Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world class, polymetallic deposit that started production in 2010 and is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, are widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground-control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using a total station, which is time consuming and inaccurate, especially on small-scale models.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. Los tipos, tamaños y número de trituradores empleados en un sistema completo de reducción varían con factores tales como: el volumen de mineral que debe ser procesado, tamaño de la mina, tamaño máximo del todo-uno, dureza del mineral y de su roca soporte y tamano requerido para el producto final. Básicamente, sólo existen tres tipos distintos de equipos de trituración para la etapa primaria. Estos son: machacadoras de mandíbulas, trituradores giratorios y molinos de impactos, y cada uno tiene unas características operativas propias. Las trituradoras de mandíbulas operan por aplastamiento de las rocas entre dos paredes, una fija y otra móvil, en una cavidad determinada. Han sido ensayadas variaciones en la caída y movimiento, pero la mayoría de las máquinas del tipo Blake tienen un ángulo de trituración de aproximadamente 27° entre las mandíbulas fijas y móviles. In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

On May 15 and 16, 1999, a mine ventilation survey was performed in the 705-m- (2,312-ft-) deep Cayuga Mine, Cargill Salt Division, Lansing, NY. The purpose of the survey was to develop a numerical model of the existing ventilation system and to perform a computer simulation study for long-term environmental and ventilation planning. Because the natural ventilation pressure (NVP) has significant effects on the ventilation system at the Cayuga Mine, there was a need to assess the NVP acting in the mine. Due to the ventilation arrangements in the Cayuga Mine, the authors decided to use the direct-measuring method to determine the NVP by measuring differential pressure across the automatic fan door. This difference in pressure was measured immediately after the fan was stopped and the automatic door was closed to stop the flow throughout the entire mine. To show seasonal changes in NVP, two additional measurement for NVP were performed, one on Aug. 22, 1999, during the hot (summer) season, and another on Feb. 6, 2000, during the cold (winter) season. The mutual interaction between the natural ventilation pressure and the main fan at the Cayuga Mine is also discussed

Begun in 1992, an abandoned and inactive mine inventory in the Black Hills National Forest has resulted in a hazard ranking of the most severely affected sites. For purposes of the inventory, the Black Hills were divided into three main regions: the northern Black Hills, with primarily gold mines; the central Black Hills, with pegmatite mines and some gold mines; and the southern Black Hills, with primarily uranium mines. A computerized data base has been developed along with standard forms for field crews. The forms were designed to provide maximum compatibility with other abandoned mine inventories on various federal and state lands. Measures recommended for the most hazardous and heavily affected sites include regrading of unstable slopes, fencing of open shafts, and remediation of the most severe acidic mine drainage problems. Specific examples are illustrated where remediation and safety measures were recommended or have been implemented. The vast majority of the sites, however, needed little or no remedial action.

The successful management of large dispersed mineral operations is dependent upon accurate and timely decision making. The plant locations providing the data to support the decision making process are generally separated by distances which elongate the time required to accumulate the data at a central focus. The need exists to examine operational data in context with total mining operations, and in relation to target projections and historical trends. The use of microcomputers for local information tasks is an established capability. Grouping microcomputers into local-area networks is rapidly becoming established. Interconnecting multiple local-area networks to provide a free flowing stream of information between all operational locations of a mining enterprise is possible with use of some emerging technologies. The benefit of the potential interconnections and rapid transfer of information can readily be seen from a production reporting perspective. Numerous other advantages exist' by providing routing to enable a workgroup to be established between separated work functions.

The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

Volatility is a fact of life in the mining industry. Prices of and demand for mineral products are among the most volatile of those for any product. The volatility of these markets wreaks havoc on both corporate management and the personal lives of mining people. Yet, until recently, it has been difficult to assess the impact of volatility on business strategy. This paper discusses how mining firms can profit from market volatility through an operations strategy that stresses operating flexibility. The foundation for our strategy analysis is the observation that a mine is analogous to a stock option. Techniques based on those developed to value stock options have recently been extended to the field of mine valuation. The insights provided by option pricing are very valuable in the development of mine operating strategy.

