Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

I welcome this opportunity to speak before the Coal Division of the AIME in such an attractive setting as the Pacific Northwest. With the development of the Centralia project, the Pacific Northwest will have its first major coal-fired thermal electric generating plant. This State has a long history of coal mining that diminished with the passage of coal-fired steamships and locomotives but is now reviving with the growth of electrical power demand. Because this 1,400 row plant is to be supplied with surface-mined coal, it is particularly appropriate that this area be the setting for a talk on factors influencing the growth of surface coal mining in the West. During the course of my talk, I will touch on a number of factors including electric power demand, coal resources, production trends, environmental considerations and trends in State and Federal activities that I feel will influence surface coal mining in the West. Total electric power consumption by the year 2000 is expected to reach 9.4 trillion kilowatt-hours. Predictions of total coal consumption for electric power generation by that year range from a low of 845 million tons to a high of 1,520 million tons, or 2.6 to 4.7 times the amount used for this purpose in 1970.

Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

Continuous airflow monitoring can improve the safety of the underground work force by ensuring the uninterrupted and controlled distribution of mine ventilation to all working areas. Air velocity measurements vary significantly and can change rapidly depending on the exact measurement location and, in particular, due to the presence of obstructions in the air stream. Air velocity must be measured at locations away from obstructions to avoid the vortices and eddies that can produce inaccurate readings. Further, an uninterrupted measurement path cannot always be guaranteed when using continuous airflow monitors due to the presence of nearby equipment, personnel, roof falls and rib rolls. Effective use of these devices requires selection of a minimum distance from an obstacle, such that an air velocity measurement can be made but not affected by the presence of that obstacle. This paper investigates the impacts of an obstruction on the behavior of downstream airflow using a numerical CFD model calibrated with experimental test results from underground testing. Factors including entry size, obstruction size and the inlet or incident velocity are examined for their effects on the distributions of airflow around an obstruction. A relationship is developed between the minimum measurement distance and the hydraulic diameters of the entry and the obstruction. A final analysis considers the impacts of continuous monitor location on the accuracy of velocity measurements and on the application of minimum measurement distance guidelines.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. Coal is the most abundant and most economical source of energy in the United States, however, combustion of coal results in release of pollutants to the environment. The release of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen during combustion of coal contributes to the deterioration of the environment. Energy independence in the United States must include the increased use of coal reserves. Increased reliance on coal for energy will dictate the necessity for making coal a cleaner fuel. New technologies employing a variety of techniques from harsh chemical treatment to mild physical separations to clean coal are rapidly becoming available. Success for any coal cleaning process is in economics which translate into efficient removal of sulfur with high recovery of combustibles as well as low capital and operating costs for the process. Conventional coal cleaning processes remove water soluble sulfates and a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash from coals. Removal of additional sulfur from coals requires more advanced coal cleaning techniques. Coal contains many organic sulfur forms which are the most difficult of the sulfur types to remove from coal. The heteroaromatic sulfur species, such as the comlex thiophenes, are the most commonly found organic sulfur forms. These sulfur forms are resistant to chemical attack and are considered to be refractory compounds. Atlantic Research Corporation has developed an "unique" microorganism, CB1 (Coal Bug 1), capable of oxidizing thiophenic sulfur in coal to form water soluble sulfates.

The Carache Canyon Prospect consists of a hypabyssal breccia pipe which intrudes a gently dipping sequence of Cretaceous Mancos Formation and Mesa Verde Group shales and sandstones. This sedimentary sequence is intruded by a number of Oligocene (34-30 Ma) calc- alkaline sills. The formation of the breccia pipe and its subsequent gold mineralization is related to the emplacement of an alkaline intrusive complex dated between 30-26 Ma. An exceptionally large block within the pipe provides compelling evidence that brecciated sills and sedimentary rocks form a relict stratigraphy that collapsed 400-800 ft (120-240 m) below their counterparts outside the pipe without substantial changes in stratigraphic position. Native gold and sulfide mineralization within and around the pipe occurs in fractures that are primarily controlled by competency differences between sills and sedimentary rocks and secondarily controlled by ductility contrasts between the relatively brittle Mancos Formation hornfels and the more ductile Menefee Group shales. The resulting pattern of gold mineralization is a series of stacked, tabular, mineralized sills and sandstone separated by barren shale in an annular region along the southwest margin of the pipe. A series of near-vertical, subparallel, sill and sandstone breccias separated by barren or weakly mineralized shale breccia occur within shallow levels of the pipe.

