In April 1975 Kaiser Steel Corporation and the United States' Department of Energy entered into a cost-sharing agreement for the demonstration of shield-type longwall supports on three consecutive longwall panels at Kaiser's York Canyon' Mine in New Mexico. Under this agreement the Department of Energy supplied 117 Hemscheidt 320 HSL caliper-type shield supports and hydraulic pumps for the duration of the demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration was to educate the U.S. coal mining industry as to the benefits in production, productivity, health and safety, and increased coal extraction afforded by shield-type longwall mining systems and to provide the industry with a working model. A detailed description of this demonstration is given in U.S. Department of Energy Publication No. DOE/ET/12530-T1, entitled "Demonstration of Shield-Type Longwall Supports at York Canyon Mine of Kaiser Steel Corporation," hereafter referred to as the York Canyon Report.

We evaluate the exploration effort by diamond drilling for zinc in central Tennessee and southern Kentucky through a statistical analysis comparing the Middle Tennessee district with the older Tri-State and Upper Mississippi Valley districts. All of the ore deposits are of the Mississippi Valley type and are similar geologically. Through statistical analyses we attempt to answer these questions: Had the drilling density in the Middle Tennessee district been applied to the Tri-State district, how much of the ore in the Tri-State would have been discovered? Had this drilling been done in the Upper Mississippi Valley district, how much of the ore in that district would have been found? Which of these two older districts does Middle Tennessee more closely resemble in intensity of zinc mineralization? Is more drilling warranted in the Middle Tennessee district? Our data base includes tonnage and area distributions of ore deposits in the Tri-State dis¬trict, sizes of ore bodies and probabilities of their recognition in the three districts, and data for the Elmwood mine in the Middle Tennessee district. Our statistical analysis considers the consequences of drilling holes in the three districts on square grids at coarse, intermediate, and fine spacings. We conclude that the drilling pattern assumed for Middle Tennessee would have found some but not all of the ore in the two older districts. We believe that in intensity of mineralization Middle Tennessee more closely resembles the Tri-State than the Upper Mississippi Valley district, and that more drilling is warranted in the Middle Tennessee district.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and AMAX Coal Company have studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipe-line of 15 to 5l-cm diameter, monitoring vibration, strain, and pressure. Unlike tests simulating construction blasting, these were up to 1000 kg per delay in 3l-cm blastholes. Worst case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/s blasting vibrations produced strains about 1/4 that of pressurization and 10-18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m which produced vibrations over 60 cm/s.

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)

Bench top centrifuge is used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on first order kinetics) is developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. Permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The obtained data are compared with that obtained by other consolidation testing methods. Centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. D-LM at Mobile The qualified success of iron ore pelletizing processes has influenced considerations for production of highly beneficiated fur¬nace charges. Such beneficiation would necessarily involve some forms of chemical and perhaps thermal conversion for production of prereduced pellets, preheated pellets, precalcined pellets, and perhaps pellets which contain all of the above features as preheated, prereduced, precalcined products. This type of furnace burden will be adapted within a new ironmaking process to be activated commer¬cially during the latter part of 196$ in Mobile, Alabama. This process will integrate a new pelletizing system with an electric smelting furnace and the pellets will be comprised of a composite charge blended from metallurgical proportions of iron ore, coal, and limestone. Martin County Coal Corporation is located in Martin County, Kentucky in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The total leasehold covers more than 33 000 acres. Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corporation is currently 2,500,000 tons, but in certain years exceeded 3,000,000 tons. Approximately 45 percent of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal Corporation's work schedule consists of 240 days/year, two nine-hours shifts/day.

In modern industry, cost and productivity concerns and environmental concerns are sometimes incompatible, but at other times only appear to be incompatible. Surface disposal of wastes from coal preparation plants appears to be an area of the production system with little opportunity for initiating measures which cut costs and concurrently benefit the environment. However, improving the recovery efficiency of fine coal circuitry can cost-effectively reduce the plant waste environmental burden by a substantial amount. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicate that fine-coal waste measuring 50% ash contains over 50% recoverable, marketable coal. Modifications to the plant circuitry which reduce the amount of misplaced coal in the fine-coal waste stream could substantially reduce the volume of fine waste disposed aboveground. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicated that episodic overloads of the vacuum filters in the fine-coal circuits at the preparation plants were a source of misplaced coal in the fine-waste stream of the cleaning plants. To improve the filtration rate and reduce overload episodes, conventional rotary blowers were replaced with high pressure air blasters on most of the filters. Subsequent testing indicated that measurable benefits can be derived from this modification.