"As human beings, we have managed risk since the dawn of the ages and have been adept at doing so. In order to survive, we hunted or gathered. If we did not take enough risk, we died. If we took much risk, we died (Fig. 1). As individuals and tribes, risk had to be optimized to maximize our chances to thrive, as individuals and as tribes.In today’s world, the risks are vastly different, but in order to thrive, these must be managed. And no industry knows this as much as mining. In fact, the International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) has proposed the Critical Risk Model (Fig. 2) as a means of identifying critical risk, critical controls and associated performance standards. The ICMM focuses on sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. It has 23 members, representing some of the largest mining companies in the world.This approach is going to help the mining industry. But it must be applied effectively, with the acknowledgment that the system alone cannot be effective. We can say this confidently, as even companies known for the strength of their risk and safety management systems continue to experience significant incidents, and, in some cases, catastrophes. Why does that happen when all safety metrics, including injury rate, are pointing in the right direction? In the view of the author, it is only when leadership, culture and systems work in complete harmony that the resilience of an organization to manage its significant risk is at an optimal level. It remains an ongoing leadership challenge to maintain that balance and the optimal mindset in the organization. So how do you maintain that special balance?Let’s start with a basic premise. Leadership, supported by simple effective systems, creates culture which creates outcomes. Everyone going home safely is an outcome, as is cost effective operations, and to achieve those outcomes efficiently, the organization must focus on the inputs. And those inputs include effective leadership, effective systems (for the purposes of this article, risk and health, safety and environment (HSE) systems), good planning, stable operations and competent workers. This article will focus on gaining maximum performance from your risk management system."

Two automated fire detection system configurations have been used successfully in underground mines: the pneumatic "tube bundle" approach and the electronic telemetry approach. The electronic telemetry approach is more widely used, owing to its greater speed, flexibility, and capacity to both monitor other underground conditions, and remotely control underground equipment. However, depending on specific mine conditions and layouts, pneumatic detection, or a combined pneumatic/telemetered system may offer significant advantages over the telemetered approach alone. This paper describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in- mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system tailored to the unique requirements of multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. A Bureau developed proto- type system is described with emphasis on design features which counter commonly perceived and/or experienced pneumatic detection system operating problems. Finally, the results of a 3-yr in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype hardware are discussed. Included are descriptions of system layout and coverage, response time, tube leakage, sample dilution, elimination of accumulated water from sample lines, and system maintenance and reliability.

A slope stability study for the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines was undertaken to provide Wharf Resources, Inc. with a technical assessment of the stability of the slope for an overall pit slope angle of 60°. A rock analysis of the most critical and persistent combination of discontinuities was carried out using probabilistic methods. A detailed discontinuity mapping and assessment of the rock mass provided the orientation data used in this study. The orientation data were reduced and analyzed to identify the discontinuity sets. A statistical analysis provided information about the distribution of the data. A deterministic wedge stability analysis identified the critical combination of discontinuities; those with a low factor of safety were further studied using probabilistic kinematic and kinetic stability analyses. The results from this approach were used to obtain the reliability or probability of failure of the slopes.

P. T. Pacific Nikkel Indonesia (PTPNI) was incorporated in Jakarta, Indonesia in February, 1969 by a group of Dutch and North American companies. At the same time, a Contract of Work with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia was signed, granting Pacific Nikkel all the necessary licenses and permits to explore and develop all nonradioactive minerals in two separate areas in Irian Jaya, eastern Indonesia. Nickel mineralization occurrences were confirmed by Dutch geologists in the two areas in 1952 and 1955, however, detailed exploration began in June 1969 after the Contract of Work was signed. Since that time, numerous studies and investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of producing metallic nickel in Irian Jaya. Four engineering studies, two bulk sample tests, an oceanographic survey, and a preliminary site investigation indicated that construction and operation of a nominal 100 million pounds per year metallic nickel plant on Gag Island were technically feasible. The fourfold increase in the price of oil in late 1973 without a corresponding adjustment in the price of nickel necessitated a reevaluation of the project, the results of which showed that the project required other conditions to be viable. Subsequently, analysis of: the future projected nickel supply-demand and cost-price relationships, the economics of treating a higher grade feed, and participation by the Government of Indonesia, indicate that the project will be viable. Therefore, planning of the Gag Island Nickel Laterite Project is continuing with the objective of commencing production to supply the market in the 1983-1984 time period.

Modeling and simulation are two major tools available to a mineral process engineer for a consistent and systematic process analysis. The application of these tools to the analysis of specific mineral processing unit operations is well documented in the literature; nevertheless, they are used only to a limited extent in the industry. This is because the fundamental principles of modeling and simulation in the context of mineral processing context are not available. This paper represents the first in a series of papers planned to meet this need. General principles of process modeling and a unified mineral process model development methodology are presented. A simple example of model development using the flotation unit operation is given. A discussion of the practical significance, challenges and opportunities associated with mineral process modeling is included.

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."
