Discussion of the paper of C. H. MATHEWSON and ARTHUR PHILLIPS, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 1 to 50. ZAY JEFFRIES, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).¬The authors are to be congratulated for this interesting and valuable contribution. The paper as a whole shows very careful experimentation coupled with rare judgment in drawing conclusions. I have been working along similar lines for the last two years with other metals and alloys. In a short conversation with Dr. Mathewson about July 1, 1915, he mentioned the fact that different degrees of cold work greatly affect the temperature of recrystallization on annealing, Later I determined the recrystallization temperatures of iron, mild steel, and copper, with different degrees of cold work and found that the greater the degree of cold work, the lower the temperature of recrystallization on annealing. In the course of these experiments, I conceived practically the same ideas regarding the reasons for recrystallization as those advanced in the article under discussion. After a metal has been reduced by cold work to about one-fourth of its original area, the differences in orientation of different parts of a given grain can be seen plainly at a magnification of about 1,000 diameters. It is interesting to note that in Fig. A, Plate I, the lines of deformation are not parallel. For example,. in the large grain at the lower left corner of the micrograph, if the lines of deformation about 3g in. from the left edge are continued in a straight line, this line will intersect a straight line drawn as a continuation of the lines of deformation on the extreme right of the grain, at an angle of about 20°. Similarly, if the lines of deformation at the extremities of the large grain in the right central portion of the micrograph are extended, the lines intersect at an angle of about 35°. The individual lines of deformation are not straight. In some of these the parts of the broken lines intersect at angles as great as 15°.

We have seen that the first coal development in Pennsylvania was in the Pittsburgh bed in the southwestern corner of the state. The next mining, in point of time, was done in Clearfield County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, but the amount of mining done was quite small for a number of years and was soon exceeded by that from the area north of the Susquehanna River in Tioga, Bradford and Lycoming Counties, which will be considered now. It is claimed that coal was first noticed in Tioga County, in 1792, by Robert and Benjamin Patterson who were leading a party of settlers from Williamsport to southern New York, and while clearing a road near the site of Blossburg, found coal, which was said to be good. About 1815 David Clemons made an arrangement with Aaron Bloss, owner of the land, to work some of the coal and hauled the first load down the river to Painted Post, N. Y., as there were no available markets in his own state. Smiths found it an excellent fuel and apparently he found a ready market for the small amount he could transport by wagons and sleighs. As wood began to become scarce around the towns in New York State, the knowledge of the coal deposits in the mountains at the head of the Tioga River attracted attention to the field and the necessity, for means of transportation from it. Some coal had been floated down the river, but navigation was uncertain and dangerous. In 1827 an iron plant was built, and to ship its product and coal, it was proposed to build a canal along the river to reach Corning, N. Y. A company had been chartered in 1826 in Pennsylvania to "make a navigable canal or slack-water navigation" to the state line and coal was shipped on rafts of logs, both being sold, during highwater. In 1828 the company was authorized to build a railroad instead of a canal, and in September 1840, the railroad was completed from Corning to Blossburg.1 That some coal from Pennsylvania had been reaching southern New York towns prior to the improved means of transport is shown by the report of a committee to the New York Assembly: "the bituminous coal has been brought to us either from Great Britain or from that part of our own country which borders on, and lies west and south of the Susquehan-

The economics of recovering slimes by gravity concentration, except in a few highly specialized cases, was hampered by the lack of suit- able high capacity equipment. However, in the last decade increasing cost of power and reagents, coupled with the development of high capacity units, has led to a reappraisal of the benefits of slime gravity concentration. This paper seeks to analyze the merits of gravity concentration, and the constraints placed upon it by the laws of motion. It traces the recent developments of unit processes, and their application to a wide range of minerals. The economics of gravity concentration are also discussed.

Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimehs, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, asbes-

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within ground-water aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contamination. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environmental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laborator.y experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit.

