A part of the results of dissection survey of Chiba No.1 blast furnace, Kawasaki Steel Corporat- ion, is presented. Distributions of coke size and of slag and metal holdup are shown in the region of the dropping zone. A similar relation to the irri- gated packed bed is obtained. The distribution of coke size, coke temperature and liquid holdup are measured in and around the raceway. The shape of raceway in the horizontal and vertical sections indicates that each raceway worked individually. Liquid flow in the dropping zone and around the raceway on the basis of holdup measurements is Discussed.

Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

Off-gas handling systems are a critical component of modern metallurgical furnaces and typically represent as much as 50 per cent of the total installed smelter capital cost. Inadequate off-gas system performance, due to insufficient exhaust flow or excess maintenance downtime, can present a serious process bottleneck and limit smelter production rate. Therefore, it is essential that the relevant performance issues are fully understood and considered in the design of these systems, particularly when combustibles produced within the furnace must be combusted or handled in the off-gas system. This paper examines the requirements, design issues, and conceptual design process for state-of-the-art postcombustion off-gas systems. The relevant design considerations of safety, environment, energy consumption, and maintenance are presented, and the relative importance of these key issues are compared and discussed. The benefits of using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling in the design process at the conceptual design stage are also demonstrated. Finally, the design basis and performance of a recent Hatch-engineered system currently in operation is evaluated.

Instantaneous outbursts have occurred at Metropolitan Colliery from the pick and shovel work of early days to the modern mining techniques of today. Developments have been the introduction of an emission index to measure the proneness of the coal to outbursts, drainage and destressing by large diameter holes, attempts at higher productivity by the introduction of pulsed infusion shotfiring and improvements in ventilation. The future plans and aims for the Colliery include prediction of outbursts, seam gas pre- drainage and longwall mining.

The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions I Bauerti The title of this paper is `Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions'. It is largely the result of a lack of imagination and a tight deadline. I was seeking a catchy title to convey the image of being 'here' and wanting to get `there', with `there' being a long way away and our being held 'here' by powerful gravitational forces. I tried `Solar Salt, Lunar Landings', but that implied we had already reached `there' when, on reflection, we had not. A colleague suggested 'Solar Salt, Luna Park' which is a fun park in Sydney and, I must admit, there was appeal in the image of having embarked on a wild roller coaster ride with stomach-wrenching twists and turns and the only reward being a pair of sweaty palms, and a feeling of nausea. That's sometimes how it feels when you launch into change. In the end I settled for the more sedate `Lunar Ambitions'. It contained that suggestion of hope and continual striving which are central to the idea of best practice. I will discuss our experiences in this area shortly, but I would firstly like to provide some background to our business. The salt industry is steeped in history and tradition. As one learned commentator observed, common salt is 'a substance seemingly too ordinary to think about, yet it is the oldest of man's raw materials and the basis of some of his newest inventions' (Multhauf, 1978). From ancient times, salt was recognised as a key necessity of life and it has played a role in the rise and fall of governments throughout history. The Romans recognised its importance when they gave their soldiers money regularly to purchase salt, hence our modern word 'salary'. Today, while culinary use remains important, the main consumer of salt is the chemical industry (Figure 1).

Accounting for borehole damage in analytical modelling of explosively generated stress waves is important for predicting the finer details of the stress wave patterns observed in the field. The classical Sharpe's [19421 concept of an effective borehole larger than the initial borehole diameter has been widely accepted to explain material damage around a borehole. A new analytical model based on dynamic compaction is advanced to predict far-field stress wave patterns. This model supports field data corresponding to reduced frequency of oscillations and increased damping. The present model recovers the earlier result when compaction around the borehole representing borehole damage is ignored.

Best practice mine sampling should provide a detailed quantification of all potential sources of error at each stage of sampling, sample preparation and assaying.Quality assurance (QA) should include testing for and quantifying potential sampling errors, and should be the basis for establishing ongoing sampling protocols, should set error limits and define quality control (QC) procedures. The correct selection of equipment to use in a mine is a problem which constantly faces the mining engineer. In some cases a wide choice of equipment with different operating characteristics is available. If this equipment is to be used to assist in moving the ore it may be possible to build a computer simulation model to predict how it will perform. Typical problems that lend themselves to this type of analysis are presented. The computer models are constructed using a recent form of the GPSS computer language, namely GPSS/PC for the personal computer. This language allows the programmer to construct models in a very short time and at a low cost. Of great importance is the easy way in which it is possible to change the models to answer any of the "what if?" questions the engineer may pose.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE CERTIFICATE TO ROBERT COLVILLE BRADSHAW, O.B.E.Today it is my privilege and pleasure to introduce to you, Robert Colville Bradshaw. O.B.E., the third New Zealander to be honoured with Honorary Membership of The Institute. Sir William Hudson and Mr. C. H. Benney were the others.Mr. Bradshaw has been an Affiliate Member of The Institute since the formation of the New Zealand Branch in 1966. Like his friend Matt Benney. Bob Bradshaw is an accountant by training. Last June he retired as senior partner of the firm of chartered accountants, now known as Wilkinson Wilberfoss, with which he served from January 1929.Mr. Bradshaw grew up in New Zealand attending the Terrace School in Wellington, the New Plymouth Boys' High School where he was a boarder, and completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the university now known as the Victoria University of Wellington. He is an elected Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and an Associate of the United Kingdom Institute of Cost and Works Accountants.

Relationships between lead blast furnace performance and the composition and size distribution of sinter were determined from analysis of lead blast furnace operating data. Sintering plant practice was subsequently modified and substantially improved furnace performance resulted.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

A combination of high virgin rock temperatures, deep workings and extensive utilisation of heavy diesel equipment has presented North Mine (A Division of North Broken Hill Limited) with challenging ventilation problems. These problems have been addressed in a variety of ways which include in the order of 6000 kM of underground refrigeration. The future of North Mine depends on the successful development and extraction of ore in excess of 1100 m below the shaft collar using mechanised cut and fill mining. The success of this will depend on the installation of a complex chilled water reticulation circuit in this area. This will involve planning and constriction of a number of large dams, installation of pups and turbines, and the successful commissioning of several large water to air heat exchangers.

The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.

Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.
