THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. LABOR shortages, rising wages, and changes in moisture and fines content of the ore necessitated a review of the flowsheet at Warren Foundry & Pipe Co's. Mt. Hope, N. J. Mines Div. This plant had been designed prior to World War II, and started operations in January 1945. When this operation was designed there was an oversupply of labor in the area, wages were at a reasonable level, the run-of-mine ore was low in moisture, and there was a limited amount of fines. These factors all favored use of hand picking for cleaning rougher lump concentrate. Since that time, many changes have occurred. The proximity of defense industries and large military installations, has created one of the most acute labor shortages in the country. This labor shortage together with present wage levels, and the increase in moisture and fines in the ore created several problems. The increase in moisture and fines may be attributed to changed mining methods, the extensive use of sprays, and the opening of new mining areas bringing an increase in ground water. [ ] Two problems were presented by the increase in moisture and fines. The first was that lump ore arrived at the open hearth in an unacceptable condition, due to the segregation enroute of the large amount of fines that had adhered to the lumps. The second problem was that high magnetite content fines coated the large lumps, making it difficult for pickers to distinguish middling by other than the relative weight. [ ]

Discussion of the paper of WALTER 0. SNELLING, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704. A. C. McLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out iii the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750°F. and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. WILLIAMS.-Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Rittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150°C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? WILLIAM A. WILLIAMs.-The fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

When bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not inixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below. In a foundry melting 50,000 to 80,000 Ib. of bronze per day, a week's accumulation of furnace slag and ladle skimmings amounted to 16,500 1b.—over three times as much as the foundry superintendent estimated before the accumulation was made. In reviewing the history of the metallurgy of zinc, I shall pass hastily over what is only of antiquarian interest. That has been excellently treated by Dr. Bernhard Neumann in "Die Metalle" (1904) and has been described briefly in my "Production and Properties of Zinc" (1902), in my "Lead and Zinc in the United States " (1908), and in other metallurgical works of more or less the same date. In this present monograph, I have it in mind to confine myself mainly to technical practice, especially to that of the last 75 years, prior to which period advance was slow and of no great moment. The ancients made brass by the cementation process, i.e., embedding copper in a mixture of calamine and carbon and heating, whereby zinc oxide was reduced and zinc was vaporized and combined with the copper. Zinc was isolated by some of the alchemists, who named it and knew something of its properties, but made no use of it. Long before then, however, zinc was produced in India. Later it was produced in southern China. Possibly the Chinese obtained their knowledge from India. The Chinese in remote places still produce small quantities of zinc. I have seen photographs of their furnaces; or pots, for they hardly deserve the dignity of being called furnaces. I imagine that they are the same that were used centuries ago, for I cannot conceive of anything more primitive. Anyway, it is certain that the idea of a commercial production of zinc in Europe was imported from the Orient, where the metal was known in commerce as Speauter and Spiauter, whence speltrum and finally our term spelter. Tutanego and Tuteneague are other old names. Dr. Isaac Lawson went to China about 1730, expressly to discover the method of its production. What connection there was between Isaac Lawson and John Champion we do not know, but the latter obtained in 1739 a patent for a process of distillation downward and at some time between 1740 and 1743 erected a works at Bristol and actually began the manufacture of spelter. A method is presented for predicting the performance of water flooding operations in depleted, or nearly depleted, petroleum reservoirs. The method makes use of permeability variations and the vertical distribution of productive capacity. From these two parameters can be calculated the produced water cut versus the oil recovery. Derivations of the mathematical analogy is shown and sample calculations and curves of prediction are presented. Comparison is made of the predicted and actual performance of a typical 5-spot in an Illinois water flood. INTRODUCTION The use of water as a flooding medium in both depleted and "flush" oil reservoirs is gaining greater recognition and acceptance. Many of the shallower fields, depleted by primary production, have been and are being subjected to water injection in order to obtain some part of the large volume of oil remaining after primary production. Some of the earlier water flood installation proved highly discouraging and the value of water flooding was often questioned. Many of these earlier floods were haphazardly selected and developed as little was known of the physical characteristics and contents of the producing formations. The prior evaluation of the flood performance was impossible. During the past decade the development of the required reservoir engineering tools-—core analysis, reservoir fluid analysis, electric logs, fluid flow formulae, etc.—has allowed the engineer to construct and apply the methods which are presently being used to evaluate the economic and mechanical susceptibility of a reservoir to flooding. This discussion will present a method for taking into account the effect of permeability variations in predicting the performance of water floods in depleted reservoirs. PERMEABILITY AND CAPACITY DISTRIBUTION It is generally agreed by most investigators that in a single phase system fluid will flow in a porous and permeable medium in proportion to the permeability of the medium. Producing formations are usually highly irregular in permeability, both vertically and horizontally. However, zones of higher or lower permeability are often found to exhibit lateral continuity. Thus, while structurally comparable stringers in adjacent wells may differ several fold in permeability values, they usually bear resemblance as being part of a general continuous higher or lower permeability section. It is generally agreed that where such stratification of permeability exists, injected water sweeps first the zones of higher permeability, and it is in these zones that "break-through" first occurs in the producing well. It is a basic assurnption of the presently described method that penetration of a water front follows the individual permeability variations as if such variations were continuous from input to producing well. This is admittedly not rigorously true, but can be justified as making possible a simplifying mathematical approach to an otherwise extremely complicated three dimensional flow problem. As a basis for study of the lateral flow of fluids in formations of irregular permeability, the irregularities may be conveniently represented by a permeability distribution curve and a capacity distribution curve. In obtaining these curves, the permeability values, regardless of their structural position in the formation, are rearranged in order of decreasing permeability. If these permeability values so arranged are plotted against the cumulative thickness, a permeability distribu- tion curve is obtained. This curve may then be likened to a "smoothed" permeability profile of the formation. In making comparison between different distribution curves it is convenient to state the permeabilities in terms of the ratio of the actual permeability values to the average permeability of the formation. These ratios termed "dimensionless permeabilities", are used in this paper rather than the permeabilities in terms of millidarcys. The capacity distribution curve is a lot of the cumulative capacity (starting with the highest permeabilities) versus the cumulative thickness. The capacity and thickness are given as fractions of the total capacity and thickness. Mathematically, the capacity distribution is the intergration of the permeability distribution curve. In practice it is convenient to first obtain the capacity distribution curve and derive from it a smoothed dimen-sionaless permeability curve. The method of obtaining the capacity distribution curve is illustrated in the successive column of Table 1, in which capacity and thickness are derived as fractions of their respective totals. If only a small number of permeability values are available, it is generally desirable to smooth the resultant curve. This has been done to give the capacity distribution curve shown in Figure 1. The differentiation of the capacity distribution curve to obtain the permeability distribution curve is shown in Table 2. Here, the capacity values are read from the smoothed curve at intervals of cumulative thickness, and the increments of capacity are divided by the increments of thickness to obtain the dimensionless permeability, K. Due to this stepwise procedure of calculation these premeability values must be plotted at the midpoints of the successive increments of thickness. The curve so obtained from these data is shown in Figure 1. The total area under the K' curve is equal to unity.

The development in the perfection of mine-surveying instruments has been by no means rapid, as it has depended somewhat on the details of construction borrowed from astronomical and geodetic theodolites, largely on the restrictions laid down by mining companies and the prejudices of mine managers themselves, but more than all on the methods used in conducting surveys and the importance attached thereto. Mine-surveying, in some form or other, has been practiced from the very earliest times; but it has never kept pace with the other branches of surveying, or even with the art of mining itself, and cannot be recognized as an exact science until shortly before the beginning of this century. The works of Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the second century B.C., are still extant, and contain descriptions of a rectangular sighting-instrument, which he invented and called a diopter. His improvement upon this simple construction, which possibly he devised for use in the Greek mines for rough leveling-purposes and for laying out any angle, must be considered, says Hübner," as the origin of the highly perfected theodolite of to-day. Whether this instrument came into general use during the first centuries of the Christian era, is not recorded; in fact, no writer undertakes to tell how mine-surveying was conducted until 1556, in which year Agricola expounds the principles of mining and metallurgy in his De Re Metallica, devoting the entire fifth chapter to the practice of mine-surveying (see Fig. 1). In mediæval times those who possessed any knowledge of engineering skill made strenuous effort to keep their art a secret, partly on account of the miners' proverbial conservatism and partly for their own personal aggrandizement, and were, in

