Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. The European industrial minerals industry and its markets are largely self-sufficient. The companies who are members of the Industrial Minerals Association (IMA-Europe) number around 150 contributing 5 billion Euros to the EU?s GDP and range in size from global publicly quoted corporations to small family owned private companies. Their means and capability to implement sustainable development vary considerably. However the leading companies provide an excellent set of best practices, which IMA as a trade association with recognised core competencies in the field of sustainable development is ideally placed to promulgate throughout its membership. As an active participant in the EU Voluntary Scheme for SDI reporting IMA is not only working to increase the level of response to the SDI questionnaire but is also developing with its members a new sustainable development charter which its members will voluntarily adopt as a guiding principle for their implementation of sustainable development This work will be a consultative process involving all IMA?s section members as well as other trade associations, NGOs and MEPs. Public awareness of the benefits of minerals and their contribution to sustainable development has been raised by IMA?s awareness campaign now being followed by a more targeted programme aimed at MEPs. Further work in the future will consider product stewardship and life-cycle analysis. IMA is already positioning itself with the help of its members to assimilate the minerals industry of the accession territories in the sustainable development process.

The study of ultrasonic-wave propagation in substances has been remarkably advanced in recent years in most engineering and science fields. The main object in studying the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in solids, is to determine dynamic properties of these materials. The present paper, however, presents some other possible applications of ultrasonic-wave propagation in the study of rock mechanics as follows: Investigation of the mechanism of microseismic activites of geologic materials, (a) at initial or low stress level, (b) at final or fracture stress level, and (c) under fatigue loading condition. Also, correlations among stress level, density, and the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in rocks are discussed in this paper.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

Physical separation of bitumen from low-grade Utah tar sand deposits containing a relatively high viscosity bitumen phase (Sunnyside and Tar Sand Triangle deposits) has been accomplished by traditional size reduction and froth flotation techniques. At appropriate experimental conditions more than 90 percent of the bitumen can be recovered in a concentrate, containing more than 20 weight percent bitumen, which should be a suitable feed material for subsequent hot water or thermal processing. The efficiency of bitumen recovery depends on the extent of size reduction, promoter and dispersant addition. Rejection of greater than 60 percent of the sand at ambient temperature and ease of water removal from the concentrate make such a process strategy both energy and cost effective. The energy required to achieve effective separation by the ambient temperature process is significantly less than the energy required for the recently developed hot water process. The flotation behavior of the tar sand has been analysed with respect to flotation pH, contact angle measurements and the apparent iso- electric point of the bitumen. The best flotation response at pH 7.8 to 9.0 can be correlated with the maximum in contact angle developed between the air bubble and bitumen surface and with the apparent iso-electric point of the bitumen (-pH 8.0).

Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.

Every few years we are treated to a battle over trade policy when the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act comes up for consideration. In 1962 it is especially appropriate to consider the problem of mineral import -policy and the closely related problem of general import policy, for this year's struggle is different from those of the past in two ways. First, proposals have been made which are a substantial departure from past trade agreements legislation, and second, the formation and growth of the Europe Economic is Community may have an important bearing on the kind of legislation that is adopted. But this anticipates what is to come later. My task is to examine the problem of mineral import policy, although we shall find soon enough that general trade policy must be considered in order to get an indication of what is in store for minerals.

The ability to treat refractory gold concentrates that contain appreciable amounts of sulfur and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner is important to the gold mining industry. Processing alternatives include: autoclave oxidation, bacterial oxidation and roasting. Roasting may be the cheapest of all the alternatives if inexpensive methods can be found to contain the arsenic and sulfur. The research program, being reported here, has been evaluating the ability to use hydrated lime in the roaster to capture both the arsenic and the sulfur. Lime roasting is not a new idea, it was proposed for copper ores by Bartlett in the early 1970's (Bartlett and Haung 1973) and for cobaltite concentrates by Taylor in the early 1980's (Taylor et al., 1981). In addition, ores have been roasted that contained limestone and it was shown that partial capture of the sulfur was possible. Lime -sulfur containment has been proposed for the coal fired electricity industry, as well.

