In developing countries, high levels of particle pollution from the use of coal and biomass fuels for household cooking and heating are a major cause of ill health and premature mortality. The cost and complexity of existing monitoring equipment, combined with the need to sample many locations, make routine quantification of household particle pollution levels difficult. Recent advances in technology, however, have enabled the development of a small, portable, data-logging particle monitor modified from commercial smoke alarm technology that can meet the needs of surveys in the developing world at reasonable cost. Laboratory comparisons of a prototype particle monitor developed at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) with gravimetric filters, a tapered element oscillating microbalance, and a TSI DustTrak to quantify the UCB particle monitor response as a function of both concentration and particle size and to examine sensor response in relation to changes in temperature, relative humidity, and elevation are presented here. UCB particle monitors showed good linearity in response to different concentrations of laboratory-generated oleic acid aerosols with a coarse (mass median diameter, 2.1 µm) and fine (mass median diameter, 0.27-0.42 µm) size distributions (average r2 = 0.997 ± 0.005). The photoelectric and ionization chamber showed a wide range of responses based on particle size and, thus, require calibration with the aerosol of interest. The ionization chamber was five times more sensitive to fine rather than coarse particles, whereas the photoelectric chamber was five times more sensitive to coarse than fine. The ratio of the response between the two sensors has the potential for mass calibration of individual data points based on estimated parameters of the size distribution. The results demonstrate the significant potential of this monitor, which will facilitate the evaluation of interventions (improved fuels, stoves, and ventilation) on indoor air pollution levels and research on the impacts of indoor particle levels on health in developing countries.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.

The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

Geochemical studies of the bauxite deposits show that the primary composition is gibbsitic. Some trace elements were relatively mobile during bauxite formation with the content of Th, U and Zr increasing and that of Rb, Ni and Co decreasing. Y and Pb were relatively immobile during lateritisation; their contents and ratios were inherited from different types of underlying rocks. The supply of Ni and Co took place at the diagenetic or epigenetic stages; their ultimate source was the crystalline basement in the region. The studies support the view that the bauxite was likely to have originated as a result of in-situ lateritisation and not through sedimentary transport and redeposition

Recent literature is reviewed with emphasis on the design and scale up of mixers. Most important aspects of mixing have resulted from the study of Newtonian fluids and only a minor attempt has been made to extend the work to non-Newtonian materials.The rheology of non-Newtonian materials is outlined and the typical behaviour of mineral slurries is indicated.The importance of flow velocity, flow pattern, and fluid turbulence is discussed with relation to suspension of solids and rate of reaction.Data on experimental leaching of ore from Mary Kathleen, Queensland, show the effect of different mixing impellers.In conclusion, factors involved in the selection of a mixer are presented with emphasis on economic appraisal after pilot experimentation.INTRODUCTIONThe subject of mixing has attracted considerable attention during recent years, but relatively little work has been undertaken for the study of non-Newtonian materials. Most work has been restricted to Newtonian fluids because there are less inconsistencies in such study.Mixing, by definition, implies blending or combining, and ranges from gentle mixing which blends the contents of a large tank in 24 hours to violent mixing which completely homogenises the contents of a tank within seconds. Metzner and Otto (1957) have pointed out the present lack of knowledge on the degree (or quality) of mixing. Apart from this fact the design of mixers for Newtonian materials would seem to be reasonably certain.Both capital and operating costs rise rapidly with increasing mixer size. Therefore the design, or selection, of a mixer is a matter for economic consideration in the overall aspect of plant design and operation.

A pilot installation built at SveDeFo is described. During the course of evaluations by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Roof Control Division, the controls on ground instability were investigated at surface and underground limestone mines throughout the eastern and southern United States. Structural geologic features, including joints and faults, were identified by basic geologic mapping as primary controls on highwall and back instability in surface and underground limestone mines. By comparing the spatial orientation of discontinuities and internal angle of friction with the orientation of highwalls on a stereonet, the potential for sliding, toppling, and raveling failures was evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion. Structural geologic mapping identified faults and joints, which dismembered the back and were associated with ground instability, in underground mines. This paper documents the importance of recognizing structural geologic controls on ground stability in limestone mines, advocates basic geologic mapping as a critical component of ground control programs at surface and underground limestone mines, and provides examples of simple stability evaluations using the stereonet method.

You’ve probably heard the old expression, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” But the adage doesn’t seem to hold much water when it comes to making a telephone call on the road. Thirty years ago, a “powder hound” had to stop his 2-wheel drive vehicle at either a roadside diner or a telephone booth to make a call using a public telephone. But, fast-forward to 2007, and a contemporary “explosives engineer” driving his or her 4-wheel drive vehicle simply makes a call “on-the-fly.” The fundamental difference between these two eras is the result of the introduction and the proliferation of cellular or wireless technology. On the one hand, this fundamental difference is much welcomed in the form of personal and business conveniences; and improved productivity. On the other hand, this fundamental difference creates a new set of un-welcomed conditions causing a potential “digital danger.”

