INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

Hydrometallurgical processes involve the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, calcines, mattes and scrap materials by a series of operations involving leaching or dissolution, separation, purification and reduction of metals in aqueous solutions. The underlying theoretical basis of many of these operations is electrochemical in nature and it is the purpose of this review to identify and illustrate, by way of examples from the author's experience and that of others, the central role of interfacial electrochemistry in the understanding, design and control of these operations.

This paper covers the development of the Yeelirrie Uranium Project from the discovery of the Yeelirrie deposit in 1970 to the present time, with emphasis on the mining, processing, and environmental requirements of the project. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project is managed by the "Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership", which, when formed, consisted of Yeelirrie Development Company Pty., Ltd., Urangesellschaft, Australia Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. The Yeelirrie Uranium Joint Venture Partnership holds mineral claims over the Yeelirrie uranium ore deposit in Western Australia. This deposit encompasses some 35 million tonnes of ore containing in excess of 50,000 tonnes of uranium as U308. Agreement has been reached with the State of Western Australia to mine and process the ore to produce uranium ore concentrate. The Project scope provides for an open-cut mine, alkaline leach hydrometallurgy plant, power plant, township, airstrip, access roads, community services and utilities. The Yeelirrie Uranium Project described herein has progressed through the stages of exploration, mine evaluation, process testing, project scope definition, environmental approval, Pilot Plant operation, preliminary engineering and the publishing of a definitive Project Feasibility Study. This article summarizes the project development through the above stages.

Networks of monitoring wells were established prior to mining at four longwall mine sites in the Appalachians to monitor the effect of mining on water levels, water quality and well yield. Two of the sites were located in stream valleys and the other two sites were located on hilltops. The depth to the mined seam ranged from 500-850 feet with the deeper cover being associated with the hilltop sites. Maximum declines in groundwater levels during and after mining were an order of magnitude less in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. However, water levels in hilltop wells located outside the area immediately above the panel were unaffected. Water quality changes in wells as a result of longwall mining were negligible at all four sites. Increases in aquifer transmissivity and well yield were much more pronounced in the stream valley aquifers than in the hilltop aquifers. The significantly larger recharge area for the stream valley aquifers than that for the hilltop aquifers may partially account for the differing responses of these two classes of aquifers to longwall mining. These observations appear to be consistent with the stress-relief fracture model for Appalachian Plateau groundwater hydrology proposed by Wyrick and Borchers in 1981.

Previous studies of the Thompson and Temperly ore bodies show alteration aureoles in the Middle Ordovician host-rock limestones, dolomites and shales extending laterally as much as 60m from the ore. Thickness, texture, carbonate and clay mineralogy, major-, minor-, and trace-element contents; and carbonate carbon and carbonate oxygen Isotope compositions of the host rocks all have been significantly altered by hydrothermal processes. Organic geochemical analyses of samples from the basal 8-cm-thick carbonaceous shale bed and immediately overlying limestone bed of the Quimbys Mill Member of the Platteville Formation, collected from within the ore, the alteration aureole, and the unaltered country rock show: 1) solution of carbonates and residual concentration of organic matter, 2) decreases in the volatile (Si) and pyrolytic (S2) hydrocarbon yields In samples of the basal shale from within the ore, 3) decreases in the relative amounts of the lower molecular weight (<nC25) saturated hydrocarbons in samples from the ore, and 4) no changes in either the organic carbon isotope composition or the Rock-Eval or biomarker thermal maturation Indicators. In light of the 125-170°C depositional temperatures documented for the early marmatitic sphalerltes in these deposits by fluid Inclusion studies, the lack of thermal alteration of the organic matter suggests a relatively short mineralization episode, a conclusion supported by the relatively simple sphalerite band stratigraphy. The decreases in the volatile and pyrolytic hydrocarbon yields for shale samples from the ore supports a model for mineral deposition which obtains sulfide through reaction of brine sulfate and indigenous organic matter.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

During much of the 1970s and 1980s, world metal consumption grew more slowly than during the 19505 and 1960s. The slowdown contributed to surplus capacity and low real prices because actual consumption was consistently less than expected as new mining and mineral processing capacity came on stream. Over the last year or so, however, world metal consumption has picked up noticeably, raising the question, Has metal demand returned to the long-run growth rates more typical of the 1950s and 1960s than of the 1970s and 1980s? This paper examines this possibility and, more generally, assesses the factors that will shape demand for the major metals over the longer term. TRENDS IN METAL CONSUMPTION The extent to which metal consumption has recaptured the brisk growth rates typical of the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s is shown in Figure 1. This figure traces the consumption of crude steel, primary aluminum, refined copper, refined lead, and refined zinc between 1960 and 1987 for the western world, consisting of the OECD countries (including the United States), and the developing countries. Consumption increased in 1987 for all five metals, and preliminary data for the first six months of 1988 suggest even more substantial increases, at least for the United States (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1988). However, Figure 1 also shows that the recent increases in consumption are not untypical of similar surges during earlier periods of economic expansion and thus may reflect only cyclical or temporary factors. In short, the available data are unable to provide a clear indication of whether recent increases in metal consumption reflect the beginning of a new era of faster growth or simply a cyclical and temporary upturn associated with the expansionary phase of the business cycle. Consequently, to pursue this issue, we are forced to examine the underlying forces that will shape metal demand trends over the next decade. The approach we have taken involves two steps. The first examines the prospects for overall economic growth. The expectation is, the faster the economy expands, the faster the production of metal-containing goods grows.2

