"Pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field have been applied to the bainite transformation of Cr5 steel. Three groups of experiments were conducted. In the first group, ordinary resistance furnace was used for heat treatment. The Cr5 specimens were rapidly heated up to austenitization temperature 940 °C, held for 20 min, air cooled to bainite transformation temperature 350 °C, held for 10, 20, or 40 min and then air cooled to room temperature. The second and the third group shared the same temperature-time curve with that of the first group, but their heat resources came from the Joule heat produced by pulsed current. 1.5 T pulsed magnetic field was exerted on the third group specimens when they were held at 350 °C, but the second group specimens did not undergo the treatment of magnetic field. It was found that both pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field obviously retarded the bainite transformation. The phenomena were discussed in terms ofliterature results.IntroductionApplying pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology are very pronnsmg ways to change the microstructure of materials by affecting the phase transformation process. People had found that pulsed current dramatically influences the behaviors of materials, for example, electromigration effect [l], the solidification of metals and alloys [2, 3], electroplasticity [4, 5], crystallization of amorphous alloys [6], healing of metal materials [7] and so on. As to pulsed magnetic field technology, a lot of effort had been spent on grain refinement in solidification of metals [8, 9], recrystallization of cold-worked metals and alloys [10] and Fe-based alloys solid-state phase transformation [11, 12]. Though application of pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology have proliferated in recent years, investigation on their effects on solid/solid phase transformation, especially bainite transformation, is lacking. "Microstructure of semisolid slurry of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy was investigated with pulse magnetooscillation (PMO) treatment, the results showed that the PMO treatment can refine the crystal structures of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloy significantly. The discharging frequency of PMO had a great effect on the solidified structure transformation of semisolid slurry of Al-4.5wt. %Cu alloy, and the primary a-Al particles become much finer and rounder with an increase of discharging frequency. However, over a certain discharging frequency, the grains of primary a-Al become coarse.IntroductionOver the last decade, a lot of attentions have been paid on metal rheoforming process [1-4], since it has higher mechanical properties of formed components, strength to weight ratio and age hardenablity. Nevertheless, semi-solid forming is always performed at high solid fractions (40%-60%), so it has the limitation of viscosity, a tends to be difficult to pour semisolid slurry into the hole of the shot sleeve. Therefore, a series of novel semi-solid slurry preparation methods and rheoforming techniques have been invented, such as, semisolid vibration treatment [5], rheocasting [6], pulsed magnetic field process [7], annulus electromagnetic stirring [8], via ultrasonic vibration process [9], equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process [l0] and straininduced melt activation (SIMA) process [11].The electromagnetic field is characterized by its effective grain refinement, green, convenient manipulation and without contamination of melt. The mechanisms of dendrite was fragmentation by electromagnetic field have also been largely proposed [12-14]. The broken dendrite arms then undergo a coarsening process to provide the globular structures and obtain much finer and rounder a-Al particles. When compared with other external electromagnetic techniques, Pulse Magneto-Oscillation (PMO) has obtained more fuvors, owing to narrower pulse width and much lower energy consumption. Furthermore, the PMO treatment can reach finer grains with shorter time treatment [16, 17]. This work aims to study the effects of different discharging frequency ofPMO treatment on the microstructure transition of the semisolid slurry of Al-4.5 wt.%Cu alloy."

Chalcocite-bornite concentrates of KGHM contain, similarly to chalcopyrite concentrates, 20-30 wt.% Cu but several times less iron (2-7 wt.%) and sulphur (9-12 wt.%). Another useful characteristic of KGHM concentrates is the presence of organic carbon (5.5-8.5 wt.%) in them, which serves as fuel in the flash smelting process. The main contaminants of the concentrates are lead (1.3-2.5 wt.%) and arsenic (0.05-0.4 wt.%) which require appropriate technological treatment in order to remove them from the copper pro-duct. Chalcocite-bornite concentrates are processed in KGHM by two different processes: ? a flash smelting process (Glogow 2 Smelter) ? a shaft smelting process (Glogow 1 Smelter, Legnica Smelter) The shaft smelting process used in the Glogow 1 Smelter and in the Legnica Smelter has higher production costs than the flash smelting process of HM Glogow 2. Additionally, the shaft smelting process employs several concurrently running installations (six dryers, seven briquetting lines, six shaft furnaces, nine converters), the operation of which, including maintenance, requires significant financial expenditure. Therefore, the Company is currently considering the substitution of the shaft furnace process in the Glogow 1 Smelter and in the Legnica Smelter by the one stage flash smelting process located in the Glogow Smelter, with output equaling the copper production capacity of both smelters, i.e. 320 000 ? 350 000 t/a. There are two technological options being considered which differ from each other in their man-ner of flash slag cleaning. In the first, the slag cleaning would be the same as in the existing Glogow 2 Smelter, i.e. the slag would be cleaned by pyrometallurgical reduction of the oxide copper and other metal compounds in the electric furnace in order to produce waste slag containing below 0.6 wt.% Cu. However, the other option of the flash slag cleaning would be carried out in two stages. After preliminary slag reduction in the electric furnace to 3-5 wt.% Cu, there would be flotation of the partially reduced slag.

