A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

During the past few years, the first stage of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP) which consists of an exploratory shaft, a ventilation shaft, shaft stations, access drifts and test rooms, has been under construction. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1983. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is constructing the WIPP facility to demonstrate the feasibility of disposing of defense-related nuclear waste in the bedded salt deposits of the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad, N.M. The project promises to be a proving ground for underground nuclear waste storage facility design and construction. The completed underground plant will extend over an area of 647,500 m2 (160 acres), and 1,360,500 metric tons (1,500,000 tons) of salt will be excavated. The first stage of the project, the Site and Preliminary Design Validation (SPDV) Program, provides for full-scale construction of the major components of the underground facility. Shaft construction and underground development are described. Rock bolt installation is performed as required for roof control. Geotechnical instrumentation is installed to monitor the behavior of underground openings. Direct observation of the constructed shafts, shaft stations, and underground openings is expected to confirm the adequacy of the underground design and allow full-scale construction of the first U.S. underground nuclear waste storage facility to proceed.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, has been conducting and documenting rock mechanics research in the Coeur d’Alene mining district for the past ten years (1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 15). A current project combines the information gathered from rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic structure, and analytic techniques to improve shaft and support design for the deep mines of the district (3). This project required knowledge of the anticipated loads and the physical properties of the rock mass to provide accurate input data for computer design models. Several techniques have been utilized to determine the physical parameters including the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) solid inclusion probe, the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) biaxial and triaxial strain cells, and the CSM (Colorado School of Mines) dilatometer. This paper describes the determination of the in situ modulus of deformation in three mines over a period of three years and the evaluation of these results as they applied to this project. The need for in-situ rock mass properties such as the modulus of deformation has stimulated research and development of a large number of instrumentation techniques. One area of continuing interest involves various methods of radial borehole dilation. This concept was pursued by Menard (9) with an apparatus known as the pressure meter, which is used frequently in soil mechanics. Other developments in rock mechanics include the CPC (cylindrical pressure cell) by Panek (11) and the dilatometer by Rocha et.al. (13) in Portugal. The CSM dilatometer, which also utilizes this technique, was chosen for this project because it required a small amount of background study, was inexpensive, and could easily be combined with other experiments being planned for the test locations. Although no previous field applications to hard rock (compressive strengths greater than 20,000 psi) has been documented, the instrument was selected since good results have been achieved in granite, oil shale, and several coal measure rocks (11, 12).

Mineral liberation is one of the primary objectives in comminution circuits for the downstream separation of valuable minerals. Breaking minerals through their grain boundaries (grain-boundary breakage) enables mineral liberation in their natural grain size, removing the need for intensive grinding. This study aimed to evaluate if gaseous carbon dioxide, oxygen, or hydrogen can be used as grinding additives to promote the liberation of chromite grains by grain-boundary breakage. For this purpose, chromite ore particles in the −9.53 + 6.35 mm size fraction were pretreated by exposing them to carbon dioxide, oxygen, or hydrogen flow. Then, the untreated and pretreated samples were broken in a drop-weight tester under the same conditions. Finally, the graderecovery plots of chromite grains in the selected progeny size fractions and the overall progeny distributions were measured and compared. Pretreatment with carbon dioxide flow was found beneficial for grain-boundary breakage. It significantly enhanced the liberation of coarse chromite grains along with the overall progeny fineness. EPMAanalysis showed that the adsorption of carbon dioxide seems to reduce aluminum concentration at grain boundaries, which could be the reason for grain-boundary weakening. These results suggest that carbon dioxide can be used as a grinding additive, reducing the carbon footprint of the mining industry.

This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.

Respirable dust poses long-term health issues to personnel working in mining and civil projects where mechanized mining and tunneling machines are used for hard rock excavation. Machines, such as longwall shearers, roadheaders, or continuous miners, use consumable picks to cut rock. However, rock dust is generated in the work environment each time the pick tip contacts the rock surface. Additionally, the generated dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production, such as at transfer points. The purpose of this study is to characterize respirable dust particles generated at the pick tip at two stages of pick wear: new and moderately worn. Understanding dust characteristics in terms of concentration, size distribution, and particle shape throughout the life-cycle of the pick will provide a basis to mine and tunnel operators for changing out picks to mitigate dust generation at the source. This paper discusses the dust characteristics generated from preliminary full-scale cutting tests in a laboratory of an igneous rock block cut with conical picks at new and moderately worn levels of wear. The moderately worn pick generated a size distribution that favored smaller particle sizes compared to the new pick. The moderately worn pick also generated more overall dust, as the concentration level in mg/m3 was over double the amount of the new pick. Lastly, both picks generated particles that had similar aspect ratios and roundness measures.

The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

This paper shows how one can relate the chemical reactions between water and a silicate bed to the equations of flow. First the reaction mechanism is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Once the reaction mechanism is established, the equations of flow are solved and a solution (under physically reasonable side conditions) is obtained. Experiments to substantiate the solution are also presented.

Similar to modern day petro-chemical processes, the flotation column is a complete break from the conventional manner of floating on a batch basis in cells. The column has a reputation of being only suited for cleaning applications, particularly that of molybdenum cleaning. The original column, invented and developed by Column Flotation Co. of Canada, Ltd., was developed as a Rougher-Scavenger. Only after proving its capability in this field was cleaning allowed. One rougher-scavenger column in closed circuit with a cleaner column produced better grade and recovery than a conventional cell plant consisting of one stage of roughing, two scavenging and four stages of cell cleaning. Three cleaner columns replaced 13 stages of conventional cell cleaning and resulted in higher grades and recoveries. The gentle countercurrent action of the column itself together with complete automatic control enable this machine to produce such results.

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. Fuller's earth and bentonite are two clay commodities that are interrelated either by mineral composition or use. Because of this interrelation and the sale of both for many different uses, some ambiguity in their classification has resulted. The term "fuller's earth" has no compositional or mineralogical meaning, and it is used more or less as a catchall for any clay or earthy material suitable for certain uses. Most, but not all, of these uses require absorbent properties. Bentonite by geologic definition must have formed from volcanic ash or tuff or the glassy material in volcanic rock; most bentonites consist chiefly of montmorillonite but other clay minerals may be present. In industrial usage the term "bentonite" is applied to any clay consisting chiefly of montmorillonite, irrespective of origin. Georgia and Florida have historically been the leading States in the production of fuller's earth; bentonite has been produced in Alabama on a small scale. The first major use of fuller's earth was in refining of oils. Other materials have replaced fuller's earth for this purpose to a major extent, but many new uses for fuller's earth have been found, and production has increased in recent years. The new uses include absorbent products, insecticide and pesticide carriers, drilling mud, and many others. The bentonite now produced in Alabama is of the "southern," "low selling," or "calcium" type and is used mainly as foundry-sand bond. Most of the fuller's earth mined now is in the Hawthorn Formation of Miocene age; a lesser amount is produced from the Twiggs Clay Member and other beds in the Barnwell Formation of Eocene age. Inactive pits from which fuller's-earth was produced from other formations occur at several localities. The bentonite now mined in Alabama is in beds of Cretaceous age; several years ago bentonite was produced from Eocene beds in this State.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area.