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively constant, longwall production levels during the last five years have increased significantly. In the United States, longwall mining now accounts for approximately 50% of all underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust-compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face-ventilation system and the advancement of face-ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, examined several basic principles of the long wall face-ventilation system and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face-ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face-ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face airflow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels of using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the face air¬flow and to manage face airflow to effectively minimize dust exposure to face workers. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980s and 1990s, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

The effect of addition of a flotation collector (dodecylammonium chloride) on grinding of quartz has been studied. The data obtained are correlated with the results of tests conducted under similar chemical conditions to study influence of these additives on relevant basic sub-processes (primary breakage, pulp fluidity, and dispersion and flocculation of ground products). Such correlations suggest that the role of chemical additives in grinding is determined by their cumulative influence on the above mentioned basic properties of the system.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

In this paper a method is presented for estimating the specifications of sandstone-type uranium deposits which will be the minimum that can meet a company&apos;s economic requirements for investment. The method interpolates and extrapolates from available cost data for typical mines to provide the costs for a wide range of possible deposits. The range of deposits achieving the company&apos;s required discounted cash flow rate of return on investment at an estimated uranium oxide selling price is then calculated, thus giving the complete range of deposits which meet the minimum required specifications. Prospects are then evaluated by comparison with these minimum requirements.

Air-fall tuffs have been altered to zeolite via reaction of volcanic glass with local pore solutions at the six localities discussed in this paper. These are in the southern Basin and Range Province of Arizona and New Mexico, and in the Trans-Pecos and Coastal Plain regions of Texas. Zeolitization occurred in either closed- hydrologic, open-hydrologic, or hydrothermal groundwater systems. The tripping Spring Valley (DSV) chabazite in Arizona and the Buckhorn clinoptilolite in New Mexico originated in a late Cenozoic network of closed-hydrologic, lacustrine basins extending from southeast Arizona into southwest New Mexico. At DSV, two potentially commercial chabazite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustine mudstone. The main zeolite tuft contains up to 90 percent chabazite. The upper zeolite tuff averages approximately 67 precent chabazite. At the Buckhorn deposit, two clinoptilolite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustrine m udstone in the upper part of the Gila Conglomerate. The lower zeolite tuff contains up to 90 percent clinoptilolite. The upper zeolite tuff contains over 60 percent clinoptilolite. The Casa Piedra clinoptilolite is in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. It formed during the Tertiary in a closed basin containing a playa lake. The Casa Piedra tuff averages about 60 percent clinoptilolite. Air-fall tuffs of the Cuchillo Negro, New Mexico and Tilden, Texas clinoptilolite deposits were zeolitically altered by either percolating ground waters in open-hydrologic systems or locally by ponded, saline, alkaline solutions. Cuchillo Negro tuffs are Tertiary and average approximately 50 percent clinoptilolite. Clinoptilolite-rich tuffs of Ebcene age have been mined from four quarries at the Tilden deposits. Tufts from the Kuykendall and Buck Martin quarries contain approximately 50 to 60 percent clinoptilolite. Low temperature, SiO2 - rich, hydrothermal solutions altered air-fall tuff to clinoptilolite and chabazite in the Foster Canyon area of the Tertiary Cedar Hills and Seldon Hills volcanic-vent zone in southcentral New Mexico. Poster Canyon tuffs contain up to 60 percent zeolite and average 40 to 50 percent clinoptilolite. The dominant mineral in the zeolite tufts at the six deposits studied is generally microcrystalline and either chabazite or clinoptilolite. Lithic fragments, unaltered volcanic glass, other zeolites, quartz, calcite, opal-CT, cristobalite, feldspar, evaporites, clays, and mafic minerals are also constituents of the tufts.

