Those who for the first time see, at a mine, a great hole caused by subsidence; or, going underground, see an extensive fall of roof or hanging wall are apt to regard such an occurrence as an accident and not a normal condition of exhaustive mining. Moreover, the public is inclined to believe that a cave or subsidence of the surface is the result of carelcssness in mining or the rapacity of the mine operators in "robbing pillars," a tern too loosely used in descriptions of coal mining. This belief is fostered by the common-law requirement that an owner of the surface or of surface improvements is entitled to full support of the surface. Court decisions have upheld this law even when that owner has sold or leased the underlying mineral, unless a clause in the sale or lease contract exempts the mining company from paying the owner of the surface for damages that may result from mining. Another reason for this belief is the earlier practice (which is still extensively followed in this country) of leaving all coal pillars unmined, except as they have been thinned by so-called robbing; by not extracting the pillars, the surface may be supported by them for years, perhaps for generations. Inasmuch as the practice of leaving permanently in the mines from one-third to one-half of the mineral is wrong, with respect to conservation of a national resource, it behooves the mining engineers to assemble data and disseminate information on the subject, pointing out that subsidence must follow complete extraction, unless expensive methods of back-filling are employed, such as are used in Germany and France. These methods inevitably increase the cost of mining and the price of the mineral produced. It is popular to speak of "waste in mining" without a realization that much so-called wasting is unavoidable unless subsidence is accepted and provision made therefor where the surface is valuable, or else the only present known alternative of hydraulically placing sand or crushed stone filling in the excavations, at an increased cost of the mineral product to the consumer.

THE favor with which the members of the Institute received Mr. Fernow's paper upon the use of charbon roux in the manufacture of iron has encouraged me to present this paper, in the hope of having the discussion upon the manufacture and use of the oldest and undoubtedly the best fuel for producing pig iron continued. Owing to the advances made in employing anthracite coal, bituminous coal, or coke, or mixtures of them, we are apt to forget how much of our present development is due to the pioneers in iron manufacture and the fuel which they employed in the production of pig iron. In Mr. Swank's last compilation of the iron and steel works of the United States, the furnace capacity of the country is given as 5,868,000 tons, of which 1,000,000 tons can be made in the 264 charcoal furnaces. In other words, over one-third of the furnaces now in existence use charcoal for fuel, and produce more than one-sixth of the iron made. If to this is added the 130,000 tons of blooms and billets turned out by the 122 forges and bloomaries, the importance of the charcoal industries will be appreciated.

This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

The Aldrich Mining Go. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the east half of Township 12, Range 12 W., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of' the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be canceled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset—namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. Although so common and well known a metal, tin is really a less abundant element than many of those less familiar and usually ranked with the scarce or rare elements, such as cerium, yttrium, lithium, beryllium, titanium, zirconium and vanadium. The color of tin is white, with a slightly bluish tinge. When it is compared with nickel, the latter metal is brown. When placed alongside of tin, chromium is definitely blue. Tin is whiter than silver or zinc. Exceedingly thin films of tin show various shades of brown by transmitted light. The metal has a brilliant luster, and when mirror-polished, has high light reflectivity. The luster depends to a large extent upon the pouring temperature at which the metal is cast. If the temperature be too high, iridescent colors may show on the surface. These are the result of oxide film formation. If the pouring temperature be too low, the surface is dull. Small amounts of foreign metals, such as lead, arsenic, antimony and iron, decrease the luster of tin and impart a yellowish tinge to the metal. The structure is decidedly crystalline. The cast metal is a mass of crystals. When a bar of tin is bent, it emits a characteristic creaking sound. This is called the "cry" of tin, resulting from the grinding of the crystals one against the other during the bending of the metal. Tin metal may lose its crystalline structure by cold working, but grain growth occurs rapidly under the influence of heat. Metal which has been cast at a low temperature may become amorphous as the result of mechanical work. If such material be heated to temperatures well below the melting point, say at 110° C. for a half hour or for a few minutes at 150" C. recrystallization occurs. If the surface of tinned plate, tin foil, or tin meta1 in cast form be etched with hydrochloric acid containing a little free chlorine, attack occurs at the intererystalline faces. The surface shows patterns resembling the frost flowers on window panes in winter. The etched appearance is called moire metallique. Fine dendritic surface crystals of tin may be obtained by casting the metal on a surface of polished steel. THE success of the Charpy impact test in the steel industry has led those interested in aluminum alloys to investigate the possible applica¬tion of this test to aluminum and its alloys. In this paper are set forth the results of a few preliminary tests made at the Lynite Laboratories of the Aluminum Manufactures, Inc. In order to study more thor-oughly the significance of the Charpy test, slow-bending tests have been made duplicating the arrangement of the impact machine. Tests have been made on both notched and unnotched specimens of a series of copper-aluminum alloys. APPARATUS The standard American-made Charpy impact machine delivering a blow of over 200 ft.-lb. was- much too large to test aluminum-alloy specimens of the same type used for steel, so that it was necessary either to adopt a larger specimen or to have a special light-weight hammer made. Since there is no known relation between specimens of different sizes, even though geometrically similar, it was decided to adhere to the 10 by 10 mm. specimen. Accordingly, Sauveur and Boylston, the American makers of the machine, were asked to construct a special light-weight pendulum adapted to their standard machine, this pendulum to have one-tenth the capacity of the standard. The writer wishes here to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. H. M. Boylston for the personal interest and care exercised in constructing this pendulum. The machine with, the light-weight hammer in place is shown in Fig. 1. It is mounted on a concrete foundation with the concrete covering the flange on the base of the machine. Vibration is further prevented by four 5/8 -in. (15.8 mm.) foundation bolts. The large standard hammer shown against the wall was also used for some of the unnotched bars that requited more than 20 ft.-lb. to rupture.