A mining company plans to extend its surface coal-mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accountings for the site shows an overall Neutralization Potential to Maximum Potential Acidity Ratio (NP:MPA) of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to be mined. If traditional dragline-mining methods are used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. To prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using truck-shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, amine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Therefore, mining this site should not result in the formation of AMD.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

"Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool that may be used to evaluate, design and improve the performance of mineral separation. The traditional LCA methodology provides a comparative evaluation of circuit designs purely from the unit interconnections. The quantitative approach uses the analytical circuit solution to evaluate the slope of the circuit’s partition curve at the midpoint. Since the partition slope is often associated with a separation’s general selectivity, this numeric value is used to compare and rank alternative configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. By itself, this value does not account for the relatively high unit dollar value of pure material or the gains and losses in mass yield associated with alternative circuit configurations. Realizing the value in the LCA methodology, but respecting the limitations of the partition slope valuation, the authors have derived two new performance indicators that quantitatively address pure particle misplacement (the Partition Moment of Inertia) and circuit mass yield (the Yield Score). Together, these parameters provide a better indication of separation economics in typical mineral and coal separation systems. Since the two parameters provide independent information on circuit selectivity and circuit yield, a Pareto efficiency, multi-objective function selection approach is proposed for preliminary circuit selection.IntroductionOver the past 30 years, numerous scientific and industrial studies have proposed various mineral processing circuit design methodologies that attempt to optimize the allocation of separation resources within the processing plant. Over this period, the methodologies have undergone various transitions, including the increased inclusion of process models and computationally intensive algorithms, as well as a general shift from a purely technical solution (Lauder and McKee, 1986) to partially economic solutions (Abu-Ali and Sabour, 2003; Cisternas et al., 2014). Today, circuit design is largely driven by flowsheet simulation; however, no consistent design methodology is used across the industry.One intriguing approach for circuit evaluation is linear circuit analysis (Meloy, 1983a). This method evaluates the separation potential of the circuit solely considering the unit configuration and stream interconnections. No preliminary data other than the basic circuit configuration is required to use the approach."

The purpose of this paper is to summarize some of the author's experiences in applying population balance models to a variety of industrial grinding circuits. Over 26 separate industrial circuits have been studied in detail during the last 10 years, each unique in its equipment type and layout as well as in the material (s) being ground. The success of the population balance approach during these studies was variable. Fourteen of the circuits were shown to be very amenable to such an approach while the remainder had conditions present that sufficiently violated the standard population balance assumptions so that the analysis was of less than optimal utility. Some discussion of the importance of standard population balance assumptions will be given. It is increasingly becoming this author's opinion that the use of population balance models has its greatest utility in defining logically and cheaply (in contrast to actual physical testing), the relative limits and comparisons of different proposed circuit configurations and changes in equipment types and/or operating conditions. As far as specific quantitative predictions and actual optimization of existing plant performance, the results of applying the population balance approach have been often disappointing and need to be coupled at the plant level with other engineering quantification techniques in order to achieve desired improvements.

5.1-PURPOSE, PROCEDURE, METHODS, MANAGEMENT Exploration can be technologically defined, with regard to the discovery of new mineral deposits, as all the activities and evaluations necessary before an intelligent decision can be made establishing size, initial flowsheet and annual output of new extractive operations. The purpose of mineral exploration is the discovery and acquisition of new mineral deposits amenable to economic extractive operations now or in the future. A prime objective of mineral exploration, however, is to find and acquire a maximum number of such mineral deposits at a minimum cost and within a minimum time. Immediately upon the heels of a successful ''exploration" discovery follow activities called, first, development, then operation. Under U.S. Internal Revenue Code regulations (Secs. 1.615.1 and 1.616.1) in effect at the time of this writing, which state that the "development stage" has been reached when "deposits of ore or other minerals are shown to exist in sufficient quantity and quality to reasonably justify commercial exploitation by the taxpayer," exploration in the technological sense may well continue after a mineral property has entered the "development stage" as defined for tax purposes. In many instances continued exploration, after reaching the tax defined "development stage," has disclosed additional reserves which justify a much larger, more efficient and more profitable operation than that which would constitute the minimum feasible. Even after a mine goes into production, continued ore search generally will increase the reserves, either justifying expansions in plant capacity or prolonging the life of the operation, but this work (actually "exploration") is normally considered, for bookkeeping and tax purposes, a part of mine development. Each exploration entity defines its own objectives in terms of acceptable mini- mum rate of return on investment for any deposit found and retained, and in terms of which commodities, and markets, are to be involved. For these reasons, exploration programs, and aims, will vary over a wide range, although all have the common objective of endeavouring to create new profit centers for the future. 5.1.2-EXPLORATION METHODS Exploration has evolved in the past several decades into a highly sophisticated and expensive endeavor in which large corporate entities, or subsidaries, normally are directed and staffed by highly trained exploration specialists. In some instances consultants, with expertise in a given field, are utilized to the benefit of such corporate groups. The "grasshopper" approach to exploration-searching only for outcropping minerals and/or investigating only mineral prospects offered by the discoverers of such outcrops has given us most of the past and present mines in the US., but this method is rapidly approaching the point of diminishing returns in areas that have been thoroughly prospected for currently marketable commodities. INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

