Increasing mechanization of underground mining operations throughout the years has reduced the dependency on large, concentrated working forces. Fewer workers in scattered locations, coupled with the versatility of diesel equipment to load and haul personnel, supplies, and mineral ore, has made diesel equipment attractive in mine feasibility and design studies. The use of the mobile equipment along with higher production or "bulk" mining methods provides for more efficient mineral extraction systems. These systems are expected to become more widespread until long-term research provides a further evolution to more complete automation of underground mining. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has been conducting research to reduce the health and safety hazards posed by increasing use of diesel equipment and the higher power ratings being proposed. The goal is to provide for safe and efficient use of the equipment. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has recommended that diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen adding importance to the Bureau's research program. The paper describes advances in engine design, the use of diesels in mining operations, and significant health and safety research accomplishments of the Bureau of Mines. These accomplishments will help assure that diesel equipment remains an option for determining the most efficient system to mine an ore body.

A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

The recovery of P2O5 from a 90-95% minus 45 microns phosphate slimes sample was carried out in a 5.08-cm internal diameter and 549-cm high flotation column cell. The influence of the feed rate, feed percent (%) solids, and frother dosage on the recovery was investigated following a truncated cubic 3 level by 3 variables experimental design. Two three-variable interactions of feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (+l)/frother dosage (-1) and feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (-1)/ frother dosage (+I) gave the region of optimum column performance: recovery (52.60-74.50%), mass yield (15.68-18.80%), and concentrate grade (22.87-31.2196). The collector dosage also showed a significant influence on the column performance. The high reagent consumption relative to the current plant levels points to the need for the removal of ultrafine particles (<10 µm).

The results of the electrokinetic study of the activation of quartz by divalent cations showed that the charge reversal was related to the point at which the cation hydrolyzed. The reversal was not due to the presence of solid hydroxide at the surface of the quartz but due to the charged ions in the solutions. The charge reversal for beryllium at a log molar concentration of 1x10-4 was observed at pH 5 and 9. The quartz was positively charged between a pH reading of 5 to 10. Magnesium at the same log molar concentration did not show a charge reversal from pH 2 to 12. The probable cause of the charge reversal was due to the ionized Be3 (OH)3+3 or Mg (OH)+ . Variations in the electrokinetics of quartz were minimized by heating the sample to 300° C.

The City of Toronto is currently undertaking the design of the Black Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer Relief Project. The Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel through shale rock of the Georgian Bay Formation and soft ground soil consisting of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits. The 20 kilometer alignment has been split into four sections of tunnel (1) the 12.9 km, 3.0 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer, (2) the 2.9 km, 1.5 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer Microtunnel, (3) the 3.9 km, 1.8 meter diameter Jane Relief Sewer, and (4) the 0.5 km,1.5 meter diameter Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel. Additionally, one 40,000 m3 wet weather flow (WWF) storage tank and numerous WWF connection shafts are to be constructed and connected to the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer to pick up WWF from existing outfalls currently discharging to Black Creek. The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $600 million with construction of the Project’s Phase One Works, the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer and Jane Relief Sewer, scheduled to commence in 2025. This paper provides an overview of the project in terms of the anticipated geotechnical conditions, the scheme developed for design and construction of the tunnel system and the associated schedule and procurement strategy. The consideration for planning of the tunnel system, the risk-based analysis and decision-making process are presented and form the basis for selection of a precast tunnel lining support method in the rock and soft ground.

The open stope room and pillar method of mining is used throughout Ozark Lead Company&apos;s underground mine located at Sweetwater, Missouri. This method of mining produces an approximate overall ore extraction of 80%. Pillar recovery, on a limited and experimental basis, was started in January of 1979 to determine the maximum size underground opening that could be mined safely. Monitoring the roof and surrounding pillars for potential failure during this pillar recovery process was accomplished by utilizing a simple rod extensometer to measure roof sag. Boreholes 7.5cm in diameter were drilled 3.5m into the roof to spot any separations or cracks that might have propagated between the bedded layers of rock. Underground openings 85m in length by 46m in width have been mined successfully without roof or surrounding pillar failure. Continued measurements to establish long term results will be necessary.

