The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.

In any treatment process that requires a coarse feed material to be reduced to a fine size by crushing and/or grinding it must be determined whether a wet or dry comminution system should be utilized. All factors must be evaluated in reaching the decision. Among these factors are: 1) Ecology and Plant Environment: Unfortunately in many instances the decision on wet or dry is based on prejudice resulting from an unnecessary fear of dust. The writers submit that this fear, although once justified, is no longer valid because technology and equipment is now available to collect dust to meet any standard. When dry grinding is used it is very often possible to discard a portion of the waste product in a dry state. This will decrease the size of the tailing pond required. As pollution control standards increase it becomes increasingly difficult to clean up water from tailing ponds. 2) Operating Costs: Steel wear is often five or more times greater in wet grinding than in dry grinding. This is mainly due to corrosion. The evaluation of the economics of dry grinding must of course include the air system and dust collection; similarly in a wet grinding plant related pumping and material handling costs should be included. Pumping costs are often overlooked. This assumes water is made to flow for nothing. Pumping can account for 20 percent of the power consumption in the grinding plant. Large scale comparative tests were conducted in a wet and dry commercial plant in 1970. The same ore was used for both tests. With all factors included in both plants the dry system showed lower horsepower per ton.

The most common experimental approach of studying one variable at a time while holding all others constant is extremely inefficient. Use of statistical methods enables engineers and scientists to obtain meaningful information with the fewest experiments, reducing cost and wasted effort. In particular, the Taguchi method can be more efficient than traditional full factorial experiment designs, as it can study more variables with fewer nuts, and it is more robust against process "noise." Taguchi designs are also simple to formulate and the results can be analyzed by simple PC spreadsheets. The role and benefits of using the Taguchi method in experiments to develop and optimize processes is discussed.

Variations in flotation rate by particle size and specific gravity have been investigated for three different bituminous coals. The flotation rates for various components were determined by separating the products of bulk flotation into size-specific gravity fractions. The effects of feed size and reagent addition on the flotation response of individual size-specific gravity fractions were evaluated.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler' operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. "INTRODUCTION A variety of standing supports are being applied in underground coal mining operations to assist in providing stable mine entries. Standing support performance requirements depend on the nature of the ground deformation behavior, and therefore require a good understanding of the interaction between the support and ground to achieve an optimum roof support system. Mining operations often employ standing support strategies that are unique to their mine. A support system that functions successfully in one situation could fail in another situation. It is important that the design and installation of the standing support systems provide the highest probability of preventing roof falls. Considerable research and development has been conducted by support manufacturers to develop standing support technologies for the mining industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers, with the cooperation of various support manufacturers, have developed a testing protocol that evaluates performance characteristics of these standing support systems.. Using this protocol, each of these support systems has gone through rigorous safety performance testing under controlled loading conditions in NIOSH’s Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). It is important to understand the unique performance characteristics of each type of standing support. This information allows mine operators to determine if the support system is compatible with the conditions in the mine and to compare each support system and determine if that support will provide equivalent or improved support capability. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of support performance to facilitate this objective. SUPPORT DESIGN CRITERIA AND THE GROUND REACTION CURVE Standing roof support systems are designed to prevent unplanned roof falls. The selection of the standing support is based on the interaction of the support with the surrounding rock mass, and its function is to assist the primary support system in maintaining the integrity of the immediate roof. The standing support works to control the immediate roof structure by resisting deformation that contribute to delamination of the bedded layers and displacements that lead to separation of the bolted zone from stable roof structures above the bolted horizon (Barczak, 2005). Standing supports should be installed early enough and develop sufficient capacity to bring deformation of the ground into equilibrium before a critical deformation is reached that leads to a detached block condition, at which point the standing support will be required to carry the entire dead weight of the detached rock mass to prevent a roof fall from occurring (Mucho, 1999). The ground reaction curve (GRC) can be used to assist in determining the compatibility and design requirements for a support system. It is important to understand the significance of the ground reaction relative to the support design requirements. The ultimate objective is to match the support behavior to the ground response and create equilibrium (stability) of the rock mass. This equilibrium is accomplished when the support loading intersects the ground reaction curve (Figure 1). Essentially, the ground reaction concept implies that the convergence in the mine entry is controlled by the magnitude of the support resistance. However, as a passive support, the standing support develops its loading through convergence. As such, the support needs to maintain its load capacity through the associated deformation of the ground and resulting entry convergence until the equilibrium condition is reached. This requirement causes factors such as the support stiffness, peak capacity, yielding characteristics, and stability to be fundamental to proper support design and application. NIOSH contributes to providing this understanding through full-scale performance testing of support products in the Mine Roof Simulator."