Impala Platinum?s No.16 Shaft mine is currently under construction and is expected to reach full production of 256 500 tons per month by 2014. Mining will start at 1 260 m below surface with a maximum mining depth of 1 535 m where virgin rock temperatures of 56.6°C will be experienced. As a result of depth, high virgin rock temperature and narrow reef mining, an expected total of 31.5 MW[R] of air cooling capacity will be required to achieve acceptable underground conditions. This will be achieved by cooling mine intake air in a single dedicated air cooling installation located on surface. The compact installation includes air cooling spray chamber, refrigeration machines, condenser cooling towers, evaporator and condenser water reticulation as well as all electrical and control systems. Construction and commissioning of the first phase of this air cooling installation has recently been completed on a turn-key contract basis.

Discharge vessels of advanced light sources are made of translucent polycrystalline Al2O3(PCA).These tubes contain salt mixtures, which essentially consist of metal halides. The salt mixture is present as a melt at the coldest spot of the vessel under operating conditions and vaporizes partly. The temperatures of the coldest spot range between 1200 K and 1300 K, depending on the lamp performance. The maximum wall temperatures range up to 1500 K and for special purposes up to1700 K. Important constituents of the melt are alkali halides AX (A = Na, Cs, X= Br, I) and rare earth metal halides LnX3(Ln = Dy, Ho, Tm). Severe corrosion attack on the wall material is observed in the PCA discharge vessels. The aim of this work is to elucidate the corrosion mechanism. Annealing experiments under well defined temperatures were carried out in order to understand the complex chemical corrosion processes. Two different annealing vessels were used, one for experiments under isothermal conditions with a temperature of 1473 K and one for experiments with a linear temperature gradient from 1450 K to 1600 K. The vessels were filled with salt mixtures of different compositions and annealed for 1000 h. The corrosion attack was characterised by XRD, analytical electron microscopy, high temperature mass spectrometry, and chemical analysis of the salt melts. The results of our investigations show that the corrosion attack is caused by vapour species and by the salt melt. The most severe corrosion is observed in vessels filled with mixtures of alkali halides and rare earth metal halides. No corrosion of the alumina is practically observed if pure alkali halides or pure rare earth metal halides are present in the annealing vessel. The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

The kcICON design-build project in Kansas City, Missouri includes widening the existing roadway, improving interchanges and grade separation bridges, and replacing the Missouri River Bridge. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) typically utilizes steel H-piles and steel pipe piles as driven pile support for bridges. After bidding the kcICON project, the cost of steel rose significantly and the design-build contractor used an innovative approach to reduce foundation costs without significantly affecting the project schedule. The kcICON team conducted a value engineering evaluation of alternative foundation types for use at four grade separation structures. The result of the value engineering evaluation was selection of precast, pre-stressed concrete (PPC) piles as the preferred foundation alternative. Terracon developed a test program to evaluate the performance, capacity, and suitability of PPC piles at the site using a PDA and CAPWAP analyses. This paper presents the value engineering design, rationale for selection of PPC piles, results of the pile test program, and findings during production pile driving. The collaborative approach to the project by MoDOT and the kcICON team, combined with testing and a site-specific design approach, resulted in substantial savings for the design-build contractor.

Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

This paper reviews advances in the art of borehole (slurry) mining made by the Bureau of Mines from 1974 to 1980. The design of a proto-type borehole-mining tool (BMT) developed by the Bureau of Mines is pre-sented along with production data, reclamation data, and an application of the BMT to the mining of coal, uraniferous sandstone, oil sands, and phosphate ore. The BMT was first used near Wilkeson, WA, where steeply pitching metallurgical coal was mined at 8 st/h from a depth of 25 to 75 ft. Next, 940 st of uraniferous sandstone was mined at 8 st/h from a depth of 75 to 100 ft in Natrona County, WY. One thousand short tons of oil sands was mined in Kern County, CA, at the rate of 14 st/h from a depth of 110 to 150 ft in 1979. Most recently, 1,700 st of phosphate ore was produced at 25 st/h from deep (230-to 250-ft) deposits in St. Johns County, FL. Progressive improvements were made in the borehole mining technique. These include the use of the hydrostatic head of a water-filled borehole for roof support, and the development of methods to survey and backfill mined-out cavities.

Considerable basic information has been obtained in the course of this study, and the results have been made known to the public through various publications listed in the accompanying bibliography The studies have been confined to obtaining fundamental knowledge of the characteristics of the vibrations themselves, because it was evident at once that he problem was extremely complicated. It was felt that any attempt to predict the effect of a ground vibration on any type of artificial structure would be useless until the complexities of building vibrations are better understood. As opportunity offered, teats wore made in various types of structures and the effects of vibrations from many different sources were measured. In one set of tests (5)4/, it was demonstrated that the behavior of a building as quite different if it was shaken by vibrations originating outside tae foundation walls than if the source of the vibrations was within the building; vibrations coming from the ground outside seemed to shake the building as a single, loosely-coupled structure, whereas mechanically induced vibrations within the house seemed to set floors and walls in motion as independent units, each of which communicated its own natural motion to the adjoining member, causing a very complicated movement that was impossible to interpret.

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a remote sensing technique using active backscatter. This technique is applicable to the testing for faults and multiple partial faults on cable. The battery operated hardware developed on this con¬tract has tailored this technique for testing of mining equipment trailing electrical cables. The processing of-t-he back-scatter is accomplished using a microprocessor. The visual output from the hardware to the operator is; the type, magnitude and distance to the cable fault in a numerical format. This greatly simplifys the use of this techniques for the operator.

This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?('l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anoionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solutions of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solution is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.