"Watermelon peel is selected as a novel adsorbent to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solution. A simple saponification process is proposed to modify the peel and the adsorbent is characterized by SEM and FTIR. The effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration of Pb(ll), biosorbent dosage and temperature on adsorption of Pb(II) are investigated. Different models are used to fit experimental data. These models indicate that the adsorption process follows the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir model is 1.05mol kg-1 for the prepared sorbent. Equilibrium time is attained in 5-10 min for the studied concentrations. The watermelon peel can be used as an effective and low-cost biosorbent for removal of Pb(ll) from aqueous solution.IntroductionRecently, removal of heavy metal ions from industrial effluents by biosorption has become a very attractive topic, since the more serious pollution issues caused by heavy metals emerge frequently, and more strict requirements for its control are called upon by society [1,2]. In this case, most conventional purification technologies are not suitable due to poor cost-effectiveness [3]. For example, chemical precipitation by alkaline reagents usually can not decrease the metal ion concentration below the permissive levels, and also it will produce a large amount of sludge containing toxic metals. Membrane separation techniques can realize deep purification of wastewater easily, although its operating cost is usually high. Thus, considering the high effectiveness, low cost and free-sludge operation, bisorption has become a promising technique in water treatment [4]. The most important thing for this technology is the synthesis of a suitable biosorbent, whose adsorption properties will determine the removal efficiency and economic cost for the whole process. Watermelon is one of the most popular fruits for mankind for its delicious flavor. Usually, the watermelon is consumed mainly for its edible pulp, and its peel is discarded or only used as feed for livestock. Considering the pectin contained in the watermelon peel, just like that in orange wastes in the reported literatures [3], the idea of using it as the raw material to prepare the biosorbents for heavy metal ions removal from the aqueous solution was evaluated in this study."

Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes are currently attracting special attention in materials processing. CVD processes are now used to produce special materials in the form of thin films, coatings, composites, and optical fibers. This process produces material of high purity, in complex shapes, and in a variety of microstructures. It is a capital intensive process, involving use of high cost raw materials. Modeling simulations have the potential of reducing the time for CVD . process design, and the need for experimentation. Modeling would, therefore, appear to be an attractive option for producing a product of acceptable quality. At Ohio University, progress has been made in modeling of CVD processes, specially in the areas of optical fiber preform fabrication, and fiber coating.

This paper covers technical and other developments during the first 20 years of Peirce-Smith converting. There were numerous mechanical and process ideas and concepts already being developed and used by others that had possible application within the converter that Peirce and Smith were moving ahead with. There were also other converter configurations in which the basic lining and larger size concepts could function. Finally, as awards and honors began to accumulate, there were those who felt that contributions of other early workers were being ignored. The working out of these conflicts and differing directions will be described.

Nonferrous metal recycling not only provides energy saving and environmental benefits but also is a significant factor in the supply of various types of metals used in our society. Recycling plays an important role in establishing the sustainability of materials. The total amount of recycled nonferrous metals by weight accounts for less than 5% but their value is larger than 50% compared to ferrous metal recycling which consists of about half of the total metal recycling in weight. This paper describes trends and typical achievements in nonferrous metal recycling and overviews the present and future of nonferrous metal recycling technology and business in Korea.

San Manuel Oxide operations of BHP Copper, located in Southeastern Arizona, operates a leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SXEW) facility that produces high quality cathode copper from low-grade oxide ores. Permanent heap leaching and in-situ leaching methods accomplish the dissolution of copper from the oxide ores. Open pit mining and heap leach construction took place from 1985 to 1995. Run-of-mine oxide ore from the pit was hauled to the heap dumps and leached by the soaking cure and continuous irrigation method. Solution application to the heaps still continues and acid soluble copper recovery has reached 86%. This paper presents and discusses the current operating practices and innovations applied to the leach facilities to maximize copper recovery from the heap leached residue. Factors such as irrigation methods, solution chemistry, sideslope treatment, post curing, lixiviant acid strength, and "rice paddies" irrigation, will be discussed. Heap leach solution control and sampling methodologies will be also presented.

