IF all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin.

INTRODUCTION The Japanese dependency for mineral raw materials from foreign sources increased rapidly within the 20 years since the Korean war. During this 20 year period Japan has attempted to industrialize and develop her economy while depending mostly on heavy import of nearly all kinds of mineral raw materials. She has fabricated them using energy generated mostly by mineral fuel that are also imported. Fabricated goods are either used domestically to accelerate more fabrication industry or exported after adding more refinement or fabrication. In this paper iron ore as a major raw material for the Iron and Steel industry, three major base metals, copper, zinc and lead, and petroleum as a major energy source have been selected as examples to represent the general features of various kinds of mineral raw materials that are imported. Among other important mineral commodities for which Japan dependa upon foreign sources are: Aluminium, nickel and cobalt, potash and phosphorous 100 percent dependent and tin, tungusten, chromium and molybdenum over 95 percent dependent. IRON ORE Statistics for the important iron and steel raw materials, namely iron ore, coal and scrap iron are shown in Tables 1, 2 and Fig. 1. Iron ore is by far the most important and basic among these three commodities. There has been practically no steel or iron imported as a metal into Japan during this period. Iron ore, including aggregate such as pellets, and metallurgical coal are mostly transported in large ore cargo boats to the port where very efficient port facilities unload them directly at the steel mill site. The effects of several different prior treatments an the creep behavior of 99.9995 pct aluminum at 260°C and 1000 psi canstant stress are compared with annealed specimens. Quenching from 538oC, irradiation with 2 mev electrons, and tension-compression room temperature fatigue damage were used to change the substructure of the specimens prior to their creep testing. The quenched and the irradiated specimens showed a larger primary and transient stage contribution to the creep curve than those specimens which were only annealed prim to creep testing. The specimen receiving prior fatigue damage at room temperature showed no first stage or transient creep when tested under identical conditions as the above specimens and had an average creep rate seven orders of magnitude lower than that of either the annealed, the quenched or the irradiated creep specimens. In a previous electron transmission microscopy investigationl of the substructure developed during the creep of pure aluminum at 0.57 Tm, it was noted that a large concentration of vacancy loops and dislocation loops were present in and near the subboundaries while the interior of the subgrains contained few of these defects and had a low dislocation density, see Fig. 1. Yim and Grant2 and Hazlett3 have shown that the presence in nickel of a substructure developed by prior cold work effectively reduces the primary and transient contributions to the creep curve. Hultgren,4 McLean,5 Gervais, Norton, and Grant,6 Chang and Grant,7 and others have shown the same effect with the higher stacking fault energy material, aluminum. However, the specific defect responsible for the change in the creep behavior developed by the prior cold work was not established. Specifically, what effectively interfered with dislocation motion in these materials at elevated temperatures? Was it jogs on dislocations produced by their interaction with other dislocations or with vacancy or dipole loops, see Fig. 1, or did the subgrain walls determine the mean free path for glissile dislocations? This would be a realistic possibility only if subgrain boundaries are effective barriers to dislocation motion. The ability of a subgrain boundary to act effectively against glissile dislocations depends on the number and the arrangement of dislocations in the subboundary,8 which in turn is a function of the creep strain.' This paper compares the creep rate of specimens possessing a large vacancy concentration to that of annealed specimens and with specimens having a stable subboundary wall containing Lomer locks produced by prior fatigue damage. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vacancy Loops. Aluminum creep specimens, 99.9995 pct pure, were machined from zone refined rod to a 2-in. gage length and a cross-sectional area of 0.025 in. These specimens were annealed at 538oC, 1000°F, for 10 min and quenched into ice water. They were then reheated to the creep test temperature of 260°C, 500°F, and held at this temperature for 18 min to al-low for vacancy condensation and loop formation. The specimens were subsequently creep tested at 1000 psi constant stress at 260°C. The temperature along the gage length was monitored by three Pt-Pt, 13 pct Rh thermocouples, two embedded in the upper and lower shoulders of the specimen and one attached to the mid-point of the gage length- The temperature gradient was held to ± l°C or less throughout the Creep test. STRONTIUM is an essential constituent of celestite (strontium sulphate), of the rarer strontianite (strontium carbonate), and of a few very rare minerals. Celestite is the chief ore but strontianite is more valued except for making the purest strontium salts, because of its ease of processing. The public knows strontium mainly as the source of the red flame in fireworks but it has many other uses. PROPERTIES The celestite of commerce is a massive mineral of varying texture: coarsely crystalline, fibrous, bladed, very fine grained or earthy. The color varies greatly with the nature of the impurities but the purer specimens are light blue (Latin, caelum, sky) or white. The strontianite of commerce is a massive mineral, more or less coarsely crystalline. The color varies with the impurities. Distinctive characteristics are effervescence with acids, density (3.68 to 3.71), and crimson strontium flame. A typical British celestite before World War II analyzed: SrSO4, 96.55 pct; SrCO3, 0.17; BaSO4, 0.25; CaSO4, 0.54; MgCO3, 0.15; R20,, 0.90; Si02, 1.38.10 A German strontianite analyzed: SrCO3, 90.9 pct; CaCO3, 7.5; BaCO3, 0.1; Fe2O3, 0.05; A1203, 0.1; SiO2, 0.04; S, 0.1; P, 0.005.10 ORIGIN AND MODE OF OCCURRENCE According to Clarke,9 strontia forms about 0.02 pct of the crust of the earth and is present in most igneous rocks, but in smaller quantities than barium. Under certain conditions, large masses of celestite are deposited from sea water with anhydrite. The presence of large amounts of celestite in some saline deposits and its absence in others suggests that the deposition of celestite depends on whether certain as yet undetermined concentrations of sulphate and chloride ions are reached in the brines. The most extensive of these sedimentary deposits are those of the Keuper (Triassic) in England, of the Zechstein (Permian) in Germany, and of various Cretaceous formations in Texas, Arkansas, and Utah. Single-crystalline films of silicon of good quality were vacuum-deposited on sapphire. The improved crystallinity was achieved by the strict exclusion of oxygen from the evaporation system, including the use of a "oxygen-free" silicon source. To minimize possible contamination of the source, the silicon was sublimed from the solid at about 1390° C. using a simple electron bombardment system to heat the silicon. This resulted in deposition rates of about 5 to 7 µ per hr and film thicknesses of 4 to 20 µ. The vacuum during deposition was ordinarily about 5x 10-8 Torr, DESPITE the success achieved in the chemical vapor deposition of silicon on sapphire using Silane,1-4 vacuum deposition has not provided comparable properties. For example, Chu et a1.5 vacuum-deposited silicon on single-crystalline substrates of A12O3, Sic, ThO2, and other compounds, and, although some epi- but the use of ultrahigh vacuum (about 1 to 3 x10-9 Torr) during deposition did not significantly improve the results in the oxygen-free system. The crystalline quality of films deposited on (0001) sapphire was found to be considerably superior to (1102) sapphire surfaces. Using (0001) sapphire, single-crystalline films were deposited at temperatures as low as 780° C and as high as 1075°C, with the best crystalline quality obtained at about 1000°C. At this temperature, hole mobilities over 250 sq cm per v-sec were achieved. taxy was indicated, single-crystalline films were not produced. More recently, Salama, Tucker, and young6 evaporated silicon on single-crystalline sapphire, but only poor crystallinity was observed, and low carrier mobilities were measured. In the present experiments, good-quality single-crystalline films of silicon on sapphire have been achieved by specifically excluding oxygen from the evaporation. This included not only the use of a "clean" vacuum system but, of special importance, the use of an oxygen-free silicon source. This has also been shown to provide a dramatic improvement in silicon homoepi-taxy.7 As a result, silicon-on-sapphire films with hole mobilities over 250 sq cm per v-set were achieved, and single-crystal films were grown as low as 780°C and as

ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow. The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs. MATERIALS TESTED There are only two sources in the United States from which new metal can be procured: the American Magnesium Corpn. and the Dow Chemical Co. No pronounced structural or property differences in the metals from these two companies were disclosed by the work of this investigation. The following materials were obtained from the manufacturers: 1. Massive crystals of distilled metal (American Magnesium Corpn.). 2. Rods of hot-extruded metal, ½ -in. squares and 5/8-in. rounds (American Magnesium Corpn.). 3. Sheet magnesium, 0.005-in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). 4. Cast stick metal, 1 3/8-in. dia. (Dow Chemical Co.). 5. Magnesium-aluminum alloy, hot-rolled plate, ½ in. thick (American Magnesium Corpn.). From these materials, were prepared: 6. Sections from a furnace-cooled ingot made from distilled crystal. 7. Cold-strained pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 8. Pieces cold-squeezed to fracture from (6), (4) and (2). 9. Hammer-struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 10. Steam-hammer struck pieces from (6), (4) and (2). 11. Sections from furnace-cooled ingot of the magnesium-aluminum alloy.

EARLY in 1917, the United States Coal & Coke Co. secured options on several tracts in Harlan County, Ky., aggregating about 1.9,000 acres in area, and after careful prospecting by outcrop openings and diamond drilling, completed the purchase late in July of that year. This property is situated in the eastern end of Harlan County, south of the Poor Fork f Cumberland River, and extending across Big Black Mountain to the Clover Fork of Cumberland River, a distance of about 7 mi. (11.3 kg.). It extends from the Kentucky-Virginia line westward for about 6 mi. Looney Creek, which empties into Poor Fork, crosses the property for about 4 mi. (6.4 kg.), and as several of the seams within the property outcrop along this stream, it afforded an easy, and the logical, place for development. The property is on the northern side of the geological trough formed by the uplifting of Stone Mountain, on the southern, and Pine Mountain, on the northern side; the northern boundary along Poor Fork is practically at the base of Pine Mountain. This, area has been described in various geological reports.1 The main seam on this property is the one known variously as the "C," Benham, Keokee, Taggart, and Roda; it is, also called, by the Kentucky Geological Survey, the Kellioka seam of the western portion of Harlan County. This seam averages, in this property, about 5 ft. (1.5 m.) in thickness, although local rolls reduce this thickness considerably over small areas; and at the extreme western end of the property the seam splits. A complete discussion of the literature on the subject of the influence of copper on iron and steel will be published elsewhere.' The present paper is concerned especially with the precipitation-hardening of copper steels, and brief mention will be made here only of the work of Kin-near,2,3 Nehl4 and Buchholtz and Koster,5 who alone have studied this phase of the subject. Kinnear found that normalized low-carbon steel castings containing about 1.0 per cent copper on drawing at temperatures in the neighborhood of 530" C. (1000" F.) increased in tensile strength and yield point, with little decrease in ductility. The maximum effect was obtained with about 0.9 to 1.0 per cent copper, and when the copper exceeded 3 per cent no improvement occurred on reheating. Kinnear did not study the effect of time of reheating—an all important factor where precipitation is concerned. Neh1,6 who apparently was unaware of Kinnear's work, recognized the change as due to precipitation and studied the interdependence of time and temperature of reheating, the temperature of the initial solution heat treatment, and the speed of cooling necessary to retain the bulk of the copper in supersaturated solution and to give an increase in hardness and tensile strength on reheating. Nehl found that if the final rolling or forging temperatures exceeded 700" C. (1300" F.) it was not necessary even to normalize the steel, but full precipitation occurred on merely reheating the forged or rolled shapes at 500" C. (930" F.). Buchholtz and Koster7 studied in detail the precipitation-hardening of a mild steel containing 1.0 per cent copper and 0.5 per cent chromium. The Seminole field was first drilled in 1913. During the next 10 years other attempts were made to discover oil in this field, but without encouragement until March, 1926, when the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co. completed NO. 1 Dyer in the Hunton lime for 1100 bbl. On July 16, 1926, the Independent-Garland interests discovered oil in the Wilcox formation when No. 1 T. Fixico came in at 4055 ft. and on Sept. 9, 1926, production reached a peak of 8040 bbl. On