The more important factors controlling the design of pit slopes are related to the local geology over which the designer has little or no control. Nevertheless, there are some factors over which the designer does exert some control and these concern the say in which the rock is excavated and supported. They include blasting, face cleaning, water control, and the use of rock improvement techniques. The paper discusses these factors and relates the extra costs incurred to the steeper slope angles that can usually be obtained. It is demonstrated that even a modest increase in bench angle of 5° through improved excavation techniques can pay off in a single push-back.

Optimization of a process is achieved by selecting, 'from all the known options, the most beneficial method of obtaining a product. It is rare that the optimum process is arrived at by conventional methods, because of the great amount of time required for developing and comparing all the options. On the other hand, it is now possible, by means of an optimization program based on special mathematical formulas involving an algorithm and implemented by a computer, to plot the optimum process realizing considerable savings and in a reasonably short time. The flow sheet arrived at in accordance with the optimization program described in this paper investigates and develops all the possible options and, with the aid of the computer, makes it possible to select the most economical ore beneficiation process. The options in an ore beneficiation process are all the possible trajectories that can be traced through the particle sizes to which the ore is reducible in the extraction of its valuable minerals. Although an ore can have a wide range of composition and several valuable minerals that can be extracted, this paper is concerned with the special case in which only one mineral is extracted from the ore and in which the maximum allowable percentage of impurities in the end product is defined.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a satellite-based monitoring technique that complements other in-situ methods for detecting and measuring surface displacement. Recent advances in data processing algorithms, coupled with the use of high-resolution satellite systems, make it possible to now provide high-frequency InSAR monitoring services, with updated results delivered every time a new satellite image is acquired. The advent of large, continuously updated data sets, however, brings new challenges, including the need to rapidly sift through the data to identify only those points showing relevant ground displacement information. This has been achieved by using trend variation analysis tools, that quickly isolate and highlight only areas of anomalous behavior. The paper focuses on project case studies where continuous InSAR monitoring has proven to be key in identifying displacement trend changes near tunnel alignments.

This paper presents a kinematic approach for blast modeling with examples of blast models that were developed previously. A kinematic approach was applied successfully in developing blasting models that can simulate all blast design parameters for field applications. Several applied blasting models have been developed and applied widely in the world. A kinematic approach to blast modeling refers to using measurements of kinematic quantities such as the velocity, strain, or displacement and well-established assumptions to model blasting phenomena, rather than being restricted to use first principal of physics, such as, the stress- and material-constitutive relations. The kinematic quantities are easy to measure in the field. Due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of rock mass properties, using first principles of physics, many parameters of rock and explosive properties must be involved, which are hard or impossible to quantify. This creates a major impediment when trying to simulate the total process of blasting based upon first principles of physics. The 3D kinematic model for muckpile formation was developed and applied to open pit blasts. The multiple blasthole fragmentation model developed during recent years has been applied successfully to many mine sites around the globe. These models are typical examples of blast modeling using the kinematic approach, which enables the models to catch major trends of the blasting process and explicitly simulate full blast design parameters and complex geometries. Blast modeling using the kinematic approach results in easy model calibration and validation against field measurements and effective applications to practical problems. Using kinematic models of the muckpile formation and the multiple blasthole fragmentation model, this paper demonstrates the merits of the kinematic approach for blast modeling. New developments of the models were also presented in the paper, which illustrate the potential of the kinematic modelling approach.

A realistic simulation model has been used for designing longwall mining, especially for solving operational problems. This paper describes background, development, validation and some applications of the simulation model for mining people who are unfamiliar with O.R. or computer technique, as a simple planning tool. The following items were established: logical analysis and algorithmic design for practical longwall mining, structure of hypothesis behavioral organism, input parameters, using practical knowledge and operational statistics of the mechanized longwall system experienced for many years.

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. As coal reserves at shallow depths continue to be exhausted, a number of U.S. coal mining companies are beginning to develop coal seams previously thought to be coo deep to mine economically. Because of increased cover load, mines operating in deeper seams face unique ground control problems. In addition, the volume of methane gas contained in coal beds increases with depth, and ventilation requirements are much more stringent for deep underground coal mines than for shallower mines. When the longwall mining method is used at great depths, ventilation, ground control, and operational considerations must all be addressed in the design of longwall panels. This paper examines the influence of these factors, particularly ventilation and operational considerations, upon the feasibility of two, three, and four-entry longwall development panels in Jim Walter Resources' four deep mines.

Ladies and Gentlemen, There have been no less than ten major coal project financings in the last eighteen months. Each of these has been in the order of $100 million to $1 billion for the development of a coal property and its associated infrastructure. It is appropriate at this time to review the nature of these past financings. Why has there been so much activity? There are primarily two reasons. The first is due to the large number of contracts which were signed as a result of OPEC oil shocks. High projections were made for increased coal consumption particularly in world trade. This is distinct from domestic coal mine/power plant projects which often tap a government source of funds. Second is the high cost of coal development in the 1980's compared with a typical company's corporate borrowing capacity.