In most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared in publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions. Generally speaking, the oil-bearing formations of California are soft, unconsolidated sand beds, separated by clay strata, which are also soft. Some of the sand beds carry water instead of oil. All of the beds are more or less separated, probably being of lenticular shape. Very few of the beds in the oil fields lie flat or undisturbed over any great area. Folding and tilting are common, and faulting also occurs in some of the fields. The accumulation of oil is not confined to any single structural feature, such as the anticline, but occurs in many other structural features. The region about the south shore of Lake Superior is to geologists one of the most interesting districts of the United States, embracing as it does, in a limited area, old crystalline rocks, together with forms that are almost in their original condition of a beach sand and mud. In this region was first established the base of the geological column, the Azoic (" without life") System of Foster and Whitney, or the Archæan (" the beginning ") of Dana. Overlying this system are found the sandstones and limestones of the Paleozoic (" ancient life "), and their associated lava-flows (Algonkian ?). These systems possess a strong economic interest, owing to the stores of iron in the Azoic and of copper in the Paleozoic or Eozoic of this district, which forms one of the most important mining regions in America. The geology of this section is so difficult and complicated that, in its general discussion, perhaps no proposition can be stated concerning any portion of it to which exceptions cannot be taken. Indeed, out of the general discussion of different points comes in time the truth, and various geologists, even now, are working over this region in the endeavor to arrive at some consensus, or at least to determine upon what points they can agree, and upon what points difference of opinion will have to exist between them at present, until further evidence can be obtained. The writer will endeavor to give in a brief form that which appears to him at present to be the most correct statement of the geological structure of the region, admitting that from time to time, as more complete evidence shall be obtained, he expects to change his views in the future, as he has done in the past, if that evidence shall cause him to believe that he has been mistaken.

NORMALLY the grain size of cold-rolled and annealed copper sheet is of the order of 0.02 to 0.06 mm., and 0.1 min., for example, would, for many purposes, he regarded as undesirably large. The occurrence of very large grain sizes in a few isolated cases of copper sheet led the authors to inquire into the causes giving rise to such unusual results. During the course of this work a very large number of experiments have been carried out to determine the effect of varying the conditions of the final and penultimate rolling and annealing operations, as well as of earlier rolling and annealing treatments. A correspondingly large number of observations have been made, but within the space of one paper it is possible only to outline relatively briefly what appear to be the more important of these experiments and observations. The presentation of the results does not follow chronologically the order in which the experiments were carried out and they have been rearranged for the sake of simplicity. In recent years a considerable amount of work has been done in connection with the recrystallization and grain growth in metals and alloys that take place on annealing, and a number of generalizations have been reached. It is known that the crystal size in wrought material in the annealed condition depends on a number of factors, including the time and temperature of the annealing operations and the nature and amount of cold-work to which the material has been subjected. Results, however, that are not covered by these generalizations can be obtained, which, in some instances, may even appear to he contradictory to them. According to these generalizations gradual changes in grain size are effected by progressive variation of the factors involved in annealing or cold-working. The work recorded in the present paper, however, relates to the development of grain sizes which are far beyond those normally encountered in ordinary annealing operations and far in excess of grain sizes which, according to ordinary standards, would be classified as coarse or large.