The analysis of the results of metallurgical experiments is often complicated by experimental errors and uncertainty, the complexity of the system being studied, and the confusion of correlation with causation. Consequently, comparative statistics are used to determine if a difference exists between the outcomes of tests, an estimate of this difference, and the precision of the estimate. This paper reviews the use of significance tests and confidence intervals for the comparison of results from two tests, the use of reference distributions, and blocking and randomization techniques to reduce unavoidable sources of variability. These techniques are demonstrated using plant and laboratory data.

Separation of geochemical anomalies from the background using various methods for identifying areas of higher mineral potential is a critical first step in Greenfield and Brownfield programs. There are several methods for differentiating anomalous regions from the background. The U-spatial statistics is an effective technique that provides the opportunity of reaching this goal by considering the geochemical sample locations in the separation of geochemical anomalies. In this study, a developed form of the U-spatial statistics method is introduced, which not only considers the existence of anisotropic spatial variations in input data but also reduces the computational (CPU) time. While the previous method is based on the isotropic assumption in the study area and a set of search windows at different times, here, the geochemical anomaly is determined by pasting only one ellipsoid window, effectively combining the flexibility of the U-spatial statistics method with the advantages of geostatistical approaches. This paper compares various approaches (the previous and developed version of the U-spatial statistics method, concentrationarea (C–A) fractal model, and probability diagram modeling) for the separation of anomalous areas in the presence of heterogeneous spatial variations. This is done with an application to a Baghqloom porphyry copper deposit located in southeastern Iran. The high potential areas identified via different approaches show an anomalous region in central parts of the Baghqloom area, which partially coincides with an intense potassic alteration area. Compared to other methods, our algorithm separated the high potential areas at a greater spatial resolution.

18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

In 1997, 92.3% or 235.7 Mt (259.8 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River coalfield. The mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft). The thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb.). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coalbeds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 289 Mm3/a (10.2 billion cu ft/year). This production is occurring west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

I.- In order to keep pace feeding its fast growing population, Mexico with only about 20% of its surface suitable for intensive agriculture, will need the application of modern foodgrowing techniques. To assure greater crop yields it will be necessary to apply more fertilizers than used at present (yearly average of 29 Kgs/hectare)** For its fertilizers production Mexico still depends mostly on imports of phosphate concentrates from Florida, U.S.A., Morocco and Spain. To reduce or eliminate this dependence on foreign providers, the Consejo de Recursos Minerales -a Federal Government exploration Institute- started in 1974 an exhaustive exploration program for phosphate deposits more amenable to commercial exploitation than the phosphatic limestones contained within the La Caja Formation of Upper Jurassic, found along the Sierra Madre Oriental. After studying literature on the origin and deposition of marine phosphate and visits to deposits in Florida, U.S.A., the Baja California peninsula was selected as most favorable for starting this program because of its geologic and sedimentary history and also for its geographic location, where the cold California and warm Counterequatorial currents meet. Exploration activities executed by FORNOS, S. A. (1956) led to the disco very of low grade phosphate (3 to 5% P2O5) in the recent beach sands along the Bahia de Magdalena (Fig. # 1). In his doctoral thesis Bruno D'Anglejan Chatillon (1965) reports the presence of nodular phosphate on the continental shelf, between Isla Margarita and the Vizcaino peninsula. He estimated reserves of up to 1.5 million tons. A Mexican-American marine exploration company attempted in 1966 the evaluation of this deposit with negative results.

The current study investigates sericite clay as an alternative source of potash and alumina. The alumina and potash content in the sericite is approximately 35 and 10%, respectively, compared with 50–55% in bauxite ore. Muscovite and illite phases are stable, and direct leaching is found to be ineffective. Here, planetary ball milling was performed, which provided dissociation of stable phases to relatively reactive phases. The milling led to a five-fold increase in the surface area, resulting in enhanced leaching kinetics even at low acid concentration. The statistical design obtained optimal conditions of 8 h of milling followed by leaching in 1.73 M HCl at 75 °C, yielding 82% alumina extraction in precipitate with 85% purity in γ-alumina form and 63% potassium dissolution in sylvinite phase. The yield of the precipitate was ~65–68%, and the acid leach residue contained primarily silica.
