The collection of hydrophobic particles in the froth phase in flotation has been studied. A continuous flotation cell was developed, in which the froth phase could be isolated from the pulp zone. Hematite particles, d80 = 87 µm, were floated in the pulp, using a conventional oleate collector, while glass spheres of similar diameter, d80 = 82 µm, were introduced in wash water added to the froth. Four samples of glass spheres, with contact angles between 0 and 82 degrees, were used. The results indicate that the efficiency of collection of the hydrophobic particles in the froth can be very high. The process is strongly influenced by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the surface area available for attachment in the froth. Recommendations for the flotation of particles in the froth phase are made, especially regarding the desirable hydrophobicity as reflected in the contact angle, the froth depth, the solids concentration in the feed to the froth, the air rate and the wash water rate.

This paper is a discussion of the causes of deflagration in cast blasting and a description of a project intended to demonstrate how changes in six critical parameters contribute to the deflagration chemical reaction. Control of these parameters is key to solving the nitrogen dioxide “orange smoke” problem. Preliminary results of an investigation into the development of a technology addressing the problem of atmospheric releases of nitrogen dioxide during cast blasting in surface mine operations are described. The project is funded by a $600,000 Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Science Foundation and an $80,000 Abandoned Coal Mine Land Reclamation Program grant from the state of Wyoming. The presentation will address the measures required to control the blast chemical reaction so that it does not produce nitrogen dioxide through deflagration. Experimental blast data will be focused on a new shaped charge detonation system designed to instantaneously bring the powder column to maximum velocity of detonation (VOD), thus insuring efficient detonation of the entire colulnn.

Among the different sources of uncertainty in pile bearing capacity prediction including inherent heterogeneity, measurement and model uncertainties, the inherent heterogeneity of soil properties is of particular interest and is considered in this study. Cone tip resistance data are utilized to calculate pile bearing capacity by considering vertical soil variability. In this regard, cone tip resistance component of CPT data is assumed as a random parameter. Realizations of this parameter are achieved with the aid of local average subdivisions and random field theories. Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate different realizations of CPT or CPT-u data. Pile bearing capacity was then calculated by the use of direct method. Pile bearing capacity are predicted for a project in south of Iran using this method and probability density function for the total bearing capacity of pile is plotted. Coefficient of variation of 33% for ultimate bearing capacity shows the variability of bearing capacity due to variation of soil strength in depth. Cumulative probability chart for the ultimate bearing capacity are plotted as an efficient tool for estimating ultimate bearing capacity of piles with different desired confidence levels for vertically variable soil strength properties. Significant difference between mean value of pile bearing capacity (18 MN) and limit with 95% confidence level (8 MN) emphasizes the importance of considering soil variability.

Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

Many of the worldÆs larger iron ore deposits are hosted by rock sequences of Archaean to early Proterozoic age. Most models for the genesis of these deposits are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the nature of the atmosphere at the time of their formation, and more specifically by the presence or absence of oxygen in the early atmosphere. Since the early-1950s, the geological literature suggests that the Archaean atmosphere was æreducingÆ, and that it may not have contained significant amounts of free oxygen until ca 2 Ga. There are many different definitions of the term æreducingÆ, but the criterion adopted here is whether crustal iron was limited to Fe2+, or whether Fe3+ was also widespread, ie was there scope for redox changes in the state of iron? Significantly, major Australian banded iron formations span this period of inferred atmosphere transition, eg Mt Goldsworthy, Mt Tom Price, Middleback Ranges. Geological evidence for a reducing Archaean atmosphere is both ambiguous and controversial (see review by Phillips, Law and Myers, 2001). Many earlier ideas (eg no Archaean redbeds; all very large iron ore deposits being post-Archaean) have been disproved by dating, whereas other evidence (eg homogeneous detrital gold grains, inferred palaeosols) has not withstood geological scrutiny. The interpretation of some data sets (eg inferred detrital uraninite and pyrite in some Archaean meta-sedimentary rocks) is still controversial. In fact, some lines of evidence now suggest that oxygen was present in the atmosphere well before 2.5 Ga (eg sulfates in the Pilbara craton, carbon distribution in clastic sedimentary rocks). An oxidising Archaean atmosphere has important implications for the development of iron formations. First, the atmosphere is an obvious potential source of oxygen to stabilise ferric iron minerals. Second, reduced fluids in equilibrium with ferrous iron are commonly inferred to transport iron in solution to the depositional site. The redox state of the atmosphere thus provides critical constraints on the solution chemistry of surface waters, effective transport paths for iron and particularly on viable precipitation mechanisms. Iron formations developed from fluids in equilibrium with the atmosphere also have the potential to provide important constraints on the evolution of EarthÆs early atmosphere. If an oxygenated atmosphere is a necessary condition for the development of iron formations, then the Archaean atmosphere must have been oxidising since at least 3.5 Ga. If the redox state of the atmosphere is not a necessary condition, then the time distribution of iron formations cannot be used to provide constraints on atmospheric evolution. Given these uncertainties, models for the genesis of iron ore deposits of Archaean or early Proterozoic age should not rely on a reducing atmosphere in the absence of independent evidence and the alternative of an oxidising atmosphere should also be considered.