During the past five years, Rexnord has developed, tested and introduced the Nordberg Omnicone Crusher to the industry. When the Symons brothers invented the cone crusher over 60 years ago, they employed the principle wherein the length of the crushing stroke was related to the free fall of material by gravity. This permitted the material being crushed to fall vertically in the crushing chamber; and in effect, caused the particles to be crushed in a series of steps or stages as the particles got smaller due to the crushing action. This also helps to reduce the rate of wear of the liners since the sliding motion of the particles is minimized.

[Currently the cost of carrying out 'in situ' geotechnical investigation programmes or installing and operating monitoring systems at construction or mining sites is rising var." rapidly. This is primarily because of our ever increasing labour rates. As a result of this problem efforts are no,, being made develop techniques for the economical; collection of large quantities of geotechnical data relating, to such problems as done stability evaluation, the behaviour of underground openings, or 'in situ' testing procedures. The efforts to reduce the labour content. are particularly apparent in those procedures which have traditionally been manpower intensive e.g. 'in situ' permeability testing where an entire drilling crew and their associated eguipment have been on standby while testis has been carried out; or data collection in underground construction operations where much tine is typically wasted obtaining or maintaining access to instrument sites. In an attempt to illustrate one specialist consulting company's approach to the problem of reducing investigation costs, this rarer examines four recent developments in the field of geotechnical investigation and monitoring which have come about during the last two Years as a result of cur research and development programme. Although these techniques and devices have been developed for specific projects, they all have broad applications in the geotechnical field and they are indicative of the direction in which this company feels developments will take place.]

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. DEVELOPMENT The ramp access system lends itself well to conduct¬ing the several phases of development concurrently. The detection and quantification of invisible gold by microbeam techniques is discussed. Ion probe microanalysis is used to quantify the gold content of individual sulphide, sulpharsenide and oxide particles with a detection limit of 0.2 ppmw (g/t). The proton microprobe is used to determine the gold concentration of gangue minerals with a detection limit of 2 - 4 ppm. Using these techniques complete mineralogical balances for gold are obtained to assist in the process selection and optimization. A total of twenty gold and gold-bearing ores have been examined. Selected examples are presented.

This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

"Over the past decade, as conventional underground deposits have been depleted, mining operations have been forced to produce at greater depths and in more geologically and geometrically challenging conditions. As such, there has been a global increase in the application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) in tabular deposits utilizing open stope mining method with a delayed backfill placement. Despite the extensive use of CPB, many fundamental factors affecting the design of safe and economical fill structures are still not well understood. A critical issue in the design of backfilled stopes is the determination of stress states within the fill material itself as well as the surrounding rock mass. Analytical equations provide a means of quickly evaluating the effectiveness of a given design. However, in developing these equations large assumptions are implemented to simplify the design problem. It is important that one understands these simplifications as well as their effect on the overall design. This paper investigates common analytical equations utilized in the evaluation of single vertical backfilled stopes and their assumptions through comparisons to numerical modeling results. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND As the mining industry continues to produce at greater depths and in more geometrically and geologically complex conditions, cemented paste backfill (CPB) has gained traction as a means of providing localized ground support in modern stope-and-fill mining operations. The application of CPB in stope-and-fill mining as a ground support material has led to the reduction of mine waste costs, while increasing both mine production and stability. In an attempt to achieve total extraction of the mining reserve, stope-and-fill mining operations often employ a primary-secondary excavation-support sequence (see Figure 1). In this practice, primary stopes are initially excavated and then backfilled in a two-stage pour; plug and final pours. During the first stage (plug), a CPB material with increased cementitious content is placed at the bottom of the stope providing a strong base from which to build a backfill structure as well as protect mine works from material breakthrough. Following placement, the backfill plug is allowed to cure to a given strength as designated by the mine design. Upon achieving the required cure strength, a less cementitious CPB material is used to backfill the remaining stope area. This is referred to as the final pour stage. With all primary stopes excavated and supported using backfill, the extraction of the secondary stopes commences as primary stopes are utilized as artificial pillars. While the application of CPB in a primary-secondary extraction-support mining sequence allows for a substantial increase in reserve recovery, it is imperative the mining personnel and planning engineers have a clear understanding of the material’s behavior and stress interaction with the surrounding rock mass to ensure the most efficient, cost-effective, and safe extraction of underground deposits."

