An information system (I/S) plan is a means for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to provide the information required for achievement of organizational goals and objectives. The rapid advancements in information technology, the increasing complexity of systems, and the growing dependence of mining companies on these information systems have emphasized the need for more comprehensive I/S planning. This subsection explores this need, the role I/S planning can play within a mining company, and finally describes a methodology for development of an I/S plan.

Thirteen kinetic models that mathematically describe the flotation process have been statistically evaluated for the flotation of copper, lead and zinc ores. Comparisons have been made for a variety of circuits involving roughing, cleaning, scavenging and regrind followed by cleaning. Variations in collectors, frothers, depressants and activators have been considered. Based on the statistical criteria used for the evaluation, and the reagent, circuit and ore variations studied, the most reliable flotation models have been identified and subsequently used to characterize the metallurgical results.

A method of monitoring production information (raw tonnage and machine state) from each working section has been developed. The method is based on the sensing of electrical parameters in each section load center, and the reporting of this information through the existing mine-wide monitoring system. A decision-theoretic type of pattern classification technique has been used to define the machine states. The basis of the method is presented in this paper, along with a proposed hardware and software implementation scheme. Information issues central to the development and use of the proposed production monitoring system are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use. Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper-gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7.5 kt/d (8270 stpd). Mill throughput remained at that rate for several years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) ore body. This discovery prompted three succes¬sive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20 kt/d (22,000 stpd). In 1988, the discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit launched an era of much larger expansions. The first of these was the installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 that increased throughput to 32 kt/d (35,270 stpd). That was followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and in 1991 the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57 kt/d (62,830 stpd). The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 brought production to its current level of 66 kt/d (72,750 stpd).

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies, and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing, and evaluating administrative controls, and a list of administrative controls, are reported.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

In 2001, the Minntac Division of US-Steel retrofitted one of their Grate-Kiln Iron Ore Pelletizng lines with a Ported-Kiln Air Injection System (PKAIS) the first of it’s kind in the world for oxide pellets. The Ported Kiln System injects air under the bed of pellets in the rotary kiln, causing rapid oxidation of the magnetite pellets. This rapid oxidation allows for lower kiln temperatures, reducing fuel demand; less heat load on the annular cooler; and higher pellet quality. Both the process and the equipment are patented developments by Metso Minerals. This paper discusses the process, the key equipment, and the benefits to the pellet plant and the downstream blast furnace operations.

The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.

Pastefill is being increasingly considered as a viable fill by underground mine operators. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) chose pastefill to fill their deep copper mine (>1200m deep) after considering various other types of fill in the feasibility studies. During the development of pastefill at Mount Isa (1996 - to date) the Mining research of MIM developed two cost effective, reliable and simple testing methods and used. With the help of these tests the behaviour of MIM pastefill was studied thoroughly and the most optimum mix design for pastefill was achieved. The MIM's pastefill plant, the largest in the world with a capacity of 450rph continuous pastefill production and unique in the process used, has been built (1998-1999) to produce pastefill to the specification developed through extensive testing program using the Flow Cone and Mini Slump cone Tests. As a consequence, it is now possible to select the optimum pastefill mix designs and predict their flow behaviour in bore holes or pipe lines using only these tests. MIM Blended Tailings Pastefill (BTPF) uses 3-3.55 Portland cement and the cost of pastefill is much lower than the total tailings pastefill, that could be produced from the same tailings.

The estimation of local recoveries, such as the local recovered tonnage of ore and its corresponding grade at a given cutoff grade, is an important problem in a selective mining operation. Multigaussian kriging provides a simple solution to this specific problem. The solution is also complete in the sense that local recoveries are estimated together with their estimation variances. It is thus possible to assess confidence limit intervals on the estimated recoveries. Multigaussian kriging has been applied to the Jerritt Canyon deposit in a most realistic situation. The various steps of the estimation procedure are presented in detail and the potential of the method is demonstrated in view of the results. The obtained results show that the estimated recoveries are in good agreement with the actual recoveries and the actual estimation errors are correctly predicted by the estimation variances. Multigaussian kriging thus appears as a useful and fully operationable tool for the mining industry.