Several large falls of ground occur annually in the narrow, tabular stopes mined in the Bushveld Complex. These falls comprise safety risks and cause substantial production losses and compromise efforts to increase productivity. Underground observations in conjunction with instrumentation sites were used to establish the strategic parameters required to describe the rock mass behaviour of shallow-dipping stopes on the Bushveld platinum mines. Existing rock mass rating systems were evaluated using the observations and instrumentation results. None of the current systems adequately described all the relevant geotechnical conditions. Thus a hybrid of several current systems was developed, and the proposed system is discussed in the paper. The new rock mass rating system is termed the ?New Modified Stability Graph? system and follows the method originally described by Mathews et al.1and revised by Hutchinson and Diederichs2.Changes have been made to some of the tables provided by Barton3and to the stress analysis suggested by Hutchinson and Diederichs2. In addition, the logistical regression analysis has been applied to databases, formed using the suggested analyses, for three support resistances and risk levels established.

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

Session 2, Deep Foundation without Soil Excavation, has attracted no fewer than 22 papers dealing with subjects from soil improvement by grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques through vibroflotation and special piles, including aspects pertaining to conventional driven and bored piles. In the short time available, it is not possible to both do justice to the papers and provide a critical review of the state-of-the-art. Instead, to meet the objective of making the next half hour worthwhile to the audience, I have chosen to comment on a few special points brought forward in the papers and thereafter to discuss more in detail a couple of aspects I have deemed to be of general interest. Four papers deal with jet-grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques: DOMSKI, J. J. Reinforcement of subsoil under the foundations of historical buildings in Cracow using deep injection technique. RESTELLI, A. B, BERTERO, M., and LODIGIANI, E. Deep mixing technology to improve the bearing capacity of a very soft clayey soil under an earth embankment.

Thallium is an uncommon heavy metal that may be found in concentrations that exceed regulatory limits in mining influenced water associated with processing cadmium, copper, gold, lead, and zinc ores. This study evaluated cost-effective modifications to lime precipitation treatment to reduce thallium concentrations to below the EPA drinking water MCL of 2 ppb. The oxidative precipitation of Tl+ to Tlß+ by potassium permanganate was explored for thallium removal at low concentrations (1 ppm initial thallium). Laboratory batch tests were performed to evaluate the removal of thallium from synthetic solutions. Three ratios of potassium permanganate to oxidizable metals in solution were used (one-half, one and two times stoichiometry). Thallium was removed to less than 1 ppb for all stoichiometric ratios evaluated within 10 minutes of reaction. The efficacy of oxidative precipitation for thallium removal is presented.

"This paper considers the duty cycle of an electric cable shovel and correlations with measured passive seismic responses of the underfoot oil sands material in-pit. It has been observed that the cyclic activity during operation of any shovel in the oil sands environment causes the material to deteriorate and provide a less than ideal footing for this large item of equipment, whose dead weight approaches 1500 tons with a footprint of merely 75 sq. yd. Consequences are manifested in the form of carbody and side frame cracks, and associated downtime, maintenance activity, cost, and subsequent loss of availability.The objective of these considerations, as part of the Oil sands-Equipment Interaction Program (OsEIP), currently a joint venture between Syncrude Canada Ltd., James Progithin International (JPi) Ltd., Caterpillar Inc., P&H MinePro and the University of Alberta, is to identify and provide feedback to the manufacturer and end user of adverse shovel-ground conditions. This would enable the manufacturer to incorporate greater knowledge into the design process and the end user to direct operations in an enhanced proactive maintenance stance."

"Les Mines Selbaie have been producing copper and zinc concentrates from the A-1 ore zone since 1986. This paper reviews major developments in flotation practice over that period. Firstly, ore blending strategies for Selbaie's non-homogeneous polymetallic ore are discussed. The evolution of reagent use is then reviewed, focussing on copper collector trials. A description of Selbaie's flotation columns follows. Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc opened Canada?s first diamond mine, the Ekati Diamond Mine TM (Ekati) in the Northwest Territories on October 14th, 1998. Four short years later on November 29th, 2002, saw the opening of North America?s first underground diamond mine - the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today. Underground mining represents a key component of the long term business plan for the Ekati. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at Ekati . In addition to being a production source for the operation, Koala North is designed as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the future. Fortuitously Koala North was available for development so the learnings could be integrated into the Panda mine design prior to completion of the Panda pit. Establishing our first underground diamond mine, and applying the open benching mining method in arctic conditions brings a unique combination of mining challenges together in a harsh climate and remote environment. This paper examines the design and establishment of the Koala North mine. Discussion includes experiences gained from the first year of development, production start-up, and provides a brief overview of our potential underground future at Ekati .

