A methodology has been developed for qualitative safety hazard evaluation and quantitative reliability analysis of mine monitoring and control systems. Detailed application of these techniques were made to two commercial monitor/control systems and to a West Virginia University distributed microprocessor-based system. A controlled environmental test was conducted on a set of one of the commercial system's outstations. A software reliability evaluation methodology was also developed and applied.

"Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

This investigation was done to develop a method to predict the lie of coal pillars. It has long since been known that coal pillars deteriorate over time, but there was no method to quantify the deterioration. It was found that the rate of pillar deterioration was essentially a function of two parameters, namely mining height and time. The higher the mining height, the more rapidly the pillars deteriorated. The rate of deterioration is not constant, but decreases exponentially with time. The pillar life should be viewed in conjunction with the safety factor. While the relationship between safety factor and pillar life is ambiguous, the trend is nonetheless for higher safety factor pillars to have longer lives. The safety factor can be used to quantify a failure probability. The pillar life prediction indicates when the pillars which are predicted to fail, can be expected to do so.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft 3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunnelling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-ft) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. An extensive and essential pre-excavation drilling and grouting program was performed in all reaches of the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, located north of San Bernardino, CA. This program supported the advance of two hybrid hard rock TBMs though extremely challenging ground conditions under substantial ground cover and up to 27 bar (900 ft) of ground water pressure. The well known San Andreas Fault lies nearby and has greatly influenced the local geological conditions. This paper will describe the means, methods and materials used throughout the numerous phases of the pre-excavation grouting program. It will also describe many versatile, flexible and innovative drilling and grouting methods and equipment systems utilized to improve performance, save time and costs in constantly changing geological conditions. Considerable lessons learned have been learned while overcoming some extremely formidable ground conditions and safely advancing the tunnels.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5·5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1·0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0·90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60°C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0·24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

The Gekko InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) was unleashed on the World gravity separation market in 1996 and has since sold over 150 units in applications including tin, diamonds, silver, coal, garnet and gold. During the past twelve years the knowledgebase of the best applications and capabilities of the IPJ has greatly increased. Improvements to the original IPJ design have included engineered ceramic ragging in specific gravities from 1.6 to 5.0, full automation and improved designs of feed presentation and tailings and concentrate handling systems. The IPJ has been found to be able to handle a wide feed size range and recover mineral at liberation size without significant addition of water to the mass balance. Test work carried out during full-scale operation of the IPJ has shown the IPJ can recover diamonds down to 0.5 mm, sulfides down to 0.3 mm and gold down to 0.1 mm which greatly expands its application in the mineral processing industry. A significant volume of data now supports the symbiotic benefits of an IPJ and flotation circuit combination to pre-concentrate an ore and minimise downstream processing requirements.

"Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad are two relatively small porphyry copper-type deposits in Yazd Province in central Iran. They are located within the central Iranian volcano-plutonic belt, formed above the collisional convergent margin of the Iranian lithospheric plate from the late Eocene to the Miocene. This paper discusses the geochemical characteristics of the igneous rocks, and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of plutons and alteration phases associated with the Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad deposits. The deposits are spatially associated with igneous complexes that consist of older and barren granites intruded by intermediate-composition granitoids, which are the carriers of Cu mineralization. The granites have relatively high content of Nb, Y, and K, a prominent negative Eu anomaly, and were probably derived from melting of, or contamination of mantle-derived magmas by, continental crust. Porphyritic diorites, quartz monzodiorites, and granodiorites show enrichment in light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in middle rare earth elements, and have no negative Eu anomaly. These intermediate-composition granitoids were derived from melting of the upper mantle or lower crust, and their differentiation was controlled partly by fractionation of hornblende. A pilot K/Ar whole-rock dating study suggests that the pre-ore granites were emplaced in the Oligocene. Dating by the 40Ar/39Ar method of nine samples of secondary biotite and sericitized rocks from drillcore within the mineralized and altered zones in both deposits yielded a well-defined age of ca. 16 Ma. This date is interpreted to be the time of hydrothermal alteration and of porphyry copper type mineralization in this part of Iran."

