The Telfer Project, Australia's newest, largest and most remote gold mine, treats 480,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 9.33 grams per tonne derived from open pit mining operations. Coarse gold is recovered by gravity concentration with jigs and further upgraded using a continuous strake, table and by amalgamation. Remaining gold is recovered in a cyanide circuit and incorporates flat bottom air agitators, CCD and stellar filters for clarification and precipitate removal. Overall recovery into bullion averages 98 percent. The mill incorporates a number of design features which allow for maximum efficiency and security using a minimum number of operating personnel.

The bed filtration of colloidal particles has been modeled by performing a differential particle balance. The balance considered the localized particle deposition rate to be the sum of three rate resistances: 1) mass transfer to a region near the surface; 2) adhesion onto a partially filled surface; and 3) resuspension from a partially filled surface. The differential particle balance equations, one for the free particles and one for the adhered particles, were solved by a finite difference algorithm. The results of this model are compared to experimental filter breakthrough curves.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. "Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. The distribution of material passing a screen, or a set of screens, is described by the equation [ ] where p = the probability that a single particle will pass the screen on a single presentation k = number of layers of screen cloth n = distance from head of screen expressed as number of screen openings. This model can be used to predict the performance of conventional screening operations (i.e., k = 1) as well as the so-called "statistical screening" operations. Using this technique, in which multiple identical layers of screen cloth are employed, screening can be carried out at a finer size than is possible with conventional techniques with no loss of separation efficiency.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of pillar failure in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The conclusions are based on in-mine observations and analysis of mining methods, eyewitness account of the sequence of events, topographic and geologic conditions, and mechanical properties of mine roof, coal, and floor. The study indicated that massive pillar failure was caused by the collapse of the mine roof. The collapse of the mine roof was due to the combined effects of high lateral compressive stress and high extraction ratio causing excessive bending of the roof beyond its limit. It was assumed that the higher lateral compressive stress under such a shallow cover was probably due to the drastic change in the structural geology of the area and possible residual stresses. Eased on the analytical study it was concluded that the sudden release of elastic energy (shock) due to the rupture of the roof caused the squeezing of approximately eighty mine pillars.

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950&apos;s by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company&apos;s intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance. No further action was taken until 1956 when additional drill holes confirmed beyond reasonable-doubt-that this was a major iron ore discovery.

The Federal Coal Management Program represents the culmination of several years of effort by the Department of the Interior (001) to reformulate the manner in which coal owned by the United States is leased and developed. These efforts began in 1970 with a study by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which indicated that unless drastic changes were made in. the federal coal leasing procedures, federal coal lands would be leased almost for the asking while production of coal from those lands had been decreasing. Consequently, informal action was taken in 1971, which resulted in no further leasing being authorized until February, 1973. At that time, a formal moratorium on most coal leasing was established, with exceptions granted only for leases needed to satisfy short-term needs such as maintaining existing mines or supplying reserves for new contracts in the immediate future. This leasing policy embodied a long term objective of developing an entirely new planning system for federal coal leasing, as well as to schedule the preparation of a programmatic impact statement for this new system. As a result of the 1973 moratorium and the ensuing application of short-term criteria, only 10 federal coal leases (covering approximately 30,177 acres) were issued from February, 1973, through January l, 1976.

In an exchange of views with the Program Chairman for the Technical Session on Industrial Minerals and Investment in Foreign Countries, it was agreed that it would be more interesting to approach the problem of mineral investment in foreign countries in a more general framework and not confine it to industrial minerals. Therefore, this Bureau of Mines report is proposed to examine current attitudes toward investments in foreign mineral resources and restraints that they impose on investments necessary to assure supply for future global mineral needs.

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. Otras disposiciones de las unidades arrojaron resultados mixtos. Existen planes para examinar más los fenómenos observados en esta mina.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand fir the material as well as accurate projections of costs and prices. This paper develops a general method of predicting mineral requirements and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can he projected to establish future requirements. This forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of Upper Michigan.

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple metric that can be used to measure and increase ball milling circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target (oversize) particles. This paper describes CSE analysis conducted for a variety of operations with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The achievable CSE for any given ball milling circuit is described, providing the means to determine the extent to which every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.

Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

Acid mine drainage is a serious water pollution problem, for its contaminants will eventually effect the quality of the receiving streams. According to the Appalachian Regional Commission (1969)1, 10, 500 miles of streams have been polluted by mine drainage, and 70 percent of this acid pollution is accounted for by underground mines. Due to the severe damage to aquatic life, to recreational and industrial use, and to domestic water supply, more stringent mining and anti-pollution laws have been legislated and coal mine operators are required to treat the mine water discharges to meet the minimum standards. For years now, abatement and treatment methods have been extensively studied. Progress reports presented in the Fourth Symposium on Coal Mine Drainage Research, 1972 1 suggest that a thorough investigation and understanding of the basin discharge is necessary in order to cope with the mine drainage problem. The extent of mine water discharge contamination can be considered as a function of the basin streamflow and acid generation load.&apos; A conservative treatment cost estimation these days is $0.40 per 1, 000 gallons for water with 100 ppm iron, 500 ppm acidity. These figures need not include collection and pumping costs nor the cost of dispersing of chemical waste by-products. To achieve optimal abatement and treatment of mine drainage, predictions of the quantity and quality of mine water discharges are needed. Basin discharge is a continuous process and it can be considered as a. macro-system. This system can be subdivided into micro-systems to describe the various mine discharge .types in the basin. The mining activities could produce acid water discharges from deep mines, stripmines, or associated gob piles. A total study entitled ?Resource Allocation to Optimize Mining Pollution Abatement Programs?* will consider all of these sources. However, this paper will discuss only one micro-system, the drift (deep) mine type. We will look at a single mine and its watershed. The total research project considers a multiple mining complex in an extensive stream basin.

Martin County Coal Corporation&apos;s operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company&apos;s Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.