Smarter Gravity Separation Using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig With relatively coarse grained and easy-to-process ore sources rapidly dwindling, smarter techniques are becoming more necessary for the continued success of mineral processing operations, while increasing environmental pressures also require more environmentally friendly solutions. Gravity concentration has long been employed to pre-concentrate minerals using water, reducing or eliminating the need for less environmentally friendly processing techniques such as flotation. Conventional gravity recovery devices however, operate in a 1 g environment with limited efficiency in the separation of fine particles of heavy and gangue minerals. More recently developed centrifugal concentrators operate in a multi-g environment and enable finer heavy minerals to be recovered, but also exhibit limited separation efficiency due to the separations being based on solid particle mass differentials. Further enhancement of gravity separation has been achieved using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ), which also operates in a multi-g environment, but separates minerals on the basis of specific gravity differentials, using 'ragging' media and a pulsation mechanism, which maximises the effect of differential particle accelerations. This enables the efficient separation/recovery of minerals down to a particle size of ~6 ¦m and/or separation of minerals with a low specific gravity differential. This paper presents details on the principals of operation of the KCJ, recent improvements in the technology and recent developments in modular KCJ plants, as well as some KCJ application areas, which offer smarter, environmentally friendly processing opportunities for the mineral processing industry.

During sonic logging quality control testing of the drilled shaft foundations for the replacement bridges crossing the Broad and Chechessee Rivers for SC 170 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, irregular signals were observed on a consistent basis near the shaft top elevations. These irregular sonic signals were attributed to access tube ?debonding?, which is the separation of the access tubing from the surrounding concrete. A total of 160 drilled shafts were installed for this project, of which 41 were evaluated using sonic logging testing. Both PVC and steel access tubes were used during the project to allow for sonic logging testing. This paper details the investigation of access tube debonding with time, discusses the solutions used to minimize access tube ?debonding?, and presents the results of the sonic logging testing for the entire project. The solution selected, installation of PVC along the pile length and steel access tubing within 40 feet from the top of shaft, allowed for reliable sonic logging to effectively evaluate the upper portions of the drilled shafts.

On April 1, 1982, the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy entered into an Interagency Agreement to develop an enhanced computer cost model for uranium in situ leach mining. The original computer cost model contained data base information related to two regions; the Wyoming basin region and the South Texas trend area. The enhanced cost model contains additional information on San Juan Basin type deposits. This addition is significant because it expands the model's capabilites to include one of the largest uranium producing areas in the United States and developes costs related to uranium production from in situ leach mining. The data base was expanded and modified to include changes necessary for San Juan basin type deposits. These changes included, but were not limited to, state and local taxes, royalty payments, depth of deposits, drilling costs, and electrical costs. Also site visits were taken to verify many of the base case parameters. Consequently, the data base has been incorporated into the computer program and existing software was modified to provide for the additional data. Information was obtained on drilling coats and therefore the current program more accurately reflects these costs to depths of 2500 feet. This depth parameter has been expanded to include Wyoming Basin and South Texas scenarios also. Verbal communications were held with one operator in the Crownpoint, New Mexico area as well as the state regulatory agencies to help validate the expanded model. As a result of these changes, several tables have been included, summarizing changes in the new default parameters and the overall range of input parameters.

Business says that location is a primary component of being successful. So too is the importance of location in blasting. For blast seismograph data to be useful, the location of the blast and seismograph must be clearly documented. Another location of importance is that of a nearby structure. Establishing the spatial relationships between the blast, seismograph and nearby structures, allows the blaster to correctly interpret the data, evaluate the performance of the blast and gauge the validity of any complaints.

Because of their chemical reactivity and affinity for oxygen, rare-earth elements are difficult to extract, and due to their close chemical similarity, it is an exacting task to separate one from the other. Nevertheless, these same characteristics can be used to benefit other metals by enhancing their resistance to high-temperture oxidation/corrosion and by inhibiting their corrosion in aqueous environments. This paper gives an overview of the use of rare-earths: [a] as alloy additions, [b] in coatings, and [c] when added to hostile environments, to retard rates of high- temperature oxidation and inhibit aqueous corrosion.

The comments contained in the discussion of the paper concerning the prediction of fracture gradients are of considerable interest, since the subject is of a very controversial and timely nature. It is regrettable and Fairhurst2 contradicts the author's statement in the third paragraph of Other Applications. These references create significant doubt that Eaton's Eq. 1 predicts fracture pressure during the injection of fluid into old wells. 3. No evidence is presented in this paper to support the author's Conclusions 2 and 3. While an empirical coefficient related to back-calculated field data is correlated with depth (Eaton's Fig. 4), there is no reason to suspect that this coefficient might be the Poisson's ratio of the various formations involved. 4. Until the field data supporting the empirical approach proposed by the author are presented and evaluated, the accuracy claimed in Conclusion 5 is without substantiation. References 1. As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Des changements considérables dans les variables sismiques ont été observés dans des intervalles d’extraction entre 100 et 120 mètres, ce qui pourrait être significatif pour l’espacement des piliers dans la conception de la disposition des mines de fond. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht.