The transient one-dimensional heat-conduction equation is solved for two semi-infinite media, at different initial temperatures, brought into (poor) thermal contact. It is shown that the two interface temperatures gradually approach the well-known, instantaneously assumed, common interface temperature of the case of zero contact resistance. The present analysis, with slight modifications, may be used in fair approximation also for the class of problems involving a change of phase. One particular application of the boundary value problem solved in this paper concerns the determination of the temerature distribution in metal castings and molds.P This problem has been treated extensively by analytical methods (see e.g., the literature listed in Refs. 1 to 4) by electrical analogs (see e.g., Refs. 11 to 14) and also by experimental methods (see the literature listed in Refs. 4, 5), but prior to the work of Pellini and Ruddle the experimental results were rather unreliable. Immediate motivation for the work described in this paper was to better understand the results of Pellini,' which are typified by the curves of Fig. 1. Pellini cast 20-in. high, 7-in. sq steel ingots into cast-iron molds of various thicknesses. He measured the temperatures at mid-height, at a number of stations in the casting and the mold, and obtained the cooling curves shown in Fig. 1. The most conspicuous thing about Fig. 1 is the large temperature discontinuity at the interface between casting and mold, due presumably to the shrinking away of the casting from the wall and the attendant creation of an airgap, as the casting cools. Such a contact resistance slows down the anticipated freezing rate; an analytical prediction of this is of much interest in foundry practice. The determination of the effect of contact resistance in the presence of a change of phase will be dealt with, by an approximate method, in a separate paper.' In the present paper the much simpler problem is considered in which there is contact resistance but no change of phase. This problem frequently arises in the analysis of aircraft structures.+ It can initial temperature, and may be regarded as semi-infinite. We suppose the thermal properties in the two media to be time, temperature, and space independent; there are no sources or sinks within the media. In Fig. 2(a) we illustrate, schematically, the case of no contact resistance. The semi-infinite media "0" and "2:' initially at temperatures 8 (- m) and 8(+ -), respectively, are brought into contact at time t =0. A common interface temperature 8,i = is instantaneously established, and thereafter remains constant. Temperature curves are drawn for three instants of time. When there is contact resistance between the two media, the temperature equalization occurs as sketched in Fig. 2(b). Fig. 2(c) illustrates a temperature curve, using the dimension-less notation Barber-Weiner-Boley6 have stated the equations [23a, b] given below, which govern the heat transfer in the two media, and solved them for a rather complicated special case. In their example both media "O" and "2" are finite, are insulated at their far ends, and there is steady heat input into medium 2. In Eq. [27] we give the general solution of the most important special case, where the two media are semi-infinite and there are no sources or sinks. In this case the results may be stated in simple closed form. In Fig. 3, to be discussed in the next section, we illustrate the variation of the interface temperature when steel at 2760" is brought into contact with iron at 100". This example, if we disregard the effect of the heat of fusion, is comparable to Pellini's experimental results, Fig. 1. (Unfortunately, however, experimental determination of the interface temperatures was difficult to carry out, and hence Fig. 1 is not very accurate near the interface.) In Figs. 4 and 5 of the following section, we similarly compare Pellini's sandcasting tests with analytical results for the case where steel at 2760" is brought into contact with sand at 100". It will be pointed out that, insofar as the interface temperatures are concerned, heat of fusion has a minor effect, and so the present approximation, with small modifications, may be

A method is presented for calculating the pressure depletion performance of a gas-condensate reservoir from the original reservoir fluid composition using the laboratory determined pressure-production history and retrograde liquid accumulation as guides. Equilibrium vaporization ratios for this calculation were modified from published data until the calculated dew point pressure and retrograde liquid accumulation agreed with the values observed in the laboratory. The calculated results are compared with the produced gas composition determined by low temperature analysis during constant volume laboratory experiments of pressure depletion behavior. This comparison shows that the calculation procedure is adequate for determination of gas phase composition. Data from field separation tests in low temperature separators are presented which verify the applicability of published equilibrium vaporization ratios for a wide range of separator conditions. INTRODUCTION A reliable prediction of the pressure depletion performance of a gas-condensate reservoir is necessary in determining reserves and evaluating field separation methods. The predicted performance is also used in planning future operations and studying the economics of projects for increasing liquid recovery. Because the flow of fluid in a volumetric gas-condensate reservoir is usually single phase flow, the pressure-depletion per-formake is primarily a function of the phase behavior of the reservoir fluid. The properties of a gas-condensate system of major importance are: (1) compressibility factor at reservoir temperature and pressure; (2) dew point pressure; (3) composition changes of the vapor phase with pressure depletion; (4) recovery of original in-place hydrocarbons at any pressure; and (5) retrograde condensate accumulation. These properties are most generally determined by a pressure depletion-type experiment on recombined separator gas and liquid samples in the laboratory. ldeally the pressure-depletion performance can be calculated from the composition of the original reservoir fluid if the reservoir temperature and initial pressure are known.1,2,3 It has been reported "... comparison of such computations with depletion-type ex-periments on recombined samples in the laboratory have yielded results that appeared to be entirely adequate.". The success of such calculations is determined by the equilibrium vaporization ratios chosen, especially those for the higher boiling point hydrocarbons. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method for computing the change in composition of the vapor phase during pressure depletion by production using laboratory determined properties of the system to guide the calculation and to illustrate the use of the method with data from the Cockfield "D" sand of Washington field, St. Landry Parish, La. Results of field tests and laboratory analysis are included. As a result of this reservoir fluid study, a cycling program has been evaluated, the fidd has been unitized, and the cycling started in July, 1956.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better under- standing of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling- to the flotation operator-is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given-" conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill pr6ducts prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral surfaces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure there from."