To address the drawbacks of the conventional portland cement/fly ash (PC/FA)–based cementitious material currently used in practice to construct pumpable roof supports (PRSs), a novel cementitious material has been developed based on geopolymerization technology. The novel cementitious material is comprised of two pumpable grout streams: Stream 1 is a slurry composed of pozzolanic material and high-calcium additive and stream 2 is an alkaline solution comprised of a gelling agent. Biopolymer has been added to the second stream to provide ductility to the geopolymer cementitious material. In the laboratory scale, systematic experiments have been carried out to investigate the viscosity, setting time, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the new cementitious material and develop the right recipe for field applications. By collaborating with industry and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), full-scale PRSs have been constructed and tested. The results show that (1) the novel cementitious material based PRSs has much higher peak UCS and similar or higher residual strength than the conventional PC/FA-based PRSs; and (2) unlike the PC/FAbased cementitious material, the novel cementitious material shows good long-term durability with nocracking/disintegration when exposed to air.

Gold is often associated with arsenopyrite in many refractory gold ores. The selective recovery of arsenopyrite by flotation is therefore necessary in order to maximize the recovery of gold. However, the complexity of arsenopyrite flotation often makes it difficult to obtain a high recovery from real lean gold ore. This paper presents the results of arsenopyrite flotation by ultrasonic pretreatment in micro flotation experiments and bench scale flotation tests. The tests showed that pure arsenopyrite exhibited low natural floatability due to the oxidation on the mineral surface under ambient conditions. Using ultrasonic pretreatment, the oxidation film was ruptured and the floatability was enhanced greatly. The presence of Fe (III) was found to inhibit the flotation of arsenopyrite and this depression was also removed by the ultrasonic pretreatment. This result explained why the arsenopyrite in real ore is often difficult to float and how ultrasonic pretreatment can effectively improve the arsenopyrite flotation in real gold ores. Guanidine (GMM) was found to be a superior collector for arsenopyrite in acidic medium and xanthate in alkaline medium.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique can be an attractive approach to evaluate the performance of face ventilation systems. To present the capability of the CFD for such a study and for design purposes, a series of simulations using CFD have been performed at the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Kentucky, for different face ventilation arrangements (e.g. different scrubber geometries, brattice (curtain) and continuous miners locations, airflow quantities, etc.). Results from these simulations are displayed as three dimensional graphs and discussed. Needs for the field validation of these results and refinements of design methodologies are also discussed.

The continuous mining machine is a key piece of equipment used in underground coal mining operations. Over the past several decades these machines have been involved in a number of mine worker fatalities. Proximity detection systems have been developed to avert hazards associated with operating continuous mining machines. Incorporating intelligent design into proximity detection systems allows workers greater freedom to position themselves to see visual cues or avoid other hazards such as haulage equipment or unsupported roof or ribs. However, intelligent systems must be as safe as conventional proximity detection systems. An evaluation of the 39 fatal accidents for which the Mine Safety and Health Administration has published fatality investigation reports was conducted to determine whether the accident may have been prevented by conventional or intelligent proximity. Multiple zone configurations for the intelligent systems were studied to determine how system performance might be affected by the zone configuration. Researchers found that 32 of the 39 fatalities, or 82 percent, may have been prevented by both conventional and intelligent proximity systems. These results indicate that, by properly configuring the zones of an intelligent proximity detection system, equivalent protection to a conventional system is possible.

The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

"Over recent years, specifically following the MINER Act of 2006, an increasing number of manufacturers of underground mine seals in the United States have begun using a form of pumpable cement or shotcrete to create barriers separating the working and abandoned sections of underground coal mines. This seal material, while generally considered to be homogenous and solid, contains a network of microcracks, voids, and delaminations. Generally, it has been assumed that methane (CF4) leakage around these seals is a result of movement around the boundary interface between the seal and surrounding strata. Using a perfluorinated tracer compound, perfluoromethyl-cyclohexane (PMCH), the movement of gases can be monitored through seal material to observe how gases move though the material, both intact and with faulting in the material. This paper documents two large experiments where the movement of PMCH was monitored in the field, along with modeling confirmation using 3D visualization software. INTRODUCTION According to a report in 2007, there were over 14,000 active mine seals in underground U.S. coal mines alone (Zipf, Sapko, & Brune, 2007). These seals are used for both ventilation and safety purposes, to direct the flow of air away from the abandoned area of the mine and to help eliminate the propagation of explosions that can occur on the outby side of the mine seal. The atmosphere on the outby side of these seals typical consists of low levels of methane that have the potential of producing leakage along the face of the seal on the inby side. Methane leakage around mine seals has historically been attributed to the permeability between the seal and mine interface (McPherson, 1993). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) between 2003 and 2012 an average of 17 deaths occurred annually in underground bituminous coals mines. The only time during the ten-year period where the fatalities were higher than the average was in 2006 and 2010, years which had three major explosions occurring in underground coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. Two of the explosions were propagated through the mine by seal failure or methane leakage around newly poured seals (Light, et al., 2007) (Gates, et al., 2006). These recent events, and new regulations regarding seal strength (MINER Act), have created a need to monitor the condition of underground mine seals. BACKGROUND Measuring the permeability of solid materials, such as concrete or seal materials, can be a valuable tool in the field of non-destructible testing (NDT). By using an inert gas, such as nitrogen, injecting the gas into a solid structure, and measuring the resultant flow rate and pressure differential, this can provide valuable information about the structure. Studies have shown permeability can be affected by the stresses applied to the structure, as well as temperature and moisture (Choinska, Khelidj, Chatzigeorgious, & Pijaudier-Cabot, 2007) (Abbas, Carcasses, & Olliver, 1999)."