"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

The increasing energy crisis, coupled with stringent environ- mental regulations, has created new demands for high capacity materials handling systems with unit train transporting and continuing surveillance of quality control. Effective and efficient methods of material conveyance are through high speed, high volume conveyor belts with the monitoring of quality through the utilization of automatic sampling. When we speak of high speed, high volume belt discharges we are referring to speed ranges from 600 to 750 FPM and volumes as high as 5500 TPH. To achieve the optimum operating sampling system for high capacity belt discharges, it is imperative that two major design characteristics be investigated and evaluated; namely technical analysis of operating conditions through application of ASTM design criteria and practical experience in the selection of equipment and the design of related components. The task of obtaining a sample of reasonable weight to represent an entire lot presents a number of problems and emphasizes the necessity for using standard sampling procedures.

This paper is concerned with applied platinum resistance thermometry which involves many considerations absent in precision thermometry. The historical development of the Callendar-Van Dusen Equation which describes the resistance- temperature relation of pure platinum is discussed. The advantage of using platinum resistance temperature sensors over thermocouples is described, and the improvements in design and construction of these sensors that have come about in the past few years are discussed. Integral and remote bridges that convert resistance changes into voltage together with signal conditioning techniques and equipment for voltage or current signals are described. Errors encountered in temperature measuring schemes and methods to reduce these errors are summarized.

The effect of selective dispersants as wet grinding aids for ores is demonstrated on laboratory scale batch and continuous grinding equipment. A complete characterization of behavior is performed on a given ore to demonstrate correlations involving torque, % solids, net production rate, and slurry weight and volume loading. The relationship between such laboratory data and industrial scale testing results is very consistent.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. After a decade of high copper prices, major mining companies are renewing their interest in purchasing operating properties and/or development of ore bodies. An existing operation carries with it a history that can present unique opportunities, while a greenfield operation allows for the establishment of a defined culture. Capital investments are distinctly different. A comparison of BHP Copper Robinson Operation, a greenfield property, and BHP Copper Tintaya Operation, a government owned Peruvian property, will provide insights into mining, concentrating and cultural differences between North and South American Operations.

Sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. The pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors and it was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of the shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is discussed in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes.

Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

The Picher Mining District, located principally in north-eastern Oklahoma, was one of the world's largest lead-zinc mining areas during its 55 year life. The field covers an area of approximately 72 square miles (186 km.-); an estimated 1.6 x [103 yds3 of material (1.22 x 103m3)] worth in excess of one billion dollars, has been mined. Mining activities were typified by surface exploratory drilling identifying ore distribution and extension of underground workings to the lead and zinc deposits outlined. Exploration holes were either left unplugged or plugged at the surface with a section of a telephone pole. Low grade ore and waste rock were discarded in mined out portions of drifts. These waste piles containing pyrite and marquisette were left underground and oxidized during the many years of active mining. Upon cessation of mining activities in the mid-1960's, the drifts and shafts of the abandoned workings began to flood as the cone of depression filled in, leading to the dissolution of the oxidized sulfides and the formation of large volumes of acid mine water in the mined out openings. The resulting poor quality water, with high concentrations of cadmium, iron, lead and zinc, began discharging at the surface in 1979. Contamination of the underlying aquifer supplying local residents was first detected on a localized scale in 1980. The present surface water and ground water contamination have lead to the area being classified as one of the top ten hazardous waste sites in the U.S. by the EPA under the superfund program.

For the years 1990 and 1991, West Virginia's underground coal small-mine fatality rate « 20 employees) was approximately ten times higher than the national coal industry rate. Although the total number of fatalities decreased to 17 in 1992 (from 22 in 1991), West Virginia still led ,the nation in coal mining fatals. A team of mining and safety professionals from West Virginia University studied the problem over the past year, interfacing with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training. A clear path for 'formal intervention was determined and is presented here.

Mexico's mineral wealth has long been recognised and indeed has played a historically significant role on a world scale. The dynamics of the Mexican mineral industry have experienced a dramatic transformation especially over the last two decades. This transformation has mainly been instigated by the high growth rates and industrialisation of the Mexican economy since the 1960's. This paper focuses on the base metals sector of the industry which represents one of the major contributors to this transformation. The objective is to present a brief base metals review and to discuss some recent occurrences which pertain to this sector of the industry. This is followed by a discussion of mining's relevance in the current economic situation in Mexico. With this overview as background, the investment climate, primarily from a domestic investor's perspective and secondly in terms of foreign investment, is discussed. Finally, some recent government initiatives, including tax and accounting changes, are outlined. Any one of the sections of this paper can easily be developed into an extensive and indepth analysis; however, the intention of this paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the topics discussed.