US mine production of iron ore in 1984 showed some improvements compared to 1983. But reduced demand from the iron and steel industry caused temporary shutdowns of many iron ore mines and pelletizing plants. US raw steel production in 1984 was slightly above 1983, but still at a depressed level. Production was 83 Mt (92 million st), compared with 77 Mt (85 million st) in 1983 and 68 Mt (75 million st) in 1982. Two major production trends continued in 1984. They were the increased production from electric furnaces and the growing use of continuous casters. Electric furnace production included 33.2% of the steel poured in 1984, compared with 31.5% in 1983. Continuous casting was used for 39% of 1984 steel production, compared with 32.1% in 1983. Statistical Process Control Statistical Process Control (SPC) has taken on new proportions in the iron ore and steelmaking industries within the last year. This mathematical technique is used to monitor, control, evaluate, and analyze a manufacturing process. The technique charts variability of important quality parameters. Training and adaptation of SPC techniaues for process control have been initiated at Inland, Steel's Minorca, Pickands-Mather's Hibtac, Cleveland-Cliff's Empire and Sherman operations, and at Reserve Mining. One of these operations has requested its bentonite supplier provide SPC charts on quality specifications. Some of the steelmaking operations (Inland Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Dofasco, LTV Steel, National Steel, Stelco, Weirton Steel, and Wheeling-Pittsburgh) have set up SPC programs within their operations. And they also have insisted that some of their suppliers use SPC. Plant Shutdowns The permanent closure of Stelco's Griffith mine at Red Lake, Ontario, has been delayed by one year. This gives employees more time to adjust. The mine is now set to close in April 1986, instead of April 1985. Sidbec (Canadian government) and its other partners (including British Steel Corp., Quebec Cartier Mining, and US Steel) closed its iron mining operations at Gagnon, Quebec. The pellet plant has been leased to Quebec Cartier. New Iron Ore Operations The massive Carajas iron ore project in Brazil is scheduled to come onstream in Jan. 1986. It is to achieve full-scale commercial shipments by July of that year. The 66% iron crude ore requires only crushing and screening before shipment. The product consists of 83% sinter feed and 17% coarse ore. Annual production capacity will be 32 Mt (35 million st) when the project is completed. Principal customer for the ore is Nippon Carajas Iron Ore Co., a consortium of Japanese steel mills. The Arab Iron & Steel Co. (AISCO) has started up a $US300 million, 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) iron ore pelletizing plant built by Kobe Steel Ltd., at Al Hidd-hide in Bahrain. By 1986, this grate-kiln-cooler plant will supply high quality iron ore pellets to feed direct reduction plants in the immediate Gulf area and Far East markets. Iron ore supplied from Brazil, Peru, India, and Mauritania provides the feed to the pellet plant. Hydrated lime (2%) is used as a burden.

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

The general or macroclimate of the study sites in western North Dakota is characterized by rapid and sometimes extreme daily and day-to-day temperature fluctuations, rainfall patterns which are erratic in spatial and temporal distribution and intensity, generally low relative humidity, plentiful sunshine, nearly continuous air movement, and a relatively short frost-free period. Of particular relevance to plant growth and productivity is the mosaic of microclimates: these microclimates are affected by landform (convex and concave surfaces); exposure; slope angle, length and aspect; soil color, texture and surface cover (litter), and vegetation cover. The most critical plant growth governing factor in this region is available water. It is determined principally by water input (precipitation) and water loss (evapotranspiration) which is increased by high temperatures, wind, and poor litter and vegetation cover. While spring and fall precipitation is generally gentle and soil-soaking summer rains frequently come in the form of intensive, soil-washing, localized convective thunderstorms of short duration. Due to the convective nature of these storms, summer rainfall is particularly affected by regional topography; southwest slopes and crests often receive more rainfall since these storms usually move in a northeasterly direction. The water loss due to runoff and consequent soil erosion arc major problems resulting from such "cloudbursts". Previous fall precipitation (September - October) when added to current seasonal precipitation (March - August) was found to be significantly correlated (r-.93) with plant production. Winter precipitation (snowfall) is relatively light as the prevailing weather is dominated by dry polar air masses from the north. The nearly continuous wind is responsible for removing snow from open exposures and depositing it in depressions and windbreaks. Although the winter precipitation is not a large component of the total annual precipitation, conservation of that which does occur would contribute to plant production during the following growing season. Generally clear skies over the region facilitate receipt of abundant sunshine at the earth's surface. While good for early season soil warming and plant photosynthesis, this abundant sunshine coupled with long days and nearly continuous wind is responsible for evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation by an average of six inches between June' and September. On a local (micro) scale, the water deficit is most severe on the southern exposures which receive the most direct (most effective) solar radiation and therefore are warmer than other exposures. On a broader scale, it was found that ambient temperature extremes were slightly but significantly greater in the town of Beulah in the Knife River Valley than at the upland test sites, This may have been due to the difference in topography and/or the "urban heat island" effect. It is known that air temperatures in large cities may be 2° to 4°C higher than that of the surrounding countryside. It is also well known that basins, depressions or valleys are sinks for cold air masses and are often subject to frosts not occurring on adjacent upland sites.

