The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 limits to 2 milligrams per cubic meter (for dust containing a maximum of 5% quartz) the average respirable dust concentration to which individual miners may be exposed. Section 205 of the Act directs that an appropriate exposure formula for dusts with quartz content in excess of 5% be established. This formula, entered in F. R. Document 70-12351 filed September 16, 1970, is 10 milligrams per cubic meter divided by % quartz. Thus, the total respirable dust exposure permitted limits the quartz to a maximum of 100 micrograms. For example, if % quartz is 5%, 10 mg/5 = 2 milligrams, and (.05) (2 mg) = 100 micrograms. Similarly, if % quartz is 10%, 10/10 = 1, and (.10) (1 mg) = 100 micrograms, etc. If the % quartz is less than 5%, the 2 mg/M3 limit prevails.

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. The first three, Bulletins 486,' 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1980. The other

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the' production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire atten¬tion of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

Frictional ignitions (also called face ignitions) is defined as the rapid oxidation of a mixture of methane and air with a visible flame that could last from a few seconds to several minutes. These ignitions have a potential to turn into a mine explosion and eventually a large-scale mine fire. Over the last 22 years, U.S. coalmines have had 1566 frictional ignitions. There were no fatalities but serious injuries have occurred. Every effort, therefore, should be made to prevent frictional ignitions. The preventative measures fall under four categories: (a) degasification of coal seams prior to mining, (b) adequate ventilation, (c) wet cutting or water-jet assisted cutting and (d) machine design to minimize ignitions. The paper discusses each of these techniques in detail.

Steam zone growth as a function of time has been calculated for the case of constant rate steam injection into a preheated reservoir. To simplify the calculation a linear temperature profile has been assumed in the cap and base rock at the start of steam injection. The results indicate that at early times augmentation of steam zone growth due to preheating should be greatest. At longer times the steam zone development becomes close to that calculated with no preheating. INTRODUCTION With the increasing application of thermal recovery processes to recover viscous oil, cyclic steam injection has become important in many large-scale projects. In this process, the cycle of steam injection followed by oil production is repeated a number of times. At the beginning of the second and later cycles, steam is injected into a reservoir that has already been heated but that has lost part of its heat both in produced fluids and by conductive heat loss away from the injection zone. In such a case, the temperature level of the injection zone and the temperature distribution of the surrounding rock will affect the growth of the steam zone developed during the subsequent steam injection. Knowledge of the size of steam zone developed is important in determining the amount of oil displaced and the extent of heating in the reservoir. It is also useful to be able to compute the size of the steam zone for cases where thief zones take most of the injected steam. This paper presents a fairly straightforward method of estimating the steam zone developed in a preheated formation, based on certain simplifying assumptions. Some cases of steam injection into a reservoir at its original temperature have already been considered elsewhere.1-3 Because it is difficult or impossible to obtain an accurate representation of the temperature distribution in the reservoir some time after initial heating has taken place, in this work, a linear temperature profile in the cap and base rock is assumed (Figs. 1A and 1B). For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. From time to time the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information and advice regarding the safety of using internal-combustion engines operated on butane fuel as prime movers for haulage and other purposes in mining and tunneling. The purpose of this, circular is to discuss the properties of butane and to present data in regard to the possible use of this fuel in underground operations. Published information on the use of commercial butane as a fuel for internal-combustion engines indicates that, insofar as performance is concerned, butane may be utilized satisfactorily and efficiently for this purpose. However, the introduction of a volatile, inflammable material such as butane into confined spares such as mines or tunnels would create potential fire and explosion hazards that should be given due consideration by those concerned with the promotion of safe practices.

This study has appraised available deeper soil loosening equipment in the 1-4 ft. depth range, in the U.S. and abroad which has potential for Illinois prime farm-land reclamation. The appraisal was based on written and/or oral contacts with equipment manufacturers, reclamation experts, and visiting with selected equipment manufacturers. The results indicate that several manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory deeper soil loosening equipment which may have potential for application in Illinois. The pertinent information concerning each equipment with potential is presented in this report.

Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

Each year hundreds of mineral specimens and numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic substances are received by the Bureau of Mines. In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.