Processing bauxite and clay ores to reduce Iron content to levels low enough for the ores to be suitable raw materials for such products as refractories and abrasives has long been regarded as a diffi9ult problem. Standard magnetic separation processing of the untreated ore has been attempted by previous investigators with only limited success due to the finely divided state and weak magnetic susceptibility of the iron minerals (hematite, geothite, etc.) present in these ores. The new process described in this paper consists of calcining the finely crushed ore at 500 to 800 C and then reducing (with hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc.) the iron oxides present to magnetite or elemental Iron. The magnetic susceptibility of iron in these forms is enhanced 40-to 100-fold over that of hematitie and is readily removed by simple magnetic separation. Starting with a 2.7% Fe20s Alabama bauxite ore, a 1.5% Fe20s product was produced in one pass through a Davis tube magnetic separator with 95 + % recovery of the iron-free bauxite fraction and a 20% Fe20a magnetic product. These findings suggest that with the addition of light calcination, reduction and magnetic separation steps to the conventional refractory grain production process, the large U.S. reserves of high-iron bauxites could be used.

The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NY. The site was primarily used by the Department of Energy for the field testing of nuclear weapons and contaminated by several million cubic feet of low-level radioactive wastes, heavy metals, volatile and non-volatile organics, and explosive materials. Leaching and transportation of these contaminants are creating severe environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to examine pozzolan, a natural alumina-silicate mineral, as a possible replacement of the existing impermeable barriers (clays). In the first phase of this study, radionuclide sorption characteristics of pozzolan were investigated. This paper will present the results of the sorption tests for the target radionuclides.

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

Despite the seeming benefits decoupling pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals present in practice, little success has been achieved. The present study presents possible process routes for attaining selective flotation broadly capitalizing on differential oxidation between these minerals, and the use of a chelating collectors. The best performance was achieved with dithionocarbamate application following copper activation, yielding 81.4% arsenopyrite and 37% pyrite recovery. Preaeration followed by staged addition of xanthate produced 76% arsenopyrite and 31% pyrite recovery while reverse flotation of pyrite after H2O2 addition gave rise to rejection of 66% pyrite accompanied with 24% arsenopyrite.

"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

Modified contact grouting was introduced almost 15 years ago as a methodology combining traditional contact grouting and consolidation grouting to address groundwater infiltration into hard rock tunnels that utilize cast-in-place concrete as permanent tunnel support. This process has been used on additional tunnels (since initially presented) as a measure to mitigate both groundwater infiltration and exfiltration. During this time, self-sealing grouts have been developed and have been added to the process to further reduce groundwater infiltration that occurs through cracks and discontinuities within the concrete liner itself. This modification is presented and additional results from the grouting process are discussed.

Ion exchange technology is becoming more prevalent for metal recovery from low concentration solutions. The products of ion exchange are typically a metal free stream (product stream) and a concentrated metal stream (byproduct). The metals in the concentrate stream are usually precipitated and returned to the process or discarded. The unique features of emew® technology enable metals to be recovered directly from the concentrated stream. The advantage of the IX-emew® combination is the ability to have two product streams: 1) clean metal free solution and 2) metal product for sale. In addition to recovering metals from solution, it is also possible to separate metals from each other and recover more than one metal product. In this paper, examples of IX-emew® combinations are detailed including the recovery of copper, nickel and cobalt from an industrial waste stream, recovery of nickel from a spent electroless nickel plating solution and recovery of cobalt from an hydroxide cake.

Tests were conducted to assess the potential of column flotation for beneficiation of a talc ore from Montana. This ere contained approximately 80% talc, with the gangue comprised mainly of chlorite, silica, and dolomite. A tributylamine, MIBC, and sodium silicate reagent suite proved effective for talc flotation. Rougher-cleaner column flotation in a continuous open-circuit produced a final talc concentrate which contained 0.90% Al2O3. 0.17% CaO, and 1.28% Fe2O3. These analyses represented impurity rejections of 77, 85, and 65%, respectively. Weight recovery for this open-circuit was 52%; however, weight recovery was estimated to be 75% with cleaner tailings recycle. Results from this investigation show that column flotation is a viable means for beneficiating talc.

Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) software, released in 2018, integrates numerous empirical pillar design techniques. The ACPS program incorporates methodologies originally available as design tools from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), including Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), and concepts including Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the Mark-Bieniawski pillar formula, and pressure arch loading. The design methodologies that are the basis of ACPS were developed via analysis of significant amounts of real-world data and have been standards of the United States coal industry for decades. While there are empirical factors built into ACPS, making it ideal for use in U.S. coalfields, the concepts in the program have proven to be applicable in variable mine settings, and the software was developed to allow for user-based, site-specific modifications of key design inputs. Application of ACPS to cases outside the regions for which it was developed must be approached carefully, and continuous development of site-specific data is mandatory. A case study is presented involving the application of ACPS to assess pillar stability and assist future design for an underground lignite mine in Eastern Europe. Assessment of in-mine observations, review of the geology of the lignite mine, and evaluation of specific conditions associated with a failure event resulted in “calibration” of key input factors to ACPS. Scenarios evaluated with ACPS suggest that pillar strength and overburden depth are key factors for the determination of pillar stability and design in future areas.