During recent years, there have been frequent investigations on the geochemistry of biotite. This work has emphasized, and no doubt was prompted by, factors related to mineral exploration, particularly for those deposits of the porphyry copper type. A large number of papers have been devoted to the obtainment of trace-element data from plutonic biotite. These data have been used to extract primary geochemical information pertaining to the parent magna and the hydro-thermal system which together give rise to porphyry copper deposits. In two early works, Putman and Burnham (1963) and Parry and Nackowski (1963) analyzed base metal contents of ferromagnesium minerals, primarily biotite, from various barrenfmineralized plutons of the Basin and Range Province. One similar conclusion from the two studies was that the Cu, Zn, and Pb contents of magmatic biotite served as indicators of ore development within the granitic rocks genetically related to ore. This theme was then pursued vigorously by a number of authors until the present time. Results, however, have been contradictory, as reviewed by Coope (1974). For example, studies by A1 Hashimi and Brownlow (1970), Lovering et a1 (1970), Putman (1972), and Graybeal (1973) continued to support positive primary relationships between the trace-metal content (usually copper) of biotite and associated sulfide mineralization. By studying biotite in close spatial association will sulfide occurrences, Putman (1972) and Graybeal (1973) developed models for base metal partitioning in magmatic systems based on their discovery of inversely distributed copper between silicate (biotite) and sulfide phases. Conversely, research by Bradshaw (1967) and Blaxland (1971) plus the recent findings of Parry and Jacobs (1975) and Kesler et a1 (1975) found little if any evidence to support a correlation of biotite base-metal or

There is little doubt that the stability of both highwalls and spoil piles is essential to efficient strip mining. Accurate determination of the appropriate geotechnical parameters will pay dividends during mining, but only if the mine operation closely follows the engineering plans which have incorporated These factors. Productivity is invariably higher in mines where failure of highwalls and spoil piles does not occur. This is the result of the reduced rehandle and better working conditions found in stable mines. Control of the waste piles and highwalls also leads to better coal recover since failures can result in the burial of uncovered coal, which is then lost to mining. Safety is an important consideration. The importance of providing a safe working place for employees and of protecting costly mining equipment is hard to overemphasize. For miners, working in areas where instability exists, the degree of hazard involved in their occupation is increased particularly where night operations are involved. It is true, too, that there have been many cases where loading equipment has been buried and severely damaged by failures.

"The solvent extraction of cerium(III) and samarium(III) from mixed solutions of all rare earth elements (REEs) except promethium using PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), an acidic extractant, was investigated. The effects of aqueous equilibrium pH, various acids (sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3 )), initial metal ion concentration and extractant concentration on the solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III) were systematically studied. From the experimental results, HNO3 and HCl were found to be the preferred aqueous media for the solvent extraction of both Sm(III) and Ce(III). The most promising experimental conditions of pH, PC88A concentration and metal ion concentration were identified for the extraction of Ce(III) and Sm(III). Separation results showed that H2 SO4 at pH 2 provided the best separation between Sm(III) and Ce(III). IntroductionIn recent years, demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has increased significantly because of their many commercial applications. REEs have especially important high-tech applications owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, and they are used in a wide range of areas such as catalysts, ceramics, magnets, lasers, glass, neutron absorption and alloys. As REEs have very similar physicochemical properties, their separation and purification from each other is challenging and gaining significant interest. Samarium (Sm) and cerium (Ce) are found in different REE minerals, including bastnäsite ((Ce,La,Nd(CO3)F), xenotime (YPO4) and monazite ((Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4) at major production sites in the United States and China, as listed in Table 1 (Bleiwas and Gambogi, 2013). The most common acidic organophosphorous extractants used for REEs extraction and separation are DEHPA (di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid), PC88A (2-ethyl hexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethyl hexyl ester), Cyanex 272 (bis-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid) (Sarangi, Reddy and Das, 1999; Surampally et al., 2012; Tian, Jia and Liao, 2013). Out of these extractants, PC88A is known for providing higher separation factors (Acharya, Mishra and Misra, 2015). El-Hefny et al. (2010) investigated the kinetics of the solvent extraction of Sm from chloride media using sodium salt of Cyanex 272 and reported the extracted species to be Sm(OH)A2•2HA. Lee et al. (2005) investigated the solvent extraction of Sm(III) with PC88A and saponified PC88A from chloride solutions and found the stoichiometry of the extraction reactions to be 1.5 with PC88A and 3 with saponified PC88A."