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

EFFECT of elements on the solubility of carbon in liquid iron is useful in calculating and correlating a number of thermodynamic properties as shown elsewhere in detail.' Kitchener, Bockris, and spratt2, and later Turkdogan and Hancock3 have investigated the effect of sulfur on the solubility of carbon at various temperatures and concentrations. For any chosen sulfur concentration, the solubility of carbon reported by Kitchener et al. is considerably lower than that by Turkdogan and Hancock. It was therefore felt that a reinvestigation of this problem was necessary. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD An alloy of Fe-C-S .was prepared with electrolytic iron and ferrous sulfide melted by induction in a graphite crucible, 4 in. high 1 1/2 in. ID under a CO-atmosphere. The temperature, held at 1500" ± 5°C in all experiments, was measured with a Pt-Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouple immersed into the melt. In order to assure saturation with carbon, the melt was stirred with a graphite rod. After approximately 1 hr at 1500 °C, a sample was obtained by sucking the melt into a silica tube, 4 mm ID. The sample was then analyzed for carbon and sulfur by usual methods. RESULTS The results are presented in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1 with the individual values of Turkdogan and Hancock.3 Scattering in the data is equivalent to 3 pct or less in carbon analysis. The broken line represents the empirical equation obtained by Kitchener et al. from their data. It is evident that the present data are in good agreement with those of the former investigators but in disagreement with the latter. The cause for this discrepancy cannot be readily offered since the experimental methods in the three investigations were nearly identical. Additional evidence corroborating the author's results may be presented in the following manner. The difference between the solubilities of carbon in the ternary Fe-C-X melt with a small concentration of any element X, and in the binary Fe-C melt is %?C = %CIII-%CII [1] where %?C is the change in solubility, and %CIII and %CII are the solubilities in the ternary and the binary systems respectively. THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Standard U-shaped magnetic test specimens were punched, deburred, sprayed with MgO, and annealed in ~50°C dew point hydrogen. Textures were identified with the aid of etch pits, the

Quantitative knowledge of the time clement involved in austenite transformation in a particular steel provides a sound basis for understanding and planning heat-treatment. Such knowledge is conveniently obtained by measurement of austenite transformation as it occurs at each of a series of temperature levels. The results of these measurements usually are summarized in the form of the now familiar isothermal transformation diagram (I-T diagram, TTT diagram, or S-curve). Although a considerable number of such diagrams already have appeared in the literature, there remain many compositions of commercial importance for which no I-T diagram is available. The diagram for many such steels may be predicted from published data with sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes, but for others no satisfactory prediction can be made because the effect on austenite transformation of one or more of the important alloying elements present is not well enough known. Such a steel is Nitralloy, Type 13s-Modified, which, containing about 1.25 per cent aluminum, differs from any whose I-T diagram has been published. This paper presents results of a study of the isothermal transformation behavior of a sample from a commercial heat of this aluminum-chromium-molybdenum steel, together with pertinent supplementary data including the equilibrium transformation temperatures (Aeaand Ae,), the temperature range of martensite formation, and the end-quench harden-ability. These data are directly applicable to the hcat-treatment of this type of steel and are of interest in revealing some of the fundamental effects of aluminum as an alloying element in steel. Material All specimens were prepared from a 1 1/4 i-in. diam bar forged from a 5 by 5-in. billet from a commercial heat made in an electric arc furnace. The composition of the bar was; C, 0.41 per cent: AIn, 0.57: P, 0.016: S, 0.005: Si, 0.24: Ni, 0.17: Cr, I.j7: Mo, 0.36: All 1.26. The forged bar was normalized from r750°F (95s°C) and then tempered for one hour at rzoo°F (650°C), this tempering treatment having been given to facilitate the machining of specimens. Equilibrium Transformation Temperatures In hypoeutectoid steel the minimum temperature at which austenite is completely stable, Aep, and the maximum temperature at which austenite is completely unstable, Ael, are of great significance in heat-treatment.