Factorial design of column flotation experiments was used to understand the main and interactional effects of the column parameters. In the experiments, the air flog rate, the wash-water, flow rate and the froth depth were varied at two levels. Analysis of the results showed that an increase in airflow rate had a deleterious effect on the grade of the concentrate, whereas, an increase in froth height increased the grade. The interactions between airflow and wash water and between airflow and froth height were significant with respect to grade of the concentrate. These results demonstrated that, from an ore containing 12.76% P2O5, it is possible in a single-stage flotation column to obtain a concentrate containing 31 % P2O5 (10.6% Si02) with a recovery of 94%, thus reducing the number of cleaning stages that would be required if conventional flotation cells were used.

Like Jerry, he&apos;s very shy and retiring, and doesn&apos;t have any strong opinions about maintenance. INTRODUCTION CRAIG AMMAR: The ultimate goal behind implementing a proactive equipment management process is to provide capacity assurance and ultimately increase an organization&apos;s ability to generate revenue while reducing operating costs. Targeting such lofty objectives has brought many an organization to its knees, utilizing new maintenance techniques, concepts, and technology aimed at making our lives better and more organized. The root cause of such frustration generally stems from a lack of understanding or support for the fundamentals of implementing a proactive equipment management process. There are just two types of maintenance programs, reactive and proactive. It&apos;s an established fact that you need a little of both to run an effective equipment management process, obviously more of one (proactive) than the other. Here are some telltale signs that your equipment management process is in trouble: -Maintenance is performed as a knee jerk reaction when equipment fails. -Repeated and frequent equipment failures occur, with no focus on eliminating the root cause. -Sketchy, inconsistent, unclear preventive maintenance is performed or there is no support for the preventive maintenance process. -No predictive maintenance technology process is in place, or little support for predictive maintenance exists. -Less than 50 percent of your work is generated by the maintenance group resulting from inspections.

She was young, beautiful, intelligent, virgin. Her name was Barbara and she captured the attention of many men, especially those in dangerous occupations. Her rich and doting father was hopeful of making an advantageous marriage for his daughter. Instead, she defied him, became a Christian, and refused to marry. Traumatized, he killed her and was himself struck dead by lightning. That is not the plot of a new soap opera. It is the melodramatic story of a Turkish teenager who was martyred in the third century but lives still as patron saint of mining. The story begins with a 20th century fact. Santa Barbara is a figment of imagination - perhaps based on an early oriental folk heroine, embroidered by a seventh century storyteller, and reworked by a ninth century Greek martyrologist. The authoritative Lives of the Saints reports: "There is ... Considerable doubt about the existence of a virgin martyr called Barbara and it is quite certain that her legend is spurious. There is no mention of her in the earlier martyrologies, her legend is not older than the seventh century, and her cult did not spread until the ninth." The Catholic Dictionary adds that the Barbara story is probably "a pious legend." Widely revered Santa Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints of the Middle Ages. She became the patron, not only to miners, but also to artillerymen, engineers, architects, builders, stonemasons, gravediggers, and sailors. Mines, mountains, churches, and places bear her name. Barbara&apos;s feast day, Dec. 4, appears on the most ancient holy day calendars. And a Barbara festival is still celebrated throughout central Europe, in Spain, and in mining areas of Latin America on that date. The Pacific coast channel, the city, and the mission of California are named for Santa Barbara. An expedition, sailing that coast under Viscaino in 1602, was saved from shipwreck on Dec. 4 after the sailors prayed for Barbara&apos;s intervention. Franciscans gave her name to the modern Franciscan Province of Santa Barbara, which embraces six western states and the Philippine Islands. Barbara is intimately entwined with mining. This paper presents some techniques and data required to design large ball mills. The advent of larger size mills leads to consideration of the gearless drive as a practical solution to utilize large horsepowwers. The particular shell structure under consideration is subjected to thermal as well as magnetic loads. The magnitude of the inertia, magnetic and shell temperature characteristics have a very significant effect on the design and performance of the hydrodynamic pivoted shoe bearing. Particularly since these bearings have lower frictional resistance properties than hydrostatic trunnion tee rings. The structure of the mill is designed for long life. Parameters involved with the fatigue life of the structure are discussed together with some of the more important aspects of the design.