This report presents the results of the economic analysis of several applicable alternatives to increase airflow in four underground coal mines. Pressure-quantity surveys were conducted underground and measurements were also made at the main mine fan(s). The existing ventilation networks were modeled using the modified Penn State ventilation simulator. The applicable alternatives were simulated. Performance data obtained from these simulation runs were utilized to conduct the cost-effectiveness analysis. The costs for each of the alternatives included capital, operating and maintenance costs. These costs were expressed as annual ventilation costs per active section in terms of dollars per elm taking into account the economic life associated with each of the alternatives. The benefits were expressed as increased airflow quantity in the critical sections. A section of this report also deals with comparison of simulator predicted air quantity values against air quantity values measured underground. The computer outputs for each simulation run are presented in Volume II of this report.

A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. One of the most important requirements to be met by any coal producer is delivery of size consists tailored to specific applications. Generally these specifications include a minimum as well as a maximum size limit. The customers of a major Indiana coal producer noticed that some shipments of sized coal contained a large proportion of undersize pieces. Also, in these shipments, the pieces which remained within the specified limits were cracked and, when handled, crumbled readily. The producer, certain that these shipments had been properly sized at the tipple, suspected that degradation had occurred in transit. The Indiana Geological Survey was requested to examine the coal from one of these shipments to attempt to determine the cause of breakage. Two basic facts about coal and coal seams led to the employment of petrographic techniques in this investigation. First, all coal seams consist of accumulations of diverse organic and inorganic constituents; and second, most coal breakage, either desirable or undesirable, can be attributed to the inherent weakness of some of these constituents or to poor adhesion between certain constituents. Analyses of degraded coal Sampling: Samples were secured from 2 stock piles of 2-by 4-inch coal in a dealer's yard. The coal in both piles had received the same treatment from mining to storage, although it had been mined and shipped on two different days. The size consist of one pile, however, appeared smaller than that of the other. The sample from the degraded pile is referred to as the slack sample, and the other is called the unslack sample. Size analyses: In order to determine the actual size consist, the samples were screened, with a minimum of rough handling, on square 2-inch, 1-inch, 1/2-inch, and 12-mesh screens. It is assumed that 100 percent of the 2-by 4-inch coal is retained on a 2-inch round screen at the tipple. Analyses of several loads at the tipple indicate that approximately 26 percent of the 2- by 4-inch coal, 100 percent of which was assumed held on a 2-inch round screen, passed through a 2-inch square screen. Twenty-six percent may be taken as the normal difference between round and square screens. Results of the analyses of stockpile coal are shown in Table 1. Cumulative percent versus size are plotted on a Rosin-Rammler chart as Figure 1. Both samples approximately follow normal size distribution; this indicates that breakage is not size preferential and also that the samples are representative of the stockpiles. Although both samples exhibit the same general size distribution, the median size of the slack sample is considerably smaller than that of the unslack sample. Fifty-five percent of the unslack sample was undersize (29 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference), and 83 percent of the slack sample was undersize (57 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference). Both piles contained a greater percentage than normal of undersize coal; this indicates that they were both affected by degradation, but to a different degree. Bedding-plane analyses: Coal, because of its laminated nature, will break preferentially along bedding planes, especially where adjacent constituents are poorly cemented to each other. Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINETAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress-strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory-scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle () for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

The use of piled raft foundations for tall buildings has been increasing in this decade as it is an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations. Piled rafts are composite structures comprised of the piles, raft and soil and so soil-structure interaction is important in computing the behaviour of the foundation. In this paper, the behaviour of piled rafts subjected to non-uniform loadings will be examined where the raft is supported by piles of different lengths. Finite layer techniques are used for the analysis of the horizontally layered soils and finite element techniques are used for the analysis of the raft and piles. This method accounts for the soil-structure interaction and the lateral resistance of the soil on the piles and raft. Results provided from the present method are compared with the results of a full 3D finite element analysis.

During 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized zones to evaluate the mineral resources and potential of the Funeral Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Inyo County, California. Eleven mineral properties and two mineralized zones were examined during this study. Of these, six are within the study area and seven adjacent. There are no active mines, in the WSA, nor is there evidence of past production from any claim within the study area. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources. However, occurrences of bentonite, zeolites, and strontium were found in the area. There is little likelihood for resource development of any occurrence in the WSA. The area, in the Basin and Range Physiographic Province, is dominated by a Paleozoic marine sequence. Segments of Tertiary continental fluviolacustrine sediments, including volcaniclastic rocks, abut and overlie the Paleozoic rocks in fault controlled basin areas. Significant concentrations of bentonitic clay and zeolites occur as alteration products in Tertiary tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. However, they are generally low-grade, thin, and discontinuous, precluding commercial development. Limestone, quartzite, and sand and gravel in the area are suitable for many types of construction uses, but similar deposits outside the WSA are closer to markets. No energy resources have been identified in the WSA.
