The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

Bochum’s Underground Lot 306 was characterised by a confined site and unique tunnelling methods. A highly mechanized construction concept was developed to achieve high progress rates. Bespoke backup systems for muck disposal and material supply were used. For the first time in suburban tunnelling, wet shotcrete, batched onsite, was applied. A three-storey underground car park had to be undermined with only1.5 m of overburden and had to be lifted several times by “compensation grout in.” An existing operational two-lane metro tunnel was enlarged without any major impact on train operation.

There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

The research objective was to determine the effect of vanadium alloy additions on the oxidation behavior of cobalt-nickel Alloys. Eighteen alloys were reacted with 0 2 at 0.5 arm and 1,351°, 1,389°, and 1,429° K. The alloy compositions consisted of Co-Ni master alloys (0, 22, 50, 70, 91, and 100 wt pct Ni) with V additions of 0, 0.9, and 2.7 wt pct. Large early deviations from, or changes in, the parabolic rate constant were encountered, but the reaction rate in most cases declined approximately in accordance with the parabolic rate law. Relatively, the vanadium degraded the oxidation resistance most at the highest nickel contents. In some cases, melting of the oxide was inferred from microscopic evidence and X-ray diffraction measurements disclosed the presence of low-melting vanadates.

Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. A wide variety of techniques and equipment are available for coring soft or poorly consolidated geological material. This report presents a comprehensive literature review and evaluation of these techniques and equipment. A potential user will find guidelines in this report to assist him in selecting sampling equipment. A bar chart shows what samplers have been used under what geological conditions, and gives the specific literature references. Two matrices rate the present techniques and equipment with respect to reported success for sampling specific materials, and with respect to several performance characteristics including complexity of use and core quality. These matrices are supplemented with tables of typical sampling equipment. and program costs. Near-term future developments are seen primarily in improved training of drillers, and in instrumenting the drilling operation to provide objective data on drilling characteristics. An extensive annotated bibliography, a catalogue of equipment suppliers including specifications and cost ranges, and a list of manufacturers and distributors are appended to the report.

An experimental investigation has been made of gas-driven slug displacements in a system of high gas saturation to evaluate the process for use in a California reservoir. Fluid compositions, temperature, pressure and core permeability duplicated reservoir conditions as closely as possible. The temperature was above the critical of the slug materials. The slug composition required for 100 per cent oil recovery in the linear flow systems was found to agree with that determined from equilibrium phase studies. A qualitative theory for the slug displacement of two-phase systems is proposed and found to be in general agreement with the observed flow behavior. The theory predicts that the length of the reservoir fluid-slug transition Zone will increase with increased initial gas saturation and decrease with increased oil swelling accompanying the composition change from reservoir oil to the critical composition. The precipitation of small amounts of an asphaltic phase during the formation of the transition zone had no adverse effects on the flow behavior of otherwise miscible systems. INTRODUCTION Despite the large number of recent publications relating to oil recovery by miscible displacement, little information is available concerning the behavior of crude oil-natural gas systems at conditions likely to be encountered in field application. The laboratory data reported here were obtained during an investigation of the possibility of using a gas-driven LPG slug in a partially depleted California reservoir. Seven gas-driven slug displacements employing slugs of different compositions and sizes were made in 26- to 27-ft long sandstone cores. The equilibrium phase behavior of the systems was also determined. The features of primary interest in this study are the following. 1. Data were obtained on the displacement of reservoir fluids at reservoir conditions. 2. A high gas saturation existed in the long cores at the start of the displacements. 3. The temperature of the studies was above the critical of the slug materials. 4. A comparison between the flow behavior and equilibrium phase behavior, as illustrated by a pseudo-ternary phase diagram, is afforded for a system of considerable complexity. THEORY Phase Behavior The use of the pseudo-ternary phase diagram to illustrate the phase behavior in miscible displacements has been discussed by Clark, Schultz and Shearin. Sie-vert, Dew and Conley and Arnold, Stone and Luffel' have presented both phase equilibrium and flow data for true ternary systems. For the true ternary, the application of the theory is straight-forward; for a reservoir system represented as a ternary, the theory undoubtedly gives a qualitatively correct picture. One purpose of this investigation was to see if the pseudo-ternary phase diagram could be used to predict with reasonable accuracy the conditions necessary for miscible displacements with actual reservoir systems. The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognised and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economical restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist with respect to the application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

"The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully and efficiently process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals.The KCJ is applicable to a broad range of fine mineral recovery duties, with current installations in the mineral sands, tin, tantalum, gold and nickel industries. Other areas of application are being developed with mineral commodities including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite and apatite/feldspar.Information on the principles of operation of the KCJ, typical performance figures in a number of application areas, comparison to centrifugal concentrators, key elements for a successful KCJ operation and recent developments with the KCJ are presented in this paper to demonstrate the capabilities of the KCJ.INTRODUCTIONAfter a number of years of development by inventor Chris Kelsey, the first commercial KCJ unit was installed at the Renison Bell tin mine in Tasmania, Australia, in 1992. The subsequent decade saw the installation of further KCJ units in applications including tin, tantalum and mineral sands.Development and improvement in KCJ hardware continued and culminated in the introduction of the high-capacity Model J1800 KCJ and standard features such as an automatic screen cleaning system. This opened up further markets and resulted in Model J1800 KCJ installations in the gold and nickel industries, as well as further KCJ installations in the mineral sands and tin industries. In recent years, work has continued on application of the KCJ to many other duties in industries including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite, apatite/feldspar, etc."

