The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

The froth flotation of coal, differing greatly from that of most minerals1-5, is not improved but rather impaired by temperatures higher than room temperature6-10 This phenomenon has long taunted us for an explanation. Gayle and Associates 8,9 reported the lack of relationship between their contact angle measurements and their flotation of American coals under various temperatures. Bailey and Whelan6 stated that the viscosity of flotation reagents, offering some clue for their flotation of British coals at low temperatures, could not be put forward as an explanation either in whole or in part for the effect of temperatures on coal-flotation. In this paper, a froth hypothesis is proposed to explain the flotation behavior of coals under various pulp temperatures. Test work involved the flotation of coals and the frothing of reagents.

Relationships among mine and injured miner characteristics and HSAC's degrees of injury are examined for 91,404 injuries in under- ground bituminous coal mines in the United States from 1975 through 1982. Injury severity varies by the mining system, geographical region, circumstances surrounding the injury, the injured miner's age, whether the miner was using powered equipment, the year which the injury occurred, and the location in the mine where the injury happened. Injury severity is not related to the injured miner's total mining experience, job experience, and experience in the mine in which the injury occurred.

This paper deals with the actual application of a direct digital control to simple as well as complex industrial process control loops, Fundamental descriptions of preliminary research and design are described briefly, as is the development of the present day controller and control computer. The results and effects of direct digital control in various types of single and cascaded loops as opposed to the use of conventional controls are discussed. Computer supervision of a process and control override are taken into account, in addition to methods of short and long term plant economic optimization.

Approximately 30 miles east of Chicago on the southern shores of Lake Michigan stands Bethlehem Steel's newest fully integrated steelmaking facility - the billion dollar Burns Harbor plant. The initial phase of "green field" construction that began in 1963 was directed to the creation of high quality finishing facilities. In late 1964 the 160" plate mill came "on stream" followed closely by Sheet and Tin and Hot Strip facilities. Unit train shipments of slabs primarily from the Lackawanna plant located near Buffalo constituted the input materials for the new mills. In 1967 a hot metal facilities program was announced for Burns Harbor that at its completion would make the plant fully integrated. Incorporated within the program were: 1. A new high performance 50" x 96" slabbing mill complete with a battery of soaking pits. 2. A two vessel Basic Oxygen Furnace Shop. 3. (1) battery of 6 meter high Coke Ovens with attendant coal handling facilities. 4. A 3800 feet long vessel loading & unloading dock. 5. The first conveyor belt fed Blast Furnace in the United States. 6. An extensive materials handling system for receiving, stocking and reclaiming from storage the raw materials for the Blast Furnace and Coke Ovens operation. The intent of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the functions and components of the materials handling system noted above.

The most economical method of reclaiming land that has been mined, whether it be in urban areas or in rural areas, is when the final configuration of the mining area is that which is required by the subsequent use. Surprisingly, there are a number of examples of this situation. In the arid southwest where water production for the expanding population is a problem, many urban sand & gravel excavation areas subsequently serve as holding basins for ground water recharge. In other areas of the county where water is not in short supply, sand and gravel excavations can be planned in such a way that subsequent land uses such as parks and homesites can be enhanced by utilizing the excavated areas as a water amenity. Reclaiming land for agriculture is another example of utilizing the excavated area for a subsequent use providing the excavated area has not been mined too deep. Other than replacing the layer of topsoil on the excavated area, the final configuration of the mining area is in many cases ready for the subsequent agricultural use.