The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

INTRODUCTION At the end of 1959, high levels of radioactivity attributed to radon and its daughter products were discovered in the fluorspar mines at St. Lawrence, Newfoundland. These levels were presumed to be the cause of an unusually high incidence of lung cancer among the fluorspar miners (deVilliers & Windish, 1964) (Parsons et al. 1964). The mining of fluorspar (calcium fluoride) began in 1933 as open pit operations but converted to standard underground mining procedures in 1936. During the second world war, production was greatly expanded as a result of increased demand for fluorspar used in the production of steel. Wet drilling was first introduced into general use in 1942. Ventilation was mainly by natural draft occasionally supplemented by small blowers. The amount of ventilation varied greatly between mines as well as over time. For example, one large mine, the Iron Springs mine, had only a single small raise to the surface some 600&apos; from the central shaft. Other mines, such as the Director mine, had a number of raises to the surface and, as a result, had far better ventilation. Mines also varied by the amount of ground-water which seeped into them. In the early 1950&apos;s, an unusually large number of lung cancer cases were diagnosed among the fluorspar miners. As a result, in 1956 and 1957, J.P. Windish of Canada&apos;s Department of Health and Welfare tested for possible causative agents in the mines. Unfortunately, radon measurements were not conducted until 1959 and 1960 when Windish tested Director mine as did the A.D. Little company in 1960. As a result of the high radon levels found, mechanical ventilation was introduced and the concentration of radon dauthers fell, on the average to well below 1 WL. During this period, lung cancer cases continued to be diagnosed with 29 lung cancer deaths recorded by 1964 and 71 by 1971. As of July 1981, 105 lung cancer cases had been identified (Hollywood, 1981). Previous reports concerning the fluorspar miners have dealt in detail with the factors in the occupational environment and discussed occupational mortality patterns. The purpose of this paper is to review further the mortality experience with particular reference to lung cancer in relation to cumulated radiation exposure and to describe briefly our ongoing study of this group. METHODS Occupational histories were prepared for men who had been employed by the mining companies at St. Lawrence during the period 1933 to 1977. The histories were compiled from company records except for the period 1933 to 1936, records for which were lost in a fire; however, the occupational histories for this period were completed by searching census records and interviewing company officials, ex-employees and others. In addition, occupational and smoking histories were also obtained for some miners during a survey conducted in 1978. Occupational records included name and date of birth as well as the type, place and hours of work by year. For each year prior to 1960, hours of work were converted to working months (1 WM = 167 hours) and were multiplied by the estimated average radon daughter concentration in working levels (WL) to yield the annual radiation exposure in working level months (WLM). Pre-1960 radiation levels were estimated on the basis of the history of mining methods employed, ventilation history of the mine, type and place of work and conditions under which the first radiation measurements were made in 1959 and 1960 (deVilliers and Windish, 1964). During the period from 1960 to 1967, the average exposure was about 0.5 WL. Beginning in 1968, radiation levels were measured more frequently, and, beginning in 1969, daily exposures for each worker were recorded based on radiation levels in the place worked on a given day. Mortality data were obtained from medical certificates of death. In a small number of cases, medically certified death certificates were unavailable. In these cases, probable cause of death were obtained from forms completed by the local clergyman (returns of death), parish records, information obtained from interviews with family members of the deceased and/or hospital information, before assigning a cause of death. Data obtained from these sources were found in Tables 1, 2 and 4, cover the time period 1933 to 1971. Data in Table 3 as well as in Figures 1 through 3 cover deaths from 1933 to 1977, and includes only those miners for whom medical certificates of death were available. Two medically certified causes of death were changed from other causes to lung cancer on the basis of pathology reports.

INTRODUCTION In the coal industry, ever greater amounts of fine coal must be processed due to the need to crush to finer sizes for impurity liberation in low cost physical cleaning processes. Fine coal processing is a major problem for the industry, both through the cost of disposal of reject fines and through the mining cost of lost coal values. Of the available disposal methods, impoundment has always been the most popular. In many cases, when the coal fines were of sufficient quality, froth flotation and expensive filtration methods were used to recover the coal in these waste streams. The coal fines are not always of a marketable quality, however, and flotation, due to poor yields and difficult dewatering, has always been an expensive and not necessarily profitable process. The oil agglomeration method is increasingly important as a technology for the treatment of fine coal-in-water suspensions. These fines can be preferentially wetted and agglomerated by many different oils mixed with the suspensions. Ash-forming impurities remain in suspension and are rejected when the agglomerates are recovered, for example, by screening. Agglomeration-based methods provide perhaps the only practical means for upgrading extremely fine coal to useful products on a large scale. As with froth flotation, oil agglomeration relies on differences in the surface properties of coal and impurities to effect separation. Whereas flotation be- comes less effective with particles finer than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) or coarser than 50 mesh (0.3 mm), there appears to be no lower limit on particle size for oil agglomeration while particles % in. (3.175 mm) diameter or larger can also be treated, if desirable. In addition to this ability to clean a broader size range of coal particles, oil agglomeration can produce a dense, coarse granular product of acceptable strength and low water content without the need for vacuum or thermal drying. The preferential wetting of solid surfaces by immiscible liquids has been utilized, if not fully understood, for a long time. Indeed Gaudin,229 in tracing the ancestry of froth flotation, refers to a 15th century oil-pulp kneading procedure in which water-wetted particles were freed under water from an oiled mass. This report discusses U.S. Bureau of Mines&apos; research involving modem vehicle position determination techniques in surface mining. The applications would include haul trucks, power shovels, and drilling rigs. Accurate position determination of these vehicles in near real-time is expected to result in safer and more efficient mining operations. The requirements for a vehicle position monitoring and warning system were determined. After screening several concepts, the global positioning system (GPS) and a radar positioning system were selected for further evaluation. A state-of-the-art GPS receiver was taken to a surface mine to assess the feasibility of receiving the satellite signals. A state-of-the-art radar positioning system was evaluated with regard to accuracy.

