The competitive market potential for solvent refined coal is estimated. Market advantages of solvent refined coal are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking the solvent refining of coal.

Ore agglomeration has been used as part of the heap leaching process for the last 40 years. However, industrial experience shows that the lack of a universal agglomeration standard has limited the benefits of this, otherwise, valuable unit process. The more complex the ore, in terms of the nature and relative abundance of fines (<74 μm), the more important that the agglomeration product satisfies some minimal requirements. This paper presents an agglomeration scale that identifies the quality standards for agglomerates and documents the resulting mechanical, physical, and hydraulic (hydrodynamic) behavior associated with each level on the agglomeration scale. The hydrodynamic properties of an agglomeration product are critical for the proper design of a leaching operation and, as shown in this paper, can be used to select the optimal pretreatment method for a given ore sample. Agglomeration as a unit process not only allows better conditioning of the hydrodynamic behavior of the ore but also creates an opportunity for optimized delivery of reagents to kick-start the leaching process which may ultimately improve the economic performance of leaching. Industrial case data is used to demonstrate the shortfalls associated with low-quality agglomeration and the benefits of improved agglomeration which range from enhanced porous structure (better percolation and drainage characteristics) to better metallurgical response (faster kinetics and higher metal recovery). Proper agglomeration has been used to render otherwise untreatable ores into valuable leaching resources.

The potential of the coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints which have tended to limit the development of these reserves which can only be deep-mined are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short- term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment which were not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment that are in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses the various ground control and safety considerations that are unique to thick-seam extraction.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5&apos;h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company&apos;s goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company&apos;s goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. Vibrations from thirty-seven blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations reported in the U.S. Bureau of Mines studies. Regulations based on USBM data could then be too conservative or lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

The trend towards proportionately rising volumes of surface mining through- out the world and especially in the United States has led some observers to predict that the future of underground mining is quite limited. Certainly, the simple extrapolation of current trends1 gives evidence of a compelling sort for the hypothesis that technological progress is proceeding at a faster pace in surface than in underground mining. This paper attempts to examine the basis for these predictions by searching the historical record on differential rates of productivity as these are observed in iron ore and coal mining. In recent years economists have discussed "technology gaps" among industries or segments of the same industry, by which they mean that mechanisms for invention and its diffusion are faulty or retarded in such a way that feasible cost-cutting innovations are not applied or developed, even though technicians regard them as practical.2

Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

The main industrial minerals produced are non-metallic - clay, dolomite, limestone, pumice, salt, serpentine, and silica sand. The other minerals, some with minor production, include diatomite, feldspar, magnesite, sulphur, asbestos, and perlite. Energy and metallic minerals and aggregate are excluded from this account. These industrial minerals occur in a wide range of rock types and geological ages. For example clays are known from the weathering products of Cretaceous rhyolite and leaching of Eocene coal measures; from Quaternary weathering of contemporary loess and shallow marine sediments, and of greywacke of Triassic-Jurassic age; and from the hydrothermal alteration of Late Cenozoic acidic volcanic rocks.

The presence of discontinuities strongly affects the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rock masses. Joint geometry networks play a vital role in civil, mining, and petroleum engineering projects associated with jointed rock. The need for a realistic representation of joint geometry in rock masses has been recognized. The first part of the paper shows how to build three-dimensional stochastic joint network schemes and also shows how to perform validation studies for these schemes using joint data from the Stripa mine, Sweden. Due to the existence of complex joint patterns, mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses usually exhibit scale effects and an-isotropic properties. A correct understanding of the mechanical properties (strength and deformability) of jointed rock masses is important for designing and performance estimation of structures build in and on rock masses. Beyond a certain volume, the mass proper-ties of the rock may remain essentially constant with respect to the effect of joints. This minimum volume may be used as the element size to represent the equivalent properties of a statistically homogeneous rock mass volume which contains a significant number of joints. This volume may be termed as a "Representative Elementary Volume" (REV) and may be of great importance for engineering purposes. Investigations are underway at both the 2D and 3D levels to look into the possibility of establishing relationships between REV mechanical properties and joint geometry parameters. Recently developed joint geometry modeling schemes are linked with existing distinct element codes (both 2D and 3D) to create a stochastic/deterministic stress analysis approach in achieving the goal. Results obtained so far in this direction are presented in the second part of the paper.