INTRODUCTION The first Dispute Review Board (DRB) was utilized on a tunnel project 20 years ago. Increasingly utilized on a wide range of construction projects, DRB's are becoming the norm on tunnel and underground projects. This paper summarizes the growth in this usage, uses observations and experience to establish that barriers to the utilization of DRB's are more perceived than real and that many arguments against the DRB concept are not valid, and notes some of the salient elements that should be considered in practice to optimize DRB effectiveness. The purpose of the paper is to provide an annotated checklist for current and prospective users. The basic concept, structure, and operation of DRB's are described elsewhere and will not be repeated here (ASCE, 1991). DISPUTE REVIEW BOARD USAGE A compilation of Dispute Review Board usage for tunnel and underground projects to January 1994 indicated use on 63 contracts with a cumulative construction value of $3.8 billion and a total of 60 disputes settled. As of that same date, DRB's were planned for another 63 contracts with an estimated construction value of $4.7 billion. (A listing of these 126 projects is available from the authors.) This success and popularity have spread to other civil projects as well as process and building construction. The increase in DRB usage has been exponential. See Figure 1.

Mintek was contracted by Oriel Resources plc in 2004 to conduct a preliminary assessment study on smelting ferronickel from the large but relatively low grade Shevchenko nickel ore deposit in Kazakhstan. A detailed feasibility study (?DFS?) was awarded to Bateman BV following promising results from the preliminary assessment study (?PAS?) and small-scale pilot plant test work. As part of the DFS, a total of 450metric tons of ore was collected from three different locations in the deposit and shipped to Mintek. After sampling, the bulk sample was prepared for smelting. This comprised crushing, screening and calcining with each step done separately for the three different lots. The chemical composition of the ore from the deposit is relatively high in silica and therefore falls out of the MgO to SiO2 range that is normally processed by pyrometallurgical means to produce ferronickel. The main objective of the testwork was to demonstrate that a method could be found and successfully applied to smelt these siliceous ores and produce an acceptable nickel-containing alloy. A 2-m ID DC arc furnace was installed with a twin-cathode (electrode) configuration to replicate the proposed commercial-scale furnace and also incorporated an advanced design of water-cooled copper panels in the lower furnace sidewalls to withstand the aggressive nature of the high SiO2-containing slags. The reductant used was a high-volatile coal from Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The reductant addition was adjusted to achieve a 90% recovery of nickel. In the assessment of the process metallurgy, some deviation from equilibrium conditions was observed. This deviation is ascribed to the intermittent existence of a smelting bath partially covered with feed during the testwork. Optimization of smelting conditions should result in the metallurgy (slag metal equilibrium) being closer to the theoretical predictions and make the production of a 20% nickel alloy possible at 90% nickel recovery. The solution for the successful processing of these siliceous ores was found in the attainment of the necessary operational stability through the control of arc length, operating temperature, open-bath smelting conditions and flux additions of up to 10% dolime for the most siliceous of the three ore types. The test work carried out by Mintek provided the basis for the process flow sheet and engineering design of the DC arc smelting furnaces for the Shevchenko Nickel project.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

The following data are put together to assist those who are responsible for ordering stores for mines and works. When making out a list of mine stores for a new plant, one can hardly be expected to remember everything, still it is all the more important that articles should not be forgotten, should the mine be situated in an out of the way place, where the manager has to look several weeks ahead. A man who has been accustomed to buy stores on a small scale, from local merchants, where he could pick out personally what he wanted, may suddenly find himself in a place where he has to order wholesale quantities or make out store lists to send contractors for quotations. As it is of course cheaper to purchase stores by the hundredweight, coil, barrel, etc as the case may be, in which they are made up, than to break such a parcel, the way in which the materials are placed on the market is mentioned, so that those who don't know may take full advantage of wholesale terms. The most frequent sizes and brands employed in connection with Australian mining are also mentioned. It would be useless to enumerate all sizes made by the trade, as many would be of no value for our purpose; still I have put down what will serve as a reminder to the manager to mention what size he requires when giving an order, such as the diameter of dynamite cartridges a slight neglect of this sort has often caused serious delay. By mentioning certain brands I do not wish to recommend them in preference to others inadvertently omitted they are simply mentioned as some of those frequently met with.

Electrowinning metals from solutions leached from low-grade ores is becoming an increasingly important extraction method as the metal industry turns to pollution-free recovery processes. Lead-alloy anodes are used industrially in the electrolytic recovery of zinc and copper. However, associated with the use of these anodes are the inherent problems of stability and lead contamination of the cathode. In an effort to eliminate these problems, the Bureau of Mines has developed a relatively inexpensive lead dioxide anode for electrowinning metals from strong acid solutions. The anode was prepared by depositing Pb02 directly on a titanium blank in a strong HN03-Pb(N03)2 solution at 2.15 to 6.45 A/dm2 and 60° C. This anode was tested in zinc and copper electrowinning cells containing 200 gpl H2S04 and 35 to 100 gpl metal ions at the current density of 3.23 to 6.45 A/dm2. Contamination of the cathode by lead was =0.005 pet. A 30-day test at 6.45 to 12.90 A/dm2 in an electrolyte containing 200 gpl H2S04 and no metal ions resulted in a slight change in surface morphology of the Pb02 anode but no measurable change in anode weight or dimensions.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents.