An integrated steel company is an industrial complex ranging from raw materials mining, through pyrometallurgical smelting and refining, and hot shaping, to product finishing and coating. Within this complex is a great variety of operations which use vast quantities of water, and a variety of water uses which can result in pollution of many different types. The industry has recognized most of its problems for some time, and has spent a great deal of money and effort in reducing and eliminating pollution. A recent survey by AISI showed that the industry has spent, within the last 15 years, two hundred forty millions of dollars on water pollution control, and has authorized spending eighty-seven millions more on this type of non¬productive facilities. While much still remains to be done, I think the record to date is one we can be proud of. In this presentation, we will attempt to outline a number of the water pollution problems encountered in an integrated steel company and to show what types of corrective action have been and are being taken, using Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation as an example.

Silica in the form of sand and sandstone is one of the most common, and at the same time, unique industrial minerals. Found in every rock type of every geologic age and virtually everywhere in the world, silica is used in products that touch just about every aspect of daily life. Imagine a world in the 1990s without computer chips, fiber optics, or glass, and you have just begun to understand how important silica is to the quality of life we enjoy. The elements silicon (Si) and oxygen (0) comprise roughly 60% of the earth&apos;s lithosphere to a depth of about 16 km. The crystal structure of silicon dioxide consists of one atom of silicon bonded to four surrounding atoms of oxygen to form a three-dimensional network of SiO, tetrahedra. This network makes up the mineral quartz (Murphy and Henderson, 1983), the most common detrital mineral in most sandstones. Quartz is also a major constituent of many igneous and metamorphic rocks and is widespread as a siliceous cementing agent in various rock types. Although quartz is common, sandstones, quartzites, and pegmatites and the unconsolidated sediments derived from them that have a silica content high enough and pure enough to meet today&apos;s market demands for quality and consistency are not common. USES AND SPECIFICATIONS Silica sand that is mined and processed for industrial uses must conform to the chemical and physical specifications set by customers. In the United States almost half of the silica sand produced is used in the manufacture of glass. Other important products include foundry sand, ground silica, blasting sand, and fracturing sand. Glass Sand Silica is the principal glass-forming oxide in a glass batch. Glass manufacturers develop model specifications for each source of silica sand used. These specifications broadly define the limits and ranges for chemical and physical properties of the sand and are used by the manufacturer in calculating the desired batch mix or formula. Some specifications may be critical to a glassmaker and require very stringent limits on the quantity of impurities in the sand. For example, the total iron oxide content of a batch is extremely crucial when making white or flint glasses (Mills, 1983). Iron is present in almost every raw material used in a glass batch and must be carefully controlled in order to obtain a consistent color in the finished product. It is difficult, however, for a raw material supplier to tightly control the chemistry of a naturally occurring material such as silica sand. To a great extent the commercial quality of a sand is determined by its geologic history. Realizing this, glass producers tailor their model specifications to each source of approved material. In general, a glass company is concerned most about the consistency of raw materials on a day-to-day basis. Soda-lime-silica glass was the earliest type of manmade glass (Baker-Can, 1967) and still accounts for most of the glass manufactured for commercial use today (Mills, 1983). It is relatively easy to melt and shape and is less expensive per ton to produce than most other types of glass (Baker-Can, 1967). Soda-lime-silica glass is used in fabricating containers, flat glass products, incandescent and fluorescent lamps, glass fiber, and many other products. Heavy minerals such as ilmenite, leucoxene, kyanite, and zircon are impurities on which strict limits are placed for a glass batch. Because of their refractory nature they either do not melt or only partially melt, which results in stones or feathers in finished glass. Aluminosilicates such as kyanite also contribute unwanted alumina to the batch as they partially melt. Limits are especially rigid for refractory mineral grains coarser than 0.60 to 0.425 mm (30 to 40 mesh).