Underground mining is a very complicated and complex industrial activity. The uncertain and, in most cases, the incomplete knowledge of the geological and mineralogical nature of the deposits can cause unforeseen difficulties. For a safe and uninterrupted operation, in addition to good planning and scheduling, reliable and up-to-date monitoring and control of all processes and conditions become necessary. Today, this is even more important in view of increasingly difficult working conditions, poorer grades, and more complex and expensive machinery. In short, large capital investment and higher risk of financial losses are involved in modern-day mining operations. Monitoring and control of the underground mining process has become a very complex and difficult task in itself. Many different systems are available, and the correct choice .is of utmost importance from both the economic and safety points of view. This chapter will deal with aspects of underground production monitoring and control. There are, however, many other areas of equal importance which are covered in an excellent manner in a hand- book by Olaf (1976) on monitoring and control of underground operations.

Limestone is potentially a low cost material for the neutralization of acid mine drainage and other acidic waters such as steel pickling liquor. Unfortunately, when limestone is reacted wit9 these waters containing large amounts of Fe , Fe+3, and SO4-2 , a coating of gypsum and iron hydroxides form on the surface of the limestone inhibiting further neutralization reactions. The nature of these coatings, their morphology, composition and thickness were evaluated using the scanning electron microscope and microprobe, and the kinetics of limestone dissolution was studied both in the presence and in the absence of the reaction-inhibiting coatings. These data were then correlated with the solution chemistry.

Then the researcher must know the structure and composition of the mineral and its physical and chemical properties. Can these properties be changed by processing particle size and shape modification, and surface chemical treatment? Examples of tactical R & D in the industrial minerals area will be described.

Because of its many advantages, roof bolting has been widely used in hard-rock underground mines. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground, and the affects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite-element program, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field and the displacement, field around a mine opening. Openings that were supported by roof bolts and openings that were unsupported were both analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration, i.e., a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts is less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. In addition to the concentration of ammonia, the parameters that affect adsorption include temperature, degree of agitation and anion and cation concentrations. In the study, it was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions is dependent on the initial silver concentration in the solution. It was also found that the recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions is not as effective us gold. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rapid initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy ,for the adsorption was measured at 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. Introduction The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall et al., 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal and post-test examination of a 10-cm-long x 10-cm-diam cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ. A test hole was diamond cored in the recrystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diam, and dips at 10.4°. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends. Seal installation Surveys to assist in selecting the interval to seal consisted of core logging, video logging and constant-head injection tests using a straddle-packer unit. The location selected, 3 m from the lower end of the hole, had low hydraulic conductivity (3 x 10-10 to 3 x 10-9 cm/sec) and was free of significant fractures. The grout used, an expansive Class A cement, was provided by Dowell-Schlumberger, Tulsa, OK. A grout mass about 1.5 m in length was installed, with a dump bailer, above a temporary mechanical plug. Groundwater in the hole, if any, was minimal during placement. After 13 days of curing, the grout mass was partially drilled out from both ends, leaving a seal 10 cm long. Water distribution in rock mass The distribution of water and fluid pressure in the rock mass near the seal appears to be complex. The generally dry condition of the borehole and rock mass suggests that the rock mass near the seal was unsaturated prior to the injection tests of this research. The injection tests presumably created an expanding saturated zone around the seal. However, anomalously high fluid pressures, consistently recorded by one of two piezometers installed near the seal, suggest connection to a source of significant natural hydraulic head. Comparable head variations for closely spaced piezometers have been reported by others (Sowers, 1976). [ ] Seal testing The seal was tested for 3.5 years, using steady constant-head, tracer travel-time, dye-injection, head-buildup and transient constant-head tests. These tests are fully described in Greer and Daemen, 1991. In the head-buildup test, transient flow occurs through the seal (and rock mass) to a closed, water-filled interval of the borehole adjacent to the seal. The test consists of monitoring the rise in head in the closed interval until steady conditions are approached. The test may be analyzed in terms of a one dimensional analytical model to obtain the effective hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and specific storage (Sss) of the seal. Analysis in terms of an axisymmetric three-dimensional numerical model may yield properties of both the seal and rock mass.
