanthate and kerosene.

The dewetting kinetics between a small air-liquid interface and a silica (negatively charged in water) planar surface in solutions of dodecylammonium chloride (cationic surfactant) has been investigated using the Scheludko cell and digital high-speed video microscopy. The gas-liquid interface was created at the bottom of a small silica capillary of the cell and then was moved towards the silica planar surface. After the rupture of the liquid films between the interfaces, the expansion of the gas-liquid-solid three-phase contact (TPC) line was observed and recorded using a digital high-speed video microscope system, operating at 1000 frames per second. The surface tension of the surfactant solution was measured using the pendant drop technique. The equilibrium contact angle was measured using the Scheludko-Minings method with a silica micro-sphere. The TPC radius was determined as a function of time and compared against the available hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. The experimental data are described very well by the molecular-kinetic model for the TPC line motion. The hydrodynamic model is in agreement with the experimental data only for a short time after inception of the three-phase contact expansion.

Reduction of waste oxides from steel plant operations was investigated in a laboratory tube furnace at different temperatures and furnace atmospheres. The results have shown that the waste oxide pellets are reduced rapidly to very high degrees of metallization irrespective of the furnace atmosphere and that the reduction is simultaneously accompanied by significant low- ering of the original impurities. It is shown, for example, that treatment at 1000¦C for 30 min. can reduce the Zn content from 0.98% to 0.0065% and K and Na contents from 0.19% and 0.76% respectively, to less than 0.01%. However, pellet strength at 1000¦C was low but this, as shown in the paper, can be very significantly improved by treatment at 1250¦C. The results indicate that the reduction of the waste oxide pellets of this investigation proceeds almost certainly by a chain reaction mechanism and that this principle could be advantageously extended to the reduction of iron ores and other oxides in general.

Conventionally, a combined system consist- ing of a dry or wet pulverizer and kneading mac- hine is applied to the pretreatment of fine mat- erials for agglomeration, especially for pellet- izing. However, treatment cannot be expected to be satisfactory owing to the complexities of the process. A new process was developed to over- come the defects inherent in the conventional process. This new process treats certain fine materials having a moisture content somewhat lower than that suitable for pelletizing in a ball or rod mill. The mill is of special de- sign in which grinding and strong kneading are performed to give an extremely homogeneous ball- ing material with appropriate size distribution and pelletizing characteristics. The most serious problem in this process is the choking of sticky materials in the mill. A specially designed rubber lining was installed in the mill to overcome this trouble. This paper presents actual results from our iron ore pelletizing plant relating to the pelletization of other fine materials.

A continuous oxygen probe,incorporating a SIRO2 solid electrolyte oxygen sensor which measured the oxygen potential of a small volume of gas enclosed above the melt's surface,was constructed and tested. The oxygen potential of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron in the temperature range 1250 to 1300¦C were measured continuously for tests of up to 40 hours duration. Results were in agreement with those of previous workers using gas equilibration techniques. Tests on non- iron buffered slags proved unsuccessful due to corrosion of the probe's component in contact with the slag and an alternative material is Required.

The advancements achieved in rapid tunnelling in the 60's and 70's have been notable. It is unfortunate that shaft sinking has not enjoyed equivalent advances and there are many good reasons why this is so. Technical and commercial considerations have held back development and continue to do so despite the increasing urgency in the search for minerals and energy. By the careful selection of an appropri- ate project and the application of specialist engineering the Bdard took advantage of a unique opportunity to apply a mechanised shaft borer in field conditions.

The Kellogg slag fuming model is extended to apply to the Port Pirie plant which uses recuperative heating of secondary air. Exten- sive investigations of plant operations pro- vide parameters for use with the model, and verification that the resulting model provides simulation which is very close to actual plant performance. Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

Titrimetric studies have been carried out on the activated carbons Kintal 1105, Norit 2520 and Kuraray 2GA. Titration curves of the carbons before and after acid and water washing and gold loading indicate that the acid-base properties of the carbons are affected by both the method of treatment and also by the loading of gold. It is considered that the pKa values of the functional groups on the carbon surface are in the regions of 11, 7 and 3 respectively.

Each technological process can be reduced on the transport networks, and namely on the parametric networks and the non-parametric ones. The parametric networks are created by the piping, electrical cables or channels. The non-parametric network is created by the ways, suspended grooves, trackages and also by the belt conveyors or other conveyors for continuous material transport. If we reduce the technological process on transport networks, then, by the creation of these networks models and their mutual interconnection we obtain the model of the whole technological process. The model can be understood as the universal one, without exaggeration, because it is valid for any technological process. However, for us the mining production process is important what represents the mining and transport of raw materials under the support of the ensuring system. In this contribution one of the first attempt is described, and namely how to connect the parametric network which has been already worked out very properly with the non-parametric network what is presented in this contribution by the transport line of belt conveyors.