Nowadays the most important Direct Reduction - DR processes in shaft furnaces has to deal with carbon fines precipitation and DRI carburization issues. Based in a cooperative research program joining Catholic University (PUC-Rio) and SAMARCO Mining Co, a project dealing with pellets reduction and those two phenomena was established. This work analyzes kinetically the three reactions mentioned before, considering typical values for the operational variables temperature, flowrate, pressure and gas composition, parameters commonly used to control the DRI formation in the Reduction Zone - RZ of the shaft furnaces. From laboratories experimental results, the kinetic equations for those reactions were established and, using the superposition principle, generated a specific global kinetic model for the iron oxide reduction and the soot formation. Finally, using those experimental results and applying a planned statistical factorial analysis for the experiments, the numerical coefficients for each equation were calculated and the correlation factor determined for the proposed global kinetic equation.

"It has been a major challenge to reduce the intermixed grade formation during ladle change-over operation in continuous casting process of tundish steelmaking. The F-curve generated by step input of the tracer (new grade steel) tells about the intermixed grade amount for different grade specifications. Use of flow modifiers is beneficial in reducing the intermixed grade because of the change in slope (in different time zones) and position of the F-curve due to their placement at tundish bottom. Present study aims at investigating the role of dam placed before the outlet in a multi-strand tundish with reference to the slope behavior of F-curve in different time zones during the teeming operation plays an important role in determining the intermixed amount.Introduction In Continuous casting process, the old grade steel remaining in the tundish (reservoir between ladle and mould) from the old ladle gets mixed with new grade steel from new ladle and leads to intermixed grade which is considered to be of inferior quality. Although formation of intermixed grade is inevitable with the sequential method of casting, its amount can be controlled by changing the flow behavior of steel inside the steel. Intermixing in a slab caster tundish was simulated using 3-D numerical model based on k-å turbulence equation and compared their result with that of water model experiment Yeh and Hwang [1]. Huang and Thomas [2] reported that quantity of residual fluid in tundish affects the composition distribution in the transitional slab and thus the intermixed length. Huang and Thomas [3] developed three sub models to predict mixing in tundish, liquid core of strand and solidification. Thomas [4] developed a one dimensional model to simulate the final composition distributions in slab caster of continuous casting and investigated the effect of process variables on the intermixing. Alizadeh mehdi et al., [5] simulated of the intermixing phenomenon for slab casting for three different sub models. Goldschmidt et al. [6] developed a numerical model that predicted the location of the intermixed steel in a four line round caster. Lan and Khodadadi [7] studied for the transient fluid flow of liquid steel, heat transfer and solidification during the flying tundish change process. Cho and Kim [8] developed a mixing model to predict the outlet concentration of the tundish during grade transition. Most of the work reported in the literature has dealt with intermixing in slab caster tundish. Billet caster units are more often being used by steel industries due to growing demand of billets. The multiple outlets lead to varying degree of intermixing with time owing to their different distance (location) from the inlet. Use of flow modifier to minimize the intermixed amount, however has also not been discussed in detail so far. Further no work has been reported regarding effect of slope of F-curves obtained through different outlets on intermixing. Hence keeping these objectives in mind attempt has been made by authors to analyze the slope of Fcurves after dividing them into three different time zones and the effect of these time zones on intermixing."

Semi coke, a byproduct in the chemical industry, is a new fuel for blast furnace injection in China. In this study, semi coke and bitumite were milled into different size, ranged from 0.147mm to under 0.074mm. The content of volatile matter and ash, which affect the combustibility of semi coke, were measured using muffle furnace. The mixture, in which the proportion of coal in different sizes changed, was blend by semi coke and bitumite with different size. Activation energy calculation and the comprehensive combustion characteristic index of all kinds of blends was also discussed. The result obtained by Thermogravimetry –Derivative Thermogravimetry curves indicates that the smaller the size of mixture is, the lower for the characteristic temperature, and the better for its combustibility, Semi coke can be a substitute for anthracite in blast furnace injection.

A dominant characteristic of many derivatives of the lanthanides is stability at high- temperatures. Combine this with novel solid-state behavior under those conditions and there is the potential for new materials that can not only improve existing applications but also help create new technologies. These property themes will be traced through new uses ranging from efficient energy generation and raw material conversion to control of environmental emissions and temperature measurement. Conducting ceramics, methane conversion catalysts, sulfur oxide capture agents and phosphor hosts will be described. Some categories will account in the future for significant lanthanide consumption whereas others will remain commercially negligible but technologically vital. All uses will illustrate the versatility of those elements inappropriately termed rare.

Microstructural analysis to support the development of material models provides valuable information to design complex forming operations. Damage models such as e.g. by Gurson consider spherical voids only. However, investigations of bcc steels by scanning electron microscopy reveal that voids exhibit an ellipsoidal shape with progressing deformation. The material’s weakening in the Gurson model is taken into account by the void volume fraction. Therefore, a three-dimensional characterization of the void shape offers important data for modelling. Thus, information on the anisotropy of the process of void evolution and accordingly, about the anisotropy of the deformation process is provided. Application of the information regarding the void shape anisotropy within the Gurson model is discussed.