THE blast furnace of the Columbia Steel Corpn., at Ironton; Utah, was put in blast April 30, 1924, and its operation has presented some interesting problems. The coke for the furnace is furnished by 33 Koppers Becker type ovens of 15 tons capacity each. The coal is shipped from the company's mine at Columbia, Utah, which is approximately 123 miles from Ironton, and is probably the highest volatile coal that is being coked for blast furnace use in this country. As a part of an investigation conducted by the Cement Section of the Bureau of Standards, at the plant of the Security Cement & Lime Co., Security, Md., the High-temperature Measurements Section was called upon to measure temperatures in a dry-process, coal-burning kiln. Although the measurements were made only under the conditions existing in one plant, the methods employed and the conclusions drawn apply, in a general way, to those existing in most plants. As far as we have been able to learn, no sufficiently thorough methods of making accurate pyrometric measurements in the sintering zone and in the rear end of rotary cement kilns have been described. It is believed that in this investigation, data were obtained that can serve as a foundation for further study of the problems of pyrometry in cement kilns. IMPORTANCE OF TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS IN ROTARY CEMENT KILNS The manufacture of Portland cement is today fairly well standardized. The various steps in the manufacture have been developed to such an extent that the process is almost automatic. In spite of these strides the efficiency of utilization of heat in the kiln is very low and an undue proportion is wasted; for example, about 50 per cent; ordinarily goes up the stack. In order to prevent these losses, not only should means be provided to utilize the waste heat but instruments, such as pyrometers, should be installed to study and control the operation with the view of minimizing the losses. At the same time, such control will produce a more uniform product. The saving in-fuel that may be effected by the proper use of pyrometers would be much more than their cost. Where these pyrometers should be installed and what they can show are very briefly indicated in the following paragraphs and discussed in greater detail later.

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each of clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.

High intensity wet magnetic separation methods have received much attention in the search for alternative and effective methods to treat weakly magnetic minerals. This paper examines the incorporation of such techniques in the beneficiation of a non-sliming specular Michigan Hematite. The dependence of separation efficiency and beneficiation of specular hematite on various parameters controlling the operation of such a device is investigated experimentally. Particular attention is focused on particle size limitations imposed in these separations. In light of these data, metallurgical balances are presented and an attempt made to rationalize the various models suggested in the literature.

INTRODUCTION Ronald G. Stovash General Superintendent Consolidation Coal Company Shoemaker Mine Moundsville, West Virginia Consolidation Coal Company's Shoemaker Mine is located in West Virginia's Northern panhandle near Wheeling, adjacent to the Ohio River. Steam coal is mined from the Pittsburgh #8 seam which averages 65 in. in thickness. The 10 in. of draw rock directly above the coal is taken on advancement, but remains when longwalled. The top consists of up to 12 in. of lower quality coal, and immediately over that, up to 10 ft of multi layered shales, coal, and bone. The cover ranges from 300 to 800 ft of shales and limestone. Two longwalls operate in the mine. The first longwall started in April 1975 and is retreating its eighth panel. This wall was the first to use shield supports in the United States. The second longwall started in September 1979 and is currently retreating its first 7,000 ft panel.

IIT Research Institute has investigated the potential of high pressure water jets for rapid rock excavation. During this study, an attempt was made to correlate the extent of breakage effected to the mechanical properties of rocks. Six rock types were used in these experiments and nine properties were determined for each rock variety. A regression equation using the two most significant rock properties and one jet parameter (pressure) was established. Although tests were conducted to specific pressures of 35, no minimum in the specific energy consumption was noted.

The use of steam-stamps in the crushing of ore for the purpose of amalgamation has been very limited, and little has been written on the subject. As the writer has been operating a mill of this kind during the past year, it is possible that he may be able to present a few points in regard to mill-practice in this line which will be of interest. The mill herein referred to contains two Tremain steamstamps, a more detailed description of which will be given below. A bond and lease had been taken on a property on Cross mountain, Gunnison county, Colo., and the parties operating wished to prospect it thoroughly and did not wish to ship out the ore, owing to high freight-rates. They looked around to find some mill that would answer the purpose and not be too expensive. The steam-stamp in question was finally decided on, and the writer was employed to erect and operate it. The economy of construction was demonstrated at the outset. The stamps were dropping within ten days from the time that the machinery was unloaded on the ground. A large portion of this period was consumed in waiting for supplies and fittings which should have been on the ground at the Hame time with the machinery. Ore.—The ore to be treated was a mixture of white, porous quartz, with the decomposed and undecomposed oxides of iron and manganese in varying proportions, from the pure white quartz to solid pieces of the oxides. It appeared to be the product of replacement in a soft dolomite at or near the line of contact with a dike of porphyry. On careful examination with the aid of a microscope it was found that the gold was in the form of an extremely thin film over the surfaces of the quartz, making only a bronzy-yellow coating, quite readily distinguished from the film of iron oxide, which was also present. THE fact is notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter produc-tion of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were-contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals.
