Studies of sedimentary humic acids by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), stable isotopes, and elemental analysis show they are derived by oxidative degradation of complex plant macromolecules that are insoluble in aqueous or organic solvents. The mechanism by which humic acids originate is fundamental to our understanding of the role of organic matter in ore deposition, because these substances can complex and mobilize a number of metal ions. The organic matter associated with uranium ores of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico and Carlin-type disseminated gold deposits of Nevada has certain organic geochemical characteristics that suggest an origin from humic acids.

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Inflation and burgeoning costs are two among many factors which have generated a new surge of interest in "fringe benefits" (sometimes referred to as "supplementary remuneration" or "supplementary compensation"). Other specialized forms of compensation ("perks", in the vernacular) such as company cars, windowed offices, etc., which also are the subjects of current study, are outside the scope of this paper. For businesses, interest in fringe benefits is based on concern for employees? welfare, compliance with government requirements, and an increasingly burdensome impact on bottom lines. In 1980, according to Fred D. Lindsey in the October 1980 issue of Nation's Business, employee benefits will cost American employers an estimated $420 billion. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "some fringes!" Indeed, few if any administrators consider employee benefits as fringes. Employee benefits impact other major areas of a company's operations as well. As listed by Beadle (1980), these areas include employee relations, collective bargaining, short-term costs, long-range funding, manpower planning, compliance with legislation, taxation for the company and for the employee, corporate image in the community, competitiveness for staff, communications, administration, claims cost containment, etc., etc.

Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). This paper presents the results of a parametric study of the influence of natural features (stress field, rock strength, and strength and orientation of fractures) as well as the influence of induced features (undercut span, boundary slot, and other boundary-weakening measures) on the cavability of an undercut block of ore in mining by the block-caving method. The two-dimensional finite element analysis technique was used for this study. A coarse "mesh," along with linear homogeneous assumptions for rock properties, was used to model the problem of initiation of caving in a block of ore. Interpretation of the test results suggests that weakening the "abutments" of the block as well as certain orientations of natural fractures exercise significant influence on cavability. These findings hold promise for immediate application to known situations in block-caving mines.

As man's need for minerals continues to grow and as the known mineral deposits become depleted, it may be expected that these increased demands will result in greater exploration for additional deposits and at continually increasing depths below the earth's surface. As labor and material costs continue to rise, the need for more economic material handling will be emphasized. The quest for heavier payloads, safely moved at faster speeds from deeper mines, will be vigorously pursued. Strenuous efforts are, therefore, being made in the wire rope industry to develop ropes with greater strength-to-weight ratios than presently available while maintaining the dependability and long life being received from the conventional rope manufactured today. For many years, high quality rope wire has been manufactured from rods of selected steel compositions. Carefully-controlled wire drawing combined with proper heat treatment has resulted in high quality wire and wire rope throughout this period. Refinements in the rod produced from specially-selected high carbon steels combined with the latest improvements in wire drawing and heat treatments have made it possible to manufacture higher strength rope wire of uniform composition and structure that is suitable for use in Special High Strength wire rope.

Materials produced in quarries have been used for different intentions such as concrete and cement raw material, asphalt and embankment aggregates, railway ballast. Especially in cement manufacturing, the chemical composition and the uniformity of the raw materials play a strategic role in the economy and quality of the cement process. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve uniformity and desired chemical composition and maintain these at all production stages according to the type of cement produced. To achieve this goal the production planning and pit design play an essential role. This paper briefly outlines the production optimization of cement raw materials in a quarry in Istanbul western part of Turkey. For the purpose it was used the 3D ore body modeling and the geostatistical techniques. The variation of chemical components (%CaO, %Al2O3, %Fe2O3 etc.) and quality control parametres (LSF, SR, AR and etc.) obtained from the quarry were determined. Then the values of unknown chemical components and quality control parameters in the ore body were estimated using Kriging which is one of the geostatistical interpolation methods. The open pit design was also created by specifying wall slopes and taking into consideration of the grade distributions of the benches. The most important revolution in the paper is investigating the effects of the block dimensions in block modelling which is important for reserve estimation. The other important point in the study is using the different range values in variogram analysis for determination optimal reserve estimation. n this study, the effects of two parametres on reserve and waste amount estimation were determined according to CaO% distribution. The study was pointed out that the changing of the two parameters are very important for the optimal mine planning and environmental considerations.

Reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In this process, quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?(OCH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of quartz does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in the ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the efficiency of iron ore flotation by the use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, Georgia Pacific (GP) clay binder. The GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It also helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating action on iron ions. The results from this study show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing iron recovery to 78.15%, while the concentrate grade remained stable at 67.08%. On September 10, 1991, Secretary of the Department of Interior Manuel Lujan deleted the Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area from the list of U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the U.S. Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found that it has indications of precious metals resources. The following is a summary of the results of that mineral investigation. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Silver Peak mining district, to the east, has a long mining history dating back to 1907 when precious-metals-bearing veins were discovered. The major producer in the Silver Peak district was Sunshine Mining Company's Sixteen-to-One silver mine. During the Bureau's study the Sixteen-to-One mine was operating; it has since been idled due to low silver prices. Precious metals-bearing veins were discovered in the Dyer district, to the west of the study area, in the 1860's. Mineral activity in Dyer district consisted mainly of prospecting. The Silver Peak study area itself has no mining history and contains only a few mining claims, but the Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz, calcite, and jasperoid with gold, silver, and base metals. At the surface these veins are poorly defined and poorly mineralized. The more than forty veins examined in the study area are as thick as 17 feet and as long as 1,000 feet. Samples from surface exposures of these veins contained as much as 0.02 ounce per ton gold, 2.1 ounces per ton silver, 1.0 percent copper, 2.6 percent lead, and 0.4 percent zinc. Analyses of the Bureau data disclosed no vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource. However, most do have indications of silver-and gold-bearing resources at depth. Subsurface exploration had to be done on the vein at the Sixteen-to-One mine to outline reserves (a vein averaging about 22 feet thick and containing 6-to 7-ounces per ton silver); the same is true of veins in the Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area.

A patent issued to J.N.J. Leeman (1957) described the change in performance that takes place when a cyclone is installed in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position. Although this patent was directed more toward improvements that could be realized in the heavy medium cleaning of coal, it contained specific references to reducing the quantity of fine solids that would report in the underflow, and an example for fine sand classification is also included. The three cyclone installations for which data is given in this paper demonstrate that horizontal mounting of large cyclones can improve classification efficiency, eliminate some operational difficulties, and reduce cyclone maintenance requirements in closed circuit grinding installations. Cyclone Experience at Serrana S.A. Each of four grinding circuits at the Serrana S.A. de Mineracao Apatite flotation plant in Brazil have a 2.7 X 4.6 meter (9 X 15 foot) rod mill and each originally operated in closed circuit with two vertically mounted Model D20B (500m nominal diameter) Krebs Cyclones. New feed size is 25mm. The Apatite is liberated at a relatively coarse 35 to 28 mesh grind, but the 500mm cyclones had to be fed at 66 pct. solids in order to obtain an overflow analyzing 12 pct. coarser than 42 mesh. Because dilution water in the cyclone feed had to be limited, classification was inefficient, and there were other significant circuit difficulties as summarized in a recent article by C. A. Busnardo (1984):

Rock bolts are components of tunnel support structures and their efficacy in reinforcement requires the appropriate estimation of the bolt pre-tension. However, cases of ineffective rock bolt application due to loosening are common which leads to the potential failure of the support structures, thus negatively affecting the tunnel stability. The effective employment of pre-tensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut pre-load. Henceforth, this paper presents a load indicator washer (LIW) capable of withstanding assigned static loading as well as provides an appropriate pre-tension. The different LIW breadths are numerically analysed in the finite element code (ABAQUS) to estimate deformation when a designated 60-kN pre-load is applied. The numerical simulation employs a bi-linear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nutLIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, a long-term relaxation effect on bolt pre-tension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW-predetermined deformation is the bolt pre-tension. It is drawn from the simulation results that the 1.5-, 2.0-, 3.0-, 3.5-, and 4.0-mm-thick LIWs are completely flattened when subjected to 28-, 42.5-, 65-, 76-, and 88-kN pre-load respectively.

The abstract discusses the use of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (D8) as an effective depressant in the flotation separation of stibnite and pyrite. The study investigates the mechanism behind D8's selective inhibition of pyrite, utilizing techniques like micro-flotation experiments, contact angle measurements, infrared spectroscopy, adsorption capacity analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The findings reveal that D8 physically adsorbs onto both pyrite and stibnite, but its adsorption capacity on pyrite is significantly higher. This adsorption enhances the hydrophilicity of the pyrite surface, hindering the adsorption of the collector and effectively depressing pyrite flotation, while having minimal impact on stibnite floatability.

Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.

This case study evaluates the long- term physical stability of various historical mining structures remediated by the Center for Mining Environmental Research and Studies (CIEMAN) in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca, Peru. The region has a long history of mining activity, with remnants dating back to pre-Inca times. CIEMAN has assumed responsibility for remediating 286 environmental liabilities in the area, including adits, shafts, pits, tailings, and waste rock dumps. The study analyzes the methods employed to stabilize these structures, including geotechnical engineering techniques and revegetation. Long-term monitoring results are presented, assessing the effectiveness of remediation measures and predicting the future stability of the structures. This study highlights the importance of responsible remediation of mining environmental liabilities to ensure the safety and sustainability of communities and ecosystems affected by historical mining.

A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore.