For a number of years the cyclone, familiar to Americans as a dust collector, has been used as a thickener of suspensions at one of the coal-preparation plants of the Netherland State Mines in Limburg. The plant treats nut-size coal at 120 tons an hour in a heavy-medium washer. The diluted medium from the rinsing screens is thickened in cyclones. More recently the cyclone has been adapted to act as a coal cleaner. The principle of the cyclone thickener is the same as that of the cyclones used in industry for catching dust or fine particles suspended in the air or in gases. Generally the latter are more efficient in this respect—the smallest particles that can be caught with reasonable efficiency are considerably smaller than with the cyclone thickeners. The reason is obvious; the ratio of specific gravities between the dust particles in a gas and the gas itself is about 800 times larger than the ratio between, for instance, the specific gravities of shale particles and water. The ratio of the velocities of fall of shale particles (? = 2.5)† in air and in water is as follows: In the range of Stokes: ?air = 93?water In the range of Allen: Wair = 49Wwater In the range of Newton-Rittinger: ?air = 36.6?water The same ratios apply for the velocities in the centrifugal field, from which it follows that it is especially difficult to catch the very fine suspension particles in a liquid. The efficiency of a cyclone thickener depends mainly on the circumferential velocity of the liquid at its innermost radius, because here the centrifugal forces are the highest. However, these velocities cannot easily be calculated, as the flow is three-dimensional, and thus the axial components cannot be neglected .(p. 252, condition 3). We believe that at first a spiral tangential motion along the cyclone wall is created, which causes the inner vortex ascending from the apex of the cyclone (Fig I). At the same time the inner vortex is strengthened by the individual vortices in horizontal planes, and thus a part of the total flow can find another and perhaps quicker way to the outlet. In any case, the exact motion, not only of the fluid but especially of the suspended particles, is so difficult that we have to refer to the experiments to find the exact behavior of this kind of apparatus. A vein may be defined as an aggregation of mineral matter, more or less tabular or lenticular in form, which was deposited from solution and is of later origin than the inclosing rock. This definition differs from the one found in many text-books in that no assumption is made as to the origin of the space occupied by the vein or the manner in which the mineral matter was deposited. In the present paper the writer purposes to discuss the mechanics of vein formation, and does not wish to begin by begging the question. The origin of ore deposits has been diligently investigated in recent years, but, while much has been written concerning the chemistry of the process, the physical side of the question has received less attention. The source of the ore minerals; the chemical composition of ore-bearing solutions; the relative importance of magmatic and meteoric waters as agents of concentration; and the causes of mineral precipitation have all been discussed at length. On the other hand, little has been written concerning the mechanics of vein formation, and the theories given in text-books today are essentially the same as those developed by the early Cornish and Saxon miners. Early investigators often regarded both veins and dikes as igneous in origin, but today the theory that vein minerals have been deposited from solutions, either liquid or gaseous, is firmly established. The latter view is supported by the fact that many vein-forming minerals are not found in unaltered igneous rocks; by evidence obtained in the laboratory regarding the solubility of minerals; by the presence of many ore minerals in hot-spring waters; by the occurrence of some veins in regions consisting exclusively of unaltered sedimentary rocks; by evidence as to the temperature at which some minerals are formed; and by the absence of mineral segregation due to difference in specific gravity. There is still, however, much difference of opinion as to whether certain tabular-shaped masses should be classed as veins or as dikes. Some of the earlier investigators have also advocated the theory that veins are contemporaneous in origin with the inclosing rock, while others have believed the vein minerals to represent a recrystallization or transforma-

MICROSCOPIC rnetallography has been exploited quite well enough to bring about a very general understanding that the typical metal or alloy is composed of minute crystalline particles blended into a coherent microstructural mosaic. One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atomis or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientations and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

SINCE I have written of the varied work of pre- paring the ores, I will now write of the various methods of smelting them. Although those who bum, roast and calcinea the ore, take from it something which is mixed or combined with the metals ; and those who crush it with stamps take away much ; and those who wash, screen and sort it, take away still more; yet they cannot remove all which conceals the metal from the eye and renders it crude and unformed. Wherefore smelting is necessary, for by this means earths, solidified juices, and stones are separated from the metals so that they obtain their proper colour and become pure, and may be of great use to mankind in many ways. When the ore is smelted, those things which were mixed with the metal before it was melted are driven forth, because the metal is perfected by fire in this manner. Since metalliferous ores differ greatly amongst themselves, first as to the metals which they contain, then as to the quantity of the metal which is in them, and then by the fact that some are rapidly melted by fire and others slowly, there are, therefore, many methods of smelting.