Populations of Bacillus cereus spores are elevated in soils over four subsurface gold deposits in the western United States. Large deposit-to-background ratios of B. cereus populations were obtained in soil traverses over the Minnesota vein deposit, Empire District, Colorado (maximum 50:1); the Shasta (maximum 3,500:1), and Evening Star maximum 18,000:1) vein deposits, Shasta County, California; and the Hog Ranch disseminated gold deposit (maximum 40,000:1) in Washoe County, Nevada. Small increases in the concentration of toxic metals in the soil may be responsible for the elevated spore populations. The observed elevation of B. cereus spore populations near these gold deposits indicates that the method should be further investigated as a potential exploration tool.

Slurry viscosity ultimately affects the majority of mineral extraction processes. However, to date its role has been disguised because mineral processing equipment has been conservatively designed to operate at minimal slurry viscosity. With most ores this still meant acceptable solids concentration was achieved. However, with the advent of treatment of weathered ores the resulting higher slurry viscosity (rheology) has meant solids concentration has had to be reduced, often to unacceptable levels. To permit operation at higher solids concentration chemical dispersants are employed. These dispersants are expensive and their addition should be controlled. Slurry Systems Pty Limited (SSPL) has developed an On-Line Viscometer to monitor and control slurry viscosity, whether by controlling water addition or by controlling dispersant addition. Using this instrument the slurry rheology can be controlled at the optimum level, maximizing solids throughput, and minimizing water, reagent, and dispersant addition. This paper discusses rheology of typical mineral slurries, the relationship between slurry rheology and percent solids in a slurry, and the need for rheological control in mineral processing. The effects of rheology on various process steps, and the use of dispersants are reviewed. The paper concludes with summarizing actual case histories and cost impact of Theological control.

The feasibility of maintaining equipment location, personnel location and vital statistics in surface and underground mining operations has increased with advances in radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The paper addresses the use of this technology, relatively new in the mining industry, to track surface equipment in mine pits, loading points, and processing facilities. Specific applications are discussed including a simplified and a complex truck tracking system and an automatic pit ticket system. The paper concludes with a discussion of the future possibilities of RFID technology in mining, such as monitoring biofeedback of personnel (heart and respiration rate, body temperature, exertion level, etc.) repetitious movements to study work habits, and logging air quality via personnel sensors.

A critical demand exists to develop new mineral resources, and the need for exploration techniques to supplement costly test drilling is becoming; more acute. In the past few years more industries have begun experimenting with geophysical methods to locate and define mineral deposits and delineate reserves. The new techniques have proven profitable in many instances. As a part of a broad long range program to study the mineral resources of Alabama, and in response to requests from land owners and mining companies, the Geological Survey of Alabama is investi¬gating the occurrence of bauxite and kaolin deposits in the Eufeula area. This project is supported by special funds appropriated for this purpose by the Alabama Legislature.

The long-term mine scheduling is the optimal decision on how to extract and process the mining reserves. The resulting plan is mainly driven by economic, metallurgical, and geological factors. Accounting for their uncertainties leads to a robust solution and the feasibility for economic-risk quantification. In this work, we model the spatial uncertainty of grade distributions of multiple correlated elements, by using a multivariate morphing transformation. The result is a set of multivariate geostatistical realizations of the grades, which honor the conditioning data, the direct and cross variograms, and the multivariate statistical distribution, inferred from a set of samples. These models are the input in a reinforcement learning framework, adopted to train a deep neural network that considers the grade uncertainty and leads to an optimum mine plan after training using deep Q-Learning. Mining and processing capacities, as well as economic parameters and metallurgical constraints, are incorporated as the reinforcement learning environment rules. The method is validated on a real deposit, providing insights for future applications.