Aug. 1, 1927, the daily production of the pools making up the Seminole district amounted to slightly over 500,000 bbl., practically all of which was coming from the Wilcox formation. The Hunton formation has not been very productive of oil, but has maintained a fairly high gas pressure; this formation has been encountered at from 3800 to 4200 ft., below which there is about 100 ft. of Sylvan shale. The shale is underlain by 75 ft. of Viola limestone in a few places in which formation oil has been encountered. Below the Viola lies the upper Simpson formation in which is found the Wilcox sand. The depth of the Wilcox in the Seminole field varies from 3900 to 4500 ft., and initial production has reached as much as 12,000 bbl. The gravity of the oil is about 41° Be. The general practice is to set 6 5/8 -in. casing above the Wilcox and drill in, though in several cases 5 3/16-in. casing has been set for the oil string, and in a few instances, casing as small as 4 3/4 in. has been employed. I HAVE chosen for my subject a mining district which in an article published four years ago I referred to in the following words: "One of the un- usual anomalies of mining development and history is that a district having added thirty or more millions of wealth to a principal mining state, situated within four to six miles of two transcontinental railways and two auto highways, and within 150 miles of the most widely advertised part of the United States, should have been so completely lost sight of that probably not one mining man in ten can tell offhand where it is situated." But this district never was a dead one: it was only slumbering. During the past four months, day by day, it has been emerging from that state of slumber.

A study of the structure of chemically deposited nickel by Goldenstein, Rostoker, Scpssberger, and Gutzeit has been reported recently. In this work it was shown that the nickel deposit produced by the catalytic nickel-reduction process was an amorphous solid. Crystallization occurred at elevated temperatures when the original powder pattern which showed only a diffuse ring with a d-spacing of 2.01A became sharp, revealing nickel and nickel-phosphide lines. The phosphide was indexed provision%lly on a tetragonal lattice of parameters a = 9.01A and c = 4.42A, which is in reasonable agreement with the structure of Ni3P proposed by No-wotny and Henglein.3 The transformation from the amorphous to the solid state occurs abruptly (e.g., after 7 min holding at 400°C) with the evolution of considerably more than 1000 cal per gm-mole. A more detailed analysis of these effects requires a knowledge of the solubility of phosphorus in nickel. Konstanti-now3 mapped out the phase diagram in 1908 but did not determine the solid solubility. The eutectic was placed at 11 pct P and 880°C. The purity of typical catalytic nickel deposits is very high.' Spectrographic analysis for heavier elements showed only trace amounts of aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, lead, and silicon. The term "strace" is a qualitative definition for less than 0.1 pct and probably less than 0.01 pct. Analysis for the interstitial elements yielded 0.04 pct C, 0.0023 pct 0, 0.0005 pct N, and 0.0016 pct H. Some of this material with 7.5 pct P was used in the present work. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys were prepared from carbonyl-nickel shot and a master composition containing 7.5 pct P. Cold-crucible, nonconsumable-arc melting was used.

TWO years ago the Committee on Latin American Education Relations, Mineral Industries Education Division, started a study of mineral industries education in the Latin Americas. Information was obtainable only with great difficulty. Some information was available piecemeal but no complete resume had ever been assembled. Initial assistance was gained from the United States Office of Education and the Pan American Union. This, and first-hand knowledge of the writer, provided a list of colleges and universities which were believed to offer work lead. ing to a degree in one or more branches of the mineral industries. Detailed information could be obtained only by direct contact with each university through air mail service. Questionnaire letters were sent to officials of 34 colleges and universities. Twenty-one gracious replies were received. Fourteen of the colleges and universities concerned offer curricula in mining, five in metallurgy, three in petroleum, seven in geology, one in geographical engineering, one in topographical engineering, and one in geophysics. Two institutions offer advanced training in petroleum engineering. No institution offers any courses under the caption of ceramics or fuel technology.