"The changes in process conditions that frequently decrease the service life of refractory products provided incentive for RHI AG to develop high performance bricks, especially for non-ferrous metal applications. Innovative product development was required to determine suitable refractory products for improving lining life. At the Technology Center in Leoben, Austria, practical corrosion testing methods and facilities, including an induction furnace and rotary kiln, enable detailed comparative analysis of brick wear on a pilot scale. In tests that were carried out using a fayalite type slag, the newly developed RADEX VFG magnesia-chromite grade showed very promising results compared to the standard grades. Based on the test results, optimal refractory solutions can be recommended for this challenging industrial application and field trials can be performed directly at the customer's site.IntroductionThe complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metal industry, and especially changes to the process conditions in combination with the diversity of metal processing furnaces ''', requires a precise understanding of each individual system for appropriate refractory product selection l2'. In addition, particular importance is focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible.Another important aspect results from the global shortage of resources, which forces companies to invest in recycling processes. In the base metal industry, recycling operations have resulted in significant changes; for example, operating with two slag chemistries and process temperatures will influence the performance of previously suitable linings. The raw material mix for primary smelters has also changed, including higher levels of secondary raw materials in the smelter feed."

Traditional patterns of lead and zinc utilization are being evaluated in accordance with new paradigms that seek to ensure the long-term compatibility of global industrial activity with precepts of sustainable development and sustainable consumption. As a consequence, both industry sectors are experiencing intense scrutiny from the international community, and numerous regulatory options are being considered that may impact upon international industry practice. This paper reviews the growing expectations being placed upon industry, and highlights some of the common regulatory concerns being expressed regarding both metals despite their differing toxicological profiles.

"Hydrometal provides an adequate technology to reintroduce otherwise lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy, while keeping the environment cleaner. Two case studies at an integrated hydrometallurgical recycling facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: (I) Residual low quality acid and caustic are used in the processing of zinc industry cements to produce copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc concentrates by several consecutive selective leach - precipitation processes.(II) Copper anode slimes are treated and their precious metal contents are recovered. Depending on the composition of the slimes, separate or combined concentrates of copper, bismuth, tellurium/selenium and silver/precious metals can be produced."

This symposium is dedicated to the lifetime achievements of Professor H.Y. Sohn. It covers the scientific fields, processing routes and investigation techniques in which Prof. Sohn has worked during his career and is based in the equally important three topical areas: Principles, Technologies, and Industrial practice. Professor Sohn was General Chair of the very first TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Symposium in 1983 in San Francisco which led to the Annual such symposia as this International symposium. Furthermore, the theme of that symposium was sulfide smelting, which is also included in this symposium. [ ] Professor Sohn was born in a beautiful dynastic capital Kaesung, Korea on August 21, 1941. He received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Seoul National University, M.Sc. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and his Ph.D. degree in 1970 from theUniversity of California at Berkeley all in Chemical Engineering. After working as a Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as a Research Engineer at Du Pont?s Engineering Technology Laboratory, Dr. Sohn joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1974 and currently holds the ranks of Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Mono-disperse ZnS and CdS nano-particles were prepared by the homogenous precipitation method and the effects of SO42-,NO3- and Cl-ions on crystalline of particles were investigated experimentally. The results showed that these anions had no influence on the crystalline of ZnS, but different crystalline CdS ultrafine particles were produced in different anion systems, where the blend-type CdS was obtained from natrate or sulphate solution, and wurtzite-type CdS from chloride solution. It was ascribed to the coordination of Cl- and Cd2+ that altered the supersaturation of precipitate ions in the solution, the existing growth units and their connecting patterns, thereby producing wurtzite-type CdS with a more stable structure.

"A commercial lead smelter using Outotec Ausmelt TSL Technology has been successfully commissioned and put into operation at Yunnan Tin Company Ltd operations near Gejiu City, in Yunnan Province, China. The plant was commissioned in July 2010 after three years in the design and construction phase. The process uses a three stage batch process to produce lead bullion and zinc fume, and a slag that is low in metal values. The paper provides details of this lead smelting project, including the theoretical evaluation of the multi-stage process chemistry, engineering design, plant commissioning and the final operation. Comparison of the design targets and actual performance of the plant is emphasized. The fast ramp-up to full production of the largest Ausmelt TSL lead furnace built to date is highlighted.IntroductionIn 2002, Ausmelt and Yunnan Tin Company (YTC) successfully commissioned a smelter to modernise the Yunnan Tin smelter in Gejiu City, Yunnan Province, China. A single Ausmelt furnace was installed by YTC to process tin concentrate and revert materials, to produce YT Brand tin product. The advanced Ausmelt Technology furnace at YTC replaced seven existing reverberatory furnaces and provided a flexible, energy efficient and environmentally beneficial system to complement the world leading refinery facilities of YTC."