The current situation of the global mining economy is increasingly focused on the utilization of materials previously discarded in the mining process. The waste from the past, through new processing routes, is gaining new contours for use as high-value-added products. The strategic mine planning process has consequently had to adapt to the new economic reality. In standard scenarios, the focus was primarily on mine sequencing aimed at the highest economic return, with all infrastructure allocated as a necessity of mining. This work aims, in strategic planning, to configure and select the best composition of mining structures. The entire Mine-Plant-Waste-Tailings-Products chain will be considered as a factor in the sequencing of a multimine complex, to achieve the most sustainable utilization of the current mines’ waste. The sequencing is based on concurrent flows of process configurations and capacities, structure sharing, and flexibility of feed types. These factors will guide the sequencing, which will be constrained by components such as waste and tailings disposal rates, lithology feed relationships, and especially product composition through market specifications, all while respecting product shipping capacities.

The reduction roast-ammonium carbonate leach-hydrogen reduction process for laterites has been under development by Sherritt Gordon for the past 20 years. The process can treat high iron or low iron laterites, with some process modification, and gives extractions of 88-93% Ni or 82-88% Ni, respectively. Five campaigns on a 1 tonne per day Pilot Plant and four campaigns on a 35 t/d Demonstration Plant have been carried out on laterite from three different deposits, and many other laterites have been investigated in the laboratory. The Marinduque Surigao Nickel Refinery in the Philippines was designed on the basis of this work. The process comprises roasting to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt in the laterite, leaching the calcine in ammonium carbonate to dissolve the metals, recovery of cobalt by precipitation of a mixed metal sulphide, concentration of nickel from the carbonate solution by basic nickel carbonate precipitation and recovery of high purity nickel by hydrogen reduction of nickel from ammonium sulphate solution. Ion exchange has been developed as an alternative to BNC and for recovery of trace nickel from BNC barren liquor. Details of the development of some of the process steps through the laboratory to commercial plant are discussed. The process metallurgy has been confirmed in the commercial plant.

Natural materials can be used successfully in the construction of heap leach pads. The use of these materials usually result in the least expensive approach for such facilities. Sufficient geotechnical experience has been gained in the design and construction of clay heap leach pads so that they can be used with confidence. A number of operators presently use clay pads in their heap leach facilities; these include Alligator Ridge, Ely, Nevada (gold), and Union Carbide, Gas Hills, Wyoming (uranium). This paper describes the construction and field investigation of a clay pad for the heap leaching of agglomerated precious tailings. The project is located in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The design had to satisfy operational requirements as well as regulatory requirements. The California Water Quality Control Board (WQCB) was one of the agencies which had to issue a permit for the project. Their biggest concern was the discharge or escape of cyanide into the environment. Rather stringent requirements were therefore placed on the pad design criteria, especially in terms of permeability.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

While there have always been mining activities on the outcrops of the copper deposits around Tsumeb, large scale mining activities in Namibia only started in colonial times. Originally focusing on the known deposits, the then German Geological Survey and independent geologists soon discovered significant deposits all over the country. This eventually lead to intensive mining operations all over the country on copper, gold, diamonds, fluorspar and finally uranium. Ever since those days, mining has been one of the major economical factors of Namibia?s development, as shown in picture 1. In the Central Namib Desert mining on base metals started in 1901, and first uranium deposits were discovered as soon as 1910, later followed by others, this did, however, not lead to any mining activities on those uranium deposits in the following decades. [ ] The upswing in the use of nuclear energy in the 1960s and early 1970s triggered some extensive uranium exploration worldwide and also in Namibia. Several airborne radiometric overviews were conducted by the Geological Survey at this stage and eventually the first uranium mine was commissioned in 1976. In the following three decades, the focus of prospecting activities in Namibia shifted away from uranium again. However, since 2000 the forecast for a developing and growing global economy and its even stronger growing energy demand have triggered a large number of nuclear energy projects worldwide, thus increasing the installed nuclear energy generation capacity from 387 GW today to more than 490 GW in 2025.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world&apos;s aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world&apos;s commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted&apos;s discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville&apos;s method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer&apos;s work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today&apos;s aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:&apos; building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth&apos;s crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

The objectives of this paper are: to review the current status of chloride leach processes for sulfide concentrates, to make an evaluation as to the applicability of chloride leaching for replacing pyrometallurgical processes and to comment on recent advances in construction materials. The paper does not delve in detail on process chemistry. Sufficient references are presented on each process to allow the interested researcher to obtain process chemistry details. GENERAL The fact that chloride oxidates can solubilize base metals from sulfide concentrates has been known since the 1880&apos;s. The work of Hoepfner in 1902 was particularly accurate for its time with regard to the chemistry of chloride solutions. Recent work has dealt with the understanding of chloride extraction thermodynamics by modelling the behavior of metal chloride complexes. In the last several years several excellent review articles and symposiums have been issued covering chloride chemistry (1 thru 6).