Data on sulfonate adsorption by silicate minerals are very scarce in the literatures. Perhaps the only comprehensive paper written on the topic was done by Fuerstenau and Bhappu (1); this work dealt exclusively with quartz but included many important suggestions as to the form and nature of the hydroxy-sulfonate species of some cations formed during the conditioning step and their effect on the flotation response of quartz. Another paper by the same authors (2) contains additional data on the role of hydrolysis in sulfonate flotation of beryl. As postulated by Fuerstenau and Bhappu, a solid form of cationic sulfonate functions as the collecting species to produce flotation of quartz and beryl. According to the authors, the solid compound is a hydroxy-sulfonate of a given cation, where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl part provides a means for bonding of the species to the mineral surface; thus, the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance to produce flotation. Although the preceding examples illustrate the effect of a sulfonate collector in silicate systems other than plagioclases, they are important as examples of processes of hydroxy-sulfonate complex formation. Since the plagioclase minerals con¬tain Ca(II) and Al(III) cations, which are very reactive in sulfonate media (1), the formation of hydroxy-sulfonate compounds with these cations released from the solid phase may well prove to be the cause for their flotation.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." Most mining methods are evolved slowly and are the result of the combined efforts of a number of minds; Deidesheimer's feat was remarkable in that his system was immediately successful. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulation 10 CFR 60 requires that the ventilation system for the geologic repository be designed to: (1) control the transport of radioactive particulates and gases, (2) assure continued function during normal operations and under accident conditions, and (3) separate the ventilation of excavation and emplacement areas. The ventilation system design should take into account thermal loading; maintenance of the retrieval option and-the separation of the development and emplacement ventilation circuits. An analysis was performed by NRC's contractor, Engineers International on the ventilation system design described in the Department of Energy's conceptual design for Nevada. The ventilation analysis is of a preliminary nature. The conclusions presented in this paper reflect the views of the authors and may not represent the views of the NRC. In this analysis, available Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation (NNWSI) ventilation design information was reviewed and a ventilation network analysis was performed.

Southern Arizona has one of the world's principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

During the past year a number of significant advances in geostatistics have been published. These were presented at the 13th APCOM Symposium in Clausthal, Germany and at a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Geostatistics in Rome, Italy. Of greatest importance is the work that has been done in establishing methods which correctly predict the cutoff grade-tonnage curves, and the average grade of ore-tonnage curves for deposits in which ore and waste are intermingled. Grade-tonnage curves based on estimates made from widely spaced exploration data have been found to underestimate the grade of ore and overestimate the tonnage present. This problem has been remedied by the calculation of conditional probability distributions for the unknown grade of a block. Another advance has been made in the field of geostatistical estimation for deposits in which a trend is present. Previously a technique known as universal kriging has been used, which involves much subjective judgement as to the trend fitted. A new technique, generalized increments, allows computer estimation of such deposits with much less subjective judgement. Computational efficiency of geostatistical methods has continued to improve to a point where a geostatistical estimate can be obtained for little more than the cost of any other computerized method.

The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies. A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec. Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.03 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0. 10 mg/M3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. It was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed. Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. So far, we have developed and reported on algorithms that automatically produce accurate time-study reports of continuous miner data from kilowatt sensors at the Deserado Mine, and we are extending the system to accept other types of sensor data input. This paper focuses on AI techniques that improve accuracy of the numerical algorithms in the PRS module. Additional AI work for the KRS module is summarized in this paper.

"When using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during tunneling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These reduce the stability of tunnels, and can result in considerable economic losses. This paper analyzes the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are evaluated considering both the occurrence probability and the impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which a risk event occurred during tunnel construction, is analyzed utilizing the Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Shield TBM, to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method has been widely adopted in numerous tunneling projects because, as a mechanized tunneling method, it is also environmentally friendly, exhibiting minimal noise and vibration when compared with conventional tunneling method. In addition, it provides considerable economic benefits that allow for a high advance rate for long drives during construction. However, the TBM method has a limitation, as it is unable to deal with unexpected situations during construction, as the system is not capable of moving backwards. This leads to delays or even stoppages, and a corresponding increase in construction costs due to the need to arrange for alternative equipment and solutions. It is essential to retain systematic management in order to prevent or deal with unforeseen consequences such as the collapse of a tunnel face, ground surface upheaval or settlement, and construction delay due to water leakage during construction. Therefore, a systematic risk management system that is applicable during the construction stage of the TBM tunnel should be developed, taking into account the predicted risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face in advance."

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

Lime and limestone-based SO2 scrubbing processes have demonstrated reasonably good success in removing low concentrations of SO2 from flue gases. While most of the operating problems experienced in the early days of scrubbing have been worked out, problems usually increase and removal efficiency drops with increased amounts of SO2 present in the gas stream. In order to overcome these difficulties, yet still taking advantage of lime and limestone as the lowest cost neutralizing agents, a host of so-called double- alkali systems were developed. These processes take advantage of cations such as Na+ and NH4+ capable of forming highly water soluble bases or basic salts, such as hydroxide, carbonate or sulfite, which having been neutralized or acidified by the absorbed SO2 can be regenerated with a lower cost base such as lime.