This paper exposes the reasons that led the Empresa Nacional Minera del Sahara, S.A. (ENMINSA) to the selection of a conveyor belt system for the transport of phosphate rock over a distance of 100 kilometers. ENMINSA was created in 1962, with the main objetive of the exploitation of phosphate rock deposits in the Spanish province of Sahara, in North West Africa. Poor grade outcrops were known previously. A detailed geological research carried over the province led ENMINSA to the discovery of deposits not exposed, and of much higher grade. The sector known as Bu-Craa was chosen as the most promising, and was explored by means of drill holing and shafting. The important amount of information obtained permitted a detailed evaluation of the capacity and grade of the rich ore contained in the Bu-Craa area. Simultaneously with the systematic reconnaissance of the Bu-Craa deposits, ENMINSA developped the study of the technical and economical problems required for the beneficiation of the rock, which comprised five main groups of projects: rock exploitation; beneficiation plant; rock transport from the mine site to the Atlantic coast; storage, handling and loading facilities by the sea- side, and power plant. Once determined the location of the marine loading facilities, which to date are in an advanced stage of construction (figs. 1 and 2), the studies conductive to the selection of the best transport system from the mine to the ocean, along 100 kms. distance were undertaken.

Humid tropical environments pose many problems for mineral exploration. The problems result from thick lateritic soils, dense vegetation, seasonally heavy rains, deep chemical weathering, few outcrops and thick saprolites. Although geochemical exploration should be potentially a useful technique in these environments, it appears from the scarcity of reports in the literature that insufficient attention has been paid to developing procedures that are specific to the needs of humid tropical areas. For this reason, the authors believe that this account of a geochemical study in a tropical coastal area on the edge of the Brazilian shield is of general interest and importance for potential geochemical exploration surveys in similar areas within the tropics. The objective of the geochemical study was to develop a practical technique of reconnaissance geochemical prospecting for copper deposits in Brazilian tropical coastal lowland areas. In order to achieve this objective, information concerning the secondary dispersion of copper in these areas was required. Consequently, an orientation survey was designed to provide this information. The present account contains details of the geochemical study and the information about the secondary dispersion of copper that was acquired during the course of the orientation survey. Location and Climate The field area is on the Atlantic coastal lowland of Brazil at latitude 13°S. It lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Maragojipe, a city of 15,000 inhabitants; this city is on the western side of the Bay de Todos os Santos about 45 airline kilo¬meters northwest of Salvador. (See Fig. 1) A good gravel road from Sao Felipe to Sao Roque do Paraguay crosses the southern part of the field area. The climate of the area is hot and moist, and is without prolonged dry periods. At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

Problems of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) methods and expert systems (ES) to control complex industrial projects have lately become significant in practical terms. Mining ventilation systems undoubtedly belong to complex multi dimensional objects of control with stochastic nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Formal models based on automated ventilation control, do require awkward algorithmic solutions, moreover, a number of tasks become the operator&apos;s headache, and the quality of their solution depends on his experience and intuition. These tasks include: - identifying pre-accidental situations and determining their causes; - making well-grounded decisions with regard to changing ventilation regimes, forecast of mining operations taken account of; - controlling ventilation systems in emergency situations, e.g. when in accident, etc. It is in this context that we have for a number of years been investigating how to practically use AI methods for operative control in dynamic aero-and-gas mining processes, one of our research directions being devoted to working out a consulting programme for the ventilation system operator. Our researching and modeling problem was identification of aero-and-gas situation in different parts of ventilation network and its interpretation in order to determine possible causes for gas regime changing and unexpected consequences. We would single out the following stages in this task: I. Operative information procession coming to the data base from the sensors and analysis of hypothetical versions (using the associative rules base) with regard to factors which have caused significant parameter fluctuations (e.g. C%(t), H(t), Q(t) etc.)., 2. Selection of hypotheses in the knowledge base and forming conclusions in accordance with reliability scale. 3. Clarifying the obtained conclusions in dialogue with the operator. 4. Correcting the associative rules base.