GEOLOGISTS have been quick to adopt new methods in locating new oil fields and in finding the extensions, laterally or at depth, of the old fields. For most of these new methods he is indebted to the physicist, the engineer, and the chemist, although he has also drawn from such ordinarily unrelated sciences as bacteriology and protozoölogy. These last-named sciences have been of help in problems dealing with the origin of petroleum and, although not of direct application to oil finding, have furnished evidence of value in learning what oil is made from and what are the natural agencies involved in its formation.

THE liquidus line on the phase diagram for temperature versus composition of a binary alloy system, representing the boundary between the homogeneous melt and the heterogeneous melt plus solid, besides showing the minimum casting temperature, is useful in determining eutectic compositions and the presence of phase changes such as peritectic transformations and intermetallic compound formation. The liquidus often is determined by the cooling curves of thermal analysis, but supercooling frequently occurs, so that the temperature values are low. An alternative method, the one employed here, consists of determining the com- position of samples of the melts from heterogeneous alloys that are at equilibrium. With meticulous attention to fundamentals, this method is capable of yielding values limited in precision only by the temperature control and measurement and analyses. APPARATUS By starting, on the one hand, with a supersaturated solution and allowing the excess solute to precipitate, and on the other hand with an undersaturated solution and allowing more of the solute to be dissolved, both processes being carried out at the same temperature, equilibrium may be said to have been approached from both directions; that is, from above and from below. If the analyses show the solutions to contain the same fraction of solute when equilibrium has been approached from above and from below, one is assured that equilibrium has been reached in both determinations. In order to carry out such determinations, it is necessary to have equipment for obtaining and maintaining the proper temperatures; for holding the melt, measuring its temperature, and stirring, sampling and analyzing it. The present work required temperatures from 420° to 900°C. The equipment consisted of: A furnace, which was a vertical alundum tube, 1 ¾ in. diameter inside and 18 in. long, wound with Nichrome resistance wire, surrounded by a 3-in. i.d. alundum tube wound for 5 in. of length near each end, for compensation of end losses. This muffle was contained in an iron shell with Transite end plates, the intervening space being packed with Sil-O-Cel. The outside dimensions of the furnace were 12 in. in diameter by 18 ½ in. in height. Heating current was supplied by three independent variable-voltage transformers (Variac), one connected to each end compensator winding and manually controlled, and one connected to the main winding through a series resistance of 5 ohms. To the Board of' Trustees, United Engineering Society I beg to submit herewith the report of the Treasurer as of December 31, 1907. Your attention is called to the fact that the resources and liabilities, receipts and disbursements statements cover all the financial transactions of the United Engineering Society from its organization up to December 31, 1907. The income and expenses of operating the building during the whole operating period from December 1 to December 31, 1907, somewhat in excess of twelve months, are given. Included in the expenses, amounting in all to $52,647.11, will be found an item entitled "Building Equipment (construction account)." The expenditures under this item were not made for the operating expenses of the building, they represent a construction account, properly speaking, covering expenditures for furnishings and equipment of the building. The Founders' Agreement specifically provides for this class of expenditure under the provision that the Founder Societies shall each be liable for a charge not to exceed $200,000 of principal, which shall include the land and building completed and ready for occupancy, together with the " furnishings, equipment and personal property therein." Certain details of equipment are yet to be supplied, and it. is proposed in the near future to call upon the Founder Societies for an assessment on their respective land and building funds to cover this item of building equipment. Such action would enable the item of $10,039.85 to be transferred to the income account and reduce correspondingly the assessment
