The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

In July 1997, Kvaerner Environmental signed a unique contract with Echo Bay Alaska called the Transfer Risk and Accelerate Closure (TRAC). The contract called for Kvaerner to assume the responsibilities and obligations associated with closeout of the Alaska-Juneau (A-J) Mine. Kvaerner is an international engineering and construction company with global interdisciplinary experience in the mining industry and environmental remediation. Echo Bay’s requirements called for Kvaerner to: •Provide a fixed price for closure with no change orders. •Negotiate, prepare and implement a final closeout plan as outlined by Echo Bay. •Complete a closure program that exceeded current regulatory requirements. •Improve, expand and maintain a proactive public and community relations program. •Hire Echo Bay employees where possible. •Provide adequate performance guarantees and judicial relief of environmental claims.

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

Baja Mining is currently constructing the Boleo metallurgical plant in Santa Rosalia, Mexico to recover copper, cobalt, zinc and possibly manganese products from the Boleo ore. The process involves an acid seawater leach of the whole ore followed by solid-liquid separation and washing of the leach residue. Solvent extraction is used to separate copper, cobalt and zinc from solution. Copper and cobalt are recovered as cathode metal products and zinc as a zinc sulphate monohydrate. Manganese may be directly precipitated as manganese carbonate which can be used as a feedstock for manganese metal production. Laboratory testing has continued to refine various aspects of the process including iron removal, cobalt and zinc solvent extraction, cadmium cementation, cobalt electrowinning and manganese metal electrowinning. The results of this testing are reported in this paper.

West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

Toronto as a geographical area provides an exceptionally wide variety of subsoil stratiphication. Tunneling consequently required a very wide range of adaptabilities to meet its changing conditions. This discussion will provide a summary of work performed in both earth and rock formation using three of our recent works to describe a Contractor's experience. The general subsoil stratigraphy is known to consist of deposits laid down during the Illionian Glaciation followed by the Samgamon Interglacial Stage and finally the Wisconsin Glaciation. All these deposits are underlain by shale bedrock of the Dundas formation. As a whole the Dundas formation is predominantly a greyish blue, thinly bedded shale. The engineering characteristics of the shale vary considerably, however, between a blue clay (argillaceous) shale and a much lighter (in colour) silty and sometimes sandy (arenaceous) shale, and occasional limestone layers. The Illionian deposits are usually found to be layers of pebbly clay till and an overlaying layer of contorted varved-clay. These glacial deposits can be overlain by a thick layer of sandy silt to silty sand which is identified as the Samgamon Interglacial sediments. Because of the action of erosion the Wisconsin till sheets, many times separated by interstadial sands, can vary greatly in their number of layers from zero to three or more.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

This paper presents analysis of damages and rehabilitation design for three major French rail-way tunnels built in mid-19th century. The La Nerthe tunnel underwent ovalization deformation with excessive displacement at the springline, and pinching and bursting of the liner bricks at the crown due to tectonic residual stresses with very high lateral earth pressure. The Saint-Louis les Aygalades tunnel invert was subjected to undulatory deformation resulting in tracks misalignment, which was caused by non-homogeneity of mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ground. The Roches de Condrieu tunnel required widening to comply with the increase in dynamic envelope of trains due to their larger cross section and higher speed. The applied rehabilitation methods and constraints of work in these busy mainline railway tunnels have been discussed in detail.

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been recognized by the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) as the most common job-related disease in the United States. Roughly 30 million workers are exposed to excessive noise levels or toxins that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR)is investigating noise controls to reduce operator overexposures caused by haul trucks used in underground metal/non-metal mines. To identify the most significant contributors to the overall sound level, Source Path Contribution (SPC) analysis was conducted. Noise dosimetry and time-motion analysis were also conducted to quantify operator noise exposure. SPC analysis determined that, under high idle conditions, a source near a hydraulic pump mounted to the rear of the engine and the engine cooling fan were the major noise sources. The time-motion/dosimetry analysis showed that the operators accumulated more than 90% of their noise exposures while they were hauling ore to the dump site and traveling back to the load site unloaded.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains ?1 ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other - major contaminants meet National Drinking Water Standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85% of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79% of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low- cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

The Stress Control Method of mine design provides enhanced engineering control over the behavior of underground structures in comparison to conventional mine design methods. The same Method can be applied to achieve design control of surface subsidence. The basic mechanism relating undergroued deformation and surface subsidence is disclosed by mine simulations, using the REM (Rheological Element Method) computer code, whose predictions have been validated by field measurements. The key components of the underlying mechanism of surface subsidence have been shown to be the stress envelopes formed in the process of underground excavation. It has also been demonstrated that significant control of surface subsidence can be achieved by designing the geometry and timing of underground excavation to regulate the formation of stress envelopes. A field example is given in this paper to illustrate this application of the Stress Control Method.

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

The protection of miners, equipment, and infrastructure is discussed. While the primary focus of the described technology is to prevent miners from being injured, struck-by, or crushed by heavy equipment; another major benefit realized is also the protection of equipment and infrastructure. An attempt is made to define and classify the systems used to provide proximity detection and warnings as well as collision detection and avoidance. Information about the speed of vehicles and human operator response time can be a factor in the choice of what type of system and what features are needed to properly address the needs. How the technology adjusts to compensate for various vehicle speeds, while maintaining the same level of protection is noted. The statistics which justify the need of miner protection are provided. The primary system components required, what attributes they feature, and how they respond in the environment, is briefly highlighted. The physics behind the danger zone marker technology and what makes it so robust and reliable is established. Examples of a few mining applications and specific operational modes are provided for both surface and underground.

Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company's own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake's completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region's lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.