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to examine and improve airborne dust capture and methane removal performance of flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous mining machines using a blowing face ventilation configuration to reduce respirable dust exposure to shuttle car operators. Several testing conditions were examined to minimize shuttle car operator dust exposure without adversely affecting continuous miner performance and production. Curtain-to-face setback distance of 9.1 m versus 15.2 m (30 ft versus 50 ft), face ventilation airflow of 226.5 m3/min versus 339.8 m3/min (8,000 ft3/min versus 12,000 ft3/min), and the use of side-body-mounted blocking sprays (on versus off) were the three primary parameters compared. Scrubber airflow was set and maintained at 198.2 m3/min (7,000 ft3/min) throughout testing. An examination of slab cuts versus box cuts and the location of the shuttle car (present behind the continuous miner versus not present in the entry) was also performed to demonstrate the effects of these constantly changing scenarios on scrubber performance. Results show that the best blowing face ventilation setup for minimizing shuttle car operator dust exposure for the tested parameters uses a 15.2-m (50-ft) curtain-to-face setback with 339.8 m3/min (12,000 ft3/min) face ventilation while operating the side-body-mounted blocking sprays. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in U.S. underground coal mining operations, potentially leading to coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (black lung). The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that respirable dust exposure to coal mine workers does not exceed a 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (79 Fed. Reg. 24814 (2014)). Although using a blowing face ventilation configuration on continuous miner (CM) sections is beneficial for removing methane emissions from the mining face, it can be detrimental for dust control for shuttle car (or ram car) operators and any other workers on the return ventilation side of the CM when compared to exhausting ventilation. Even with machine-mounted scrubbers on CMs, shuttle car operators still have some of the higher dust exposures with blowing face ventilation systems (NIOSH 2011, Beck et al. 2015). Although scrubber discharge air is not completely clean, dust being blown around the scrubber inlet and therefore not being captured by the scrubber can further increase these dust exposures (Goodman 2000). Dust control problems are also caused by inadequate face ventilation quantities causing scrubber face airflow recirculation issues (Schultz et al. 2010). In order to minimize respirable dust exposures on blowing face ventilation sections, ventilation, water spray, and scrubber parameters were experimentally examined to improve operating ranges for both dust and gas control. Several blowing face ventilation factors were examined with respect to CM spray systems and scrubber operation. Curtain-to-face setback distance and side-body-mounted blocking sprays were previously examined in the laboratory for dust control on a full-scale CM model using a scrubber on a blowing face ventilation system (Goodman 2000). The blocking sprays produced larger dust reductions at the CM’s rear corners and return for a 6.1-m (20-ft) curtain setback distance as compared to a 12.2-m (40-ft) curtain setback distance with equal face and scrubber airflows of 169.9 m3/min (6,000 ft3/min). Because face ventilation airflow quantities, shuttle car operator locations, and tracer gas concentration gradients were not previously examined during these experiments, additional research was required to determine improved operating parameters for blowing face ventilation systems.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. Newmont Gold Company began full production in early 1995 at the Carlin East underground mine. The mine is currently producing at the rate of 900 tpd (1.000 stpd). for an annual production of 150.000 ounces. Approximately one hundred twenty five hourly and salary personnel are employed at the project for the estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently utilized at the mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased a new AC-Eickhoff ET-210 Roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June of 1997 and is used in both longhole stope topcut development and cut and fill production at a rate of 225 tpd (250 stpd). The Carlin East mine is operated by Newmont Gold Company. The mine is one of four underground gold mines in production in northeastern Nevada owned by Newmont Gold.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

Almost all modern cutting bits use a cemented tungsten carbide tip to provide adequate hit life against wear. Laboratory tests by the US Bureau of Mines have indicated that the number of strikes for ignition increased by a factor of three with a new non-rotating bit impacting a sandstone block when the clearance angle was increased by 10°, and that carbide-tipped bits allowed more strikes before ignition than steel-tipped bits by a factor of 7 to 10. Recent field tests in an operating coal mine indicate a dramatic reduction in the frequency of frictional ignitions and improvement in hit life by using a mushroom-shaped hit cap and a larger initial clearance angle. The latter was achieved by increasing the hit attack angle. Improved hit performance through selection of the grade of tungsten-carbide is a com¬promise between fracture resistance and wear resistance. A large clearance angle should he maintained by various techniques, such as a variable attack angle holder, or a reusable hit that can he reground.

The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.
